It will be very difficult to forget this season, marked by the difficulties due to the situation we all know, but which, from the sporting side of things, has definitely achieved all the objectives that ACI Sport and WSK Promotion had set themselves at the beginning of the year. We were sure of one thing on the weekend of August 2nd when, three months after the date originally planned, the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth and the Formula Regional European Championship finally got underway at the Misano World Circuit, that we would have made it to the end. And in fact, here we are at the grand finale in Vallelunga to celebrate another year of the great motorsport, lived with our heart in our throats, which has offered us overtakes, counter-overtakes and that has still brought many young drivers to the attention of fans around the world. A season which has already given us a new champion in F4 and that is offering us a finish filled with goosebumps in the Formula Regional. Let us get ready then, as the last act of the unpredictable, electrifying and exciting 2020 season that is just about to take place.

GABRIELE MINÌ: A HOMEGROWN CHAMPION Just 3 years have passed since Gabriele Minì, then engaged in kart racing in the Mini category, won his first WSK Super Master Series in 2017 at the wheel of Parolin Racing Kart powered by TM Racing. Three years in which the development of the new champion of the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth has been unstoppable. In 2018, as a rookie in the category, he immediately becomes WSK Super Master Series champion in the OK-Junior class. But that is not all, in 2019 at his big transition to the OK category, always as a rookie, he conquers the 3rd and 4th rounds respectively in the WSK Super Master Series and the WSK Euro Series. Now in 2020, with the arrival to the single-seaters where, relying not only on talent but also on the consistency in performance and the ability to manage the race weekend matured in the often fierce karting races, Gabriele is the first Italian driver to win the title of the Italian Championship in seven years. A path, that of Gabriele Minì, which is also a victory for the ACI Sport and WSK Promotion project, which continues to be seen by the best younger drivers coming from karting as an ideal landing point for a prestigious and competitive first experience in a single-seater.

Gabriele Minì (Prema Powerteam) makes no mistakes and wins race 1 after starting from the pole position and keeping the lead from start to finish. On the podium with him climb Dino Beganovic (Prema Powerteam) and Jak Crawford (Van Amersfoort Racing) who, after the exit of the safety car entered to allow the recovery of Gabriel Bortoleto’s (Prema Powerteam), Axel Gnos’ (G4 Racing) and Sebastian Ogaard’s (Bhaitech) vehicles, engage in a spectacular duel for second position. At the restart, Beganovic flanks and overtakes Crawford, but the American fights back when there are just over 5 minutes to go with an overtake around the outside at the Tamburello corner. In the same lap Beganovic manages to recover his position, and this time definitively, at the Piratella corner. Oliver Bearman (US Racing) is fourth at the finish line, but he is then penalized by 5” and ends up seventh. In the final, the British driver manages to resist the attack of Leonardo Fornaroli (Iron Lynx) who ends at the foot of the podium thanks to Bearman’s penalty. Taking advantage of the 5 seconds penalty given to the Englishman are also Jonny Edgar (Van Amersfoort Racing) and Sebastian Montoya (Prema Powerteam), who battles for most of the race with a Kirill Smal (Prema Powerteam), eighth at the finish. 77

Jonny Edgar Van Amersfoort Racing

Dino Beganovic (Prema Powerteam) sets his first seal on the F4 Championship powered by Abarth at the end of a race in which the safety car is called to the track well 4 times. The Swede racer, after blocking the attack of Gabriele Minì (Prema Powerteam), when the lights go out is able to manage all the restarts. The race, in fact, is interrupted for the first time to recover the car of Axel Gnos (G4 Racing), then following the contact between Sebastian Ogaard (Bhaitech) and Dexter Patterson (Bhaitech), a third time due to the offtrack of Bence Válint (Van Amersfoort Racing) and, finally, following the accident of Sebastian Montoya (Prema Powerteam) which forces the drivers to finish the race behind the safety car. Gabriele Minì gets on the podium in second position ahead of Jak Crawford (Van Amersfoort Racing) who manages to keep Joshua Dürksen (BWT Mücke Motorsport) at bay. Andrea Rosso (Cram Motorsport), penalized for an irregular restart, ends up definitely out of the fight for the title in which only Minì and Francesco Pizzi (Van Amersfoort Racing), twenty-fifth at the finish line after a car spin, remain.

