EDITORIAL Euro Championships of shifter category are today more than ever under the attention of public and media, due to and thanks to very young and talented drivers winners of such Championships in the last years and quickly escalated to the dream of any motorsports competitor, F1. Max Verstappen between 2013 and 2015 has moved from winning the Euro KZ Championship, in addition to the World KZ and Euro KF Championships, to racing in F1. It is a pleasure and an honour to start the 2015 Season knowing, already, that this year’s champions will be potential and likely drivers of tomorrow’s F1! Luca De Donno WSK Promotion President

CALENDAR

CIRCUITS Two circuits out of three change in the 2015 calendar of the KZ and KZ2 classes, compared to last year. Genk, in Belgium, stays, but is now the third and last appointment of the Championship, instead of the opening round, while the German and Swedish races will be substituted with the warmer Italian (Sarno) and Spanish (Zuera) appointments.

DETAILS

TECH FOCUS In the shifter kart class, KZ is the queen category, while KZ2 is the initial category to approach karting with gears. Drivers often move from a very tutorial KF class to a more complete KZ class, which adds performance and the use of gears, preparing to the next step into Formula racing.

1

INLET SYSTEM

5

For both categories, the technical regulation sets maximum displacement to 125 cc, with bore around 54 mm, and requests reed valve inlet system with 30 mm maximum diameter carburettor.

2

3

MATERIALS Composite materials (such as Carbon, Kevlar or Glass fibers), suspension systems and differential systems cannot be used, neither in KZ nor in KZ2.

7

WEIGHT The minimum weight limit is for both categories equal to 175 kilograms (kart plus driver).

NUMBERS In both KZ and KZ2 each driver will be entitled to submit to scrutineering the following equipment: two chassis of the same make, two engines of the same make.

04

6

TIRES On the performance side, a difference is given by tire make, which is Bridgestone (Medium/Prime) in KZ, and LeCont (Medium/Prime) in KZ2.

4

Braking system must be hydraulic and is free in KZ, as long as it complies with specific technical prescriptions, while in KZ2 the system must be homologated. The system has to act on all four wheels with a single control given by the braking pedal. Drivers have the possibility to regulate the balancing of the braking between front and rear tires by acting on a control on the brake pump.

SHIFTER SYSTEM Shifter system and gearbox must be CIK-FIA homologated and can have from three to six gears but is actually six gears on all engines. In KZ2 the gearbox control is mechanical, while in KZ it can be also electromechanical.

BRAKING SYSTEM

8

FUEL The FIA World Motor Sport Council has decided to designate, for KZ and KZ2 categories, PANTA as the exclusive supplier of fuel (KART RON 102 type) to be used by each Driver.

KZ and KZ2 categories use identical engines with powers indicatively equal 40 HP. Engine is water cooled with internal water pump. Differences are in the kind of shifter system, in the tire make, and in the obligation of having homologated or not breaking systems. To race in KZ a driver needs to achieve racing merits (titles).

CHAMPIONS

WHO WILL TAKE THE INHERITA The 2014 Intercontinental king and European KZ Champion with Zanardi Strakka Racing is the Belgian Rick Dreezen. Who will take his inheritance in 2015, after Rick has taken it from no less than Max Verstappen?

DREEZEN

Rick Dreezen, 2014 CIK-FIA European KZ Champion. The Belgian last year topped the final championship standings and won the title, without ever rising to the first step of the podium in any of the three rounds, proving that continuity of performance pays off. This year he will still be the driver to beat in the European KZ Championship. Born in Genk on 1st August 1990, Dreezen drives for the Zanardi Strakka Racing Team. He joined the team at the beginning of the season and the fact that he secured a title victory the first chance he got is a major achievement. His championship results include two 2nd place finishes - one on his “home turf” in Genk and the other in Wackersdorf, Germany - and 3rd place in the decisive final round in Sweden. His comment before the closing round was: “for me it is already a success to be mathematically in the top 3 of the KZ European Championship. If at the start of the season they had told me ‘sign here to get in the top 3’, I would’ve signed immediately. Now I even have the opportunity to aim for the title and I am not going to let it go”. Prophetic words, in hindsight, from a “normal” and humble kid who loves tennis, video-games and today is the European Champion in the top class of international karting. In 2008 he closed the KZ Championship in 2nd place... he’s come a long way!

ANCE THIS YEAR? This page is dedicated to the other title winner of 2014, Andrea Dalè. The Italian is a “private” driver and runs with CRG equipment. He has been in the international scene for a while, but nobody expected him to claim the European crown. Today, and until the end of the 2015, he is the new European KZ2 Champion.

