Awarding a trophy for a single race or a multi-round competition? A question that is not easy to answer. There are those who argue that karting must be synonymous with constancy and continuity and, for this reason, numerous rounds should be required to award a trophy. On the other hand, however, there are also those who think that the thrill and unpredictability of a single racing weekend is the top in terms of emotion. Precisely because of this dual point of view, since its inception the WSK has made alternating its trademark. The schedule for the 2018 season confirms this: four Trophies to be won, two in single races, two in more than one race. And if the bad weather arrives, to mess up the programme as happened at Lonato, well, no problem... Muro Leccese and Sarno, in Southern Italy, offer to provide additional entertainment and the possibility to recover races and points lost that were “postponed due to snow”. Because WSK like thrills and unpredictability, as much as constancy and continuity. They like everything, in short. Or, to put it in a nutshell: they like karting. And it shows. Assegnare un trofeo con gara singola o con una competizione su più round? Una domanda a cui non è per nulla facile dare risposta. C’è il partito di chi sostiene che il karting debba essere sinonimo di costanza e continuità e, per questa ragione, per l’assegnazione di un titolo, predilige un calendario ricco di prove. Dall’altra parte, però, c’è anche chi pensa che il brivido e l’imprevedibilità di un unico weekend di gara siano il top dell’emozione. Proprio per questo doppio punto di vista, la WSK, sin dai suoi albori, ha fatto dell’alternanza il proprio marchio di fabbrica. Il calendario della stagione 2018 lo conferma: quattro i Trofei in palio, due in gara singola, due no. E se arriva il maltempo, come successo a Lonato, a scompaginare i piani... poco male. Le piste di Muro Leccese e Sarno, nel sud Italia, promettono tanto spettacolo e spazio per recuperare gare e punteggi “rinviati per neve”. Perché dalle parti della WSK, quello che piace è il brivido e l’imprevedibilità, tanto quanto la costanza e la continuità. Piace tutto, insomma. O, per dirla senza troppi giri di parole: piace il karting. E si vede.

SNOW BREAK

In over 13 years of history the WSK had never had to cancel a race, for any reason. This time, however, the heavy snow that had fallen on Lonato, as it had, to various degrees, over much of Europe, had the last word and made it impossible to kick off Round 2 of the 2018 WSK Super Master Series. The weather forecast had alerted all concerned to potential problems, and the WSK took every possible precaution, hoping that, as predicted, things might improve on Saturday and Sunday. Unfortunately, the conditions didn’t change and, being unable to guarantee the necessary safety, the WSK was forced to cancel the race.

In oltre 13 anni di storia non era mai accaduto che la WSK avesse dovuto annullare una gara, per qualsiasi motivo. Questa volta, invece, la neve caduta copiosa su Lonato come, in tempi e modi diversi, in gran parte dell’Europa, ha avuto la meglio e reso impossibile dare il via al Round 2 della WSK Super Master Series 2018. Le previsioni avevano allertato sui possibili disagi, e la WSK aveva preso tutte le precauzioni del caso, confidando nella possibilità che veniva lasciata aperta di un miglioramento nelle giornate di sabato e domenica. Purtroppo, invece, le condizioni non sono cambiate e, non potendo garantire la necessaria sicurezza, WSK è stata costretta ad annullare la gara.

Organizers, operators and personnel at the South Garda Karting track worked incessantly to do what they could, and to them go our most sincere thanks. We ought to thank the drivers as well, who waited stoically for two days at Lonato, hoping for an improvement that didn’t end up coming. So we’ll see everyone again not only for the round at Muro Leccese, regularly scheduled for March 17-18, but also for the weekend of 1 April, when the cancelled round will be made up at Sarno, for which the registrations already sent in for the Lonato weekend will still be considered valid. Two dates so close together promise to make the 2018 Super Master Series even more unpredictable and intriguing, and we’re ready for a spring full of events and enthusiasm.

