EDITORIAL

The Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth and the Formula Regional European Championship returns to the very fast Autodromo Nazionale in Monza to continue what we are sure will be an electrifying second half of the season. In fact, the rain at Mugello, in addition to giving us spectacular duels and putting the drivers’ skills to the test, shook up the standings of both championships. Those who find themselves chasing cannot now make a single mistake in the next events. Starting with this weekend at what it is a real temple of speed, the historic home of the Italian Grand Prix and the setting for some of the most memorable feats in the history of motorsport. And above all, as far as we are concerned, a permanent fixture in the ACI Sport and WSK Promotion championship calendar. After all, our mission is to develop champions and champions need to perform on big stages.

ITALIANS CHARGING INTO BATTLE IN F4 The Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth has attracted drivers from all over the world since its debut. It could not be otherwise for the first F4 championship in the world established on FIA guidelines, thanks to which the most promising talents in karting have found the entry point to the single-seaters ladder that was missing until then. The best proof of the international, not to say global, character of the series brought to the track since its debut by ACI Sport and WSK Promotion, lies precisely in the championship’s roll of honour, so far won by drivers all over the world, but never by an Italian. Leonardo Lorandi was the one who came closest in 2018, but he came second behind Enzo Fittipaldi. However, this year things could change because there are three names alongside the Italian flag at the top of the championship standings. The first is that of Gabriele Minì, the Prema Powerteam rookie currently in the lead by a good margin thanks to the amazing consistency shown so far, followed by Andrea Rosso of Cram Motorsport and Francesco Pizzi of Van Amersfoort Racing for whom the title is still very much up for grabs. Could this be the right time for Italian fans? We will find out after just three races…

Andrea Cola’s single-seater journey began 4 years ago with Monolite Racing in the F2 Italian Trophy, winning 4 times. Since then, Andrea has continue accumulating experience in Formula 3 cars, winning the Austrian championship three times and, in 2019, the FIA Central European Zone Formula 3 championship.

The Venezuelan talent, coached by Juan Pablo Montoya, made his debut in the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth in 2018 with the Bhaitech team and then moved on to Prema Powerteam the following season. His Formula Regional debut was delayed due to the pandemic, but Alessandro is already moving up the standings.

Andrea Rosso (Cram Motorsport) obtains his third win of the season in race 1, stopping the charge of an attacking Gabriel Bortoleto (Prema Powerteam) who crosses the finish line in second position after starting twelfth due to a penalty caused by an engine change. Rosso sprints with perfect timing after two laps spent behind the safety car due to the rain, while Gabriele Minì (Prema Powerteam), who started in second position is immediately attacked by Filip Ugran (Jenzer Motorsport) at the San Donato. The race loses one of its protagonists already in the first lap, when Jonny Edgar (Van Amersfoort Racing) ends up in the gravel after a collision at the last turn with Dino Beganovic (Prema Powerteam), who was then penalized. Rosso makes no mistakes in the lead, but Bortoleto comes close to pull off a masterclass after having moved into second position on the ninth lap, he manages to cross the finish line less than two seconds behind the leader. The third place goes to Ugran, more than 10 seconds behind and yet still ahead of Minì.

Race 2 is still disputed under the rain and this time, Gabriel Bortoleto (Prema Powerteam) who started from the pole position, manages to prevail over his opponents by achieving his first victory of the season. The Brazilian, however, races the first seven laps behind his teammate Gabriele Minì, who surprises him on the first lap at the entrance of turn two with a lightning attack at the last second. Bortoleto regains the lead on the 8th lap, then winning an intense duel with Minì in which the two swapped positions several times. Behind them, however, Andrea Rosso (Cram Motorsport) gains ground by overtaking, first Dino Beganovic (Prema Powerteam), and then Minì at the next to the last lap. Rosso will then finish second at the finish line just one second from Bortoleto, but a 10 second penalty for an jump start will demote him to 4th position, behind Minì and Beganovic. Fifth position for Jonny Edgar (Van Amersfoort Racing), winner of the duel with Filip Ugran (Jenzer Motorsport).

