As Aotearoa emerges from its bubble, there’s a much bigger chance of catching the flu.

And, with international borders opening, we’ll see new and reoccurring strains of flu spreading in our communities.

The flu can be serious and make people very unwell. It affects the whole body and can last up to a week or more.

In some cases, the flu can put people in hospital – particularly if you are 65 plus, or 55 and over Maori or Pacific. In severe cases the flu can be fatal – around 500 people die from the flu every year.

As you get older your immune system isn’t as good at protecting you, even if you feel fit and healthy. That’s why it’s important to boost your protection with a flu jab.

Cherri Matthews who is a clinic lead nurse for Kokiri Marae says the set up at the Wainuiomata Marae allows for people to pull up in their car and receive the influenza vaccine and the COVID vaccine as well as pick up RAT tests.

“Influenza is a deadly virus as well and at the moment COVID has taken the spotlight but influenza is still out there and we know that different strains circulate each year and so the vaccine is prepared for the strains that are more prevalent this year,” Cherrie says.

the flu vaccine as the COVID.” She says free flu jabs are available for people aged 6 months and over with any of the following conditions: Chronic heart problems, excluding high cholesterol or high blood pressure, if they haven’t caused problems with other organs Cerebrovascular disease Chronic breathing or lung problems, including asthma where regular preventative medicine has been prescribed Diabetes

Chronic kidney disease Cancer that’s not in remission, excluding skin cancers if not invasive Other conditions such as autoimmune disease, immune suppression, immune deficiency, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), transplant recipients, neuromuscular and central nervous system diseases, cochlear implant, error of metabolism at risk of major metabolic decompensation, pre- or post-splenectomy, Down syndrome, haemoglobinopathies

and children on long term aspirin.

Free flu jabs are also available to children aged between six months and 5 years who have a history of significant respiratory illness.

At the Wainuiomata Marae the RAT tests are available Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 10am to 4pm and the flu vaccines are available on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 1pm.

The outreach camper-vans also are providing the same service Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday in various areas.

Founding Toastmaster still competes

Diane Isherwood has been heavily involved with Wainuiomata Toastmasters from its inception but it wasn’t something she initially thought was her kind of thing.

A retired accountant Diane got involved with Toastmasters in Wellington back in the 90’s but being a bit shy wasn’t keen on continuing after taking part for five or six weeks.

“I couldn’t cope I was just too shy but eight years later I had to go back because I had been made a team leader at work,” Diane says.

This was a turning point for Diane, she had built up her confidence and began to enjoy it and with her new found confidence she started Toastmasters Wainuiomata around 2007.

“There are two parts to Toastmasters, the confidence in communication and there is the leadership side. I started off to build up my confidence because I couldn’t talk in front of people and then I ended up on the leadership side.”

Being in the leadership role meant Diane was looking after four to six clubs and at one stage she was division director looking after around 60 clubs.

Developing your confidence with Toastmasters is a valuable skill to have for your working career Diane says because a lot of the skills you learn are just what is needed in a leadership role.

“It’s about communication and leadership and something you learn a lot about is to be a listener,” Diane says.

They meet weekly and there are three parts to the meeting, impromptu speaking where you are given a topic and go to the front and speak for one to two minutes on it.

“It is ideal if you are doing an interview or having a question and answer session, learning how to format answers. It is useful in your personal life in talking to children or teachers and it helps you get your ideas quickly and organised.”

The second part of the meeting is prepared speeches which are around five to seven minutes but can be longer.

“The third part of the meeting to me is the most valuable part which is evaluations, everything you do you are evaluated on, your presentation skills and the format but it is always done in a positive way,” Diane says.

Healthy drinks in schools The New Zealand Dental Association (NZDA) is pleased that the government is looking at the issue of health drinks in schools through a public consultation.

We praise the Minister of Education Chris Hipkins for addressing the issue of unhealthy drinks in schools.

From the dental perspective, the evidence is clear that unhealthy beverages are having an impact on the dental decay rates of New Zealand children.

The NZDA position on this is clear, we would like to see the most impactful change. There is a need to include all schools in this change, that includes secondary schools.

