Zealandia’s quest Zealandia Te MƗra a TƗne has launched a fundraising appeal to support their critical conservation work, and their efforts to reconnect people with nature.

The not-for-profit organisation has at its heart an ecosanctuary just 4km from downtown Wellington.

The sanctuary has transformed Wellington into one of the only cities in the world where bird biodiversity is increasing and is now calling for the public’s help to continue breathing life into our forests, skies and city.

Zealandia launches fundraising campaign for conservation efforts Continued from page 1.

Zealandia chief executive Dr Danielle Shanahan says her organisation is keen to build on their mission.

“Zealandia Te MƗra is a vibrant organisation that inspires people to live well with nature.

“The past two years of the pandemic have had an impact on the sanctuary, which relies on visitation as its main source of income.

“Under the COVID-related restrictions, Zealandia has seen visitor numbers decrease as more people stay at home to keep their whƗnau safe. We have launched this appeal to ask our community to help us continue transforming our city for the better,” she says.

Dr Shanahan says Zealandia Te MƗUa a TƗne is much more than a destination to see incredible native wildlife first-hand.

“Zealandia is the heart of a movement.

“While we continue to restore the ecosystem inside the sanctuary, we are also inspiring people of all ages to connect with nature and change the way they interact and live with it in their own backyards and communities.

“The impact of Zealandia Te MƗra a TƗne is far reaching. The organisation’s own globally leading research has shown that a nature-rich lifestyle can help improve our mental and physical health and wellbeing,” says Dr Shanahan.

“By donating, everyone can be part of the reason Zealandia continues to make a difference, not only for wildlife but for Wellington and New Zealand.”

Conservation Manager Jo Ledington says donations will help her rangers to care for endangered wildlife and carry out some major conservation projects this year.

“The sanctuary is home to some of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most rare and extraordinary wildlife. COVID-19 hasn’t stopped any of our important conservation work from happening, including monitoring our rare native taonga as they wrap up their breeding season, maintaining our fence to keep predators out, or planning out how we will carry out a translocation of kƗkahi, our rare freshwater mussel later this year.”

Helena receives Maori Early Career Development in Cancer Research Award Wellington’s Helena Abolins-Thompson is one of three researchers committed to maximising MƗori health gains to be awarded the inaugural MƗori Early Career Development in Cancer Research Awards.

The awards are the first-ever offered in collaboration between Hei Ɩhuru Mǀwai (MƗori Cancer Research Leadership Group) and Te KƗhui Matepukupuku o Aotearoa (Cancer Society of New Zealand) to address health inequities. The three scholarships are worth $160,000 each over three years of full-time study.

Helena, of NgƗti Toa Rangatira descent and who is studying at Otago University, says she was humbled to be one of the recipients of the cancer research

awards.

“This funding is incredibly important to me, and I am so grateful to be a recipient of this scholarship. Having had wKƗnau impacted by cancer myself, the cause is very near and dear to my heart.”

While most cancer research has disproportionately focused on non-MƗori, Helena’s PhD project uses advanced genetic sequencing technologies on tumour samples from MƗRri in partnership with local iwi and patients themselves in collaboration with the Broad Institute in Boston, USA. Along with some high grade British coins, the auction features some very rare New Zealand trial coins and one of the first Reserve Bank 1934 notes, a pound with serial number ‘1A 000001’, according to Mowbray’s Director of Coins and Banknotes, David Galt.

“What will be on offer includes an example of the very first postage stamp from 1855 and a very rare penny claret stamp which was a special issue for the huge 1906 Christchurch Exhibition” he says.

John Mowbray is looking forward to fronting this stamp auction ( his first auction was in 1974) because the live online bidding facility will enhance the possibilities of interest from buyers all over the world.

“I believe the already strong market for stamps, coins, and collectables in general will only get stronger as spending more time at home means people begin picking up their former hobbies again” he says.

