EDITORIAL We have reached the final stage of the extraordinary journey that has been the 2017 CIK-FIA European Championships. In Kristianstad, Sweden, the four major karting classes take to the track to compete in the decisive race. It has been just over three months since the first event in Sarno, three months in which karting has travelled to every latitude in Europe at full speed: from the Mediterranean climate in Sarno and Spain to the legendary circuit of Le Mans and up to the countries with great traditions in the north of our continent. The youngsters in the Academy class have already completed their final race in Alahärmä, so now it is the turn of the OK, OKJ, KZ and KZ2 classes to crown their champions. Afterwards, everyone will have a month in the summer to celebrate, of course, but also to prepare for the upcoming challenges at the World Championships. To reaffirm their superiority or to prepare an assault on those who, at Wackersdorf and at the PF International, will already be aiming to demonstrate that they can be the best.

OK ROUND 4 - ALAHĂ„RMĂ„

VICTORY & CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD FOR TAOUFIK

Taoufik (FA Kart / Vortex)

When they arrived in Finland, the lead of the championship was wide open with less the 10 points separating the first five in the title chase. However of those first five at the top of the table prior to the weekend, none of them had a great race in Finland leaving the door open for the other title contenders. In qualifying it was the local driver Paavo Tonteri (Tony Kart-Vortex) who took pole position. The Finnish driver also had a great run through the heats, however the Spainard Pedro Hiltbrand (Tony Kart-Vortex) who did even better to line up on pole position for the final. At the race start HIltbrand did lead

02

but not for very long as he was immediately attacked by Sami Taoufik (FA Kart-Vortex) who came from grid 7. Tonteri was looking as though he could take a home win, sitting in second place and then making a move for the lead. However the move did not come off, and taking full advantage was Bulantsev (Tony KartVortex) who moved into the lead. But the Moroccan responded immediately, retaking the lead and going on to win. Behind him was Bulantsev, Hiltbrand, ahead of Kruetten (FA Kart-Vortex) and Tonteri. A great drive from Theo Nouet (Energy Corse-Parilla), who picked up 10 positions to come home 8th from grid 18.

OKJ ROUND 4 - ALAHÄRMÄ

EDGAR WINS AND EXTENDS HIS CHAMPIONSHIP LEAD

Edgar (Exprit / TM Racing)

The penultimate round of the CIK-FIA European Championship for the OK Junior category was held in Finland the week prior to the championship final. Jack Doohan (FA Kart-Vortex) took pole position and continued this great form throughout the heats to line up on pole also for the final ahead of the two championship leaders; Jonny Edgar (Exprit-TM Racing) and Harry Thompson (FA Kart-Vortex). At the start of the final they got underway and kept their same grid order; Doohan, Thompson and Edgar followed by Jose Maria Navalon Boya (Kosmic-Parilla) and Ilya Morozov (Tony Kart-Vortex). These five maintained a handy lead over the next in

04

line, Hadrien David (Zanardi-Parilla). In the second half of the race, the situation became even more tense among the first five. Ilya Morozov was able to mount a challenge on the second last lap moving into second place with a pass on Jack Doohan, who would ultimately finish in fourth behind Harry Thompson, who was himself third. A great drive from O’niell Muth (Zanardi-Parilla), third in the championship coming into Finland, he made up 22 positions to finish 12th, right behind Francesco Pizzi (Luxor-LKE), who himself made up 10 places throughout the race.

KZ ROUND 3 - ALONSO

DE CONTO ALMOST CHAMPION WHIT AN HAT TRICK IN SPAIN

De Conto (CRG / TM Racing)

At the Fernando Alonso circuit, at La Morgal, near Oviedo, the KZ raced at the beginning of June the third round of CIK-FIA European Championship. De Conto (CRG-TM) arrived in Spain after had winning the first two round, but found a great opponent in the Dutch Marijn Kremers (BirelArt-TM), who grab the pole just ahead of the De Conto. The Italian driver, however, had his payback in the heats, where he won all the three races: the first ahead of the French Jeremy Iglesias (Formula K-TM), the second and the third

06

ahead of Kremers. In the final, Iglesias took the lead for few laps before De Conto – again! – passed him. Good performance also for the Dutch Bas Lammers (Sodi Kart-TM), who achieved a great recovery and managed to place second behind De Conto. Kremers was also very good and fought hard in the last laps to score a final third place. Thanks to the victory taken in Oviedo (Spain), De Conto and CRG are very close to win the 2017 KZ European Championship.