Searching for certainty

In the middle of a housing crisis and with land ripe for development on Wood Street Wainuiomata there is still no word on developing it into housing.

The land has the potential to cater for 30 to 35 homes.

Hutt South National list MP Chris Bishop is still petitioning Labour minister of housing Megan Woods to get answers for residents but the whole things seems to be, “shrouded

in mystery,” he says.

Back in March 2021 he questioned the minister over what was happening with the site so he could give the residents some certainty over what to expect.

At the time he was told the development would be delivering around 30-35 permanent homes for public and transitional housing with the hope that it will make best use of the land and meet some of the urgent housing need in the area.

“Kainga Ora was to be purchasing

the land a year ago but nothing has happened, the answer to my question says they are still interested in it being used to address housing demands,” Chris says.

“An overwhelming number of residents want the land to be used but most importantly they want some certainty about what’s going on and it just seems like a complete case of incompetence.”

The land now sits in the Crown Land Bank, Te Arawhiti, he says.

In last week’s edition of the Wainuiomata News there was an article about the need for people to help out making Peggy squares to be used to make blankets for the winter.

The Kokiri Marae Pataka Kai is holding a Peggy square appeal to help create beautiful knitted blankets.

It was incorrectly reported the number of

stitches needed.

The correct requirement for the Peggy squares according to a post from Deb Mcivor of the Pataka Kai shop is, cast on 35 stitches knit 60 rows, 4mm knitting needles double knitting yarn.

She has also said as penance for getting the information wrong in the first article the reporter has to come to the Pataka Kai and sew together any misshaped squares so please follow the instructions.

HCC awarded for recreation Outstanding Project – The winner was Hutt City Council for the development and delivery of Play in the Hutt.

New Zealand recreation professionals receive national recognition and Hutt City Council is among them.

Recreation Aotearoa presented the 2020/2021 Recreation Awards to industry professionals around the country. The awards took place online after two years of delay due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“It felt great to finally be able to honour the incredible people and projects within Aotearoa’s recreation sector. There has been a high calibre of work taking place over the last few years, even with the disruption of COVID-19, and it feels more important than ever to celebrate these successes,” Andrew Leslie, Recreation Aotearoa CEO says.

Ten awards were presented, including six Outstanding Awards and four Individual Awards.

Rising tide of illegal dumping Builders waste, whiteware, electrical, garage tyres, cars and general waste are piling up along the Hutt River/Te Awa Kairangi riverside, leaving an ugly and costly mess for Greater Wellington and both Hutt Valley councils to clear up.

“Littering and dumping rubbish along the river corridor isn’t new, but seems to be increasing in the face of rising tip fees and hard economic times,” Greater Wellington River Ranger Joby Mills says.

“We’re finding that the very features that attract visitors, the bushlined riverside, provide shelter and cover for dumping. This behaviour shows total disrespect for the river and brings with it the prospect of significant pollution from oil and other unwelcome substances.

“People need to stop thinking short term and start thinking about the longer term effects of dumping. Ultimately it’s not free as the consequences on the environment can be costly.”

While Greater Wellington’s responsibilities extend from stop bank to stop bank, including the Hutt River Trail and the Remutaka cycle trail, it works with local councils to keep the riverside clean and safe.

“We have to collaborate quickly once dumped material is found to make sure it doesn’t end up in the water, as inevitably it does when the river floods,” Joby Mills says.

Thousands of dollars are spent on clean-up, particularly when large items such as burned out and dumped vehicles and builders’ waste are involved. Costs come from the collection of rubbish by Greater Wellington’s flood protection team and landfill costs for disposal based on weight. Dumped tyres, which are common along the river, are disposed of sustainably at significant financial cost to regional ratepayers.

“Stopping this is in the hands of the community. We want their help to end this dumping and protect the environment. Early reporting would help us greatly to try and

track down the perpetrators.

“With community help, our time could be better placed enhancing the river experience through environmental development and restoration rather than rubbish

removal,” Joby says.

Hutt City Council’s draft Annual Plan City Council has released its draft Annual Plan 2022-23, Nga Ekenga Making Progress, for public engagement.

“When we adopted our bold and ambitious 10-Year Plan last year, our community told us that we need to front up to the challenges we face as a city. For this coming financial year, we’re doing exactly that,”Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says.

