The third round of the Italian F.4 Championship Powered by Abarth takes us to Imola. This fast and extremely technical circuit is ideal for this phase of the series. In fact, this year’s young talents are entering this round with 6 races under their belt and so with considerable experience. In addition, this weekend, participants will get a chance to familiarize with bends that are set to play a crucial role farther down the road, since we will be returning to Imola for the penultimate act of the title hunt. In two weeks’ time, the championship will move to the amazing Mugello venue - another high-profile track that, after welcoming “our” F4 drivers, is set to host the sixth match of the 2015 MotoGP. From there on to Adria, then again to Imola, as we were saying, before the grand finale in Misano, another racing temple... the show will keep on rolling from one top-notch event to the other, hitting all of Italy’s famous raceways.

GUAN YU ZHOU TAKES THE WIN

Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth

Of the 29 drivers registered for the second round of the Italian F.4 Championship Powered by Abarth, Robert Shwartzman (Mücke Motorsport) conquers the first qualifying session (1’53.309), securing pole for Race 1. In session two, however, it is Guan Yu Zhou (Prema Powerteam) who emerges as the fastest of all, stopping the watch at 1’52.882. At his championship debut, Lando Norris (Mücke Motorsport) is second both times: in the first turn over Zhou and in the second ahead of point leader Ralf Aron (Prema Powerteam), who improves from his seventh place finish in the initial session. In Race 1, Shwartzman thus starts first and takes the lead, managing to build a nice gap from the group. Norris, second on grid, unfortunately goes off track on lap one due to a contact with Raul Guzman (Malta Formula Racing). Zhou thus manages to slip into second, but the German leader is far ahead. Then, on lap three, the safety car steps on track and makes the group compact again an, at this point, the Prema Powerteam driver from China finds himself glued to attached to Shwartzman and overtakes with a splendid sprint that allows him to fly

away for the win. After starting a bit back, due to his delay in the first qualifying session, Aron charges up the field and conquers the third step of the podium. In the Woman Trophy, Wiktoria Pankiewicz closes right ahead of her sister Julia (both RB Racing), but with a gap of almost one second on the best lap. Unfortunately, instead, the accident factor keeps the following drivers from ending the race: Yan Leon Shlom (Malta Formula Racing), Mike Ortmann (Mücke Motorsport), out three laps from the end, and Kikko Galbiati (Antonelli Motorsport), also done two rounds before the finish. In the hit list of the best lap times, David Beckmann (Mücke Motorsport) is the only one who goes below 1’54, precisely on the last lap (1’53. 914). The next best are Marcos Siebert (Jenzer Motorsport), 1’54.024, and Shwartzman, 1’54.216. The race also registers interesting peak speeds: Marino Sato (Vincenzo Sospiri Racing) manages to go past the 240 barrier, reaching 241 km/h at the end of the finish-straight. Next up for speed are Bar Baruch (Israel F4) and Kevin Kanayet Perez (Malta Formula Racing), both able to pull 238.9 km/h.

Seguono Marcos Siebert (Jenzer Motorsport), a 1’54.024, e Shwartzman, a 1’54.216.

ZHOU DOUBLES UP, UNSTOPPABLE

6

Whether he starts up front or at mid-grid, the result is the same: Guan Yu Zhou (Prema Powerteam) continues to dominate the Monza round, taking another win in Race 2, the shortest of the three. By regulation, the start grid of the “sprint” race is determined by the inversion of the Top 10 finishers of Race 1: the Chinese driver thus starts tenth; but in the end is again first. To appreciate what he is capable of, however, we need to go back to the start. After the first corners, it is his teammate Tim Zimmermann, second on grid, who takes control from poleman Marcos Siebert (Jenzer Motorsport), dragging along Mike Ortmann (Mücke Motorsport) and Matteo Desideri (Antonelli Motorsport). The latter eventually moves up to second and attempts an attack, but the German shuts the door and it’s a contact. Result? Desideri eliminated, Zimmerman twentieth. At the finish behind Zhou there are an incisive David Beckmann (Mücke Motorsport) and an incredible Joao Vieira (Antonelli Motorsport), on the rebound from the last spot. In the Woman Trophy battle between the Pankiewicz sisters (RB Racing), Wiktoria again beats Julia and improves her lap time significantly (2.2 seconds faster than the qualifyings).

ZHOU DOES IT AGAIN AND TAKES THE LEAD

10

Incredible weekend for the Prema Powerteam with Guan Yu Zho, who conquers three victories, the points of the overall pole position, and the championship leadership! Based on the order of arrival in the second qualifying session, he is precisely the first on grid, followed by the ultra-fast Lando Norris (MĂĽcke Motorsport) and his Prema teammate Ralf Aron. The spots behind them belong to Robert Shwartzman (MĂĽcke Motorsport), Marcos Siebert (Jenzer Motorsport), David Beckmann (MĂĽcke Motorsport), Mauricio Baiz (Vincenzo Sospiri Racing) and Joao Vieira (Antonelli Motorsport). At the go, Zhou maintains his leadership, but shortly after an accident between four cars completely blocks the track, so the safety car has to intervene. In that precise moment, the Chinese leader was followed by Norris and Siebert; but, at the rolling re-start, his teammate Aron leaps up and snatches second place from Norris. This will be the commanding order until the finish-line: Zhou and Aron, for a nice double Prema podium, and Norris third. Behind the top three, below the chequered flag there are the very fast Shwartzman and Vieira, followed by a great

Bar Baruch (Israel F4), on the rebound from the eleventh spot on grid. The other two competitors who achieve excellent recoveries are Matteo Desideri (Antonelli Motorsport), from sixteenth to seventh, and Marino Sato (Vincenzo Sospiri Racing), from fourteenth to eighth. In the duel for the Woman Trophy between the Pankiewicz twins (RB Racing), it’s a triple win for Wiktoria, who now leads the hunt for the “pink” title with 119 points, against the 83 taken so far by Julia, forced to withdraw from the third race of the weekend. In the chart of the fast laps of Race 3, instead, Viera is the one who leads, with a masterful 1’53.537. Shwartzman, ahead of him at the finish, stands second (1’53.549), but, right behind them, super karting champion Lando Norris proves that the debut didn’t scare him (1’53.615). Zhou and Aron are next, followed by Matteo Desideri, just above the 1’54 mark. The third Monza battle also produces remarkable peak velocities: it is again Marino Sato who lays the pedal to the metal, reaching speeds of 248.2 km/h, but Baruch (243.7 km/h) and Desideri (239.4 km/h) also prove they mean serious business.
