EDITORIAL

After the weekend in Vallelunga, Formula Regional European Championship and Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth once again meet up on the same race weekend and on the same circuit. And certainly not just any circuit, but the Hungaroring circuit that has hosted the Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix every season since 1986. This is one of the most tortuous tracks of all, where overtaking is very difficult. Just the difficulty in racing on this track is certainly a great exercise for the drivers of the two WSK Promotion events: in fact, both formulas are a training scenario which allows young people to grow and start to become familiar with the circuits that have made the history of motorsport and continue to be the stage those who dream of becoming racing champions must inevitably face. This is therefore why the trip to Hungary is certainly not accidental: a prestigious track, a high technical level, quality of the facilities and functionality for the growth of the drivers are the distinctive characteristics of the decisions taken in drawing up the racing dates: Formula Regional European Championship and Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth leave nothing to chance.

The Hungaroring circuit was constructed in Hungary, in Mogyoród, a few miles North-East of Budapest, in 1986. Since then it has been a standard fixture of the Formula 1 World Championship. 4,381 metres long, it has a total of 14 bends. Many of these bends are particularly tight and, therefore, it is not easy to overtake. It is not by chance that it has been defined as one of the most tortuous circuits in the world. A curiosity: the official record on this track belongs to Michael Schumacher, who finished a lap in 1’19”071 in 2004.

In Vallelunga, David Schumacher (US Racing) broke the Prema Powerteam dominance that had characterised the first races of the Formula Regional European Championship. The German seemed to be in great form already in the qualifications, getting the second best time behind Isac Blomqvist (Kic Motorsport), but he was then relegated by two positions for incorrect driving during the practice sessions. Then, in the decisive race, the attacks of Enzo Fittipaldi (Prema Powerteam), who during the 21 laps tried numerous times to find space for overtaking, failed, but the tight defence of the winner was impeccable. Therefore, at the waving of the checkered flag, Schumacher was able to raise his arms to the sky, while Fittipaldi had to settle for second place. Marco Siebert (US Racing), who had a clean race with no uncertainties, finished third. After the trio on the podium, it is worth mentioning the excellent race run by Joey Mawson (Van Amersfoort Racing), fourth at the finish line after having had to watch his back from the constant overtaking attempts by Frederik Vesti (Prema Powerteam): the Danish driver attacked the opponent at every turn but couldn’t get through. He finished fifth.

Chiude quinto.

The rain dominated race 2. All the drivers were equipped with wet tyres and at the start the poleman Isac Blomqvist (Kic Motorsport) was quick to stay in the lead, despite Enzo Fittipaldi (Prema Powerteam) trying to overtake him. Indeed, it was this attempt by the Brazilian driver that allowed Frederik Vesti (Prema Powerteam) to slip in, stealing second place. It was just for a few bends, because Fittipaldi attacked again and resumed his position behind the leader. But the race had other surprises in store: the Prema driver threatened Blomqvist again and this time he managed to overtake. The Finn was also overtaken by Vesti and this blow caused him to lose a bit of self-confidence: at the end of the race he was to finish only sixth. Returning to the leader of the race, there was still a surprise to come: during lap 13 Vesti overtook Fittipaldi and gained an unexpected first position which he held to the finish. Second place for his teammate who crossed the finish line very closely pursued by Olli Caldwell (Prema Powerteam), for an incredible hat trick for the Prema Powerteam. Joey Mawson also did well, finishing fourth, as did Sophia Flörsch, who finished fifth (both racing for Van Amersfoort Racing).