Metlink monitoring impact of omicron on services Metlink is closely monitoring the impact of omicron on its front line staff and its knock-on effects on service delivery in the face of rapidly rising rates of community transmission.

“As of (Monday), we are now seeing slightly more than 100 front-line staff affected by omicron-related matters, and we expect many more as the pandemic reaches its peak for us in the Greater Wellington region,” says Metlink General Manager Scott Gallacher.

“We are absolutely focused on continuing to provide an

essential service to our communities, but the reality is that our resources are likely to be stretched to the limit as frontline and support staff become unable to report for work.

“Keeping buses, trains and ferries running in such a dynamic and rapidly changing environment will be difficult, but we will reconfigure the network as needed, particularly on our key routes. We may have to use a combination of cancellations and timetable changes, but we’ll keep as many people travelling on the network as

possible.

“This is a rapidly changing situation. We will continue to monitor how we’re going, and we will provide early and clear information to passengers should our current level of operations change.”

COVID transmissions impact Council’s waste services With the Omicron variant of COVID-19 transmissions increasing around the country, Wellington City Council’s waste services are being affected and asks the public for patience and understanding.

Unfortunately, a number of the team at the Seaview recycling plant are unable to work due to COVID-19 which means the operator has reduced capacity to 75 percent with immediate effect until further notice.

This means that around 25 percent of the co-mingled recycling collected in the Wellington region will not be recycled and will be sent to landfill.

We are working hard with the operators to ensure processing of co-mingled recyclables can be back at 100 percent capacity as soon as possible.

Progress Wellington lament LGWM plan for crossing Progress Wellington, a coalition of Wellington businesses and business groups, has expressed its disappointment with the Let’s Get Wellington Moving announcement to build a pedestrian crossing on State Highway One. “While the raised speed bump has been binned, instead of building and supporting the things to get it moving, the decision is to build a pedestrian crossing on State Highway One - despite the community not wanting this,” says Mary Anderson, Enterprise Miramar Peninsula.

“A local petition reached over 8,000 signatures in favour of an overbridge, and an independent poll of 750 Miramar, Strathmore and Seatoun residents showed they overwhelmingly support an overpass, not a pedestrian crossing, on Cobham Drive.”

When asked to directly compare the overbridge and crossing options, only 17 percent of residents prefer a crossing, even when the extra cost of an overbridge is taken into account.

83 percent of residents believe the proposed crossing will make congestion worse.

“Our residents wanted an overbridge, both our community and commuters.”

Further, the Eastern suburbs house some of Wellington’s top businesses, commuting from around and across the city to work, the last thing that’s needed is a crossing on State Highway One.” Gary Holmes from Kilbirnie Business Network says; “The outcome is concerning to the Business Improvement Districts representing more than 200 businesses in Kilbirnie, Lyall Bay, Rongotai and Miramar, and major employers in the area including Wellington Airport and Weta Workshops.

“However, this is not just a business issue. We are concerned on behalf of all people living and working in the eastern suburbs and want to see the fantastic public transport and roading improvements that were promised - not a crossing.

“It’s a real shame that they haven’t listened to the overwhelming majority of residents and take their views into account.

“However, we do note that LGWM have committed to looking at longer term options such as an underpass or overbridge once decisions have been made on the future form and route for mass transit in Wellington.”

Simon Arcus, Chief Executive of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce says “We’ve said it before and we will say it again - they need do it once, and do it right. Doubling up like this is entirely unnecessary, when an overbridge could keep pedestrians safe now.

“The community is clearly against this proposal, and pushing it through instead of the other things we need along this highway hurts Wellington at a time when businesses need the help up more than ever.

“We need LGWM to show us the progress and construction dates for widening the road, doubling the tunnels, ensuring local and highway grade separation - not the introduction of another set of traffic lights.”

Ia Ara Aotearoa Transporting New Zealand Chief Executive, Nick Leggett says “anyone who would argue this project would reduce carbon emissions, demonstrated how ideology now trumped facts in decision making.

