EDITORIAL After the opening round of the KZ/KZ2 europeans in Sarno, Italy, here we go with the ďŹ rst act for the KFJ and KF categories, in Portimao, Portugal. From the maximum performance shifter action we are moving on to the show powered by single ratio transmission engines, where driving must be absolutely precise and speed through bends becomes crucial for overall performance and fast lap times. this is why the KF and KFJ categories are compared to the direct drive 100 cc karting of the past and are considered fundamental for driver development. the KF Junior, in particular, is becoming the real basis of the sport, where young drivers come of age as professionals and lay the ground work for their future growth in motorsports. TITLE HOLDERS

2014 CHAMPIONS 2014 was the year of the Brits, with enaam Ahmed in KFJ and callum Ilott in KF claiming the title of cIK-FIA european champion in their respective classes. Both aces are now on to the next brilliant step in their careers, facing their first season in formula racing. the field is thus clear for two new champions to emerge. May the battle begin!

Enaam Ahmed (GB) - FA Kart/Vortex

In 2014 Enaam Ahmed won almost everything there was to win in the KFJ category, including the CIK-FIA European and World Championships, giving a seamless show of his superior talent and of the competitive edge of the Ricky Flynn Motorsport team and the FA chassis/ Vortex engine combination. This year Ahmed is debuting in the premiere edition of the UK’s FIA-certified MSA F4 Formula Series, with the Arden Motorsport Team. The team chose to take the 15 year old on board after following his great karting career and seeing it reach an all-time high last year.

He started the 2014 season as one of the big favorites of the KF and he ended it as class Champion! Last year, Callum Ilott battled his way to the top with the Zanardi Strakka Racing team, guided by Dino Chiesa’s vast expertise, and powered by the successful Zanardi chassis/Parilla engine “package”. Today, the 16 year old from Hertfordshire has just completed a winter program of comprehensive F3 testing with Carlin Motorsport and is ready to step on track for the Formula 3 European Championship with the Red Bull Junior team. The amazing achievement confirms that Ilott is a natural born talent, but it also proves once again that karting prepares young drivers to become great motorsport stars.

TECH FOCUS

KF AND KFJ COMPARED the technical difference between KF and KFJ karts translate in different levels of chassis and engine performance, matching the fact that the KF is for more experienced drivers, while the KF-Junior caters to younger talents. the only factor that goes in favor of more performance for the KFJ category is the lower minimum weight limit.

In terms of engine, the first visible difference between the two classes is the presence of the power valve only in the KF (positioned near the exhaust port on the cylinder). This valve helps to give more elasticity to the engine over a wide range of revolutions. While not visible from the ourside, there are, however, other key engine differences. The electronic ignition is limited at 14,000 revs in KFJ and at 15,000 in KF. The minimum volume of the combustion chamber is 12 cc for the KFJ and 9 cc for the KF. The internal diameter of the carburetor is also different: in the KFJ it is set at 20 mm and in the KF at 24 mm, allowing a greater amount of mixture to reach the engine. Finally, the exhaust port

06

angle is also more limited in the KFJ, maxing out at 170째, while in the KF it can reach 194째. In terms of chassis, there are two main differences. The first has to do with tire make: this year the official providers are LeCont for KFJ and Vega for KF. The other major chassis difference has to do with the brake system: the KF-Junior prohibits the use of front brakes, while the KF category allows for them. Finally, the classes also differ in terms of minimum weight allowed for the kart plus driver. Since Junior drivers generally weigh less, the KFJ sets the minimum weight at 145 kg. KF regulations raise the bar by 13 kg, for a limit of 158 kg.

KF Front brakes are allowed KF karts run on higher performance engines, thanks to the presence of the exhaust valve, an extra 1,000 revs and a greater carburetor diameter

The KFJ engine has the rev limiter set at 14,000, the carburetor diameter at 20 mm max, and the combustion chamber volume set at 12 cc

REGULATIONS

THE KEY RULES CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM the KF and KFJ european championship is run over three rounds per class. each round comprises a final phase divided in Pre-Final and Final or Pre-Final 1, Pre-Final 2 and Final depending on the number of participants. Final championship standings are established considering 80% of the results of each driver, rounded up or down to the nearest figure. the worst Intermediate Post-Heat result and the worst Final result will be discounted.

