One of the highlights of his long career in sport was winning silver in the men’s 200 meters wheelchair race.

But his prowess as an athlete goes even further back than this.

Stuart had always enjoyed sport and originally was a keen weightlifter and bench pressed a record weight breaking Precious McKenzie’s junior New Zealand record.

Stuart says when weightlifting started to make his disability worse he had to give up when his neurosurgeon at the time

Graham Martin, told him he would end up paralysed from the neck down if he continued.

“He said it wasn’t all bad news and that I should get into wheelchair racing,” he says.

That’s what he did, and with the help of his new coach Brian Lynch, Stuart qualified to the 1987 International Stoke Mandeville Games.

Stuart says that “Brian was a master at getting me to peak at exactly the right time for whatever competition I was entering.”

His first international competition in England at Stoke Mandeville was very successful

as Stuart won 4 medals: gold in the 200m 1C, silver in the 100m 1C, and bronze in the 400m and 800m 1C, racing in a $30.00 home built wheelchair.

Just 1 year later, Stuart competed at the Seoul 1988 Paralympic Games, along with 16 other New Zealand Paralympians who collectively won 17 medals. In South Korea, Stuart won a silver medal in the 200m 1C. By that time he had acquired a custombuilt racing wheelchair.

“They used to call me Bender because that’s when I would make my move and get way ahead,” Stuart says.

“What they hadn’t realised was I had one arm longer than the other and it was perfect for going round the bend.”

After his retirement from Para athletics in 1990, Stuart became involved in indoor bowls and was in the Hutt Valley able bodied representative team for several years.

Stuarts pin is one of a number being presented to fellow Paralympians to celebrate them as part of our Paralympic cultural heritage and officially acknowledges the achievements of 209 Paralympians as being equal to that of Olympians.

Kapa Haka Te Papa Wainuiomata schools and kindergartens head to Te Papa to provide entertainment from the kids for the kids.

A kapa haka performance by kids for kids, and whanaungatanga got underway at the Marae with performers including young children from Tai Tamariki and Totara Park Kindergartens, Hill Street Early childhood Centre and older children from Kelson, Wainuiomata and Fernlea Primary Schools.

The performance was a challenge for children to perform in an authentic public place.

Aid to Humanity

By: Gerald Rillstone Against the backdrop of Covid 19 local branch of the Cristo,Church of Christ, have swung into action providing 50 grocery bags for the community.

Wainuiomata member of the congregation Greg Besa says from time to time the congregation has been doing voluntary community works as a way of helping the local government and people in the region.

“It is indeed sad to note that the Covid19 pandemic has disrupted our way of life, and its economic consequences have become evident as many people lost their sources of livelihood; and,

as a result, would be deprived of basic necessities,” Greg says.

“It is against this backdrop that our congregation would like to strengthen our partnership with the Hutt Multicultural Council in doing what is best for our communities.”

“In relation with this, our group is launching an ‘Aid to Humanity” project with the Multicultural Council by donating no less than 50 grocery bags for the most indigent members of the community.”

The group have coordinated with Gabriel Tupou of the Wainuiomata Community Board to donate another 50 grocery bags for those who are in dire

need in Wainuiomata.

Beneficiaries of the bags were Hutt Multicultural Council and Wellington District Maori Wardens.

Aid To Humanity (ATH) is a community undertaking of the Iglesia ni Cristo/Church of Christ through its charitable arm-”Felix Y. Manalo Foundation.

It is aimed at helping those people who are in dire need. It is regularly taking place in 157 countries and territories wherein there are church congregations.

Six venues across the country held ATH events, Auckland, Levin, Wellington and Hutt Valley for the North Island and

Christchurch and Invercargill in the South Island.

In Hutt Valley, Gabriel Tupou, Wellington District Commander of Maori Wardens and also Chair of the Wainuiomata Community Board, received the grocery bags for the Maori Wardens in Wainuionta.

Another beneficiary is the Hutt Multicultural Council, a non-profit organization that promotes cultural diversity by catering to the needs of peoples from various cultural backgrounds who are residing in the city.

Vice-Chair Winsome Lam and Board Member Anita Mansell will receive the donation on behalf of the organization.

Greater Wellington councillors are singing the same tune, announcing their top five species for Bird of the Year 2020; kākā, tūturiwhatu (banded dotterel), kererū, tīeke (North Island saddleback) and korimako (bellbird).

The Wellington region is home to many unique native species, but there is something to be said for these birds who have incredible resilience and are growing in abundance, Greater Wellington councillor Ros Connelly says.

“This year we decided to do something a little different by selecting five birds, rather than the one, we want to share what’s so special about these species and encourage the public to vote for these five birds.

The kākā flies as the councillors first choice, closely followed by tūturiwhatu (banded dotterel), kererū, tīeke (North Island saddleback) and finally korimako (bellbird).