With a second spot in race 3 behind Jak Crawford (Van Amersfoort Racing), Gabriele Minì (Prema Powerteam) mathematically conquers the champion title of the 2020 Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth. Starting from the pole, Minì maintains the lead for 10 laps, when Crawford, after freeing himself from Dino Beganovic (Prema Powerteam) in the eighth lap, is able to take the lead with an overtaking at the Rivazza corner. Minì remains in the wake of the American until the finish line, setting the fastest lap, yet unable to complete the attack on the driver. Behind Beganovic, third on the podium, Jonny Edgar (Van Amersfoort Racing) precedes the teammate Francesco Pizzi, who recovers from the ninth position on the grid after having spent most of the race in a fight with Leonardo Fornaroli (Iron Lynx), Edgar and Sebastian Montoya (Prema Powerteam). The Colombian is also involved in another intense duel with Gabriel Bortoleto (Prema Powerteam).

Ian Rodriguez (DR Formula RP Motorsport) takes the victory at his first appearance in the Formula Regional European Championship, after actually starting from the pole due to a gearbox problem which prevents Oliver Rasmussen (Prema Powerteam), author of the best time in qualifying, to line up at the start of the race. At the start, Rodriguez strongly defends himself from the attack of Dennis Hauger (Van Amersfoort Racing) who has to lift the foot and give way to Arthur Leclerc (Prema Powerteam). The Monegasque then tries to put pressure on the leader of the race who, however, does not give in and, on the contrary forces his opponent to the mistake at the Rivazza turn, with Hauger taking the opportunity to return definitively to second position. Off the podium, Pierre-Louis Chovet (Van Amersfoort Racing) is ahead of the KIC Motorsport duo formed by Konsta Lappalainen and Patrik Pasma, while Gillian Henrion (Gillian Track Events GTE) places himself seventh ahead of the title contender Gianluca Petecof (Prema Powerteam).

An unexpected turn of events during the first lap completely changes the fate of race 2. Arthur Leclerc (Prema Powerteam), who started from the pole, suddenly slows down at the Variante Alta exit due to a technical problem (which will force him to a DNF), thus giving the lead to Patrik Pasma (KIC Motorsport), first with a margin at the finish line. The Finn is more than six seconds ahead of Ian Rodriguez (DR Formula RP Motorsport), who gets on the podium for the second time on the weekend, and Gianluca Petecof (Prema Powerteam), who thus returns to the top of the Championship standings. The Brazilian, who started sixth, immediately gains two positions at the start and resists to the pressure from Pierre-Louis Chovet (Van Amersfoort Racing), first, and Dennis Hauger (Van Amersfoort Racing), after. Oliver Rasmussen (Prema Powerteam), who started from the last box after failing to take part in the qualifying, crosses the finish line shortly behind Chovet in sixth place and ahead of Konsta Lappalainen (KIC Motorsport) and Gillian Henrion (Gillian Track Events GTE).

Patrik Pasma (KIC Motorsport) does not make any mistakes even in race 3, where he achieves his fourth victory of the season over Arthur Leclerc (Prema Powerteam). The Finn is flawless even at the restart from the safety car regime, which entered the track 10 minutes before the half hour expired to allow the recovery of Gillian Henrion’s car (Gillian Track Events GTE). The last race of the weekend witnessed the first misstep by Ian Rodriguez (DR Formula RP Motorsport), who spun at the Variante Alta’s exit during the second lap while in third position. Pierre-Louis Chovet (Van Amersfoort Racing) is on the last step of the podium, preceding Gianluca Petecof (Prema Powerteam) and Dennis Hauger (Van Amersfoort Racing). Hauger, after many unsuccessful attempts, manages to prevail on Konsta Lappalainen (KIC Motorsport) with an overtaking at the Variante Alta in the first lap after the restart. Behind Hauger is Oliver Rasmussen (Prema Powerteam), who climbs another six positions starting from the back of the grid.

Oliver Rasmussen Prema Powerteam

FR / CHAMPIONSHIP It will be an incandescent finale that we will see this weekend, not only because Gianluca Petecof and Arthur Leclerc (respectively in first and second place in the Championship) are separated by only two points, but because Oliver Rasmussen and Patrik Pasma are still mathematically in the running for the Championship.
FR / ROOKIE Gianluca Petecof’s margin over Arthur Leclerc, standing at 26 points after the weekend in Imola, becomes more reassuring in the Rookie rankings. Pierre-Louis Chovet gains ground on Oliver Rasmussen, while Gillian Henrion manages to keep fifth place.
FR / TEAM With the title already awarded to Prema Powerteam, the battle for the second spot continues between KIC Motorsport and Van Amersfoort Racing, with the latter gaining only 4 points over his competitors. DR Formula RP Motorsport, instead, rises to fourth place ahead of Gillian Track Events GTE and Monolite Racing.