Andrea Dalè’s KZ2 title victory was a hard-earned climb to the top. If it hadn’t been for the mishaps that compromised his direct rivals’ chances, his performance in Kristianstad might not have been enough to reach the summit. The Italian ruled the first round in Belgium, winner of all the heats, triumphant in the prefinal, and first at the finish-line of the final with a respectable gap. This is how he had commented his achievement: “A perfect weekend, I hope to keep it up. Being up there as a private driver ahead of factory officials is double the satisfaction. Let’s see what happens now.” What happened after this was a not so thrilling performance in Wackersdorf: the fact that it was raining didn’t help and Dalè left the German track without any points. The championship outcome was wide open and it all came down to the Swedish weekend. Here time and luck turned in Dalè’s favor: here rivals trip and fall and closing fifth is enough for him to become European KZ2 Champion, the best result of his career so far. Andrea Dalè was born in 1987, on July 11th, and besides being a talented kart driver, also has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Università degli Studi di Brescia (2011). Smart, determined, talented... he is bound to go far in life.

FROM KZ TO F1

MAX VERSTAPPEN He is the real talent coming from karting, the ambassador of our sports, and the living proof that a strong kart champion has talent also to be a strong Formula and F1 driver! He is the real talent coming from karting, the ambassador of our sports, and the living proof that a strong kart champion has talent also to be a strong Formula and F1 driver! In three years Max Verstappen has stepped from karting to F1, the first and last driver that will be in F1 before the age of eighteen, as FIA has changed rules, defining minimum age at eighteen. Max is actually unique in his talent, already evident in 2013, when he won the KZ World and European Championship titles and the KF European Championship title. After having won almost everything there was to win in karting in one single year, Max has moved to FIA F3 Championship, where he has won more races than any other driver in that same year, ten, but was finally “only third in the Championship. So many wins have taken him, at the age of seventeen, to F1, and he has become the younger driver ever to race in F1. After two races in 2015, balance is he has retired in the opening race of Australia, but has reached the 7th position in Malesia, obtaining, with his Scuderia Toro Rosso, championship points, and setting once more an age record, becoming the youngest driver to achieve points in the F1 Championship.

STATISTICS

FIGURE IT OUT Ten different nationalities in the KZ 2015 Championship, nine of which, totalling 26 drivers, are European, and one driver from the USA, for a taste of competition in the old Continent. Tm is well ahead as for the number of drivers both in KZ and KZ2, while 15 are the different chassis brands in KZ. A huge presence of Italians with 27 drivers, out of total 65, ready to start the KZ2 Championship this year. European, but also drivers from the USA, Japan, Russia and the Emirates. On the chassis side, CRGs seem to be greatly requested, could it be because private driver Andrea Dalè won last year’s Championship?

REGULATIONS CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM In both categories, the Championship runs over THREE (3) rounds. Each round comprises Free Practice, Official Qualifying Practice, Qualification Heats with the possibility of a Second Chance Heat*, and a final phase, including the Prefinal (one or two)* plus the Final. In each round, points are assigned to the Top 10 of the Intermediate Classification and the Top 15 of the Final race. For each category, the title of CIK-FIA European Champion will be awarded to the Driver with the most points at the end, after the worst Intermediate and Final results have been discarded. (*Depending on the number of participants).

ELIGIBLE KARTS & EQUIPMENT The Championship is reserved respectively for KZ1 and KZ2 karts, as defined in the Technical Regulations. At Scrutineering, each Driver is entitled to submit: 2 chassis of the same make, 2 engines of the same make, plus 3 sets of Bridgestone “slicks” (Bridgestone is the official provider for both categories, tires will be allocated by random draw). Karts must be presented in full double configuration (“dry” and “wet”) and ready for use, complete with engines. for both categories, from Qualifying Practice on, each Driver is allowed to use a maximum of: 2 chassis and 2 engines (those marked at Scrutineering) and 2 sets of both slicks and wet tires (a total of 4 front/4 rear tires of both types).

STARTING PROCEDURE At the end of the Formation Lap, Drivers will proceed at a reduced and constant speed towards the Start Line, creating two lines of karts. Partial crossing of the lanes is liable to a 3 second penalty, while leaving the corridor and/or overtaking will be sanctioned with a 10 second penalty. If a Driver stops during the Formation Lap, he may try to start again from the back of the formation. If he tries to re-start ahead of the field, he will be excluded from the event. Karts must maintain their position until the Start signal is given. If the Track Clerk/Race Director is not satisfied, he will require another Formation Lap.

NEW POINT SYSTEM

The “hot” phases worth points towards the Championship title are the HEATS and the FINAL. Points will be assigned to the TOP 10 of the combined Intermediate Standings (established after the Heats) and the TOP 15 of the Final.

TIRES FOCUS SUSPENDING & RESUMING A RACE In case of any dangerous conditions, such as an accident blocking the way, the Track Clerk/Race Director may decide to stop the race, by showing the red flag on the Finish Line and at Marshals’ posts. If the race is a Practice: all karts must reduce speed and return to the Service Park. If the race is a Heat, a Prefinal, or a Final: all karts must slow down and will be directed either to the Service Park entrance, or asked to stop on track. If the race is suspended definitely, results will correspond to the track order at the end of the lap prior to the stop. If the race is to resume, Drivers will be warned at least 10 minutes in advance. The race will re-start in “slow” mode (signalled by the yellow flag).
