Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth
The summer is now in full swing, but it’s not yet time for the drivers of the Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth to go on holiday. In fact, before doing so they have to expend all their physical and mental energy out on the track in order to honour the round at the Mugello circuit. The championship comes to this track, which has marked the career of numerous champions on both twoand four-wheeled vehicles, exactly halfway through its schedule: three races have already taken place and there will still be three races left to run afterwards. The Mugello stands in the middle, an important opportunity for whoever wants to try and shake up the standings by increasing their lead over their rivals or, conversely, make up points that might prove decisive in the final rounds.

RODRIGUEZ’S SPURT TOWARDS VICTORY
2
ian rodriguez (drz benelli)
A stifling heat and a clear skies have welcomed the Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth at Vallelunga. In the first session of qualifying, Artem Petrov (DR Formula) took pole position and Marcus Armstrong (Prema Power Team) was second. In the Qualifying two, instead, the New Zealander went fastest and took the pole ahead Petrov. In the Race 1, Ian Rodriguez (DRZ Benelli), started from third position, passed Armstrong and Petrov, immediately putting a margin between himself and his pursuers. At his shoulder, Armstrong passed Petrov on lap 12, with a good manoeuvre, and finished second. In fourth place was Drugovich (Van Amersfort Racing), ahead of Van Uitert (Jenzer Motorsport) and the first of the Rookies, Lorandi (Bhaitech). For the Rookie Trophy, on the podium were also the Brit Olli Caldwell (BWT Mücke Motorsport) and the German Andreas Estner (ADM Motorsport): both debutants. But after the race, following some decisions by the Race Stewards, Estner was second in the Rookie Trophy and Branquinho (DR Formula) third. Also running a great race was Sophia Flörsch (BWT Mücke Motorsport), who had the bad luck to be pushed wide, whilst attacking Petrov for third position, at the point of the circuit in which the kerbs are highest which in turn damaged her right front suspension.
Caldo torrido e cielo sereno accolgono l’Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth a Vallelunga.

ARMSTRONG FIRST FROM THE START TO THE END

felipe drugovich (Van Amersfoort Racing)
Also Race 2 run under a clear blue skies and with hot weather. A great start from pole position by the New Zealander Armstrong (Prema Power Team) allowed him to control the race from the first until the last lap. Behind him, the Russian Petrov (DR Formula) did well to recover the positions he lost at the start just a few laps from the end, including a great pass on the Brazilian Felipe Drugovich (Van Amersfoort Racing), who was ultimately third. Bad luck for Dutch driver Job Van Uitert (Jenzer Motorsport), who had a racing incident with the German Lirim Zendeli (BWT Mücke Motorsport) which caused the introduction of the Safety Car to the circuit. In fourth position was Festante (DR Formula), who resisted the pressure of the Venezuelan Fernandez (Bhaitech), who finished fifth ahead of his team mate Colombo. Seventh position for Sophia Flörsch (BWT Mücke Motorsport), followed by Ian Rodriguez (DRZ Benelli), Kush Maini (Jenzer Motorsport) and Leonardo Lorandi (Bhaitech). Lorandi therefore won the Rookie Trophy, on the podium with him were Fittipaldi (Prema Power Team) and Caldwell (BWT Mücke Motorsport).

DRUGOVICH WINS ON DEBUT AT VALLELUNGA
felipe drugovich (Van Amersfoort Racing)
Again, Race 3 was held in hot conditions meaning that tyre use became more than ever a critical aspect for all drivers. The winner was the Brazilian Felipe Drugovich (Van Amersfoort Racing): a very good result given it was his first time on the Vallelunga circuit. Right behind him was Petrov (DR Formula), his third podium from the three races, despite the fact that he was given a 5 second penalty for contact with his team mate Festante. A great drive from this one, who resisted the pressure applied to him by Armstrong (Prema Power Team), who finished fourth. In fifth place was Lorenzo Colombo (Bhaitech), who during the final tried to attack for fourth place but thought better of it, keeping one eye on the championship. In the Rookie Trophy, a third victory for Lorandi, followed by Caldwell (BWT Mücke Motorsport) and Fittipaldi (Prema Power Team).

What a battle! After the first three races, the top five drivers in the overall standings are all within 18 points of each other. A single point separates first and second. The others are a bit further behind, but with less than half the championship gone anything can still happen. As shown by Drugovich’s comeback: after scoring no points in the first 2 rounds, he’s now 8th on 52 points after an outstanding result at Vallelunga.

Vallelunga proved to be a fantastic weekend for Lorandi, who managed three first places among the Rookies in the three races. His advantage over Fittipaldi, in second place, rose to 54 points. Not enough to rest on his laurels, with 300 theoretical points still to play for, but enough for it to be clear who the driver to beat is from now until the end of the championship.
F.4 TEAM Team Bhaitech remains firmly ahead in the team standings, but Prema Power Team and DR Formula are in hot pursuit. Jenzer Motorsport had a slight dip at Vallelunga, slipping two places down to fourth.

AN EXTREMELY OPEN SERIES Following Fernandez’s hat-trick of wins in the first round, someone with little foresight may have thought that the 2017 Italian F.4 Championship 2017 was already decided. Nothing could be further from the truth. Indeed, the six races in the two weekend following Misano were won by six different drivers, representing 5 teams and as many nations. Seven drivers of the top eight in the standings have won at least one race, with only Petrov, in fifth, managing to always be competitive, but still in the hunt for his first win. Even more interesting is the comparison with last year: after three races, in 2016 the gap between the first and fifth in the standings was 72.5 points. In 2017, the top 5 drivers are all within a range of 18 points, while the first ten are all within 67 points of each other. It has to be said that, due to the format, there were a total of 263 points available in the first three rounds last year compared to the 225 points available this year, but it is obvious that the 2017 championship is more open and contested than ever after three races.

CHAMPIONSHIP CIRCUITS Mugello is one of Italy’s historic circuits. The chosen circuit for the Italian GP of the MotoGP World Championship, as well as an established location for Formula 1 tests and practice sessions, it was inaugurated in 1974, after decades spanning from 1914 to 1970 in which motor racing at the Mugello road circuit had taken place in the hillsides north of Florence. The track is 5,245 metres long, featuring 15 bends and, a rarity for historic Autodromes, the circuit has never been altered. The escape roads that ensure driver safety are more than ample, as are the boxes (of which there are 20, each measuring 12 x 12 metres). The facilities around the track, located in three paddock areas of 26,000 square metres (central area), 7,000 (medical centre area) and 6,500 (tv compound area), are all first rate.