“Throughout this draft Annual

Plan, you will see us putting budget lines into action. We will invest $26.7 million to make headway into building a new Naenae Pool.

“As part of our necessary $587 million investment over the next 10 years, we will be spending $48.7 million on upgrading our ageing drinking, sewage and storm water network.

“These projects, and many others across our city over the next 12 months, all aim to do one thing - get the basics right. By investing heavily in our basic infrastructure in a financially responsible way, we can

progress with laying solid foundations for the future of our city.”

Hutt City Council’s Chief Executive Jo Miller says the focus of the draft Annual Plan is to deliver on key infrastructure projects in an environment of rising costs. “Through embedding cost savings and other efficiency gains, rates increases have been constrained to keep to those projected in our 10-year plan. This has been challenging, but it’s important that we meet the

expectations of our council and community and deliver on what we say we will do.”

Residents can have their say by completing an online survey which opens 12 April, and runs until 3 May 2022. Council will consider feedback and adopt the final Annual Plan on 30 June 2022.

ANZAC celebrations planned

ANZAC parade plans for Wainuiomata are underway for 2022.

COVID won't get in the way of ANZAC commemoration events in Wainuiomata.

The dawn parade at the cenotaph will take place as it has in other years beginning at 6am and then it will move down to the memorial gardens and the main parade

will commence at 11am.

The main parade will start at the BP on Wainuiomata Road and participants will march down Fitzherbert Road, up Queen Street to the cenotaph.

This year there will be no refreshments available but people are encouraged to patronise local businesses afterwards.

A decade of What’s Cooking... service in Air Fryer Churros With Chocolate Sauce

Ingredients: s 1/2 cup water s 1/4 teaspoon kosher salt s 1/4 cup , plus 2 Tbsp. unsalted butter, divided s 1/2 cup (about 2 1/8 oz.) all-purpose flour s 2 large eggs 1/3 cup granulated sugar s 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon s 4 ounces bittersweet baking chocolate, finely chopped s 3 tablespoons heavy cream s 2 tablespoons vanilla kefir

1. Bring water, salt, and 1/4 cup of the butter to a boil in a small saucepan over medium-high. Reduce heat to medium-low; add flour, and stir vigorously with a wooden spoon until dough is smooth, about 30 seconds. Continue cooking, stirring constantly, until dough begins to pull away from sides of pan and a film forms on bottom of pan, 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer dough to a medium bowl. Stir constantly until slightly cooled, about 1 minute. Add eggs, 1 at a time, stirring constantly until completely smooth after each addition.

Transfer mixture to a piping bag fitted with a medium star tip. Chill 30 minutes.

2. Pipe 6 (3-inch long) pieces in single layer in air fryer basket. Cook at 380°F until golden, about 10 minutes.

Repeat with remaining dough.

3. Stir together sugar and cinnamon in a medium bowl.

Brush cooked churros with remaining 2 tablespoons melted butter, and roll in sugar mixture to coat.

Aneterea S’au and his family celebrated 10 years of serving the community on Saturday at the Samoan Revival Church of the Nazarene on Fitzherbert Road Wainuiomata.

As part of his church work he has advocated for people to get visas, supported people to get into housing and has run the Wainuiomata Fruit and Vegetable Co-op, providing affordable healthy food to Wainuiomata families.

When high food costs made it a struggle for many families to eat healthily Aneterea has put his time into the fruit and vegetable co-op running out of the Wainuiomata church offering fresh produce from $10 a bag.

He has also supported community groups for youth services currently run from the church.

His selfless dedication to others has made many lives in Wainuiomata richer.

NZ GP roadracing titles centre of attention

The motorcycling community is bouncing back after two seasons interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone involved determined to resurrect racing at the ultimate level once again.

The pandemic caused all sorts of disruptions to major sporting events world-wide and New Zealand was not immune to these, the annual New Zealand Superbike Championships series being cut short in 2020, similarly reduced in size to just three rounds in 2021 and unable to be raced at all in 2022.

So it's fair to say the nation's elite road-racers are fizzing to get going again on the tarmac, their throttles twisted to the stops and fans gathered to enjoy the spectacle.

