EDITORIAL The big run-up to the 2017 European Championships starts in Sarno. A competition that promises to be exciting, divided into 5 events for the OK and OK-Junior, 4 for the KZ and 3 for the KZ2. There are, instead, 6 countries that will be affected by several events, for a “tour of Europe” that more than ever this year widens its horizons by involving nations with great racing traditions such as Sweden and Finland. These two events in the North of Europe will finish a programme that starts today in the South, on the “Circuito Internazionale Napoli”, which has long been one of the inevitable locations of the CIK-FIA races. The message is clear: great karting is ready to go and to unite Europe’s borders in the name of a common, great, passion. Let the challenge begin! Luca De Donno WSK Promotion President

CHAMPIONS
ALL CHAMPIONS, AND A FEW M As always, the European Championship sees getting on the track all the finest kart drivers. OK, OKJ and KZ line up right away, at Sarno, 19 European titles. Let us discover them all.
OK Queen of the single-speed classes, it is the main scenario where champions already with some experience, race with the young drivers arrived from previous classes. Not surprisingly, this is where three “defending champions” challenge each other: those of OK, OKJ and Academy Trophy.
CALLUM BRADSHAW
PEDRO HILTBRAND He is the European defending champion for the OK class, as well as World champion for the same category. Basically, he is what is defined as “the man to defeat”. Coming off an incredible 2016 season where he also conquered the International KZ2 Super Cup, the Spanish, this season, has left the CRG to wear the Tony Kart suit. At 20 years old, a confirmation at the top would mean to have found an absolute protagonist of international karting for many years to come.
FINLAY KENNEALLY A young British pilot who runs in the OK class while having obtained the OK-Junior European title, achieved in the past season. A title won to the wire, raising as the lead only at the last race of the season. Landed amongst “the best”, Kenneally is aware that for the next winning he will have to confront himself with the finest pilots of the single-speed karting. He too changed team in 2017, starting the season with Energy and then moving to Baby Race.
Winner of the Karting Academy Trophy, he has not raced much in OKJ to reach OK right away. The talent is there as well as the curiosity to see him at work in this category. FLAVIO CAMPONESCHI Two are the European titles in the winnings of the CRG pilot: that of 2008, in KF2, and that of 2015 in KZ. Could it be the good year for the third achievement in three different classes?
OKJ In a category in which the generational turnover is constant and physiological, there are no “defending champions” who take to the track. Among the many young pilots at their first experience in this category, let’s take a look at who remains amongst those who have been protagonists also in the 2016 OKJ.
04
MORE, ON THE TRACK KZ The main class for the shifter-kart is, for several years, that in which pilots with the most experience in karting, challenge each other. At the start of the 2017 Championship, the protagonists featured in Sarno can count, overall, a total of 15 European titles.
MARCO ARDIGÒ Once again the Italian driver of the Tony Kart presents himself at the European start line as holder of the title. It’s the fifth time this happens, even though the first one in the KZ class, where Ardigò conquered his first European title in 2016. Previously, the titles were accomplished all in the singlespeed classes, with four consecutive victories, from 2005 to 2008, between Formula A and KF1. Needless to say, that, despite the fierce competition, Ardigò is always on the top of the favorite’s list.
GILLIAN HENRION French of the CRG, he is the pilot who best positioned himself in the 2016 European Championship among those left in the OKJ: 21st with 33 points.
PAOLO DE CONTO Two European titles for the Italian of CRG: 2010 in KZ2 and 2011 in KZ, class of which is the World reigning champion.
BAS LAMMERS The Dutchman of Sodi Kart is the pilot on the track with the most European titles after Ardigò. His achievements in 2003 in Formula A and in 2009 and 2010 in KZ1.
DAVIDE FORÈ Veteran of karting, he boasts 4 World Championships in a winning list that has few equals in the history of this sport. Yet, he won “only” one European in Formula A in 1994.
JORRIT PEX For a few years, he has been amongst the undiscussed protagonists of the shifterkart, he won the KZ1 European Championship in 2012 and the KZ World Championship in 2015.
RICK DREEZEN Belgian, of the 1990 class, he won the European title KZ in 2014. His great experience put him amongst the title contenders.
ANDREA DALÈ Almost 30 years old, the Italian pilot is amongst those who can boast a European title in their career: in KZ2 in 2014.
ILYA MOROZOV Also the Russian pilot of the Ward Racing is a “veteran” of the OKJ. In 2016, he ended the European at the 23rd place with 30 points. This year the goal is to win.
BEN HANLEY Amongst the drivers with the absolute most experience, the British won the European title in KF in 2015. Now he is aiming at the second in the shifter-kart class.
LEONARDO MARSEGLIA 30th in 2016, the pilot of the Chiesa Corse has been among the protagonists at the beginning of the season. Definitely in the race for the OKJ 2017 European title, he will be there too.