ELIGIBLE KARTS & EQUIPMENT each driver is entitled to the following equipment: 2 chassis and 2 engines (those marked at Scrutineering), 2 sets of «slick» tires and two sets of «wet weather» tires for use from Qualifying Practice until the Final phase.

STARTING PROCEDURE

At the end of the formation lap, drivers will proceed at a reduced and constant speed towards the start line, creating two lines of karts. Partial crossing of the lanes is liable to a 3 second penalty, while leaving the corridor completely and/or overtaking will be sanctioned with a 10 second penalty. If a driver stops during the formation lap, he may try to start again from the back of the field. If he tries to re-start ahead of the field he will be excluded from the event. Karts must maintain their position until the start signal is given. If the track clerk/Race Director is not satisfied with starting procedures, s/he will call for another formation lap by switching on the orange light.

SUSPENDING & RESUMING A RACE In case of an accident blocking the track or dangerous driving conditions, the track clerk/Race Director may decide to stop the race, ordering the showing of the red flag on the finish line and at Marshals’ posts. If the race is a practice, the following rule applies: all karts must reduce speed and return to the service park. If the race is a Heat, a Prefinal, or a Final, the following rule applies: all karts must reduce speed and will be directed either to the service park entrancem or asked to stop on track. If the race is suspended definitely, the order of arrival at the end of the lap prior to the stop counts as the final classification. If the race is set to resume, drivers will be warned at least 10 minutes in advance. the race will resume under “slow” speed (yellow flag).

POINT SYSTEM

The “hot” phases worth points towards theChampionship title are the HEATS and the FINAL. Points will be assigned to the TOP 10 of the combined Intermediate Standings (established after the Heats) and the TOP 15 of the Final.

STATISTICS

FIGURE IT OUT the KF and KFJ european championship is one of the most important events of the year and it shows from the many nationalities represented on track. In terms of chassis and engine brands, instead, the field is far from even. Yet, quantity doesn’t necessarily mean victory, so we’ll have to wait for the Portimao track to give its verdict.

THE ONES WHO MADE IT

FROM KARTS TO F1 Karting is the best training for young talents who want to follow their dream of becoming an F1 driver. of course, only a few reach the final goal, but the confirmation of the excellent training offered by the KF and KFJ can only be found by looking at today’s F1 champions. Look at them in action, back in their early days or in recent practice runs.

VETTEL Sebastian Vettel was born on 3 July 1987 in Heppenheim, West Germany. He started karting at the age of three and started racing competitively when he was eight, in 1995. Over his eight-year karting career, Vettel won the German Junior Karting Championship, the Monaco Kart Cup and the 2001 European Junior Karting Championship. The following year he was sixth in the Senior ICA Kart Championship and then moved on to car racing. In 2010 he became the youngest ever Formula 1 world champion and held on to the title for four years after that. He is now an official Ferrari driver.

12

LEWIS HAMILTON The two-time F1 world champion, currently in the lead of the 2015 season with Mercedes, won the European Karting crown in the FA class back in 2000. That was just the first of many successes conquered on his way to F1. In fact, from there the Brit went on to win the title in F. Renault and in F.3 and then closed his “training years” as GP2 champion.

WILL STEVENS Born in England in 1991, Will Stevens won the KF2 European title in 2007. That was his “big year” in karting, because that same season he also won the KF2 AsiaPacific Cup. Stevens is the living proof of how far karting can lead up the motorsport ladder. Today he is Manor’s number one driver in F1.

MICHAEL SCHUMACHER “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, karts are my true love … after my wife, of course!” – this is how the 7-time F1 World champion commented his experience in Sarno in 2013. Many years before that, the German (to whom the karting world sends endless love) conquered the European karting crown. It was 1987 and the class was the ICA, what is now called KF.

SEBASTIEN BUEMI Swiss, 26 years old, Sebastien Buemi became European Champion in 2002. His website still speaks about that success: “it’s one of the victories he is most proud of”. The statement means a lot considering it refers to a guy who is the reigning title holder of the World Endurance Championship, the third driver of the Red Bull F1 team and official E-Dams driver in Formula E.

JENSON BUTTON In 1997 Jenson Button signed his name on the first achievement of what would turn out to be an endless list, winning the European Championship in Formula Super A. Twelve years later, he conquered his first (and for now only) world title in Formula 1. Today he races with McLaren next to Fernando Alonso.