“Slowing down tens of thousands of vehicles down every day at Cobham Drive, thereby requiring them to accelerate, will only increase emissions, create frustration and cause delays on an already congested route.”

Wellington Airport Chief Executive, Steve Sanderson says “It is very disappointing the strong public response has been ignored. Rather than wait to assess other options, we need to do this once and do it right - build an overpass now.”

Members of Progress Wellington will be considering legal options after reviewing the detail and documents released.

Parliament protest and its impact - Greg O’Connor Ohariu MP and former police officer, Greg O’Connor shares his thoughts on the protests at parliament which has dominated the Wellington landscape over the past few weeks.

The occupation of Parliament and its surrounds impacted the Northern and Western suburbs’ residents significantly, mostly through impeded access to the city and workplaces, and so when Police decisively and effectively cleared the whole space with a minimum of injury or additional damage, it was a relief to all around.

As a local MP I was determined to continue to access Parliament most days, and spent a lot of time there with my former Police colleagues.

They went from being somewhat frustrated with the constant criticism that they were allowing an unruly mob to defy the law, to being proud to be part of the incredibly well planned and executed operation to claim back not only the area occupied, but in fact democracy.

Even those injured were keen to get back out with their colleagues to contribute.

They knew the futility of trying to negotiate with an increasingly hostile mob where those genuine protesters had left some time before.

They also recognised many of those

present from previous dealings.

New Zealanders can be justifiably proud of the manner in which their Police performed under pressure from every side.

The Police Commissioner allowed the protesters to believe they had essentially won, while at the same time planning a massive, largely secret operation to bring large numbers of Police and equipment into Wellington to clear the site.

That is smart policing.

It even included an early morning diversion to get the ‘defenders’ to the other side of the site before they moved in.

But success is holding the territory liberated, and working to prevent a repeat; i.e. winning the peace, and so expect to see a big police presence until, through negotiation or otherwise, the threat of another occupation is removed.

It is always important to bargain from a position of strength.

There will be detractors and critics of police actions.

As someone who was on the ground throughout, let me assure you police action was well thought out, and inevitable.

As the saying goes, if your opponent thinks you won’t use force, you will end up having to.

I hope that is not a metaphor for Ukraine.

Council ready to help return streets to Wellingtonians Wellington City Council staff and contractors are standing by and ready to start returning the streets around Parliament to Wellingtonians as soon as possible.

Work will be needed to remove rubbish and items left by occupiers, deep-clean street furniture and infrastructure, and to check and repair city assets in the area including roads, signs, lights and wastewater pipes.

Initial work with mana whenua and central government is also underway to consider the restoration of the mana and mauri of the area, with details of the process to be announced in the coming days.

Since 8 February, those who live, work and go to school in the area around Parliament have been subjected to significant levels of abuse and harassment, with streets illegally blocked by vehicles associated with the occupation.

Anti-social behaviour associated with the illegal occupation has also increased across the city.

Following the large-scale Police operation to clear the area yesterday, the area around Parliament is currently a Police work site, but will be handed back to the City Council once their operation to clear the area is complete.

City Council Chief Executive

Barbara McKerrow said the past three weeks had been an incredibly challenging and upsetting time for many in the city.

“Wellingtonians have experienced prolonged disruption to their lives. We fully understand their frustrations and concerns, and are looking forward to returning Wellington to Wellingtonians.”

Council staff and contractors are ready to move into the area and begin a thorough rubbish removal and deep clean.

Given the presence at the occupation of people known to have Covid, making sure all services are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected is a top priority.

Rubbish and items left by occupiers will be processed and disposed of appropriately.

Council staff will also perform a comprehensive inspection of the area, checking all assets including the road and footpaths, sumps, lights, road signs, and other infrastructure.

Public art and sculptures will be assessed for damage by a specialist team.

Wellington Water inspectors will check and repair any damage to public water and wastewater infrastructure.