Heavy rain in Misano, with a rolling start for the race 1. This is something that did not create any uncertainty for Gianluca Petecof (Prema Powerteam): in fact, after obtaining pole position, it is the Brazilian who proved to be the best in the final as well, always remaining in first position and controlling his opponents until the finish. With this performance the young driver, a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy program, confirmed that he is one of the most serious candidates for the trophy, with 3 victories out of 4 races he participated in. Behind him, Denis Hauger (Van Amersfoort Racing) and Niklas Krütten (Van Amersfoort Racing) reached podium positions: the teammates took about half of the race to overtake Paul Aron (Prema Powerteam), who finished 4th in absolute terms and 1st among the rookies, to then launch themselves in pursuit of the leader, but their attempts failed to get close to their objective. It is worth pointing out the excellent fast lap of William Alatalo (BWT Mücke Motorsport), the only one, along with Krütten to get below 1’47. The Finn reached the finish line in sixth position behind Oliver Rasmussen (Prema Powerteam). 55 Roee Meyuhas

The Misano track did not improve for race 2 and the heavy rain continued to have its say. These are conditions that enhance the driving skills of pilots from Northern European countries, who are certainly more accustomed to this type of climate. In fact, the first to finish was Norwegian Dennis Hauger (Van Amersfoort Racing), who achieved his first victory in a single-seater but not without difficulty, because Niklas Krütten (Van Amersfoort Racing) is a very complicated rival to manage. The German, who started in fifth position, was leading the race after 2 laps. However, Hauger did not give up and finally overtook two laps from the end. Gianluca Petecof (Prema Powerteam), who recovered from sixth position at the start, finished third. Paul Aron (Prema Powerteam) once again ended up with a bitter taste in his mouth. He had been in pole position but was penalized by a drive trough that relegated him to last place for having positioned himself badly at the start and having put his vehicle into reverse gear. Among the Rookies, a good win for Roee Meyuhas (Cram Motorsport), followed by Joshua Duerksen (BWT Mücke Motorsport) and Jonny Edgar (Jenzer Motorsport). 28 Sebastian Freymuth AS Motorsport

RACING IN MISANO

18

The rain stopped race 3 from going ahead. Never mind: the many other occasions in which races were held were in any case spectacular. The Misano circuit has proven to be the ideal circuit for round 2 of the Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth.

WORLDWIDE BROADCAST The events promoted by WSK Promotion have always also stood out for excellence from a media point of view. The European Championship Regional Formula, which can count on a truly international media distribution programme, is no exception. Two exceptional entities are called upon to collaborate in this project: on the one hand, Monza Informa deals with content management and video production. On the other hand, Empa, a reliable company in this sector, distributes the product. All the races are covered by live satellite signal transmission and, via various broadcasters, are broadcast all over the world. The live broadcast in Italian is assigned to channel 228 of the Sky platform: “AutoMotoTV”. It is also possible to watch the races in streaming on the official Facebook page of the class and on the motorsport.tv website. The production of live broadcasts is of a high level, in Full HD, realised with the best technology. Furthermore, in the field, a crew is responsible for holding interviews and producing content for social media circuits and news networks, as well as creating the highlight tv magazine: a format of about 30 minutes that summarises race weekends and is broadcasted all over the world thanks to a number of international partner channels.

ITALIA ACADEMY CIRCUIT 2019 PROJECT The Formula Regional Championship has been improved by a new project aimed at training young motoring talent. In fact, as part of the event, ACI Sport has decided to include the Italia Academy Circuit 2019 Project: a preparation program, under the direct supervision of the ACI Sport Federal Piloting School, which aims to guide drivers through an FIA career path. There will be four events that will coincide with the Italian stages of the championship: Vallelunga (5 May), Imola (1 September), Mugello (6 October) and Monza (20 October). All 15 year old drivers with an ACI sport C Junior license who have participated or are participating in the Formula 4 Championships are admitted. In fact, the objective is to prepare younger drivers for a gradual transition to the higher class for the following year. The participants in the 2019 Academy Circuit will be transparent for the purposes of the rankings of the Formula Regional European Championship.

Matteo Nannini Nannini, driver of DF Corse by Corbetta, participated in the Italia Academy Circuit project at the Formula Regional Championship weekend in Vallelunga.

THE NEW WSK STATION The new, futuristic WSK Station debuted at the Vallelunga stage at the weekend of 5 May. A structure composed of two trucks that, once positioned in the paddock, are joined by a roof and a facade of elegant tinted windows. Inside, there are areas for relaxation and for meetings with sponsors, large monitors to follow the times of competitions and qualifications, refreshment points, meeting and briefing areas. A new reference point in the paddock, available to pilots, teams, the press, professionals and guests.