And so, thanks to the insightful and proactive work of Motorcycling Canterbury, in co-operation with Motorcycling New Zealand,

the single-race New Zealand Grand Prix title races for 2022 are ready to go ahead over the Easter Weekend, in just over a week's time.

Christchurch's Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Ruapuna, will host these coveted GP title races at the Bridgestone Tyres-sponsored event on the weekend of April 16-17.

The programme for day one on Saturday will effectively be that of a club day only, with practice and qualifying, followed by two nonchampionship races for each of the seven separate bike classes.

The following day, Easter Sunday, when bikes will have been tested, perfectly tuned and prepared, with riders also familiar again with the intricacies of the track and surely well warmed up for a battle, racing will resume with the all-important GP title races.

A further "club day" race will be staged for each class on Sunday afternoon to wrap up the weekend.

Motorcycling Canterbury Inc are no strangers to running highprofile New Zealand Superbike Championship-level events – featuring the traditional elite Superbikes, Supersport 600, Supersport 300 and 650 Pro Twins classes, for example.

Even during the difficult past 24 months of coping with the pandemic, Motorcycling Canterbury impressed in early January by resurrecting national title races for the Formula One, Formula Two, Formula Three and 250cc Production classes. These were national title races that had not been celebrated since they were last raced nearly 10 years ago, back in early 1993.

Motorcycling Canterbury Inc secretary Wendy Ashmore is thrilled to announce that the one-off GP title races for the Superbikes, Supersport 600, Supersport 300, 250 production, 650 Pro Twin, Superlite (F3), 150 Supersport Lightweight Senior and junior GIXXER 150 classes are to be run at Ruapuna on Easter Sunday.

"We're just pleased that we have a team that has worked to ensure we could have bike racing even under COVID restrictions," she said.

"It's been a lot of hard work, running with separate bubbles and

employing security on the gate to check passes, but it was worth it.

"Our January meeting proved how much people were missing it because we had a lot of people, many from the North Island, who came from a long way away to take part. We hope the same will happen over Easter."

Because the April 16-17 meeting is primarily deemed a club day, spectators will be granted free entry, while there is also no requirement to show a vaccine pass this time.

Racing will be transmitted live both days on the CTAS web site.

Riders will not need to upgrade to a championship licence unless they wish to take part in one of the NZGP title races.

A frantic and fatiguing weekend lies in wait for New Zealand’s motorcycle cross-country racing elite over the Easter break.

It’s been two months since the Yamaha-sponsored 2022 New Zealand Cross-country Championships kicked into gear near Marton in February, but now things will really gather momentum.

Rounds two and three will now follow in close order, separated by just two days this coming long holiday weekend, with round two near Pahiatua on Saturday, April 16, and then round three at Dannevirke on Easter Monday, April 18.

This means the four-round

series will nudge past the halfway mark this weekend and it’s therefore also expected that a likely eventual champion will also be revealed.

The venue for the fourth and final round on May 14 or 15 is still yet to be confirmed.

Oparau’s James Scott (Honda) led virtually from start to finish to win the three-hour senior race at Marton’s opening event of this popular series.

It was an extremely tight battle, with Scott taking the chequered flag by just over a minute from Wairoa’s defending national champion Tommy Watts (Yamaha), with Taupo rider Wil Yeoman (Yamaha) finishing third, just one more minute further behind.

staged earlier in the day at Marton, Cambridge’s Jared Hannon led a Kawasaki 1-2 to the top of the podium, edging out Pukekawa’s national junior 250cc motocross champion Tyler Brown, with New Plymouth’s Josh Houghton (Husq-

varna) completing the podium.

MNZ cross-country commissioner Chris Smyth says it will be a “challenging weekend” ahead.

“We’ve got some good venues lined up this year. Pahiatua is completely fresh terrain, so that

should be interesting for the riders.

“The problem over this coming weekend may be moisture. We’ve had quite a bit of rain and it’s pretty damp and slippery plus a storm is forecast to hit the east coast of the North Island.

leaf fall autumn : By Wally Richards A reader from Southland emailed me this week and asked if I could write an article about what to do with autumn leaves.