Results show that their numbers have nearly tripled since monitoring began in 2011. And, they are continuing to extend their range into more northern suburbs such as Johnsonville and more eastern suburbs like Miramar.

Enliven’s Woburn Home WOWs with sustainable style While Covid-19 may have scuppered the official Wearable Arts show from happening in Wellington this year, it was full steam ahead for Enliven’s Woburn Home in Lower Hutt.

Staff and residents at the home spent weeks working away on outfits for the annual show, which is now a highlight in the positive ageing service provider’s calendar.

The theme this year was ‘Reuse, Repurpose and Recycle’, inspired by Woburn Home’s green initiatives to reduce waste and do their bit to help the environment. “ T he residents have so much pride in the event,” says Woburn Home recreation officer Ashleigh Marr.

“They come up with the ideas, create the costumes, model them and look forward to it every year.”

Elsie Thomsen and Betty McMillan were models this year.

Elsie’s dress, made by Woburn Home’s day programme staff and clients, featured old CDs and album covers.

Betty’s outfit was also made by day programme clients and was covered in colourful pom poms, made by a staff member’s mother who lives nearby.

“It was a lot of fun,” Betty says of her experience walking in the show.

“My outfit was very well done – a lot of work has gone into it.”

Elsie says “excitement was simmering” around the home on the day of the show.

“The staff were so well organised; it all went so smoothly.”

Elsie’s outfit won an award for the best use of recycled materials. The outfit that won

the overall award this year was named ‘Cadbury Chocolate Box’. It was made from old foil and chocolate boxes, by Woburn Home recreation officer Aynur Daymond and residents who folded and crafted the foil roses for the skirt.

The outfit was modelled by Woburn Home resident Julie Exley, who also handed out chocolates to members of the audience as she made her way down the runway.

Enliven’s Woburn Home and Apartments, located on Wai-iti Crescent, Lower Hutt, offers independent retirement living, rest home, hospital, and dementia care, as well as short-term respite, health recovery and a day programme.

Making Christmas special

This Christmas will bring something special for kids who will receive a present thoughtfully put together by students at Wainuiomata High School.

To bring some special cheer to those that need it the whole school took part in Christmas shoe box for kids, a project being carried out in different schools around Wellington.

At Wainuiomata High School each Manaaki class and staff members were given a child to get a gift for and Kaci Faitele, House Captain

for Tuwhare House, at the school says all up they filled and delivered 40 boxes.

“Due to Covid-19 our schools main focus this year has been our personal wellbeing so it has been extra special to help others in this difficult time. We have all absolutely loved participating and we hope that each child who receives our gifts love them,” Kaci says.

This has been the 3rd year doing Christmas Shoe Box, Kaci says, “ I’m sure there will be many more.”

Country’s rising star By: Gerald Rillstone Ngarangi Sadlier-Patmore has taken out one of Country and Westerns top awards this year winning the New Zealand Country Music Association “entertainer of the year” in the intermediate section.

At the awards recently held in Taupo, Ngarangi competed with some of the best artists on offer in New Zealand.

Now 17 years old she has been singing Country since she was 4 and her passion for music extends well into her future with her preparing to study at Victoria University.

In her final year at Sacred Heart College Ngarangi has her sights set on heading to Victoria University studying classical performance.

“I have heard that I have been accepted and I will be doing classical singing,”

Ngarangi says.

“I have been training with my teacher Fiona Macabe for the past four years and have been part of the Victoria University programme for the past year.”

She intends to continue performing country music and as part of the award Ngarangi will be flown down to the South Island next year to perform in a show down there.

In the long term Ngarangi would like to be a classical opera singer and would also like to teach music.

For next years New Zealand Country Music Association competitions Ngarangi says she intends to jump ahead from the intermediate section to the senior awards section in the hope of winning again.

She has also won the overall best song writer award in the Association in the past.

Wainuiomata artists on display By: Gerald Rillstone Wainuiomata’s Art Exhibition has special importance this week with a number of pieces going up for auction with some of the proceeds of sales going to Dallas Serj’s Student Youth Union.

Exhibition creator and curator Estelle Cainey has called on local artists to display their work and and among the contributors

to the annual exhibition is Louis Mikaere who has kindly donated one of his pieces to be auctioned with a portion of the funds going to support the Student Youth Union, Estelle says.

The auction will take place between 11am and 12 on Sunday at Inspire Art Gallery.

Among those exhibiting are newly elected Labour MP Ginny Andersen and Hutt City Mayor Campbell Barry.

Lawn pest insect problems: By Wally Richards

There are three insect pests that are the main problem ones in lawns; grass grubs, porina and black beetle grubs. The affect they have on your lawns depends on the number of the pests in a given area. A few, will hardly be noticed, where a good number per square foot will damage the grasses and be easy to see. Damage can be seen by bare spots, brown, dead areas or discoloured grasses.

