Looking back over 2020

If there is one thing 2020 showed us is you just never know what is going to happen. It took one world wide event to change any plans made as the new year was chimed in and the Covid pandemic left know one untouched in one way or another.

Cook safely with hangi, umu, and lovo

Fire and Emergency New Zealand wants people to safely use cultural cooking methods over the summer.

Fire and Emergency National Manager Kaupapa Maori Piki Thomas says, “hangi, umu and lovo bring whanau and friends together in the festive season.

“Most of the country has fire restrictions in place because conditions are expected to be hot, dry and windy over the summer months.

“You don’t need a permit for hangi or umu in a restricted season, if you follow our safety tips for preparing underground ovens in the hot dry summer months.

“Make sure your hangi, umu or lovo is at least three metres away from structures like

any part of a building, hedge, shelter belt or any other combustible material.

“Have a water hose handy to put your fire out if it gets out of control.

“Let your neighbours know you’re going to light a fire. Once they know where the smoke is coming from and the fire is under control and being monitored, they won’t feel they need to call the fire brigade.” Mr Thomas says.

Hutt based Glennette Marching Club has cleaned up at the North Island champs in New Plymouth with their under 12 team crowned champion team.

They also won first in the technical section and only missed out in coming first in the display section by one point.

Wainuiomata’s Shakira Abel-McEwen is the youngest member in the club and was part of the winning team.

Her mum Elle says Shakira has been marching for the last years and has a real passion for it.

“She just really enjoys it and even Funeral Home

marches around the house,” Elle says.

“She also put in a lot of time in the lead up to the event practicing for 12 hours over three days.”

Elle says with the costs associated with marching they are now looking for a sponsor to come on board and help out.

Glennette was established over 40 years ago and is a well-known and respected Club in the Greater Wellington Area.

The club provides marching teams for girls from the age of four years old an opportunity to participate in a team sport that provides discipline, structure, routine, self-esteem and helps overall youth development.

Staying safe in the outdoors

Everyone wants Kiwis to have a fun and safe holiday season, especially New Zealand Police and the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council (MSC).

They are both encouraging sound planning for any outdoor adventure, be it camping with the family or tramping our beautiful environment.

A recent increase in interest for the outdoors has the Police and MSC predicting a high number of people will hit the outdoors this holiday season.

Senior Sergeant Matt Wheble, Acting National Coordinator for Search and Rescue says there are a few things you need to take seriously when planning your tramping or camping trip.

“Tell someone where you are going and let them know when to raise the alarm if you don’t return.

Beware of the weather: It’s very unpredictable and can

deteriorate quickly.

Check the forecast and expect changes.

Take the right supplies and equipment and make sure you have the right clothing for the conditions including emergency rations for the worst-case scenario, says Senior Sergeant Wheble.

Take appropriate means of communication and location devices such as a dist ress beacon: If you get into trouble, can you call for help? Who knows where you are? Do you have the right outdoors clothing, enough food and equipment to stay safe until help arrives?

For anyone headed outdoors, a registered distress beacon is the lifeline that can summon help to your location in a life-threatening situation.

Take one with you when you go.

It could save your life or someone else’s. You can rent

or buy a distress beacon and take it with you.

For those who were able to get some time off over Christmas and New Years, I hope you enjoyed a safe and relaxing time after the year we’ve just had. For those who didn’t, like our essential workers and other employees who worked through the holidays, thank you for keeping our city running and I hope you get a well-deserved break soon!

2021 is an important year for our city. Most notably, it is a Long Term Plan year, which sets out Council’s budget and plans for the next ten years. We will be talking to you in the coming months about these plans and what you want for the future of Wainuiomata and our wider city.

Wainuiomata is growing

Greater Wellington is urging the community to check for LAWA website warnings and alerts, following the emergence of a toxic algal blooms at Waipoua River, Te Awa Kairangi – Hutt River and the Pakuratahi River at Kaitoke campground.

Toxic algae is a reoccurring issue for our region’s fresh waterways when water temperatures warm and water levels lower.

For the Waipoua River, Te Awa Kairangi/Hutt River from Birchville to Manor Park, and Pakuratahi River at Kaitoke campground, Greater Wellington advises the public not to swim and to keep dogs on leashes. This is especially important for the Waipoua River Greater Wellington senior environmental scientist, Dr

“Algal mats grow on the rocks in the riverbed and form leathery dark green or black mats, which van break off and accumulate at river edges. As the algal mats dry out they can become light brown colour, and have a distinctive deep earthy or musty smell,” says Dr Heath.