KZ2 ROUND 2 - LE MANS

IPPOLITO IS THE SURPRISING WINNER

Ippolito (Lenzokart / LKE)

For the KZ2 class, the race at Le Mans is the second round of the three that assign the European title. In the qualifying the first driver is the Italian Alessandro Pelizzari (CKR-TM), who stops the clock at 54”281, no less than 3”756 faster than the French Paul Fontaine (Sodi-TM), secondo. Both the drivers haven’t scored any points so far. Saturday all the KZ2 races are very hard-fought, and all the heats are won by different drivers with different brand of chassis: the Italian Francesco Celenta (PragaTM), Matteo Viganò (Tony Kart-Vortex), Paolo Ippolito (LenzoKart-LKE) and Alessandro Pelizzari, the Dutch Max Tubben (CRG-TM) and Martijn van Leeuwen (Energy-TM), the French Pierre Loubere (ZanardiParilla) and the Lithuanian Rokas Baciuska (Sodi-TM).

10 010

On Sunday there are other two heats, won by Pelizzari and Viganò, but the driver who gain the pole position of the Final is Ippolito, always in the first three places in all the heats he run. At the start of the Final, Pelizzari gains the leadership, but in the third lap Viganò passes him and go in the first position. During the firsts laps Ippolito manages to grab the second place after passing Baciuska, leaving Pelizzari in fourth position. The final stage of the race is thrilling: Viganò is forced to pull over for an engine failure with only one lap to go. So, victory goes to Ippolito, who achievs a welldeserved first position ahead of Baciuska and Pelizzari. Ippolito is now second in the championship standings, behind the leader: the German Leon Köhler (Tony KartVortex). Viganò is fourth behind Alex Irlando (Sodi-TM).

ACADEMY

ACADEMY CHAMPION He arrived from Belgium named Xavier Handsaeme, he is the new Champion of the CIK FIA Academy Trophy. The 2017 season started for the young Belgian with a third placed podium in the first round held in Belgium. He went even better at Le Mans where he took a fantastic victory with a 6 second advantage over second place. Xavier, therefore arrived in Finland with the series lead. The Belgian did not disappoint and was able to avoid the damage to finish in 2nd place in the race and therefore claim the title.

XAVIER HANDSAEME NOW & NEXT

CIRCUITS The Swedish Asum Ring circuit has been one of the major venues of CIK-FIA races in recent years. Last year it hosted the KZ World Championship and the KZ2 International Super Cup. In the previous two years, it played host to the last round of the non-shifter and shifter European Championship classes. In 2017, Kristianstad welcomes drivers from all classes for the last round of the European Championships. The track was expanded and completely renovated in 2011 to observe the parameters for “A” grade circuits required by the CIK. 1,234 metres in length and featuring a 170 m. main straight, it has a total of 16 bends, including two chicanes. The height varies by 6 metres at different points on the circuit.

The first of the two 2017 World Championship events will take place in Germany; the KZ Championship title and the KZ2 International Super Cup are up for grabs. Paolo de Conto is the reigning KZ champion and will turn up at Wackersdorf as the man to beat. Pedro Hiltbrand crowned an outstanding 2016 in the KZ2 class by capturing CRG’s umpteenth title of the season before moving to Tony Kart, the team he now represents.

PF INTERNATIONAL / BRANDON / SEPTEMBER 24 CIK-FIA World Champs & CIK-FIA World Junior Champs

After a year away, CIK-FIA races return to England for the CIK-FIA World Championship and the CIK-FIA World Junior Championship. As was the case at Wackersdorf, at PF International Hiltbrand will be called upon to defend OK title won last year in Bahrain. However, the reigning KF2 champion, Victor Martins, will not participate, since he has already graduated from karts to single-seaters. Who will take his mantle?

STATISTICS THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP... IN NUMBERS A total of 671 drivers took part in the first 4 weekends of the CIK FIA season, an average of 167.75 per weekend. A remarkable figure, especially in light of the fact that only one of the 4 appointments had 4 classes together (3 in all the others). The class with the most drivers was the OK, totalling 197