Birds are a very good indicator that there are grubs in the lawn when they spend their time scratching and pecking in certain areas.

If there are dead areas which have appeared in the spring or early summer then it is likely that grass grubs did cause the problem by eating the roots of the grasses in the autumn and into the winter. The grasses would have appeared ok in the winter, even though they had little root system left, because they were not actively growing. In the spring when they started to grow on the root system left, which was insufficient to support the grass, thus it browns off and dies. In the meantime the grubs have burrowed deep into the soil to pupate and then emerge about October to December as beetles.

There may well be a few

grass grubs in the lawn at this time and by lifting some turf you can soon find out and how many there are per square foot.

If there are a few like 1 to 5 then it’s hardly worth while bothering with a treatment, a greater number would be worthwhile to treat. Most likely the reason the birds are working the lawn is for porina caterpillars which also live in the soil. Porina come up in the early part of the evening to feed at the base of the grasses.

These are easy to control by firstly mowing the lawn to allow the spray you are going to use, to reach the base of the grasses where they feed. Then in late afternoon mix Wallys Super Neem Tree Oil at the rate of 5mils per litre of warm water and apply that to your lawn area. Using a lawn boy will do the best job to get a good coverage.

For spraying you are looking to get the spray to the base of the blades of grass where the grubs are going to fed. That night when the grubs come up to feed they will get a dose of Neem and that turns off their ability to ever eat again. If the birds eat them they will not be affected and worms in the soil will be ok too.

The time to treat for grass grubs in the lawns is in the autumn when the soil is

moist and they are feeding near the surface. The other time is when they are beetles, which is about now. With porina they can be treated all year round whenever they are present.

Treatment for grass grubs and black beetle grubs can either be a strong chemical one or a safe natural one such as Wallys 3 in 1 for lawns which is a mix of Eucalyptus and Tea Tree oils.

This will not harm wild life, pets or worms, where the chemical ones will.

You can set up a grass grub beetle trap by placing a trough, such as the one used when wall-papering, directly underneath a window facing a lawn area.

Fill the trough with water to about two-thirds of its capacity, then place a film of kerosene on top of the water. Put a bright light in the window, the beetles will fly towards the lit window, hit the glass and fall into the trough.

The kerosene acts as a trap, preventing the fallen beetles from climbing out.

You can extend this method to areas away from the house by using a glass tank, such as might be used for an aquarium. Place the empty tank into a tray containing several inches of water (and the kerosene), and position a light inside the glass tank.

By adding a sheet of ply

or something similar over the top of the tank, you will ensure that the light shines only through the sides of the tank above the waiting water and kerosene.

It is better to use a domeshaped battery-powered light rather than an ordinary torch for this job as the bigger light makes the trap more effective. If the tray and tank are raised off the ground and placed on something like a table, you will get an even better result.

However you set up your beetle trap, this is a very good method to dispose of the pests. Simply get rid of all the beetles caught the next morning by flushing down the toilet or feeding to chooks. Run this system (call it Wally’s Grass Grub Beetle Catcher, if you like) from just before dusk to about 2 or 3 hours after sunset. If you see lots of the brown beetles then mix up a spray of the Neem tree Oil with Wallys Super Pyrethrum added and go out and spray the pests.

The pyrethrum is a quick knock down and should wipe out good numbers of them.

The more beetles you can kill means less damage to your lawns next year.

Seeking youth engagement with Parliament

Parliament’s engagement team is calling for young Kiwis to develop and promote a project of their choice, with the aim of increasing youth awareness of, and participation with, their Parliament. They’ll do so as one of eight members of a new youth group called Rito.

People aged 16-20 are invited to apply. No experience or knowledge of Parliament is necessary - just an understanding of how to engage with young people.

They’ll also need to be planning to reside in Wellington, Kapiti, the

Wairarapa, Palmerston North or neighbouring towns in 2021.

As a paid opportunity, members will receive the living wage for every workshop they attend. There are eleven, two-hour workshops planned for 2021. All travel expenses to and from workshops will also be covered.

To apply, an application form should be sent along with a submission outlining who the applicant is, what they’re passionate about, and why they want to be part of Rito.

The format of the submission is up to them.

They can, send a picture, write a blog, create a mock petition on why they should be part of Rito and get family and friends to sign it, make a video, send a cover letter and CV, write a list of ten reasons why they should be part of Rito, create a website or write an essay.

Applications are now open and will close 11.59pm, 30 November 2020.

Applicants should be advised of the outcome of their application by mid December 2020, with Rito scheduled to have its first meeting in February 2021.

Melbourne Cup deaths at unacceptable rate There must be serious questions asked as to why so many horses are dying in the Melbourne Cup in recent years.

Now, before I go further, I must out myself as a horse racing fan.

