The Formula Regional European Championship and the Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth has reached its halfway point. With both championships still up for grabs, the ACI Sport and WSK Promotion circus arrived at the Mugello international racetrack: a track with a unique charm and which was recently also appreciated by the drivers of another circus, that of Formula 1. The weekend of the Tuscan Grand Prix reminded us, once again, how anything can really happen in a race. After all, motorsport is also this: preparing for the unexpected, planning your moves and finding the strength to start again with your head down when things don’t go the right way. This is the most important lesson for a young driver, because the road to becoming a champion is a long and winding one, just like the Florentine track, and, often, being the fastest is not enough to be the best as well.

NEW DRIVERS TAKE PART IN OFFICIAL TESTING The Italian F4 Championship powered by Abarth and the Formula Regional European Championship continue to attract new aspiring drivers again this season. We had further proof of this in the two days of tests held right here at Mugello where the very young Taylor Barnard, currently with the Rosberg Racing Academy, and Lorenzo Patrese, son of the 1992 Formula 1 vice-world champion Riccardo, got to grips with the Tatuus F4 T-014 of the AKM Motorsport team. Nicolas Baptiste, who took to the track with a CRAM Motorsport car, was among the kart drivers who developed their basic skills in the WSK Promotion championships and are waiting to turn 15 years of age to race in F4. Formula 4 also saw the return of Filip Ugran, who unfortunately had to miss the Red Bull Ring race due to the restrictions imposed on travelling overseas. On the other hand, the Australian Jack Doohan, so far competing in the Formula 3 championship, joined the group of drivers involved in Formula Regional within the Prema Powerteam, with whom he completed both test days. The best times at the end of the two days at Mugello were those of Dino Beganovic and Gabriel Bortoleto for Formula 4, while Oliver Rasmussen remained undefeated in Formula Regional.

FR DRIVERS: WHERE ARE THEY NOW? The Formula Regional European Championship is halfway through what is only its second season, but the drivers who developed their skills in the series promoted by ACI Sport, with the help of WSK Promotion, are already showing what they are made of in the higher classes. Certainly, starting with the champion of the 2019 edition, Frederik Vesti, who spent this year in Formula 3, again for the Prema Powerteam, with whom he won last year. It was an excellent debut for the Dane, in which he came very close to being a contender for the title, also having the satisfaction of winning three races in Spielberg, Monza and Mugello, respectively, the same circuits where he managed a total of 5 wins in the last edition of the Formula Regional. Enzo Fittipaldi, David Schumacher, Igor Fraga and Olli Caldwell also made the leap from Formula Regional to Formula 3, all of whom were able to reach the top step of the podium last season. Moreover, this year, Van Amersfoort Racing driver Pierre-Louis Chovet also had the opportunity to take part in two rounds of Formula 3, even managing to gain points at the weekend in Monza. For the German Sofia Flörsch, last year in Formula Regional again with Van Amersfoort Racing and this year starting in Formula 3, there was also the opportunity to take part in the 24h Le Mans with an all-female team. Finally, Juri Vips, protagonist of an excellent start to the season with KIC Motorsport, recently also made his debut in Formula 2, where he achieved third place in the sprint race right here in Mugello.

Joshua Dürksen (BWT Mücke Motorsport) managed both the start and the two restarts in Race 1 in the best possible way and won in his first race in the championship. The German managed to keep Gabriele Minì (Prema Powerteam) behind him at the start, but the race was interrupted as early as the first lap after 4 cars remained stationary in the middle of the track following a chain collision at the 3rd bend. At the first restart, Dürksen and Minì managed to stretch their lead, while, behind them, the battle for third place on the podium took place between Jonny Edgar (Van Amersfoort Racing) Jak Crawford (Van Amersfoort Racing) and Oliver Bearman (US Racing). The safety car was however called back onto the track a second time following a contact between Victor Bernier (R-Ace GP) and Pietro Delli Guanti (BVM Racing), which forced the Frenchman to withdraw. At the second restart, the leading positions did not change, with Minì successfully defending second place from Edgar and Dürksen distancing himself towards victory.

