EDITORIAL The 2016 international CIK-FIA karting season has been breathtaking season. It began in April, hasn’t stopped for a moment and finishes at the start of this “Olympic” summer. While karting doesn’t have the pleasure of being awarded an Olympic medal, that doesn’t mean that here, in Sweden, thousands of kilometres from Rio, there isn’t the same anxious waiting that characterises all those races in which victory represents the pinnacle of a career. Indeed, at the end of the weekend in Kristianstad, after the last lap around the beautiful Swedish track has been completed, shifter karting will have a new world champion in the KZ class and a new International Super Cup winner in the KZ2 class. Their celebrations will be joined by one of the most promising young talents, capable of beating the fierce competition of the many, excited, participants in the Karting Academy Trophy. Even Baron de Coubertin would have been proud of our wonderful sport. Luca De Donno

THE NORTHERN ROUTE The single event that awards the KZ and KZ2 driver’s championship titles and hosts the third round of the 2016 Academy Trophy is the race furthest north in the 2016 CIK-FIA calendar: in Sweden.
4 SEPTEMBER
CIK-FIA WORLD KZ CHAMPIONSHIP, INTERNATIONAL KZ2 SUPER CUP KARTING ACADEMY TROPHY - Rd 3 KRISTIANSTAD, SWEDEN Asum Ring
The Swedish Kristianstad circuit has only been on the CIK-FIA’s “radar” since 2014. However, over the last three years it has already hosted the final round of the KZ and KZ2 European Championships in 2014 and the final round of the KF and KFJ European Championships in 2015. This year, the Asum Ring reaches the top and dresses up for the most important event of the shifter karting season: the one that awards the KZ world title and the KZ2 International Super Cup. With its 1231 metres, the Swedish track is one of the shortest in the circus, but it has a very intriguing design that requires excellent levels of speed and doesn’t forgive even the slightest of errors. The services around the track, the facilities and, in general, the atmosphere that is always found at the dazzling latitudes of northern Europe are all excellent. TRACK CHARACTERISTICS

STATISTICS
FIGURE IT OUT 33 drivers for the KZ class and 89 for the KZ2 class. In addition, there are 51 names on the entry list of the Academy Trophy, for a total of 173 appearances in the World Championship weekend in Kristianstad. In total, including the young Academy drivers, there are representatives from 44 countries, from all five
KZ
continents. All the major manufacturers are also represented with regard to the chassis and engine brands (relative to the KZ and KZ2 classes, since the same Exprit - Vortex equipment is used for everyone as far as the Academy is concerned), as befits a weekend that assigns world championship gear kart titles.

CHAMPIONS
ARDIGÒ’S “FIFTH” The Tony Kart driver reached the final of the last European Championship round held in Genk and won the continental title in the highest gear karts category. For Ardigò it was the fifth European title in a great karting career.
MARCO ARDIGÒ
2016 KZ European Champion There was certainly no need for an additional championship win to state that Marco Ardigò, born in 1983, from Italy, is one of the best kart drivers in the history of the sport; however... with the European champions crown for the 2016 season in the KZ class, this statement can be underlined with even greater emphasis. In fact, in Genk, the Tony Kart standard bearer put his seal on a European championship where he was always one of the front runners, starting from the first round in Essay. But this does not mean that it was an easy win, because until the last minute the final result was open, because of the determination of Sodi’s drivers, as well as Hajek and Puhakka, just to mention the main opponents, who gave no respite to Ardigò until the last finish line, requiring him to win the final in Genk to put his final mark on the championship. With this win, five European championships have now been won by Marco Ardigò. The first was in the main gear class of karting after four consecutive wins in Formula A and KF1 classes, won between 2005 and 2008. Taking into account the world titles that Ardigò has won with both single speed and gear karts, the trophy case of the Italian champion is truly one of the most comprehensive in the history of karting.
06
FEDERER BY A WHISKER The second European championship win in the Federer’s career. In Genk he had to wait while the points he had earned and the worst performance deductions were calculated before raising his arms to the sky. As always, the KZ2 delivered excitement until the last breath.
FABIAN FEDERER
2016 KZ2 European Champion Once again, the KZ2 class gave us a rich season of emotions and elected its champion only once the points earned and the worst performance deductions were calculated. In the end it was the Italian Fabian Federer who won, thus repeating his continental success in 2011. However, as we said, before celebrating his victory the driver born in Bolzano in 1989 had to wait until the last minute: arriving in Genk as the leader in the rankings, Federer excelled in the qualifying heats, finishing in third place and earning the 8 points that proved to be decisive for the title. In fact, in the pre-final the SPR Racing Team driver had a spark-plug problem that forced him to abandon the race and not to be able to defend his chances of winning on the track, in the final. The track results, however, and above all the performance deductions, brought a smile to the face of Fabian, who, thanks to the excellent performance in the first two rounds, could afford to achieve zero points in Genk in both the pre-final (where he earned 2 points, which were however deducted, being the worst result), and Final, in any case winning the championship. Behind him in the rankings came Pex and Viganò, with a difference of just 10 lengths, highlighting the great struggle that characterised the 2016 KZ2 class European Championship.

REPORT ACADEMY - PORTIMAO
HANDSAEME’S VICTORY DELAYS BRADSHAW’S CROWNING
47 Academicians were present at Portimao for the second race of Academy Trophy. Most of them were new to such hot condition. The Belgian Xavier Handsaeme was at the front as soon Qualifying Practice started and he continued his momentum in the Qualifying Heats. But the return of the Briton Callum Bradshaw was confirmed with his victory in the Prefinal, with the Spaniard Rubén Saura Sabater taking 3rd place behind Handsaeme. Kasparas Vaskelis (LTU) sprang ahead in the Final while Bradshaw was relegated to 7th and Handsaeme returned to the lead from 4th position. The suspense was reinforced by the announcement of an investigation concerning the
10
Belgian’s start. The leader before halfway, Handsaeme simultaneously risked a penalty of three seconds, while being wary of the return of Bradshaw. He was in a brilliant 2nd position with three laps to go, but Handsaeme continued to widen the gap to cross the finish line 3.2 seconds ahead. He therefore maintained his victory despite the penalty, so Bradshaw climbed on the second step of the podium and Vaskelis on the third. Although Bradshaw remains well ahead in the standings, the Trophy is not yet fully his. Handsaeme is now neck and neck at the front with Hansen, Clarke and Nilsson, all launched in pursuit of the leader.