We should see a back-log of buyers re-enter the market once they accept this new normal. s Less Houses for Sale: Every year, the sun comes out and lots of properties come to market in Spring / Summer. Traditionally over Autumn and Winter there are a

lot less properties on the market, which reduces the number of options a buyer has.

This will equate to properties getting more attention faster.

Our analysis of the market is from our years of being the most used and most trusted real estate team in this area. By seeing the most buyers / sales / open homes, we can keep a close pulse in this local market. Although market confidence will improve and there should be more buyers based on the above points, it is unlikely we will see prices recover. How much a house sells for is directly linked to buyer affordability – with interest rates rising, there is simply no argument that buyers can afford to pay more.

Strathmore Park Community Centre set for a refresh Construction will begin on the much-anticipated upgrade of the Strathmore Park Community Centre from Monday 4 April.

The Centre is now closed to the public to begin the process of moving all the belongings out of the building for construction to start.

Many services will be relocated due to construction. Construction for the $2.1 million upgrade is expected to be completed in late 2022.

This Council-owned 1940s building, run by the Strathmore Park Community Centre Trust, has provided a much-needed community hub for the people of Strathmore Park, and the Council has worked closely with the Trust to create a design that meets the requirements of the community.

The upgrade will increase functionality, usability, and safety for the community, and will include: s New floor s New kitchen s Better storage s Improved subfloor drainage s Improved insulation s Better internal layout to improve the usability of all the spaces and increase the safety of staff and users s Improved landscaping The exterior will be dramatically enhanced with a new architectural element of the building featuring an artwork by a Motu Kairangi local and mana whenua

Construction will begin on the much-anticipated upgrade of the Strathmore Park Community Centre from Monday 4 April.

Based on Tukutuku (ornamental woven latticework panels) design and principles and inspired by Taniko (decorative weaving), the artwork encompasses two large timber and aluminium screens which sit on the north-east corner of the community centre. The screens frame large windows and are designed to slide open or closed, creating a focal point for the building and welcoming the community into the centre.

Fiona Prestidge, Manager of the Strathmore Park Community Centre Trust says the investment in this upgrade will provide a greatly improved space for the Strathmore Park community.

“It’s exciting to imagine how this upgrade will activate even more groups, events and activities than we see now. The building is going to be a fantastic space for all.”

‘Jez and Jace’ set to entertain What does toxic masculinity, drinking beer, being a rural lad, and the exploration of queer identites equal? Jez and Jace, of course!

Jez & Jace is an improvised comedy/drama show from 30 March to 2 April at BATS Theatre, satroises regional Aotearoa’s treatment of men, masculinity and homosexual relationships Jez & Jace were born from the minds of comedy duo, Nina Hogg and former Johnsonville resident Megan Connolly (Ginge & Minge) one night.

All it took was accidentally diving head first into two toxic male characters with Captain Caketin Sketch Comedy’s Valentines Day show in 2021.

From there, Jez & Jace were officially born.

Jez & Jace’s first debuted as ‘BROsplained’ in July 2021, competing in Late Night Knife Fight and became an instant audience favourite.

They then headlined in September with a 30 minute version.

Both comedians grew up in rural towns, with Hogg in Canterbury and Connolly in rural Victoria, Australia, while exploring their own queerness and how to navigate it in a small community.

“I grew up in a time and place where being a woman-lovingwoman wasn’t really talked about or seen prominently on TV,” Connolly said.

“As I was coming to terms with my sexuality and Identity in my last

Marsden confirms artist in residence Samuel Marsden Collegiate has announced its 2022 Artist in Residence is New Zealand born painter, Monique Barnett.

Monique completed a Bachelor in Fine Arts at Canterbury University School of Fine Arts.

After graduating in 2009, she relocated to Melbourne where she held solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group and curated projects. In 2018 she was awarded an 18 month residence in Frappant e.V. in Hamburg, Germany. Her works are held in collections in New Zealand, Australia, Europe and America.