High emotions immediately on the first lap of race 2 with Jak Crawford (Van Amersfoort Racing), who started from the front row, twice attempting to attack poleman Gabriele Minì (Prema Powerteam), but without success. On the second lap, Jonny Edgar (Van Amersfoort Racing) also got going, and with his teammate Crawford closed in on Minì in a sandwich at the end of the straight of the 4th bend. Minì could do nothing but surrender his position to both of them and was also forced to let Oliver Bearman (US Racing) through as well. Edgar then attempted in vain to overtake the leader Crawford on the next lap, but left the door open for Bearman, who thus achieved second position. After a lap behind the safety car, Crawford successfully held off Bearman’s attacks and reached the finish line in first position, while Minì recovered and, on lap 13, took the third step of the podium ahead of Edgar.

Joshua Dürksen (BWT Mücke Motorsport), who started from the fifth grid, managed, over half of the race, to get rid of Oliver Bearman (US Racing), Jonny Edgar (Van Amersfoort Racing) and Jak Crawford (Van Amersfoort Racing) to move behind the race leader Gabriele Minì (Prema Powerteam), who started from pole position. Despite the effort made in his comeback, Dürksen was also able to put pressure on the Italian for the rest of the race, before having to settle for second position just slightly behind. On the third step of the podium it was Jak Crawford who preceded team mate Edgar and Bearman, the latter winning the battle for fifth position over Francesco Pizzi (Van Amersfoort Racing). Behind them were the two Prema Powerteam drivers, Sebastian Montoya and Dino Beganovic, advantaged by Pietr o Delli Guanti (BVM Racing) withdrawing with 5 laps to go following a contact with Jesse Salmenautio (Bhaitech).

Gianluca Petecof (Prema Powerteam) won the first race at the Red Bull Ring, where the safety car had to enter the track as early as the first lap. At the start, the Brazilian accelerated strongly from pole position and immediately distanced himself from teammate Arthur Leclerc, in turn followed by Oliver Rasmussen (Prema Powerteam) and Patrik Pasma (KIC Motorsport), but the race was interrupted following a contact between Jamie Chadwick (Prema Powerteam) and Konsta Lappalainen (KIC Motorsport) which cost both drivers a withdrawal. However, once again at the next restart, Petecof managed to get away easily while Rasmussen risked being caught up by Pasma and PierreLouis Chovet (Van Amersfoort Racing) because of a mistake made in the last bend of the fifth lap. In the end, the positions of the top five remain unchanged and Rasmussen managed to get on the podium behind Petecof, the winner with a lead of more than 3 seconds, and Leclerc.

It was Oliver Rasmussen (Prema Powerteam) overtaking that decided the outcome of race 2: in fact, the Dane successfully attacked team mate Gianluca Petecof, who started in pole position, as early as the first bend. From then on, Rasmussen stayed in the lead for the rest of the race, successfully resisting the constant pressure of the Brazilian, who in turn had to watch his back from Arthur Leclerc (Prema Powerteam). The driver from Monaco slightly improved his best lap several times together with Petecof, but was never able to launch a decisive attack. Rasmussen thus achieved his second championship victory ahead of Petecof and Leclerc on the podium, while Pierre-Louis Chovet (Van Amersfoort Racing) came fourth ahead of Patrik Pasma (KIC Motorsport). Rookie Alessandro Famularo (Van Amersfoort Racing) came sixth; he accumulated more than 15 seconds behind Pasma after a bad start, which saw him slide to tenth position, forcing him into a comeback race.

The battle for race 3 ignited as early as the first bends, but in the end it was Gianluca Petecof (Prema Powerteam) who won again: after having swung wide at the first bend, the Brazilian was in fact able to definitively pull ahead of his teammates Arthur Leclerc and Oliver Rasmussen, distancing himself at the third bend. However, the race was interrupted, applying the safety car system, the first time for two laps following a collision between Emidio Pesce (DR Formula RP Motorsport) and Nico Göhler (KIC Motorsport) at the bottom of the group. However, the restart, which saw no changes in the positions at the top, lasted only a few bends before the safety car was called back onto the track. Petecof kept his head even in the second restart and achieved his second victory of the weekend ahead of Leclerc and Rasmussen. Alessandro Famularo (Van Amersfoort Racing) got on the podium, followed by Jamie Chadwick (Prema Powerteam), Patrik Pasma (KIC Motorsport) and Pierre-Louis Chovet (Van Amersfoort Racing) in seventh position.