The asphalt of the Mugello circuit has time to dry for the last race of the weekend, flawlessly won by Gabriele Minì (Prema Powerteam), increasingly being a leader in the Championship. At the start, the poleman Gabriel Bortoleto (Prema Powerteam) loses the lead at the first turn by the Italian, who will remain in the lead even at the restart of the race, after the collision between Lorenzo Patrese (AKM Motorsport) and Han Cenyu (Van Amersfoort Racing), requires the intervention of the safety car. Bortoleto, on the other hand, is handed a 5 second penalty due to contact with Jonny Edgar (Van Amersfoort Racing) which costs the Englishman several positions. At the next-to-last lap for Edgar arrives the second DNF of the weekend after being hit by his own teammate Jak Crawford. At the bottom of the podium in 3rd, occupied by Minì, Dino Beganovic (Prema Powerteam) and Bortoleto, third after the penalty, we find Andrea Rosso (Cram Motorsport) who precedes Francesco Pizzi (Van Amersfoort Racing), fifth after a comeback from the sixteenth position on the grid.

The rain falling on the Mugello circuit forces the marshals to start Race 1 behind the safety car, which gives the drivers two laps to familiarize themselves with the track’s conditions. After the start, Oliver Rasmussen (Prema Powerteam) keeps the lead while, behind, Arthur Leclerc (Prema Powerteam) gets rid of the two KIC Motorsport drivers, Konsta Lappalainen and Juri Vips to get behind the race leader. The Monegasque awaits the third lap to launch an attack giving him the victory, completing a spectacular maneuver around the outside of the Arrabbiata 1, although at the moment the yellow flags were waving. Thanks to his unmatched race pace, Leclerc manages to compensate for the 10 second penalty imposed on him by the marshals and still gets on the first step of the podium ahead of Vips, who got ahead of Rasmussen during the tenth lap. Gianluca Petecof (Prema Powerteam), who started from the fifth position, ends the race at the bottom of the podium in 3rd.

In race 2, the partially wet asphalt has the teams facing a difficult choice in terms of tires, with Leclerc (Prema Powerteam) and teammates Oliver Rasmussen and Gianluca Petecof deciding to play it safe and choosing tires best suited for wet track conditions. A choice that did not pay off and forced them, already during the fourth lap, to return to the pits to mount slick tires, losing positions. The lead then passes to Pierre-Louis Chovet (Van Amersfoort Racing), followed by Gillian Henrion (Gillian Track Events GTE) and Jamie Chadwick (Prema Powerteam), all three lined up on the grid with slick tires. The return of the rain triggers another round of pit-stops to go back to rain tires, but it is on lap 9 that the race completely changes. The safety car called back onto the track following the off-track of Andrea Cola (Monolite Racing), resets the advantage of the first three and, at the restart, Leclerc in a state of grace on the wet track, takes less than two laps to take the lead. The victory, therefore, goes to the Monegasque, followed on the podium by Chovet and Petecof.

41

Emidio Pesce DR Formula RP Motorsport

Arthur Leclerc (Prema Powerteam) makes it a treble at Mugello, winning race 3 after a long fight with teammate Gianluca Petecof. Starting from the pole position, Leclerc immediately finds himself battling with the Brazilian to whom he has to give way while braking into turn 1, before losing even the second position to the advantage of Oliver Rasmussen (Prema Powerteam) and ending up in the 3rd position. On the second lap, the Danish driver tries to attack Petecof, ending up on the grass and re-entering the track behind Leclerc. The judges attribute the blame for Rasmussen going off-track to Petecof, who thus receives the white and black flag before being overtaken by Leclerc. Once in the lead, the Monegasque tries to pull a gap, engaging a long-distance duel with Petecof with quick laps. The positions remain unchanged and Leclerc will once again climb to the top step of the podium ahead of Petecof and Rasmussen, while Patrik Pasma wins the duel at KIC Motorsport with Konsta Lappalainen for the fourth position.
