Imola!

Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth

Imola! Nothing else needs saying to get the pulses of motorsport enthusiasts racing. Motorsport has written some indelible pages of its history on this track, consecrating the careers of numerous champions and providing unforgettable entertainment to all fans. It will therefore be particularly gratifying to resume the Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth at this circuit after the short, summer break. The finish line is visible on the horizon: indeed, in just over a month races at Imola, Mugello and Monza will issue their verdicts, rewarding the best, most continuous and determined drivers. However, the joy and excitement of competing on such hallowed tracks is already enough of a reward in itself for all those involved.

ARMSTRONG IS THE FIRST WINNER AT MUGELLO

2

marcus armstrong (Prema Power Team)

The New Zealander Marcus Armstrong (Prema Power Team) recorded the fastest time in the first session of qualifying with a time of 1’48”230. In the second session, thanks to lower temperatures, the times were considerably quicker: 1’47”489 for Juri Vips (Prema Power Team), fastest and therefore pole position for Race 2. At the start of Race 1, the polesitter Armstrong got the best start ahead of his teammate Vips. Getting away well also were the two Italian Bhaitech team drivers Lorenzo Colombo and Leonardo Lorandi. As the leaders pulled away, there was contact at the start however between Job Van Uitert (Jenzer Motorsport) and Sebastian Fernandez (Bhaitech) who were forced into retirement. After some laps behind the Safety Car, the race resumed with the order between the front four unchanged. Fifth was the Indian Kush Maini (Jenzer Motorsport), followed by Fittipaldi (Prema Power Team) and Zendeli (BWT Mücke Motorsport). Lorandi is once again the first in the Rookie Trophy (seven victories in a row for him), ahead of Fittipaldi and the Brit Olli Caldwell (BWT Mücke Motorsport).

REPORT - RACE 2 | ROUND 4 - MUGELLO

Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth

VIPS WINS AHEAD OF HIS TEAMMATE ARMSTRONG

juri vips (prema power team)

Race 2 got under clear blue skies with the temperature sitting at 20 °C. From pole position, the Estonian Juri Vips (Prema Power Team) made a great start to take the lead, meanwhile behind him Leonardo Lorandi (Bhaitech) was defending the attacks of Armstrong (Prema Power Team). The order among the first three remained unchanged, meanwhile the Russian Artem Petrov (DR Formula), who started 8th, passed firstly the two Bhaitech drivers Colombo and Sebastian Fernandez around the outside. On lap 5 the Safety Car entered the fray and then at the restart Armstrong was able to pass Lorandi. From behind, Petrov continued his great run, ultimately taking third position at the end, with Lorandi fourth and the German Lirim Zendeli (BWT Mücke Motorsport) fifth. Race 2 actually finishing behind the Safety Car. Lorandi took the first position in the Rookie Trophy and with him on the podium was the Brasilian Felipe Branquinho (DR Formula), second, and the Argentine Giorgio Carrara (Jenzer Motorsport), third.

4

REPORT - RACE 3 | ROUND 4 - MUGELLO

Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth

VICTORY FOR VAN UITERT. EN PLEIN FOR LORANDI IN THE ROOKIE TROPHY

job van uitert (jenzer motorsport)

In Race 3, a win for the Dutch driver Job Van Uitert (Jenzer Motorsport), who on the Lap 9 passed Vips (Prema Power Team) who would finish second. Third was the Italian Lorenzo Colombo (Bhaitech), who in the final laps attempted a pass to take second but ultimately decided not to risk it in preference for taking points in the championship. There was contact at the start of the race between Maini (Jenzer Motorsport) and the Swiss Mickael Grosso (Corbetta Competizioni), which brought out the red flag. Race 3 was subsequently restarted. Fourth was Fernandez, who on the tenth lap passed his Bhaitech teammate Lorandi, who finished fifth. Sixth for Fittipaldi (Prema Power Team) ahead of Artem Petrov (DR Formula), who had a tremendous battle with Armstrong (Prema Power Team), eighth, after he started 14th. In the Rookie Trophy, a third victory of the weekend for Lorandi, followed by Fittipaldi and Caldwell (BWT Mücke Motorsport).

6

First event of the two planned for this year on the Mugello circuit. The skies over Scarperia (FI) ensured sunshine and summer temperatures. There was certainly plenty of action on the track, and there are also beautiful photos to relive all the emotions given by teams, drivers and the spectators.

The rankings remain unchanged compared to the previous round in the top 5 placings. The difference in points increased slightly, but 12 points between first and second place in the rankings is actually very little. In any case, with 3 weekends still to go, everyone can still make it.

The third consecutive weekend with three wins in the three races competed in by Lorandi, whose lead in the Rookie rankings is becoming ever wider. The difference has reached 100 points and, although nothing has yet been decided, the Italian driver can start to “control” the competition.

F.4 TEAM Thanks to weekend in Mugello, Jenzer Motorsport is back in third place at the expense of DR Formula. In turn, the Prema Power Team gained another 34 points over the Bhaitech team, with a lead of only 64 points.

Having passed the half-way point in the championship, there have been enough races to reach initial conclusions. On this occasion, we are focusing on the race format and the many possibilities that this offers to all drivers to achieve success on the track. Considering pole positions, best laps and wins, there are 11 different drivers who have won at least one of these partial achievements. These figures are in line with those of last year (11 different drivers in pole position, with best laps and wins after 4 rounds also in 2016), confirming the organizers’ constant attention to this aspect. It should also be emphasised that last season, at the end of the year, 14 drivers achieved pole positions, best laps and wins. We will see if 2017, which has been very competitive, will be even better.

F.4: A GREAT SHOWCASE FOR EVERYONE

MICK SCHUMACHER: FROM F.4 TO DAD’S F1 As is known, in 2017 Lance Stroll became the first driver to leave the Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth to debut in F1. During the weekend of the Grand Prix in Spa, Belgium, there was another F.4 star to keep him company, though only for a special occasion. We are talking about Mick Schumacher, protagonist of the 2016 championship (who finished in second place behind Marcos Siebert), who got on the track in Spa behind the wheel of the Benetton B194 with which his dad Michael won his first title in 1994. The same Spa track is the one on which Michael Schumacher achieved his first F1 success in 1992.

CHAMPIONSHIP CIRCUIT Opened in 1952, the Imola circuit has marked the history of Italian and International automobiles in more than half a century. This track, technical and not easy to interpret, is way less than 5 km long, with 12 bends to the left and 9 to the right. The pathways and structures were upgraded in 2007 with

important works by well-known German architect Hermann Tilke. About 70% of the surface was re-asphalted in 2011. At the avant-garde in terms of space and flexibility, Imola’s structure is truly multifaceted, adapting to the best not only in motor racing but also great cultural and musical events.
