EDITORIAL Like every year, following a kind of unwritten script of a Hollywood movie, the karting season is continuing to grow and, now its finishing, it puts its most prestigious goals on the plate. This year, in particular, we have to wait until late November; further increasing the adrenaline for a world title with a special flavour, ennobled by an extraordinary journey that has brought us to the wonderful Bahrain International Kart Circuit. All the best drivers in the non-shifter classes are here at this event, for the “grand finale” of an intense and exciting season which confirmed the winning professionalism of many “veteran” karting drivers, and allowed just as many new drivers to blossom into the international limelight, talent to keep an eye on for years to come! A great “world championship” to you all!

WELCOME TO BAHRAIN The 2016 edition of CIK-FIA World Championship and the CIK-FIA World Junior Championship will take place in a privileged location: the Bahrain International Kart Circuit, placed in the context of the complex that also hosts the Formula 1 GP. The Bahrain International Kart Circuit opened its doors in March 2011 and it immediately became a reference point for karting not only in the “Middle East” but also internationally. In fact, in 2012, the first championship ever held in the Middle East Karting world took place here, as well as the first CIK-FIA race held at night. On this occasion, it was the CIK-FIA U18 World Championship and Academy Trophy that got on track, while the following year the circuit was the scene of the second and decisive round of the KF and KFJ World Championship.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN OK - OKJ The OK and OK-Junior are the two reference classes of non-shifter karting. Both made their debut in 2016, taking the place of the “old” KF and KFJ classes, and bringing the new engines wanted by CIK-FIA onto international tracks. The basic technical characteristics of the engines are identical for both the OK and the OKJ (125 cc displacement; no electric starter, battery and wiring; no clutch, a decompression valve; a water pump which can be either internal or external, and no longer only internal like in the KF...). Between the two classes, however, there are of course also differences, making the OK-Junior class open to younger drivers, while the OK is the arrival point of the non-shifter international karting “chain”. Let’s see the main differences between the OK and OKJ.
• Specific monotype power-valve. • Combustion chamber minimum volume of 9 cc. • Exhaust angle limited to 194° maximum on the exhaust ports. • Engine speed limit set at maximum 16,000 rpm. • Specific monotype exhaust (different form OKJ). • Homologated butterfly carburettor with a maximum diameter of 24 mm.
• Power-valve not permitted. • Combustion chamber minimum volume of 12 cc. • Exhaust angle limited to 170° maximum on the exhaust ports. • Engine speed limited to maximum 14,000 rpm. • Specific monotype exhaust (different form OK). • Homologated butterfly carburettor with a maximum diameter of 20 mm.

After dates and circuits, let’s also see who will be the “champions to beat” in 2017. In other words, all those who won a CIK-FIA title this season. Obviously, we still don’t have the names of the world and world junior champions: who will be able, on the track in Bahrain, to earn a place in this prestigious list?