Dogs are mostly at risk because they like the smell and taste of toxic algae. Even a small amount – about the

In Wainuiomata, I’m really looking forward to shopping at the new Countdown in May, seeing our first seniors move into the much anticipated Masonic Retirement Village, and also seeing our local dog owners use the new dog park on Waiu Street when it’s completed mid-year.

Thinking forward to the rest of this year, there’s no denying that it will be full of its own challenges and surprises. However, I am optimistic that 2021 will be a year of progress and positive change for Wainuiomata and our city.

If you have been in contact with toxic algae and are feeling unwell see you doctor or ring Healthline 0800 611 116. Seek urgent medical attention for anyone with breathing difficulties or convulsions. If you think your dog has swallowed toxic algae, take it to the nearest vet immediately.

Chocolate.  When you have had a bad day, what do you do to feel better?

Exercise, probably because I need to do more of it, otherwise chocolate.  What’s one thing on your bucket list?

I really want to return home and live in Samoa for at least a few months to a year to develop literacy programmes, resources, support teachers and schools. Or be a back-up dancer for Beyonce when she goes on tour. But I think I have better chances with the first one.  Who has been the biggest inspiration in your life?

My mother, aunts and grandmother. I was raised by very strong women and is probably why I am admire strong female figues within my own Samoan history like Nafanua or the women of the Mau and modern day thought leaders like Brene Brown  What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been?

Sinalei Reef & Resort in Siumu, Samoa, because it’s where my husband and I got married and this year we will be celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary. Time really does fly!

 What was the last photo you took?

It was of my upcoming MG/YA Book, Teine Samoa, being delivered to my house. I took pictures and videos of opening the

boxes, of the books themselves, the books in different parts of my house and with my family members.

Just a little bit excited and obsessed with this new book launching 10th October.  What thing do you really wish you could buy right now?

A new house by the beach. On a private island.

 What is the best or worst purchase you’ve ever made?

I’m not a big shopper and very resourceful #cheap but when I was in my 20s, I remember buying shoes that looked nice but didn’t really fit me and I still wore them.

Now that I’m older the worst purchases are meals at restaurants that are not worth the money you paid.  Favourite programme currently watching?

I’ve been watching Origins with Scotty Morrison lately and I love watching Pasifika programmes online, like anything from Coconet TV and Oriana TV.  If you had to flee the country, where would you choose to live?

Definitely Samoa or the Cook Islands.

GARDENING THIS WEEK January gardening: By Wally Richards Welcome back to another year of gardening.

The important thing to remember and do this month and over the next two months is to plant winter crops and flowers.

We have optimum growing conditions currently with ample sunlight hours so you can get your winter vegetables started now and flowers also.

Because of the high demand for seedlings it would pay to sow some seeds yourself to get a good start and better results.

Germinated seeds that grow where they are germinated makes for big strong root systems and no damage from transplanting.

The roots get out and down naturally producing excellent results with healthier, stronger plants.

Also I often see that winter type vegetable seedlings do not often arrive in garden shops till later in autumn which is too late to be of any use except to go to seed.

Buy winter variety seeds from either seed stands or from mail order seeds companies such as Egmont and Kings.

As your summer crops are harvested they make room for your winter crops.

In an open garden clear the weeds with a Dutch Hoe which slices the weeds off just under the ground.

If you do not have a Dutch Hoe then down on hands and knees with a sharp carving knife which you use to slice through the weeds just under the soil cutting off at the roots; leaving them in the soil to rot down for food for the next crop.

The decapitated weeds can be composted or just left on the soil surface to break down and feed the soil life.

If the soil surface is hard then break it up with a garden hoe or lightly fork the top few inches.

In a raised garden it is also just a matter of clearing any weeds and scratching the surface to ensure it is friable.

On either of the above the next step is to sprinkle some goodies such as Blood & Bone, Sheep and Chicken manure pellets, chicken manure if available, Wallys Ocean Solids and Wallys Unlocking your soil and Wallys Calcium & Health.

Over this you are going to spread a layer of purchased compost about 30 to 50mm deep.

I prefer Daltons Compost as they do not use Green Waste in their mix which means two things; no chemical herbicide residues to affect your

plants and also no introduction of new weeds including oxalis.

On a raised garden the whole area is covered with the products.

On an open ground garden you are likely to plant in rows so only apply the above to rows about 250mm wide leaving a walkway also about 250mm wide.

That will mean that the walk way or furrow will be a bit lower than the strip you are going to plant in.

This is ideal for watering later on as it’s an old method where you soak the furrow with water to water the plants on either side.