Organizzatori, operatori e addetti della pista South Garda Karting hanno lavorato incessantemente cercando di fare il possibile, e a loro va il sentito ringraziamento di tutti. Così come va ai piloti che, stoicamente, sono rimasti per due giornate a Lonato sperando in un miglioramento che, alla fine, non è arrivato. Per tutti, l’appuntamento è rinnovato non solo per la gara di Muro Leccese, regolarmente in programma per il 17 - 18 marzo, ma anche per il weekend dell’1 aprile, quando, a Sarno, è previsto il recupero della gara, per la quale saranno considerate valide le iscrizioni già pervenute per l’evento di Lonato. Il doppio appuntamento ravvicinato rende ancora più incerta e interessante la Super Master Series 2018, che si appresta a vivere una primavera ricchissima di appuntamenti e di entusiasmo.

INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT NAPOLI - SARNO SEE YOU IN SARNO - It thus falls to the Naples International Circuit in Sarno to host the two decisive races that will assign the 2018 WSK Super Master Series titles. The 1547-metre track, whose third section was refurbished less than two years ago, is characterised by a long straightaway of 315 metres, making it possible to reach very high speeds. APPUNTAMENTO A SARNO - Sarà, quindi, il Circuito Internazionale Napoli di Sarno a ospitare, in sequenza, le due gare decisive per l’assegnazione dei titoli della WSK Super Master Series 2018. Il tracciato di 1547 metri, rinnovato nel terzo settore meno di due anni fa, è caratterizzato dal lunghissimo rettilineo di 315 metri che permette di raggiungere velocità molto elevate.

POINT ASSIGNMENT SYSTEM La tappa “di recupero” programmata per l’1 aprile a Sarno, manterrà le caratteristiche della seconda prova stagionale, in termini di punteggi da assegnare. La scala incrementale, quindi, resterà quella prevista per la gara di Lonato, che assegna ai vincitori di ciascuna categoria 11 punti nella classifica di manche, 40 punti in Prefinale e 60 punti in Finale. Di conseguenza, restano invariati i punteggi previsti per la terza tappa di Muro Leccese e per l’ultimo appuntamento, sempre a Sarno, che mette in palio il maggior numero di punti.

The “make-up” race scheduled for April 1 at Sarno will maintain the characteristics of the season’s second round in terms of points awarded. The incremental scale, therefore, will remain the one planned for the Lonato race, giving the winners in each category 11 points in the round standings, 40 points in the Pre-Final, and 60 points in the Final. It was Daniel Vasile who won in the gear class, proving to be the most skilful at the start of the most important race. In fact, in the final, the Romanian driver started in the second row, but after the green light he did well to find his space and reached second position. Just enough to have the leader of the race (earned by the French Tom Leuillet) in his sights, and then came the decisive overtaking. From then on it was “only” a question of managing and defending against attacks: a concept that seems easy to say, but which is a bit more complicated to put in practice when you are on a track with the first trophy of the season at stake. However, in the end it was the DR driver who won more than 4 seconds in front.

Nella classe con il cambio vince Daniel Vasile, dimostratosi il più abile in partenza nella gara che conta. In finale, infatti, il pilota romeno parte in seconda fila, ma allo scattare del verde è bravissimo a trovare uno spazio e piazzarsi in seconda posizione. Giusto il tempo necessario per prendere le misure sulla testa della corsa (guadagnata dal francese Tom Leuillet), ed ecco arrivare il sorpasso decisivo. Da quel momento in poi si è trattato “solo” di amministrare e difendersi dagli attacchi: un concetto che sembra facilissimo da raccontare, ma che è un po’ più complicato da mettere in atto quando ci si trova in pista a giocarsi il primo trofeo della stagione, alla fine, comunque, conquistato dal pilota DR con oltre 4 secondi di vantaggio.

