KF - ROUND 1
The European Championship for non-shifter categories opened on the 1531 meter circuit of the Kartódromo de Algarve, for the first time host to a CIK-FIA competition. With a broad field of 47 drivers, the KF category produced strong battles across the board. A well-balanced qualifying phase, divided in three sessions, saw Alexander Vartanyan (Tony Kart/Vortex) claim the overall pole position, followed by Tom Joyner (Zanardi/TM Racing), Felice Tiene (CRG/Parilla), Ben Hanley (Croc Promotions/TM Racing), Andreas Jochimsen (Kosmic/Vortex), and Dionisios Marcu (Tony Kart/Vortex). Intense the whole way through, the heats featured some thrilling recoveries, beginning from the first 3 races on schedule. In the A-B race, Karol Basz (Kosmic/Vortex) came up 3 to close 3rd behind the top duo of Vartanyan (also author of the best lap) and Joyner, while Matteo Viganò (Top Kart/Parilla) did a breathtaking rise from 17th to 8th. In heat C-D, while Ben Hanley did a great job of snatching the lead from Felice Tiene right off grid and taking the win, Benjamin Barnicoat (Birel ART/Parilla) climbed from 11th to 4th, closing behind a steady Leonardo Lorandi (Tony Kart/

Vortex), 3rd from start to finish. The intense action continued in heat A-C: while up front Tiene took over from Vartanyan and Lorandi reconfirmed his 3rd place standing, the great rebounds were signed by Jordon Lennox-Lamb (Birel ART/Parilla) and again Viganò, both up 9 spots to close respectively 6th and 8th. Other remarkable shuffling came in the fifth race of the day, heat A-D: while Ben Hanley took another clear win, consigning Vartanyan to 2nd and scoring the best lap, Casper Roes Andersen (FA Kart/Vortex) worked his way up to 3rd and Lennox-Lamb managed another impressive climb to take his second 6th place finish in a row. When all was said and done, at the end of the six heats, Hanley was leading the way with three straight wins, followed by Tiene and Friday’s top 2 qualifiers, Vartanyan and Joyner. Marcu and Lorandi completed row 3 for the prefinal, followed by Basz and a fast-paced Nicklas Nielsen (Tony Kart/Vortex), able to rise from 15th on Friday to 8th going into Sunday. The drivers who managed the greatest improvement from the qualifyings were Lennox-Lamb - from 29th to 12th, Viganò - from 33rd to 13th, and Thibaut Haublin (Kosmic/Parilla) - from a distant 40th to a hopeful 20th.

In the Prefinal, Ben Hanley continued to prove he was the man to beat, giving another dominant run and winning with a margin of 1.318 over the runnerup. Behind him, Hannes Janker (CRG/Parilla) and Martijn Van Leeuwen (CRG/TM Racing) gave true star performances, each moving up 8 positions to close 2nd and 3rd respectively, with Van Leeuwen also scoring the best lap of the race. Lorandi also consolidated his victory hopes, taking over 4th place and relegating Joyner to 5th. Behind the front-runners, other than a steady Nielsen, 8th from start to finish, the field saw significant shuffling of positions. Roes Andersen moved up 3 to close 6th, followed by a struggling Tiene, 7th after losing 5 positions. Friday’s poleman Alexander Vartanyan and his teammate Marcu also dropped several positions each, closing 9th and 10th respectively, while Juri Vips (FA Kart/ Vortex) came through 11th on a massive rebound from 24th on grid, securing his chances for a good final. Finally, the prefinal brought bad luck also on Saturday’s hard-charger Matteo Viganò: unable to end the race, the Italian saw his efforts to catch up to the front-men suddenly compromised. With such a dynamic scenario, the Final was bound to offer another thrill-packed show. Up front, Ben Hanley did it again - first from start to finish - completing his near-perfect Portuguese weekend with another great

victory. Instead, the battle for the runner-up spots was a whole other story, sweeping away all predictions. At the end of the day, the podium waved the British flag twice as Tom Joyner managed to secure 2nd place, on a strong rise from fourth on grid, followed by an excellent Felice Tiene, 3rd after a determined four-position climb. Instead, Janker and Van Leeuwen, 2nd and 3rd on grid, dropped down to 4th and 5th, followed by fast-paced Marcu, up four positions. As we head into Round 2, Hanley stands as the absolute leader thanks to his full score in Portimao (35 points), followed at a distance by Joyner (27) and Tiene (25). Despite his tough weekend, Vartanyan is also fully in the title contention, 5th behind his teammate Marcu, but on a point-par (16). Janker stands 6th with 14 points, a fantastic result, considering he started the championship from 18th position, while Van Leeuwen follows in 7th, thanks to the 11 points conquered in the Portuguese Final (his initial standing after qualifyings was 11th). With such a contested field, the battle for the 2015 KF title is wide open. The one sure thing is that Ben Hanley and Mad-Croc Karting have found the perfect balance with the support of TM engines. Should they manage to reconfirm their superiority, it will be hard for competitors to contrast them.