Since 2017 Monique has been working with

the thematic focus of water using painting, drawing and collage techniques. Having recently returned to New Zealand, Monique will commence her five week residency with us on 2 May. During her residency she will work with senior art students on their portfolios and hold workshops for Marsden students while developing a body of work for a solo exhibition.

At the culmination of her residency Marsden will hold an exhibition of her work at the Academy of Fine Arts, 1 Queens Wharf, Wellington on 1 July.

Yulia Liron has been a registered nurse at Enliven’s Huntleigh and Cashmere Home’s sister-site Chalmers Home in New Plymouth for almost a year after arriving from Israel where she worked as a medical ward nurse for six years. Living and working in New Zealand became her dream after she and her husband travelled to New Zealand in 2015.

“With Enliven’s Eden philosophy of care, residents’ wellbeing and safety are a top priority for everyone who works at Enliven,” explains Yulia.

“I had some experience in aged care and I could feel the difference immediately.

“The environment is friendly, and there are many recreational activities all week long. The residents are happy, and well looked after,” says Yulia.

Clinical nurse manager Joan Martinez says Yulia is a welcome addition to the team.

“She is a very enthusiastic, always eager to learn and works well with the team,” says Joan.

“Her additional role as a preceptor includes role modelling and skill building when it comes to training our new nurses.”

Yulia says she is thrilled with her choice to come to New Zealand and work at an Enliven home as she enjoys a real work life balance. In her free time Yulia enjoys jogging, travelling with family, painting, and attending art events and festivals.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Grow your own seeds: By Wally Richards Raising plants from seeds is a great sense of achievement for most gardeners and when the seeds are the ones you collected for free it is even better.

All plants that you have growing in your gardens seed at sometime, with some plants that maybe years away but with annual plants it is at maturity each year.

Annual plants that are left to seed and die back will have produced fertile seeds if pollination has occurred successfully.

If these seeds are left to fall naturally to the soil then at some ideal time for them, they will germinate and produce seedlings.

Two things prevent this happening the first being you removing the dying plants before they can distribute seed or in the case of many vegetables you have harvested before the crop goes to seed and removed flowering vegetables before they set seed.

When you have left something to flower and drop fertile seeds; then later on if you don’t recognize those seedlings as preferred plants, you may kill them thinking they are weeds.

It is a learning curve to know what is a wanted plant and an unwanted plant but with a little close observation you can score a lot of free plants by allowing mature plants to seed.

When plants produce seed pods that are drying out, then more than likely there are fertilised seeds in the pods which you can harvest for sowing sometime.

This applies to a wide range of plants from roses with rose hips, natives, ornamentals, flowers, vegetables and fruit.

How many of us have eaten a ripe

plum off their tree and spat out the stone?

Months or maybe even years later up pops a plum seedling which will eventually grow into another plum tree, similar or even different from your named plum tree.

There are a number of fruits that we buy that have seeds, which we can collect at no extra cost.

This includes tomatoes, capsicums, beans, peas, pumpkin, passion fruit, melons, apples, citrus, stone fruit, figs, even strawberries.

I have at some time grown all in the list from purchase fruit.

If you come across a special fruit or one that is more difficult to get the seed of from seed packets then you should certainly save the seed and plant them some time.

Whether it is successful or not it really does not matter as it’s free and a bit of a challenge.

Recently we found two Asian foods one type of snake bean and two types of bitter melon.

I collected a few seeds from them and with the snake bean just sat the whole bean on a late afternoon windowsill to dry out and mature the seeds inside.

They are now all growing happily in one of my glasshouses and later we shall find out if they have come true to form.

Collecting some seed from fruit you have grown or purchased is just the matter of removing them from the fruit, laying on a bit of paper towel to allow to dry.

Once they are dry you can either plant them or store them.