I love the sport, have done since I was a child and I believe it is an important industry for any economy.

However, the death rate in Australasia’s greatest two mile gallops race in recent years is unacceptable.

Anthony Van Dyck is the sixth horse to die after taking part in the Melbourne Cup since 2013, on

Tuesday.

It has been widely noted that most of the casualties had been bred and trained in other countries. Fatal leg injuries were sustained by France’s Verema in 2013 and Britain’s Red Cadeaux in 2015. Cliffs Of Moher, from the same Irish stable as Anthony Van Dyck, that of Aidan O’Brien, broke a shoulder in 2018.

Japan’s Admire Rakti collapsed and died after the 2014 race. Araldo, who sustained a leg injury after that race when spooked by a flag-waving spectator, had been trained in Aus-

tralia for more than a year before his death but is sometimes referred to as a British horse.

Dulcify in 1979 is believed to be the last Australasian-bred runner to die in the race.

A Racing Victoria spokesman said a report into Anthony Van Dyck’s death would take several weeks to complete and would include the results of a post-mortem..

More must be done from all areas of the racing fraternity to stop what is now becoming a common occurrence.

The weight these horses must carry needs to be looked at, as does the punishing nature of a two mile race in 2020.

Anthony Van Dyck was winner of more than £2m in prize money in the UK before setting his sights on the Melbourne Cup. His death also curtailed a sure-fire stud career for both the horse and connections.

Kerrin McEvoy was also fined $50,000 and banned for 13 meetings for excessive whipping on race favourite and runner-up,

Tiger Moth.

I firmly believe these horses love to run, race and wIn but a death of a horse for the financial gain of humans is an absolute waste.

Racing Victoria has an issue with how the great race is currently run.

Whether it’s weights, track preparation, jockey behaviour or something else, the time for action is now.

Deaths of horses on the biggest day in racing, when so many watching only do so one day of the year, is a black eye on the sport.

Champions galore

By Andy McGechan It was champions galore at the 2020 edition of the annual New Zealand Veterans’ and Women’s Motocross Championships near Gore at the weekend.

Former national motocross champions, current champions and rising stars all locked handlebars at the two-day event on farmland property at Riversdale, midway between Lumsden and Gore, on Saturday and Sunday and put on a stunning show for the large crowd in attendance.

The popular annual event featured many riders who, despite their veteran status, still rate among the sport’s elite, while the female side of the sport that shared the race programme was just as intense.

There were several stand-out individuals at the weekend, riders who each finished their respective campaigns unbeaten on the race track, and these riders were Rangitata’s Eldon McGaw (vets 30-34 years’ class); Masterton’s Johnny

Burkhart (vets 35-39 years’ class); Motueka’s Josh Coppins (vets 40-44 years’ class); Cambridge’s Mike Cotter (vets 45-49 years’ class); New Plymouth’s Mitch Rowe (vets 55-59 years’ class); Pukekohe’s Tony Cooksley (vets over-60 years’ class) and Hastings’ rider Halle Cox (junior women 12-16 years’ class).

Waipu’s Neil Boniface won the “handicapped” (points earned in race plus the rider’s age) Champion of Champions feature race that wound up the weekend.

Motorcycling New Zealand president Noel May was a spectator at the event and said the weekend was “perfect in so many ways”.

“I was really impressed by the number of people who travelled so far to be here and they were all just glowing about how well the event was run.

Host Gore And District Motorcycle Club president Brendon Stevens said the venue was “dry and dusty on day one, but welcome rain overnight made it perfect for Sunday”.

Touch team unbeaten Wainuiomata Intermediate School’s mixed touch team competed at the annual Intermediate Mixed Touch Tournament at Hutt Park last week and turned on an ouitstanding performance.

Coach and assistant principal Issac Hayes says this year they were lucky enough to enter two teams. Both of which had been training hard over the past 4 weeks.

Wainuiomata Intermediate School A team managed to finish pool play unbeaten, scoring 35 plus touch downs over 5 games and only conceding 8 touch

downs,” Issac says.

The schools development team finished pool play with 2 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses.

“Unfortunately, the WIS development team just missed out on making the semi-finals. However, they won their 5th/6th game against Fergusson,” he says.

Wainuiomata Intermediate School A team went on to play Hutt Intermediate in the semifinal and won the game 5-1.

Which meant they progressed through to the final against Newlands Intermediate.

The game got off to a fast start

with both teams scoring early touch downs, however, as the game went on WIS pulled away and won the final 8-2.

“Our students showed excellent skill throughout the day, tino pai,” Issac says.

“An awesome result from both teams and a fun fact is this is the 3rd year in a row we have won this tournament and the 4th time in 5 years, The WIS touch kids are going places and thanks to everyone who made yesterday possible, without everyone’s help days like yesterday don’t happen.”
