Every year, there is the same feeling: no time seems to have passed since the last few races decreed the end of the previous season, and yet... here we are again, out on the track (at Adria, to be precise), with an irrepressible desire to start racing. To start competing. To start celebrating and cursing. To start staying awake at night to make sure that even the smallest detail is in order so that it will be a weekend to remember. As has been the case for the past 12 years. With the desire and the adrenaline that seem to increase a little more at each new beginning! Welcome everyone to WSK Promotion’s 2017 karting season!
Ogni anno la sensazione si ripete: sembra passato pochissimo tempo da quanto le ultime gare hanno decretato la fine della scorsa stagione, eppure... siamo di nuovo qui, in pista (ad Adria, per la precisione), con una voglia pazzesca di ricominciare a correre. Ricominciare a gareggiare. Ricominciare a gioire e imprecare. Ricominciare a stare svegli la notte per verificare che anche il più piccolo dettaglio sia a posto per vivere un weekend da ricordare. Now in its fourth edition, the WSK Champions Cup will once again in the racing season. After the first two years at La Conca (featuring two events), a single event has been confirmed for 2017 at last year’s venue: the Adria Karting Raceway. Giunta alla quarta edizione, è ancora la WSK Champions Cup a inaugurare la stagione delle gare. Dopo i primi due anni a La Conca (su doppio appuntamento), per il 2017 è confermata la prova unica nella sede della scorsa edizione: Adria Karting Raceway. Eighth season for the series that, more than any other, represents the “trademark” of WSK promotion. The first of four events that will take two months to award the championship titles will be held at Adria, the weekend immediately following the Champions Cup. After which the competition will move on to Castelletto di Branduzzo, Muro Leccese and Sarno, in that order. Ottava stagione per la serie che, ormai, più di tutte, è il “marchio di fabbrica” di WSK Promotion. Il primo dei 4 appuntamenti che nell’arco di due mesi assegneranno i titoli di campione si terrà ad Adria, nel weekend subito successivo alla Champions Cup. Quindi, nell’ordine, ci si sposterà a Castelletto di Branduzzo, Muro Leccese e Sarno.

A YEAR OF WSK Following well-established tradition, the 2017 season by WSK Promotion confirms all the events that have marked international karting in recent years: from the Champions Cup to the Master Series and Final Cup; from the CIK-FIA World Championships to the multi-round European Championships. As for the single-seaters, the fourth edition of the Italian F.4 Championship Powered by Abarth is set to start. Come da tradizione, la stagione 2017 by WSK Promotion conferma tutti gli appuntamenti che hanno segnato gli anni recenti del karting internazionale: da Champions Cup, Master Series e Final Cup a Mondiali e campionati europei CIK-FIA. E per le monoposto, è pronta a prendere il via la quarta edizione dell’Italian F.4 Championship Powered by Abarth.

Ten months after the “start”, WSK Promotion is back at Adria for the double event of the Final Cup. Now in its seventh edition (the fourth at Adria, after the debut at Ortona and the two years at Castelletto di Branduzzo), the series will be held over two consecutive weekends and, as always, it will be the last chance for all the drivers to make their mark on the international karting season. Dieci mesi dopo il “via”, si torna ad Adria per il doppio appuntamento della Final Cup. Arrivata alla settima edizione (la quarta che si disputa ad Adria, dopo l’esordio di Ortona e i due anni a Castelletto di Branduzzo), la serie si terrà nell’arco di due weekend consecutivi e, come sempre, per tutti i piloti sarà l’ultima occasione di lasciare il segno nella stagione del grande karting internazionale.
The European titles are the main event of the new season of CIK-FIA races organised by WSK Promotion. The “busiest” classes will be OK and OK-Junior, whose schedule includes 5 rounds. The KZ class will have 4 rounds (one more than last year) and the KZ2 will have three rounds, as it did in 2016. Confirmed also the CIK-FIA Karting Academy Trophy: 3 round in Genk, Alahärmä and Wackersdorf. Also confirmed, as if there was any doubt whatsoever, is a fourth season of the Italian F.4 Championship powered by Abarth, more than ever the established preferential competition for any former kart drivers wishing to pursue a career in motorsport. ALL THE WSK DRIVERS THAT HAVE MADE IT TO F1 In October-November 2010, he lifted the trophy as the winner of the KF2 class in what was the first edition of the WSK Master Series. Six years later, he’s on the front pages of all the sports papers, officially announced as Scuderia Ferrari’s third driver for the 2017 season. The man in question is Antonio Giovinazzi, a talent from Italy who took his first steps in karting and in WSK (in 2008 he was already competing in the KF3 International Series), and is now ready to sit on one of the most coveted seats in the world. However, Giovinazzi will not be the only driver with a past in WSK to be in F1 in 2017. We’ve already discussed Verstappen, who won an impressive seven WSK. The same can be said for Valtteri Bottas, the new Mercedes official driver, winner of the first ever WSK series: the Formula A 2006 International Series. Another “former WSK” driver entering the top motorsport series in 2017 is, as is widely known, Lance Stroll, the new Williams driver. Among other things, in the past he managed fifth place in the

