Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth
It was enough to get the engines running... and the Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth gave us entertainment and emotions. In the 2017 season’s debut weekend, there was certainly no lack of emotion, especially for those who, only savoured one result: victory. In fact, Misano showed us a driver in state of grace, capable of finishing in front of everyone in both the qualifying practice and in all three races. However, all this should not deceive us, because it was a real battle and, above all, there really is a long way to go. It will be at Adria that we shall have the first clues and where so many “pretenders to the throne” will have the first chance of revenge.

FERNANDEZ IS THE FIRST WINNER OF THE 2017

Sebastian Fernandez (Bhaitech) continued his great form shown in qualifying (where he gained the pole position both in Race 1 and Race 2) taking an untroubled win in Race 1. Getting away well from start, the Venezuelan not only put a comfortable margin between himself and his pursuers, but he also did not waiver in the slightest when the Safety Car entered the circuit on lap 13, due to the American Juan Correa (Prema Power Team) and the Indian Kush Maini (Jenzer Motosport) who both left the circuit but were ok after the incident, erasing his advantage. Fernandez can also take the satisfaction of recording the fastest lap of the race. Second was the Russian Artem Petrov (DR Formula), who drove superbly to recover from 8th on the grid. Third was the Estonian Juri Vips (Prema Power Team) who got the better of a race long duel with Lorenzo Colombo (Bhaitech) who finished 4th. In fifth place was the New Zealand driver Marcus Armstrong (Prema Power Team), ahead of the first Rookie: the Italian Leonardo Lorandi (Bhaitech). Sophia Flörsch (BWT Mucke Motorsport) was first in the Women’s Trophy thanks to her 19th place overall.

FERNANDEZ WINS AGAIN IN RACE 2
4
sebastian fernandez (bhaitech)
Under cloudy skies and with the temperature hovering around 16 degrees, it was again Sebastian Fernandez and his Bhaitech team who led the way to lead the race ahead of all others. As in Race 1, the Venezuelan did not surrender his lead at any stage after getting away well from pole position. This time however, his team mate Lorenzo Colombo, shadowed him closely for the entire race and at the chequered flag he was just 8 tenths of a second behind. Not only this, but the Italian also took the race’s fastest lap albeit just 7 thousandths of a second faster than Fernandez. On the third step of the podium was the New Zealand driver Marcus Armstrong (Prema Power Team), who precedes his team mate Juri Vips, who in the final laps looked as though he would make an attack for third place, but was just unable to do so. Further back was the race for fifth place, with the Canadian Kami M. Laliberté (Van Amersfort Racing) ahead of the Brazilian Felipe Drugovich (Van Amersfoort Racing). Lorandi (Bhaitech), 8th overall, still took the win in the Rookie Trophy despite being penalised 5 seconds (having been adjudged to have cut the outside line of the circuit). Second Rookie was Enzo Fittipaldi and third the Italian Mariano Lavigna (Cram Motorsport).

A BHAITECH DOUBLE IN RACE 3
6
sebastian fernandez (bhaitech)
Three race wins from three starts for Sebastian Fernandez (Bhaitech), this time without the advantage of starting from pole position. The leader of the grid for Race 3, made up from the driver’s second best qualifying times, was Lorenzo Colombo (Bhaitech), who struggled away off the line and only made it down into the first turn beyond the tenth place. The Italian then mounted a grand recovery that saw him eventually finish second, aided also by the retirements of Leonardo Lorandi (Bhaitech) and Juri Vips (Prema Power Team), who touched in turn one effectively ending their chances there and then. On the final step of the podium was the Russian Artem Petrov (DR Formula), who himself made a fine drive from grid nine. Fourth place for Felipe Drugovich (Van Amersfort Racing), who finished in second on the road but was penalised five seconds for exceeding the track limits. Fifth for another Brazilian Enzo Fittipaldi (Prema Power Team), first in the Rookie Trophy, followed by the Dutch driver Job Van Uitert (Jenzer Motorsport) and the Guatemalan Ian Rodriguez (DRZ Benelli). In the Rookie Trophy, Fittipaldi was followed by the Italian Andrea Dell’Accio (Henry Morrogh Racing), who drove a great race to come from grid 28, and Davide Venditti (Diegi Motorsport).

No mistakes by Venezuelan Fernandez, who left Misano with the maximum number of points possible. He was followed by team-mate Colombo, who was more consistent over the weekend than Petrov, third in the standings and first among the “non Bhaitech” drivers.

There is already a straight face off between Fittipaldi and Lorandi, which sees the Brazilian ahead thanks to victory in Race 3. Behind them there is a full complement of pursuers, starting with Giorgio Carrara, third with a one point advantage over Dell’Accio and 5 points over Ghiretti.

Among the women, German Sophia Flörsch began with a clean sweep of wins. It is worth noting that, for the title to be awarded, there must be at least two verified leaders during the season and each must have participated in at least 5 events.

A single race is undoubtedly not enough to judge, however what Bhaitech managed to achieve in the first round of the championship in Misano feels like a show of strength. The pursuers have been warned: to avoid a “breakaway”, the comeback must already begin in Adria.

THE FASTEST DRIVERS IN MISANO Slightly simplifying what happened in Misano, we could write: “One man on his own in command”. In fact, the Venezuelan Sebastian Fernandez won all the races in the first round of the championship and was the best in both qualifying sessions. He also achieved one of the three “best laps” of the weekend. The only driver to enter this one-way competition was his team mate Lorenzo Colombo, who achieved the other two “best laps”.
Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth
The “classic” round in the Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth at the Adria circuit, a relatively recent track on the motorsport scene, compared to other historic race tracks, but one which has already become an international benchmark thanks to first rate services and a very technical and demanding track.

Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth
THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD... OUT ON THE TRACK The F.4 Championship powered by Abarth is officially preceded by the word “Italian”, but the numbers clearly point to the fact that it could easily be replace by the word “International”. Indeed, the first round of the 2017 season also confirmed the truly international parterre of the drivers who took to the track. At Misano there was a total of 17 different nationalities representing countries from all over the world: from India to Brazil, from New Zealand to Estonia and, naturally, all the major European countries in which the tradition of motorsport is historically rooted. After all, in the three seasons so far, the championship roll of honour has seen 8 different countries alternate on the podium of the overall standings. Only Italy, in the first edition in 2014, managed to place two representatives in second and third place behind Canada, represented by Stroll. In 2015, Estonia finished ahead of China and Russia, thanks to Aron. Meanwhile, last year the Argentinian Siebert triumphed, ahead of Germany and Mexico.