The best way to store is to write on the paper towel what they are then place inside a sealed glass jar and then into the fridge where they can

wait till you are ready to plant.

Several types of seeds can be stored in the same jar. The fridge storage means they will keep very well for a long period of time.

I have tomato seed over 30 years old that will still give me about 20 to 50 per cent strike rate.

The fridge also gives the seeds a false winter so when they come out they will think its spring and germinate better as a result.

Spring is normally the best time to bring out seeds you wish to sprout as the day light hours are extending and many seeds relate to that.

Self sown seeds lay dormant until the conditions are ideal for them to sprout, that means light hours, temperature and moisture levels.

When they germinate they send down (in most cases) a long tap root just as the trunk sprouts upwards.

This long tap root has secondary roots formed off it making the plant

sturdy and deep rooting.

This enables the plant to gather food and moisture better than transplants.

So where possible sow your seeds where the plant is going to grow to maturity.

Seeds germinated in cell packs dont have the advantage of deep rooting but they do have the advantage of less root disturbance when transplanting.

Punnet grown seedlings will suffer the most root damage when you separate the seedlings, but another aspect comes into play, the damaged roots will be quicker to produce side roots and also generate a bigger root system.

Normally this time of the year germinating seeds is not a problem as the soil temperatures are supposed to be over 10 degrees.

In a glasshouse where the air temperature is warm seeds in containers will germinate better as long as adequate moisture is applied to the

medium.

Before you cover your seeds spray them with a solution of Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) at 20ml per litre of water. This natural product stimulates the germination to kick in.

When germinating in trays or cell packs use a good compost such as Daltons or Oderings as the base then with a sieve you sieve some of the same mix to make a nice layer of friable smaller particles.

It’s onto this you spread your seeds, spray with MBL and cover by sieving more compost.

In the garden sieve the soil for a seed raising bed. Forget the seed raising mixes they are a waste of time as well as being too expensive when compared to the herbicide free two brands I have mentioned.

Keeping seeds of your favourite vegetables is very important because seed strains disappear overnight as seed companies replace varieties.

Plans to transform Te Ngakau Civic Precinct forging ahead Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, Te Tira Pnjoro o Aotearoa—New Zealand Symphony Orchestra (NZSO), and the Wellington City Council (the Council) have revealed further details for the fit-out of a national music centre in the heart of the capital.

Their plans to transform Te NJƗkau Civic Precinct into a vibrant centre for musical and creative excellence were unveiled on Tuesday.

The commitment between the University and NZSO will see the national music centre occupy space in the Michael Fowler Centre precinct, formed by the new landmark building being developed by Willis Bond at 110 Jervois Quay, and the redeveloped Wellington Town Hall.

To mark this next stage in development, new images were shown to donors and stakeholders at an event in Wellington, where details for the suite of facilities that will comprise the national music centre were described to attendees in detail.

The current intention and plan would see NZSM occupying part of the ground floor—which

will be a public-facing space to celebrate music—as well as all of level one and part of level two, where modern offices and stateof-the-art teaching spaces will be used by NZSM academic and administrative staff.

The NZSO will also occupy part of level two as its administrative base, where it will have sound-proofed practice rooms and ensemble rooms for its musicians.

NZSM, the NZSO, and the Council’s civic activities will co-locate.

NZSO Chief Executive Peter Biggs says: “The most culturally exciting cities on the planet— Berlin, Helsinki, London, Los Angeles, New York, São Paulo, Shanghai, Singapore, and Vienna—have significant centres that celebrate and promote music. In a few years, Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington will be numbered among those cities as the visionary national music centre comes to fruition.”

The NZSO will build state-ofthe-art audio recording facilities and control rooms in the basement of the Wellington Town Hall, creating a complete in-house

package of recording and mixing capability to rival established studios throughout the world. Boxin-box construction will ensure the studio spaces are acoustically isolated providing the highest level of recording facilities available.

