EDITORIAL

by Luca De Donno

Once again, the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth provided entertainment and emotions right from the first bends. There were three different winners in the first round, a wide range of podium contenders and no holds barred duels. And together with those who are ready to confirm the good pace shown in Misano, there are also drivers who are anxious to take their first revenge. What better occasion to show off, then, if not that of the second round at the legendary Enzo e Dino Ferrari circuit in Imola? A track on which indelible pages of the history of motorsport have been written and which, finally, returned to being part of the Formula 1 World Championship calendar. And which we will leave, perhaps, with the first answers to the question “who are the drivers to beat?”. Or maybe not, since, once again this year, the championship organised by ACI Sport with the help of WSK Promotion really has numerous contenders for the title. And this is gives satisfaction to everyone striving to be successful at the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth.

From its first edition in 2014, the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth immediately established itself as one of the major talent incubators in the international motoring scene. This is thanks to the extraordinary work of the FIA and ACI Sport, with the support of WSK Promotion. Their project to develop a bridge between karts and single-seaters in which the drivers could compete on equal terms has proved, in a short time, a pool from which all the teams engaged in higher class championships started to draw, up to F1. And the grid of the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth for the 2020 season includes the start of “special observation” drivers, in other words young drivers who have already become part of the so-called Junior Team (or Driver Academy, if you prefer) of three teams currently engaged in the Formula 1 World Championship. These are the Red Bull Junior Team, Ferrari Driver Academy and Sauber Academy, three of the most active Driver Development programs around, which will follow the progress of 4 promising youngsters in the championship.

2

In particular, the Red Bull Junior Team is fielding 2 drivers, all working for the Dutch organisation Van Amersfoort Racing. The first is the British driver Jonny Edgar, an old acquaintance, if that’s how we can put it, of the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth in which he also took part last season, achieving tenth place overall at the end of the championship and finishing third in the Rookie standings (won by a certain Paul Aron, a former member of the Mercedes Junior Team). The second is his teammate Jak Crawford, who flew from Houston, Texas, to come and compete in Europe. The Swede Dino Beganovic, of Prema Powerteam, Credits: who on the other hand, is the Dino Beganovic Facebook page ace in the hole of the Ferrari Driver Academy, who recruited him at the beginning of 2020 after the excellent experience he gained in karting, where he also raced successfully in numerous championships organised by WSK Promotion. Finally, the Sauber Academy lines up the Scottish driver Dexter Patterson, a former opponent of Dino Beganovic in karting, a category in which he also won a world championship in 2017, driving this year for the Bhaitech team.

The start of race 1 saw Gabriele Minì (Prema Powerteam), Francesco Pizzi (Van Amersfort Racing), Leonardo Fornaroli (Iron Lynx) and Sebastian Montoya (Prema Powerteam), in the top four on the starting grid, maintain their respective positions. The race, however, was interrupted as early as the second lap, when the Safety Car entered the track to allow the removal of the rear wing lost by Piotr Wisnicki (Jenzer Motorsport). At the restart, Filip Ugran (Jenzer Motorsport) was in time to move to third position before a new entry of the Safety Car, this time following the off-track of Hamda Al Qubaisi (Abu Dhabi Racing). When the race resumed, Sebastian Montoya, in fifth place, suffered attacks from Dino Beganovic (Prema Powerteam) and Pietro Delli Guanti (BVM Racing), while Minì managed to successfully resist the pressure of Francesco Pizzi. In the end, Gabriele Minì won in front of Pizzi, who defended his second place from an aggresive Ugran. Fornaroli, who finished fourth ahead of Beganovic, Delli Gunti and Gabriel Bortoleto (Prema Powerteam), who overtook teammate Montoya.

Andrea Rosso (Cram Motorsport) and Francesco Pizzi (Van Amersfort Racing) both had a great start from the third and second positions, thanks to which they managed to take the first bend in front of pole-sitter Gabriele Minì (Prema Powerteam). In an attempt to recover the lead, the latter first conceded his flank to Filip Ugran (Jenzer Motorsport) only to lose another position in favour of Sebastian Montoya (Prema Powerteam). Andrea Rosso, in the meantime, took advantage of the tussle to put some distance between himself and his pursuers, until the Safety Car entered about halfway through the race, following the exit from the track of Cenyu Han (AKM Motorsport). At the restart, Rosso had to defend his position from Ugran, allowing the return of Pizzi and Minì. The latter, in the meantime, had in fact slipped into fourth position. The battle between Pizzi and Ugran for second place, in which the Romanian of Jenzer Motorsport prevailed in the end, allowed Rosso to win and slightly stretch a margin of more than one second.

Francesco Pizzi (Van Amersfort Racing) managed, from second position, to take the lead in the race on the first lap against Gabriele Minì (Prema Powerteam), who had instead started from pole position. The Van Amersfort Racing driver then managed to extend his lead over the Prema Powerteam flagship driver, who was followed closely by teammate Dino Beganovic. Behind him, Filip Ugran (Jenzer Motorsport) failed to keep up with the top three and soon accumulated a gap of 5 seconds. At the end, Minì managed to put pressure on Pizzi, but when Sebastian Ogaard (Bhaitech) went off the track, this forced the marshals to end the race using the Virtual Safety Car system. Pizzi crossed the finish line first in front of Minì and Beganovic, while Ugran, in fourth place, was ahead of Sebastian Montoya (Prema Powerteam), who ended up winning an intense battle for fifth position against Andrea Rosso (Cram Motorsport), who finished eighth, and Pietro Delli Guanti (BVM Racing), who finished seventh behind Jesse Salmenautio (Bhaitech).