KF class 2013 WSK Super Master Series. Esteban Ocon, the French driver who took part in WSK races from 2009 to 2011, managing a second place in the KF3 class 2011 Euro Series, will be a regular fixture at Force India. Stoffel Vandoorne, promoted to McLaren works driver, also has a past in WSK, having competed in the KF2 class in the 2009 WSK International Series. The same year in which Daniil Kvyat almost managed to triumph in the KF3 class, finishing second overall ahead of Carlos Sainz Jr. Nowadays, they are teammates in Toro Rosso. Lastly, Marcus Ericsson is also worthy of a mention: in 2012, when he was already competing in GP2, the Sauber F1 driver took part in the KZ2 class WSK Finals Cup (finishing 18th).

Nel 2010 alzava il trofeo del vincitore nella classe KF2 della WSK Master Series. A sei anni di distanza, è sulle prime pagine di tutti i giornali sportivi, annunciato ufficialmente come terzo pilota della Scuderia Ferrari. Parliamo di Antonio Giovinazzi, talento italiano arrivato alla Scuderia Ferrari, che nel karting, e nella WSK (già nel 2008 correva l’International Series in KF3), ha mosso i suoi primi passi. Ma non sarà lui l’unico pilota con un passato in WSK a essere presente in F1 nel 2017. Di Verstappen, che di titoli WSK ne ha vinti ben sette, già si è detto tutto. Altro “ex WSK” che approda nella massima serie del motorsport è Lance Stroll, nuovo pilota della Williams. In Force India, invece, si vedrà stabilmente Esteban Ocon, pilota francese che dal 2009 al 2011 ha disputato le gare WSK conquistando il secondo posto assoluto nella Euro Series 2011 in KF3. Vanta un passato in WSK anche Stoffel Vandoorne, promosso pilota ufficiale McLaren, presente nella WSK International Series 2009 in KF2. Lo stesso anno in cui, in KF3, sfiorava la vittoria Daniil Kvyat, secondo nella generale davanti a Carlos Sainz jr. Oggi, i due, sono compagni in Toro Rosso. Va citato, infine, anche Marcus Ericsson: il pilota della Sauber F1, infatti, nel 2012, quando già correva in GP2, partecipò alla WSK Finals Cup nella classe KZ2 (chiuse 18°).

TYRES SUPPLIERS While last season was characterised by having a single tyre supplier (Vega) for all classes, 2017 sees a return to the paddock of Bridgestone tyres. In fact, the famous Japanese make will provide the tyres for the OK and KZ2 classes. Vega will continue to provide the tyres in the classes reserved to the youngest drivers: OK-Junior and 60 Mini. Below is a detailed report of the tyres used in each class. As per regulations, “rain” tyres be the same make as the “slick” tyres. THE LAST 2016 CHAM Not even three months ago, at Adria, the Final Cup crowned the last champions of the 2016 WSK season. Below are the drivers who ended the season on a high, while we wait to see who will get a flying start to the new season.
MAYA WEUG 60 MINI
An impressive 73 drivers took part in the Final Cup. The first to stake a claim was Han Cenyu. However, it was Caglioni and Ugochukwu who came to the fore in the heats, with three and two wins, managing to take pole in the two Pre-Finals (which both went on to win). The battle heated up in the final. Ugochukwu took the lead followed by Smal, but it was the Dutch driver Maya Weug who waitied until the final bends to skip past everyone and win ahead of Smal and Spina. Ben 73 i piloti al via della Final Cup. Il primo, in qualifica, è Han Cenyu. Nelle manche, invece, prevalgono Caglioni e Ugochukwu, che, con 3 e 2 vittorie, conquistano le pole delle due prefinali (che entrambi vinceranno). In finale la bagarre si fa incandescente. Ugochukwu va in testa seguito da Smal, ma è l’olandese Maya Weug a superare tutti proprio alle ultime curve per andare a vincere su Smal e Spina.
KAROL BASZ OK
Basz was the star of the OK class throughout the WSK season. He won the Champions Cup and disputed the Super Master Series in crescendo, finishing second. In the Final Cup, he immediately showed his strenght, posting a time just 193 milliseconds slower than Novalak’s pole, but winning two of the next three heats. In the PreFinal and the Final, the kept his opponents in check and win ahead of Milell and Travisanutto. Basz è stato il protagonista della classe OK lungo tutta la stagione WSK. Vinta la Champions Cup, ha corso una Super Master Series in crescendo chiusa al secondo posto. Nella Final Cup Basz mostra subito la sua forza, fermandosi a 193 millesimi dalla pole di Novalak, ma vincendo due delle tre manche successive. In prefinale e finale, poi, controlla bene gli avversari e va a vincere davanti a Milell e Travisanutto.