CHAMPIONS
HILTBRAND ON THE TOP The Spanish CRG driver’s journey began in the first European Championship dedicated to the OK class with a failure, in Spain of all places. From that point on, however, Hiltbrand was always on the podium, winning the championship in the last race.
OK
PEDRO HILTBRAND
2016 European Champion Let’s rewind the season’s tape and go back, for a moment, to mid-May, when the first round of the European OK Championship had just finished on the Zuera track in Spain. One of the most disappointed was Pedro Hiltbrand, the Spanish CRG driver, born in 1996, who hoped that on “home ground” he would take the first important step for the runup to a dream called the “European title”. Instead, after the excellent qualifications in which he finished in fourth place, the pre-final and the final reserved a double “0 points” for him which was difficult to take in. How far away that scene now looks, seen after two and half months and at a distance of 1,500 km, while, in Genk, the driver raised his arms into the air to celebrate winning the European title. These two scenes encapsulate Hiltbrand’s incredible rise, showing all the maturity of his 20 years, winning a European championship with talent and willpower. That strength which, after the unfortunate start in Spain, saw Hiltbrand outperform the competition in the next round in Adria, and then confirm his success on the podium in both Portimao and Genk, where the last of the worthiest opponents (Tom Joyner) was forced to surrender to the form of the first European champion in history in the OK class.
10
KENNEALLY... SPRINTING The European Championship in the OKJ class was hard fought. The final ranking was literally turned upside down in the last round in Genk. The Englishman Kenneally won, who did well to remain behind the front runners for the first three racing weekends, and then delivered the decisive blow at the right time.
FINLAY KENNEALLY
2016 European Junior Champion
OKJ
Big competition, as is known, is one of the hallmarks of the junior karting classes. In the OKJ class, in particular, there have always been many drivers capable of winning races, and the races are often won on the wire. This, on the one hand, makes it even more difficult to stand out, given the large number of opponents to beat. On the other hand, however, it also means that many drivers are ready to share the spoils of the points, “stealing them” from each other. Watt led the 2016 OKJ European Championship for the first three rounds, while behind him were Collett and Blomqvist who exchanged positions. Constantly in fourth place was the Englishman Kenneally, always among the leaders and almost slyly lurking like a hawk, ready to take advantage of the first opportunity. The gap was always small and the balance we talked about remained to the last. In Genk, the “settling of the scores” went Kenneally’s way. He did well to race prudently in the pre-final, and hit hard in the final, where his second place allowed him to take a decisive leap in the standings, also helped by several other drivers who “stole” precious points from those who had been in the lead until that point.
11
CHAMPIONS
FINALLY DE CONTO At 24 years of age, Paolo de Conto, already a star with a great career in karting, won the world title in the KZ class. Thanks to a race dominated from pole position, but with the thrill of a decisive comeback during the final.
KZ
PAOLO DE CONTO
2016 WORLD KZ CHAMPION The Italian CRG driver has long been one of the top men in international karting. Initially with Birel, then Energy, Birel again, and now CRG, he collected victories worthy of the best in this sport. However, what was missing was a victory which in itself is worth a career and getting his name in the most prestigious roll of honour. To exacerbate the missing title moreover, is the memory of a 2015 World Championship lost only in the last lap after a very heated duel with Jorrit Pex. This is why, in Kristianstad, De Conto was one of the most anticipated drivers, and also one of those feeling the most pressure. However, the Italian driver’s response was that of a true champion: unstoppable on the track while keeping a cool head. In a word: unbeatable. It was him in pole position, winning in the two heats and the pre-final. So was it all easy, then? Not really, because in the final De Conto slipped to fourth position, where he could have surrendered to the “ghosts” of the past. Instead he responded like a champion, he recovered, and won the title that made him World Champion and gave CRG its third world title in four years.
ACADEMY TROPHY A trophy dedicated to the youngest drivers, at their first experience in the international arena, was won by the Englishman Callum Bradshaw, who in Kristianstad could afford to “control” the advantage he had gained thanks to the good work done in the first two rounds in Essay and Portimao. 12
WHAT A SEASON, PEDRO! Hiltbrand finished an extraordinary season in the International Super Cup in Kristianstad, which saw him win the European title in the OK class. The last driver to be successful in both the single-speed and gear karts was Max Verstappen.
PEDRO HILTBRAND
KZ2
2016 INT’L KZ2 SUPER CUP CHAMP. Before 2016, Pedro Hiltbrand had only won important titles in Spain in the Cadet and KF3 classes. Since 2010 his record has shown many good placings, a constant growth, but few decisive first places. Then, this season, he won the European title in the OK class, the Spanish championship in the KZ2 class, and in Kristianstad, the most classic “cherry” on top of the cake of a perfect season: winning the International KZ2 class Super Cup. A truly amazing year, which saw the Spaniard becoming a contender and then victorious in the most important karting races, and in the heats, as only Max Verstappen had managed in recent times. He won in Kristianstad racing as the favourite, because of his previous wins, and his dominance in the trials, heats and the pre-final. In the Final, things were more complicated, with the Spaniard involved in a great initial duel with Felice Tiene and Tommaso Mosca before flying away to victory. Behind him, there was a great comeback by Federer and the excellent third place achieved by Tornqvist, thereby completing a CRG only podium.
BRADSHOW
2016 KARTING ACADEMY TROPHY The CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy is the event strongly supported by the Federation to give younger drivers a prestigious showcase, making them breathe the air of the great events of international karting. An event that was a great success, and also in Kristianstad, for the third and decisive round of the season, there were drivers from 39 countries all over the World on the track.
Among them, finishing first, was the Englishman Callum Bradshaw, who also confirmed, in Genk, the talent he displayed in the first race in Essay. A talent that impressed the experts, all the more so considering that Bradshaw started his career racing in the Academy Trophy with just two full seasons of karting behind him. Now he has achieved the success that promises a future karting star. 13