Nicklas Nielsen was probably one of the most experienced drivers on the track, and his “significant” past experience certainly helped to finish first in front of the Italian Lorenzo Ferrari and the driver from Barbados Zane Maloney in the finale. Nielsen immediately made it clear straight away that he was the fastest. In fact, in the preliminary rounds, he held a pace that other competitors could hardly follow. His only uncertain moment was in the pre-final, where for three laps he found himself having to chase others. But he then won the race and, in the final, regained the first position immediately after the start, with the Danish member of the KSM Schumacher Racing Team staying in the lead throughout, getting what he has shown he deserves. Nicklas Nielsen era probabilmente uno dei piloti più esperti in pista, e il suo passato “importante” ha di certo contribuito a fargli tagliare il traguardo della finale per primo davanti all’italiano Lorenzo Ferrari e al pilota proveniente dalle Barbados Zane Maloney. Nielsen ha fatto capire sin da subito di essere il più veloce. Nelle eliminatorie, infatti, ha avuto un passo che difficilmente altri concorrenti sono riusciti a seguire. Unico momento incerto è stato nella prefinale, dove per tre giri si è trovato a dover inseguire. Ma ha comunque poi vinto la gara e, in finale, riconquistata la prima posizione subito dopo il via, il danese del KSM Schumacher Racing Team è rimasto sempre in testa, ottenendo quello che ha dimostrato di meritare.

The new WSK international karting season began and it was immediately emotional. At the Adria Karting Raceway, the circuit that hosted the Champions Cup race week-end, the drivers of the four classes ventured into a scintillating sporting battle.

Comincia la nuova stagione di karting internazionale marchiata WSK ed è subito emozione. All’Adria Karting Raceway, circuito che ha ospitato il week end di gara della Champions Cup, i piloti delle quattro categorie si sono cimentati in una spumeggiante battaglia sportiva.

In the Junior class, at the start of the final the driver with a slight advantage seemed to be Gabriele Minì. In fact, the Italian had come in first in the pre-final, with a good speed. Behind him were Harry Thampson and Paul Aron, respectively second and third. In the final, however, there was a reversal at the front: Minì remained decidedly behind and the two challengers became the protagonists. At the end of the race it was the Estonian Paul Aron who crossed the finish line first. The Ricky Flynn Motorsport racing team demonstrated, once again, that it is one of the strongest teams in the class and, above all, a great environment to grow talent. In fact, the first two winners of the WSK Champions Cup 2018 are part of it.

Nella classe Junior, al via della finale il pilota in leggero vantaggio pareva essere Gabriele Minì. L’italiano, infatti, aveva conquistato la prima piazza in prefinale dimostrando una buona velocità. Alle sue spalle Harry Thampson e Paul Aron, rispettivamente secondo e terzo. In finale, però, ecco il ribaltamento di fronte: Minì rimane decisamente arretrato e i due concorrenti da sfidanti diventano protagonisti. Alla fine della lotta è l’estone Paul Aron a tagliare il traguardo per primo. Il racing team Ricky Flynn Motorsport dimostra, ancora una volta, di essere una delle realtà più forti della categoria e, soprattutto, un ottimo ambiente dove far crescere il talento. I primi due classificati della WSK Champions Cup 2018, infatti, ne fanno parte.

Andrea Antonelli won in the crowded 60 Mini. And when there are almost a hundred competitors, excelling is never an easy task, especially in a rather unpredictable weekend like the Champions Cup. The final confirmed this trend, with the two drivers Stenshorne and Antonelli (as well as, for one lap, the Polish driver Karol Pasiewicz) leading the race. Overtaking was very frequent and until the end it was impossible to predict who would cross the finish line first. The winning flicker came from the Italian driver, who proved to be more courageous and unscrupulous, hence getting the best of a group of four drivers to arrive at the finish line with less than a second between them. Nell’affollatissima 60 Mini ha vinto Andrea Antonelli. E quando gli iscritti sono quasi un centinaio, primeggiare non è mai un’impresa facile, specie in un weekend piuttosto imprevedibile come quello della Champions Cup. La finale ha confermato questo andamento, con i due piloti Stenshorne e Antonelli (oltre, per un giro, al polacco Karol Pasiewicz) a condurre la gara. I sorpassi sono stati frequentissimi e fino alla fine pronosticare chi potesse tagliare il traguardo per primo era impossibile. Il guizzo vincente è arrivato dal pilota italiano, che si è dimostrato più coraggioso e spregiudicato, riuscendo, così, ad avere la meglio in un gruppetto di quattro piloti arrivati al traguardo racchiusi in meno di un secondo.