KFJ - ROUND 1
The KF-Junior started its 2015 European Championship with a crowded field of 63 participants. The one to lead the way after 3 qualifying sessions was Sami Worship (FA Kart/Vortex). Yet, his command was all but secure, with Kenny Roosens (Kosmic/ Parilla) second fastest by a mere 0.070 seconds, followed at an even smaller gap (0.005) by Ulysse De Pauw (Birel ART/Parilla). Behind the tightly-packed top 3, the next fastest of all were Sebastian Personn (Tony Kart/Vortex), Caio Collet (Kosmic/Vortex), and Teddy Wilson (Tony Kart/Vortex). In the Heats, Roosens managed to take control of the field, winning all four of his races and securing the pole position for the prefinal, while Worship dropped from 1st to 4th, constant in each heat, but never able to win. At the end of the day, the surprise came with the names securing the other top spots. Christian Lundgaard (Tony kart/Vortex) secured 2nd place, moving up the standings by 16 positions, thanks to phenomenal performances (victory, third, and twice fourth). Teddy Wilson claimed 3rd place, gaining “just” 3 positions, but making it feel like a lot more, considering how his heats went: winner of
10
his first race, a risky drop to 8th in the second, and again winner in his last stint. The names completing the Prefinal’s Top 10 offered more proof the highlycompetitive situation in this year’s KFJ: Antonio Serravalle (Tony kart/Vortex) placed 4th, improving his standing by 3 positions; Clèment Novalak (Tony Kart/Vortex) started the day 10th and ended 5th; Kush Maini (Tony Kart/Vortex) rose from 13th to 7th with great racing (winner of his first heat, then ninth, second, and fifth); Presley Martono (Tony Kart/Vortex) went from 14th to 8th; Bent Viscaal (Tony Kart/Parilla) from 21st to 9th with a heat victory; and Perdana Putra Minang (Tony Kart/Vortex) placed 10th, recovering 15 positions. For all those who went up, one went down: Caio Collet slipped from 5th to 16th in the standings. In the first two heats the Brazilian seemed lost (18th and 17th), then he bounced back with an impressive victory and a 2nd place finish, but his hopes for victory seemed compromised. Just like in KF, with the KFJ qualifying phase offering such an unpredictable scenario, Sunday action had fans glued to their seats. In the Prefinal, the only safe bet proved to be the one on Roosens’ leadership.

After being so incredibly effective in the heats, the Belgian fully met expectations by scoring another great win, consolidating his claim on the final win. The battle for 2nd place, instead, was suspense-packed and produced a surprise. At the end of another impressive 8-position charge, it was Minang who crossed the finish-line behind the winner, getting ahead of Christian Lundgaard and Teddy Wilson and securing a front row start for the Final. Kush Maini also continued his rise, gaining two more positions to round off the top 5, followed by an absolutely remarkable Sebastian Fernandez Wahbeh (Exprit/Vortex), who plowed his way from 20th to 6th. The other fierce climbers of the Prefinal were David Vidales (Energy Corse/TM Racing), from 26th to 12th; Rasmus Lindh (Ricciardo Kart/ Parilla), from 25th to 15th; Ivan Shvetsov (Tony Kart/ Vortex) from 29th to 17th; Sebastian Persson (Tony Kart/Vortex), from 28th to 18th; and Alex Quinn (CRG/ Parilla), from way down in 32nd to 19th. When the Final started, the heat was on, as they say. While up front Roosens crowned a perfect weekend with the ultimate victory, the battle for the place of honor again produced an exciting change of scenario, with Collet able to make up for his bad luck in the heats by plowing his way up 8 positions and ending the weekend 2nd in the title hunt. Christian Lundgaard, again “relegated” to 3rd place, had the pleasure of

completing the Round 1 podium. The first name right below the ceremony stage, on Sunday night, was another huge surprise: Ivan Shvetsov. In Portimao, the Ward Racing driver gave a clear example of what it means to be determined: 33rd after qualifyings, he achieved a phenomenal recovery of 29 positions, of which 25 gained just between Prefinal and Final. Behind him, Minang had to make do with rounding off the Top 5, after slipping down 3 positions, while Felipe Drugovich (Kosmic/Vortex) and Sun Yueyang (FA Kart/ Vortex) secured 6th and 7th place, after impressive climbs (up 14 and 15 positions respectively). Along with Alex Quinn, who achieved another great move up from 19th to 9th, the other speed-runners of the Final were Charles Milesi (Tony Kart/Vortex), from 23rd to 10th, and Oscar Piastri (Kosmic Kart/Parilla), up 21 spots in the general standings, almost a record. Coming into Round 2, Kenny Roosens leads with a perfect score (35) and clear superiority: all he missed in Portugal was pole position and just by a few hundredths. Like Ben Hanley and Mad-Croc in the KF, the Belgian and VDK Racing seem to have found the perfect mix. Yet, considering that the PFI offers a very different playing field, it is too early to say. Lundgaard is a “far” 2nd (25 points), followed in tow by Collet (20 points, all from the Portimao Final), and farther off Shvetsov and Novalak (even at 13) and Minang (12).