NEWS
OK E OKJ ARE BOOMING In total, the drivers of two the single-speed kart classes present in the entry list in Sarno are 153, an increase of 27,5% compared to the 120 of a year ago. CIK-FIA and WSK Promotion are working together to increase the number of entrants. As stated by Kees Van De Grint, the VicePresident of CIK-FIA: “It is important for manufacturers that KZ continues to exist. This is the area reserved for professional Drivers who actively contribute to the indispensable development of the equipment. We need to discuss the future of this cutting-edge category with all parties involved in order to find viable solutions together”.
Appeared in 2016 to substitute the KF e KFJ, at their second European Championship the new classes OK e OKJ demonstrate to be in excellent shape. While the OK-Junior already last year was fully booked, the one to have significantly improved is the OK, which doubles the number of enrollments: from 38 in Zuera, in the first 2016 European round, to 77 in Sarno, the first 2017 European round. Surely, the lowering of one year in the age limit to access the international categories of directdrive karts has played an important role, but as a whole, the message is very positive and it indicates that the choices of the Federation are going in the right direction.

Next appointment in Genk will see on the track, beyond the KZ class, also the KZ2 and Academy classes. For the latter, in particular, it is important to note a change in the calendar compared to what was communicated at the beginning of the season. Due to exceptional circumstances, in fact, the championship round forecasted in Wackersdorf on September 10th in conjunction with the World KZ Championship and the International KZ2 Super Cup, will take place on July 2nd on the circuit of Le mans (France). REGULATIONS THE CHAMPIONSHIP: PRINCIPLE AND RUNNING The Championship is run over five (OK and OK-Junior) or four (KZ) Competitions. The Competitions counting towards the Championship («the Competitions») will have the status of full international Competitions. Each Competition will comprise a final phase named «Final» in accordance with the number of participants in the Competition. The distance of the Final, from the starting signal to the chequered flag, will be equal to the minimum number of full laps necessary for reaching the respective distances of 30 km (OK and KZ) or 25 km (OK-Junior). The chequered flag will be shown to the leading kart when it crosses the finishing line («the Line») at the end of the lap during which that distance is reached. The Line consists in a single line across the track.
CLASSIFICATION The classification will be established as follows: 80% of the results rounded up or down to the nearest figure will count. The worst result obtained in the intermediate classifications (established after the Qualifying Heats) and the worst result obtained in the Finals will be discounted. A blank result due to a disqualification may not be discounted. The title of the CIK-FIA Championship will be awarded to the Driver who has scored the greatest number of points.
ELIGIBLE KARTS & EQUIPMENT The Championship is reserved for OK karts, OK-Junior kart and KZ1 karts as defined in the Technical Regulations. At Scrutineering, each Driver is entitled to submit: 2 chassis of the same make, 2 engines of the same make. The karts must be presented in full configuration (assembled chassis + bodywork + extra components) with the engines. As from Free Practice, each Driver may have the following equipment: 2 chassis and 2 engines, those marked at Scrutineering.
POINT SYSTEM
The “hot” phases worth points towards the Championship title are the HEATS and the FINAL. Points will be assigned to the TOP 10 of the combined Intermediate Standings (established after the Heats) and the TOP 15 of the Final.

TIRES FOCUS SUSPENDING & RESUMING A RACE In case of any dangerous conditions, such as an accident blocking the way, the Track Clerk/Race Director may decide to stop the race, by showing the red flag on the Finish Line and at Marshals’ posts. If the race is a Practice: all karts must reduce speed and return to the Service Park. If the race is a Heat, a Prefinal, or a Final: all karts must slow down and will be directed either to the Service Park entrance, or asked to stop on track. If the race is suspended definitely, the classification of the Race will be the classification at the end of the lap prior to that during which the signal to stop the Race was given. If the race is to resume, Drivers will be warned at least 10 minutes in advance. The race will re-start in “slow” mode (signalled by the yellow flag). The length of the new race will be equal to the difference between the scheduled number of laps and the number of laps covered. The Drivers who have crossed the Finish Line at the end of the lap prior to that on which the race was stopped will be allowed to take the new start.