An Italian in first place in the KZ2. In fact, Alex Irlando (Sodi Kart/TM) was the winner, who did well to constantly improve over the whole weekend. In the final he was in front of his compatriot Leonardo Lorandi (Tony Kart/ TM) and Frenchman Adrien Renaudin (Sodi Kart/TM). Leadership of the race, we should point out, was never in question. In fact, Irlando did not make any mistakes and, having gotten into the lead right away, he remained determined and focused to make the race his own. Behind him it can be said that there was almost another race, which certainly had a victim: Anthony Abbasse (Sodi/TM). The racing team mate of the winner, who came first in the pre-final, fought to snatch at least a place on one of the podiums. An ambition, however, that remained just that, finishing in seventh place also because of a penalty. Worthy of note that the second placed driver, Lorandi, was at the WSK Super Master Series “on loan”: in fact, the Italian driver will focus his season on the Formula 4 championship, starting in April.

In KZ2 il primo posto parla italiano. A vincere è, infatti, Alex Irlando (Sodi Kart/TM), bravo nel crescere per tutta la durata del week end e, in finale, a mettere dietro il connazionale Leonardo Lorandi (Tony Kart/TM) e il francese Adrien Renaudin (Sodi Kart/TM). La testa della corsa, è bene precisare, non è mai stata in discussione. Irlando, infatti, non commette errori e, conquistata la leadership fin da subito, rimane deciso e concentrato nel fare sua la gara. Dietro si può dire ci sia quasi un’altra gara, che fa sicuramente una vittima: Anthony Abbasse (Sodi/TM). Il compagno di racing team del vincitore, arrivato primo in prefinale, lotta per strappare almeno un podio. Ambizione che però rimane tale, visto che anche per via di una penalità finisce settimo. Da segnalare che il secondo classificato, Lorandi, è alla WSK Super Master Series in “prestito”: il pilota italiano, infatti, incentrerà la sua stagione sul campionato di Formula 4, in partenza ad aprile.

In the top class of single-speed karting the race was quite lively and dynamic, with several comebacks and a final one that entertained the audience. The rounds saw David Vidales (Tony Kart/Vortex) as the protagonist. However, after the second place in his pre-final, the Spaniard lost ground in the final, losing the possibility of getting among the winners: he finished fourth. Hannes Janker (KR/Parilla) was the winner: the German driver quickly took the lead in the race in front of Lorenzo Travisanutto (KR/Parilla), with a decisive overtaking about half way through the race. But the result remained uncertain until the last and at the finishing line, Janker, Travisanutto and third place Nicklas Nielsen (Tony Kart/Vortex) all arrived within a second of each other. In fourth place, as we mentioned, was Vidales, who still won important points for the championship: three races from the end, and with points up for grabs “to rise in the rankings”, everything is still very open.