AMPIONS Nemmeno tre mesi fa la Final Cup incoronava, sempre ad Adria, gli ultimi campioni della stagione WSK 2016. Ecco chi, allora, finì nel migliore dei modi la sua annata. In attesa di vedere chi sarà a iniziare altrettanto bene quella di quest’anno.

The OKJ class offered great entertainment in the Final Cup. Watt was the fastest in qualifying, with only 67 thousandths from Eriksson. Watt also won one of the heats, but Martins takes control, managing four wins and taking pole position in the Pre-Final A. However, in the other pre-final, David Vidales started in front of everyone. Martins remained the quickest in the Pre-Final and the Final, conquering the first step of the podium ahead of Milesi and Vidales. Grande spettacolo in OKJ anche nella Final Cup. In qualifica il più veloce è Watt, anche se solo per 67 millesimi su Eriksson. Watt vince anche una manche, ma, qui, è Martins che sale in cattedra, portandosi a casa 4 vittorie e conquistando la pole della prefinale A. Nell’altra prefinale, invece, parte davanti a tutti David Vidales. Martins si conferma il migliore in prefinale e finale, salendo sul podio davanti a Milesi e Vidales.

CATEGORIES ADMITTED
The following international categories will be admitted: OK; OK-JUNIOR; KZ2. Karts must comply with the CIKFIA Technical Regulations. It is not mandatory to use the rear shaft with the CIK-FIA identification sticker. The following national categories will be admitted: 60 Mini. Karts must comply with the ACI/CSAI Technical Regulations. [...] The International Driver Licence grades required per category are as follows : OK JUNIOR: International Driver Licence of Grade C-Junior OK: Grade A, B, C-Senior or C-Restricted KZ2: Grade A - B or C-Senior 60 Mini : all drivers must hold Driver National Licences with authorization or International Licence C Junior.

The 2017 WSK Super Master Series final classification is obtained by adding up, for each diver, all the results of the heats, prefinal and final. In case of ex-aequo the highest number of best positions in the final will be decisive. In case of further exaequo, the highest number of best positions in the prefinal will be decisive. In case of further ex-aequo, the highest number of best positions in the final ranking of the heats will be decisive.
MATERIAL OK, OK-JUNIOR, KZ2, 60 MINI For every event the Drivers can use the following material. Chassis: max 2 models whose make is to be specified by the Entrants on their registration, in line with the CIK-FIA Technical Regulations for OK, OK-Junior, KZ2 and in line with the CSAI National Technical Regulations for 60 Mini. Engines: max 2 models whose make is to be specified by the Entrants on their registration, in line with the CIK-FIA Technical Regulations for the OK, OK-Junior, KZ2 and in line with the CSAI National Technical Regulations for the 60 Mini. 60 Mini: The revolutions per minute (RPM) and the clutch will be checked with the system called “UNILOG” provided by the company UNIPRO.

Rain, WE Vega. The rain tyres must to be of the same make as the Slick tyres. Tyres are distributed by a draw and must be paid for on each event directly to the relevant Manufacturer and will be controlled with the “Parc Fermé tyres” system.

OK, OK-Junior, KZ2, pneumatici con omologazione CIK-FIA. OK: Bridgestone YNB PRIME OK-Junior: Vega XH OPTION Z2: Bridgestone YNB PRIME 60 mini: ogni conduttore può utilizzare, per le prove ufficiali di qualificazione, le manche eliminatorie, la Prefinale e Finale 6 pneumatici “slick” o “rain” (3 ant. + 3 post.). 60 Mini: Slick: SL10 Vega; Rain: WE Vega. I pneumatici “rain” devono essere della stessa marca dei pneumatici “slick”. I pneumatici sono distribuiti per sorteggio e a pagamento, in sede di gara, direttamente dalla Casa interessata e saranno controllati con il sistema del “parco chiuso pneumatici”.
GASOLINE The gasoline (KART RON102) will be given on the track with 25 lt containers by PANTA SPA in compliance with the CIK-FIA Technical Regulations (Art. 21). DIGATRON DT 15 devices are used to control that the gasoline complies with these regulations, comparing it with a sample taken from the fuel distributor (PANTA SPA). In addition, the Stewards of the meeting, after hearing the opinion of the Technical Scrutineers, are entitled to rule, at their sole discretion, that the entire contents of a vehicle’s gas tank be replaced with a mix consisting of gasoline taken from the fuel distributor above and oil, whose make and percentage shall be declared by the Entrant.
La benzina (KART RON102) sarà distribuita direttamente in pista dalla società PANTA SPA con fustini da 25 litri conforme al Regolamento Tecnico CIK-FIA (art.21). La conformità della benzina è controllata con apparecchiature DIGATRON DT 15, per comparazione con campione prelevato dalla PANTA. I Commissari Sportivi, sentiti i Commissari Tecnici, hanno inoltre la facoltà di disporre, a loro discrezione, la sostituzione dell’intero contenuto del serbatoio con la miscela costituita da benzina prelevata dal distributore di cui sopra e di olio di marca e percentuale dichiarati dal concorrente.