“Once completed, the NZSO will be able to record to the highest standard, especially film soundtracks. We have a proud history of recording for film, including Hollywood blockbusters,” Mr Biggs says.

On the ground floor, the Adam Auditorium, named in recognition of the Adam Foundation’s founding gift, will house the magnificent Edwardian pipe organ, which is being fully restored. Seating up to 1500 people.

The ground floor will also feature the T.G. Macarthy Grand Entrance and Staircase, Wellington Community Trust Suites, and the Christopher Parkin Hall, which will contain an artwork to be commissioned and gifted to Wellington

On the second floor, a multipurpose space known as Classroom 2, with capacity to seat 200 people, will be a contemporary space with variable acoustics that can be adapted for classical rehearsal, composition, music therapy, and sonic arts.

Over the past few years, the University and the NZSO have embarked on a $30 million fund-

raising campaign to enable the fit-out of this new national music centre. This next phase of the campaign provides donors with the opportunity to support this transformative project and have their donation recognised by a named plaque on a seat in the Wellington Town Hall.

The NZSM anticipates it will open its teaching spaces to students in Trimester 1, 2026 and the NZSO will occupy the space from January 2026. The Wellington Town Hall remains on track to open in 2024.

Council asks ‘Where’s your happy place?’

Wellingtonians are being asked to share their experiences about their favourite indoor and outdoor spaces around the city in a new survey.

The results of the survey will be used to help update Wellington City Council’s open space and recreation strategy – Our Capital Spaces.

The strategy sets out how the Council will provide for open space and recreation needs across the city as it grows and diversifies.

Chair of Puroro Rangaranga | Social, Cultural and Economic Committee Councillor Jill Day says our open space and recreation network is fundamental to a good quality of life in Wellington.

“These are the places where we connect to nature, take time out from our busy lives, relax, get active and socialise.

“The Council has an important job to ensure there are enough parks and recreation facilities that are fit for purpose and will meet the needs of our growing and changing population over the next 30 years.

“This survey will help to understand how Wellingtonians use these places and their ideas on what would improve their experience and participation in the future.”

Mayor Andy Foster says the parks and

reserves network and range of recreation opportunities play a vital role in how we think and feel about living in Wellington.

“We have one of the best reserves and tracks networks of any city anywhere. They are a vital part of our lifestyle and are what allows us to be such a special place for biodiversity.

“We are blessed with an abundance of special places and spaces from the wild coast to the top of the green belts, gardens and parks, from Otari to Oriental Bay, from hill peaks and back down again, inside and out – so choosing favourites is quite a challenge.

“But we welcome everyone’s input so our public spaces and places are even better for the generations to come.”

The scope of the strategy includes the city’s parks and other public outdoor places such as the waterfront, beaches, nature reserves, street spaces, skateparks and sports grounds.

It also covers public indoor active recreation facilities such as swimming pools and recreation centres.

Say it isn’t so, Warnie I started last week by convincing Mum to buy me a signed cricket ball of Richard Hadlee and Shane Warne.

I figured, Sir Richard was getting on in years and while my birthday wasn’t until June, I’m notoriously difficult to buy for apparently so this would give Mum a year of relative comfort on the present-front.

Never did I think we would lose Warne to a suspected heart attack on Saturday at just the age of 52.

My partner and I are both cricket

tragics and we just laid in bed stunned after waking up to the news.

Both of us are in our early 30s so Warne’s career played out throughout our childhood and we both felt like we lost part of it over the weekend.

Warne was a charismatic enigma both on and off the field, he was appointment viewing when he was chucked the ball.

He revived the art of leg spin, him and him alone and while he

is considered by more respected lovers of the game as a top five player of all time, he achieved great heights while maintaining a level of humility and relatability to the average punter.

Warne played in a Christchurch Earthquake fundraiser at the Basin Reserve in 2011 when he didn’t have to do it.

He also did plenty to help tsunami victims in Sri Lanka in 2005.

He loved a pie and a dart, was never

in Greek God shape physically and always spoke his mind.