Nella massima categoria del karting monomarcia la gara è piuttosto vivace e dinamica, con parecchie rimonte e una finale accesa che ha fatto divertire anche il pubblico. Nelle manche a recitare il ruolo del protagonista è David Vidales (Tony Kart/Vortex). Lo spagnolo però, dopo il secondo posto nella sua prefinale, in finale perde qualcosa vedendo allontanarsi anche la possibilità del podio: finisce quarto. A vincere è Hannes Janker (KR/Parilla): il pilota tedesco è lesto a conquistare la testa della corsa ai danni di Lorenzo Travisanutto (KR/Parilla), con il sorpasso decisivo arrivato più o meno a metà gara. Ma il risultato rimane incerto fino all’ultimo e sul traguardo Janker, Travisanutto e il terzo classificato, Nicklas Nielsen (Tony Kart/Vortex), arrivano tutti racchiusi in un secondo. A great finale in the OKJ, which saw the Russian Kirill Smal (Tony Kart/Vortex) dual with the Italian Gabriele Minì (Parolin/Parilla) and the Englishman Taylor Barnard (KR/ Parilla). Victory was uncertain until right at the end, and it was Smal who found the winning sprint, overtaking in the decisive stages of the race and finishing in front of Barnard, who was subsequently penalized, and Minì. Paul Aron was right behind in third place (FA Kart/Vortex). The Estonian driver deserves special praise, because, in addition to his placement, he was the protagonist of an important comeback starting from seventh position. Overall, even in the OKJ there were many competitors, with 82 drivers at the start. A remarkable fact was also the touch of internationality, with as many as 23 countries present. Worthy of note is the great display, in the rounds, of Dario Isidoro Vezzaro (Tony Kart/LKE), first in qualifying and in all 4 races, subsequently delayed, in the pre-final, also due to a 13 seconds penalty.

Gran bella finale nella categoria OKJ, che vede duellare il russo Kirill Smal (Tony Kart/Vortex), l’italiano Gabriele Minì (Parolin/Parilla) e l’inglese Taylor Barnard (KR/Parilla). Fino all’ultimo la vittoria è in bilico, a trovare lo sprint vincente è Smal, che realizza un bel sorpasso nelle fasi decisive della gara e chiude davanti a Barnard, poi penalizzato, e Minì. Terzo di un soffio è Paul Aron (FA Kart/Vortex). Il pilota estone merita un plauso particolare, perché, oltre al piazzamento, è protagonista di un’importante rimonta partendo dalla settima posizione. Nel complesso anche in OKJ il numero degli iscritti è importante, con 82 piloti al via. Notevole anche il tocco di internazionalità, con ben 23 paesi presenti. Da segnalare la grande prova, nelle manche, di [ OKJ ] RANKING Dario Isidoro Vezzaro P. As tradition would have it, the Mini is the most crowded class among the four running on the track in the first round of the WSK Super Master Series. In fact, there were almost ninety registered drivers at the start in Adria. It was Martinius Stenshorne (Parolin/TM) who dominated, and even though the young Norwegian did not start on the right foot, mainly because he ended a round before the chequered flag. In the pre-final, however, he found his rhythm, came back from 7th position, wining and earning pole position ahead of the winner of Prefinal A, Francesco Pulito (IPKarting/TM). It was the prelude to success: in fact, in the final, the Scandinavian dominated without risking losing control. The place of honour went to Polish driver Tymoteusz Kucharczyk (Parolin/TM), just over 2 seconds behind, but the protagonist of an exciting comeback with 8 positions recovered. Brando Badoer (Parolin/TM) was the last one on the podium, a young son following family tradition: his father, Luca Badoer, was an F1 driver for Ferrari and Minardi.

Come tradizione vuole, la Mini è la categoria più affollata tra le quattro scese in pista nel primo round della WSK Super Master Series. Sono quasi novanta, infatti, gli iscritti all’esordio di Adria. A dominare è Martinius Stenshorne (Parolin/TM), anche se il giovane norvegese non parte proprio con il piede giusto, soprattutto a causa di una manche terminata, per lui, prima della bandiera a scacchi. In prefinale però, trova il ritmo, rimonta 7 posizioni, vince e guadagna la pole position davanti al vincitore della Prefinale A, Francesco Pulito (IPKarting/TM). È il preludio del successo: in finale, infatti, lo scandinavo domina senza rischiare mai di perdere il comando. La piazza d’onore è del pilota polacco Tymoteusz Kucharczyk (Parolin/TM), lontano oltre 2 secondi, ma autore di una [ 60 MINI ] RANKING rimonta entusiasmante P.