For some home owners, autumn leaf fall is a curse, just another chore to rake them up and clear the gutters.

For gardeners, leaf fall is a blessing and they gladly collect the leaves to make leaf mould.

Leaf mould is excellent for improving soil, also as a lawn conditioner and mulch over gardens.

It can be used in seed raising mixes and potting mixes.Leaf mould is easy to make, its free with a little H൵ RUW RQ \RXU SDUW DQG LWV D JRRG substitute for peat moss in your gardens. ,I \RX KDYH EDUH YHJHWDEOH RU À RZHU gardens either leave the leaves as a cover over the area or place a good layer over the gardens yourself.

Sprinkle garden Lime over the leaves then spray them with Thatch Busta which will help break down the mat of leaves, getting the gardens ready for spring.

This cover of the leaves will prevent a lot of weeds from growing in the bare gardens.

Now to make your own leaf mould with what is left or what you can collect from else where.

The fast way is to lay some leaves RYHU D À DW DUHD RI ODZQ DQ LQFK RU WZR thick and the with your rotary mower adjusted to the lowest setting run over the leaves with your catcher on.

Repeat this with another layer of leaves and so on.

When your catcher is ready to empty, open a black plastic rubbish bag and put a few handfuls of leaves and any grass clippings into the bottom of the bag.

Sprinkle over the leaves a handful of garden lime and then spray with Thatch Busta at 10 ml per litre. (If you don’t have Thatch Busta but have Mycorrcin, then use it at 15mls per litre.)

Now add a few more handfuls of mashed up leaves and repeat the lime and spraying.

Press down when bag is full to compress the material and then you can add a lot more.

Finally when the bag is full enough WR VWLOO EH DEOH WR WLH R൵ WLH WKH WRS then with a small nail or thin blade screw driver punch lots of small holes all over the bag.

Toss the bag into a sunny out of the way area and leave for a month or so.

After a few weeks pick up the bag, give it a shake and put it back with a GL൵ HUHQW VLGH IDFLQJ XSZDUGV Repeat this about every month or so.The bag will appear to have more space in it as the material coverts to leaf mould.

Within about 6 months you should have a lovely crumbly product that smells good.

The sprinkling of lime is important as the leaves that fall are acidic and you want them sweet so the bacteria will work breaking them down to mould.

The Thatch Busta or Mycorrcin is also very important as they supply the food that increases the microbe populations which speeds up the process.

If you haven’t planted your spring bulbs yet then you should get cracking now.

If you are planting a bed of bulbs then sprinkle the area with Wallys Unlocking the Soil, blood & bone and Wallys BioPhos.

Rake the products into the bed then

plant your bulbs.

Remember to place the tallest JURZLQJ VSULQJ À RZHUV DW WKH EDFN or if a bed in the open place tall growing ones in the centre.

The shortest growing will be in the front.Rather than having a bare bed for a while till the spring bulbs emerge, plant some alyssum and lobelia seedlings.

They will make a nice ground cover over the winter and a lovely EDFN GURS IRU \RXU À RZHULQJ EXOEV Don’t forget to protect tender plants from frost.

Spray with Vaporgard and if there happens to be two or more frosts in a row, night after night then cover plants with frost cloth or sack/ newspaper) Plants like citrus trees in open ground that detest wet feet should be sprayed with Wallys Perfection to prevent root rots in winter.

Remove all mulches as they prevent drying of wet soil which causes root rots and diseases during winter.

Leaving mulches on the soil often leads to loses of plants that cant handle wet feet.

Tiger makes his mark at Augusta without victory There is an ability for Tiger Woods to turn grown men into little boys, giddy with excitement at the slightest prospect of him hitting a golf ball.

Make no mistake, Tiger, who is well past his mesmerising prime, is still the biggest name in golf.

I believe he is the single most important person to their sport in the world.

When Tiger plays, like he did at the Masters at Augusta over the weekend, grown men become excited as if they were children hearing the Mr Whippy ice cream song on a hot summer day.

A year ago, Tiger was in a hospital bed after a high-speed car crash of his own doing, on Monday

he was wearing his traditional red in the fourth round at Augusta.

While many golf fans would have loved to see him pull off a miracle win at the 86th Masters, it was always a lofty and unrealistic expectation.