He was a relatable radical who shook the game to its core and changed cricket forever.

Perhaps his biggest achievement was his ability to be a likeable Aussie cricketer on this side of the Tasman.

His death is a shockingly sad end to a life which should have had many years left.

Only Warne could bowl a delivery

dubbed “the ball of the century” and have that title hold up.

The Gatting ball in 1993 would have been enough for us mere mortals to dine out on for years had we bowled it, but not Warne, for him, it was only the beginning.

Current Aussie captain Pat Cummins described Warne as “a once in a century player” - I don’t think a century is enough time between drinks for one as marvellous as Shane Keith Warne.

Pearce Cup in limbo after games postponed

There was no play in the Pearce Cup on Saturday as clubs struggle to field a team due to the omicron outbreak.

Johnsonville was set to host Karori at Alex Moore Park on day one of their fourth round encounter but games were postponed on Friday as Karori and other

clubs struggling to field teams.

Johnsonville captain Raki Weerasundara says Johnsonville was ready to play and could have fielded a representative line-up but understood that was not the case for all teams.

“It’s a very tricky situation and it’s an evolving one. We all sympathise with teams who have been hit hard and who

are trying to field a team.”

Raki says he was awaiting further advice from Cricket Wellington about whether day two of the match would go ahead and what impact it may have on the Pearce Cup with two rounds to go.

Johnsonville are top-of-the-table and currently would host the final which is scheduled for April 1.

Tissera to step down from Cricket Wellington after 15 years Cricket Wellington youth development coach Ivan Tissera has announced he will step down from his role and leave Cricket Wellington at the end of the 2021/22 season.

Tissera has dedicated over 15 years to Cricket Wellington with the development of the Wellington School of Cricket, as well as across almost every male and female representative coaching role in Wellington.

He’s also played a key role with Johnsonville cricketers including Raki and Kevin Weerasundara.

“It’s been a really, really long journey through lots of ups and downs, but I’ve had a wonderful time and worked with so many brilliant players, coaches and staff, but it feels right for me to now move on and let someone else have a go,” he said.

“I’m so grateful to have been able to hold a spot as a coach with this organisation for such a long time, but I’m really excited with the group of young coaches now coming through who I know will do a brilliant job going forward.

“What I’m going to miss the most is being part of a good Cricket Wellington unit, where everyone bonds together and strives to achieve collective goals – that’s what makes being a coach so worthwhile.”

Tissera joined Cricket Wellington in 2007 as coach of the Wellington Cricket Academy, now known as the Wellington School of Cricket, and has gone on to heavily influence Cricket Wellington’s talent pathway, nurturing and developing many pathway cricketers to go on to achieve domestic and international honours.

A hugely experienced spin bowling coach, Tissera has dedicated ten years to developing Wellington’s best spin bowlers as specialist spin bowling coach and is widely credited for the development of Blaze and WHITE FERNS spin sensation Melie Kerr.

“Ivan has been a pillar of our organisation for a long time so he will be missed by players, coaches and staff alike, and I would like to express my thanks for his commitment to Cricket Wellington – we know the impact of his work over the last 15 years will have a long-lasting effect on the organisation.”

Cricket Wellington will be recruiting for two vacant coaching positions in the coming weeks.

Success for Karori athletes at national champs Three senior Karori Club athletes have achieved amazing results representing Wellington at the New Zealand Track and Field Championships in Hastings last week.

Max Abbot won gold in the under-20 discus, successfully defending his 2021 title.

He also won a silver medal in the under-20 hammer throw and came fourth in the under-20 shot put.

Alex Martin competed in the under-18 800m and placed fourth.

He earned a bronze medal in the 1500m with a personal best of 4:01m.

Heath Abbot came 4th in under-18 hammer throw.

Heath threw a massive personal best by 8.59m with a best distance of 47.84m with the 5kg hammer-throw; he turned 15 the next day.