The leg he badly injured in the car crash combined with little to no competitive golf eventually outdid the 46-year-old.

Woods limped around over the final two rounds, eventually finishing at +13 in a tie for 47th.

Tiger admitted after the event he has days where he “just doesn’t want to do anything” because he’s sore.

He said after his fourth round

that the multiple ice baths and overall recovery work he had to do “sucked”.

To me, it was a fantastic effort for Tiger to make the cut, I’m not a pom-pom cheerleader fan of Tiger, but golf is 1000 times better for him playing and if you want proof, you just have to look at the photo of the gallery of people watching Tiger’s practice rounds at Augusta.

People simply cannot get enough of Tiger Woods.

The golfers today are better, hit further, putt more precisely because that is the level Tiger elevated the game to in his prime.

To see Tiger play golf is a sporting joy which should be appreciated by all fans.

Wainui upset league leaders

The Premier side made the short trip over the hill to face league leaders and undefeated Stop Out in Round 3 of the season. The first half was pretty even with neither side creating a clear cut chance at goal but it was the men in Green and Black that got the breakthrough just before half time. A free kick was delivered into the box where Andrew Olivier tapped it in at the back post to give Wainui the lead going into half time. The second half went up a gear as Stop Out pressed for the equaliser but Isaac Harper doubled Wainui’s lead in the 62nd minute when he got on the end of a Tremaine Rimene cross to put the ball past the goalkeeper with assistance from the crossbar. Stop Out pressed in search of a goal to give them hope but Wainui held on

to seal a 2-0 win and walk away with their first win of the season.

In other results, the reserves lost 3-2 to Stop Out Thirds. The game saw the lead see-saw between the sides but despite goals to Jahkaya Atkinson and Jet Zawada, they were unable to hold on and walked away empty handed. Halfbaked earned promotion to Wellington Division 2 after a successful 2021 season but their campaign started with a heavy 5-2 defeat to North Wellington. The Thirds travelled to Stokes Valley and thanks to 5 goals from Jake McKechnie, they walked away with 3 points with a 7-2 victory. Roundballs were involved in a 7 goal thriller against Wellington United but unfortunately came out on the wrong side.

Despite a hat-trick to Titov-Smith, Wellington United cliched it with a 4-3 win. The Horns played their first ever game in the green and

black out at Wakefield park and unfortunately were unable to have the fairy tale start as they lost 2-0 to Island Bay. In the Masters grades the Undertakers slow start to the season continued as they lost 5-2 to Petone.

The OC’s were struck by sickness and injury during the week which didn’t help their cause as they lost 2-0 to Brooklyn. In the late and final Saturday game, Pasifika finished it off with a thriller as they came from 2-0 down to walk away 3-2 winners over at Petone.

Sunday saw our side travel to the Wairarapa to kick start their season. It was always going to be a tough ask against a very good opponent, but the ladies never gave up. Despite losing 9-0, they played with passion and represented Wainuiomata with pride. A young squad with new faces and a new coach, they will bounce back.

Ulalei Wainuiomata ready for 2022 season Ulalei Netball are almost set to begin the 2022 season with grading games done and dusted in the weekend. Ulalei are looking at entering five teams in the Netball Hutt Valley competition that starts on Saturday 30 April 2022 at the Walter Nash Centre, Taita. The popular Moso’oi social team has attracted much interest resulting in establishing an additional social team, Ulalei Laga’ali (a native Samoa flower used as a decoration and perfuming oil due to their fragrance). “Ulalei is all about inclusion, so it is wonderful to have players from Wainuiomata staying local,” says Lahraine Sagaga, Public Relations.

(“Young Guns”) Carolyn Perry and Eleanor McLeod are excited about the upcoming season with the team of new talent in this year’s team. With players not just from our local high school but coming from Sacred Heart College, Naenae College & St Orans alongside some older heads is making for a great mix of youth & experience. Grading games have been a bag of mixed goodies with a win and a loss on both days. Both coaches are very excited about what’s ahead and with the Atiawa Tournament next in sight during ANZAC weekend, the 2022 season is already proving to be both a competitive & exciting time ahead.