Plants such as brassicas will as they grow spread their leaves out over the furrow helping to prevent evaporation of the water you have applied.

Now into the nice layer of compost you can plant your seeds or seedlings.

It is important that you space them apart so that each plant will have room to grow nicely.

With seeds it is best to put two seeds close together and if both germinate you simply cut the head off the lessor one.

If you are buying seedlings inspect them well for pests and eggs of pests you don’t need to introduce problems into your back yard.

Modern Black Caps surpass 1980s heroics New Zealand is currently the No 1 ranked test team in the world and this is a golden era for the game in this country.

For years, those a little older than myself, (I’m 31) cherished the days of the 1980s when the national team lead

by Richard Hadlee, John Wright and a youthful Martin Crowe won a test series in Australia, something which the present day side has not achieved.

However, I think the current team would prevail in a hypothetical game.

Bruce Edgar and John Wright were the openers back in the day while Tom Latham and Tom Blundell do the job

at present.

I would take one from each decade when formulating my mash-up team.

Latham and Wright to open.No 3 is simple because it’s Kane Williamson, who will be our best ever batsman when his career concludes and he can captain my mash-up XI.No 4 has to be Martin Crowe but rest assured, I’d slot Ross Taylor in at No 5 who easily beats out the likes of Jeff Crowe or even an Andrew Jones of the 1980s era.

No 6 is a tricky spot potentially lacking in depth.

You have the likes of Jeremy Coney

and Lance Cairns up against Mitchell Santner, Colin de Gandhomme and Daryl Mitchell.

It’s tempting to put de Grandhomme in there because he’s a hard hitter who can elevate the run rate and who can be a handy seam option in home conditions.

However, out of respect and tenure, I’ll go Coney to bat at No 6 in the all rounder role.

The wicket keeper battle between Ian Smith and BJ Watling isn’t as close to me as it may be for others.

I’ll have Watling who’s an underrated glove man who scored vital runs

when his team needs it most.

No 8 is Sir Richard Hadlee who will beat out Kyle Jamieson.

Hadlee is our best ever cricketer so is an automatic selection and there just isn’t enough of a sample size yet on Jamieson who could likely force his way into the team with the fullness of time.

To round out the last three spots, I’d have the modern day trio of Tim Southee, Neil Wagner and Trent Boult.

Partnerships in bowling is just as important as batting.

Zealand had than Southee and Boult and every team needs a bowler as Lion-hearted as Wagner who is a threat with the old ball.

The glaring omission is the lack of a front-line spinner but that’s an issue with no clear solution in either team.

So to sum up my mash-up XI would be Wright, Latham, Williamson, Martin Crowe, Taylor, Coney, Watling, Hadlee, Southee, Wagner, Boult.

That is seven players from the 2021 side and four from the 1980s.

Always a fun debate over a drink and I’m not sure if there are many wrong answers.

Whitaker strengthens his grip on extreme series

By Andy McGechan, The points are starting to add up for Wainuiomata’s Jake Whitaker as he seeks to successfully defend his New Zealand Extreme Offroad Championships crown.

The 29-year-old father-ofone took his 2020-model KTM EXC300tpi two-stroke bike to a solid runner-up result at the second round of four in the series near Whangamata on Saturday, crossing the finish line just 34 seconds behind Cambridge’s Dylan Yearbury (Husqvarna TE300).

Helensville’s Tom Buxton (KTM EXC300), New Plymouth’s Tony Parker (KTM XCW300) and Thames rider Jason Davis (Husqvarna TC300) rounded out the top five in the elite Gold Grade on Saturday.

That outcome, coupled with his outright win at the series opener near Porirua two weeks ago, puts Whitaker alone at the top of the 2020 Extreme Off-Road Championships points table, the series now at the halfway stage with just two double-header events to come, in late October and mid November.

However, with riders to discard their worst result from the three North Island rounds of the series and the South Island finale therefore really a must-do event, the title chase is still wide open.

Injury prevented Yearbury from contesting the series opener near Porirua but that matters

only slightly because this will simply become his “discard” event, although the pressure will be on him to perform well at the other rounds.

“I had a good day out on Saturday, but I couldn’t quite get the job done, coming home in second, behind Dylan Yearbury,” said Whitaker.

“I felt great on the bike and enjoyed the track with a good variety of fast sections and some technical stuff thrown in. I had a small lead after the first technical lap. Yearbury caught me on the second, faster loop and pulled a small gap on me. I pulled him back in on the third and final technical lap, but got a stick jammed in my rear wheel and, when I stopped to remove it, he pulled away again.

“The pressure is on Dylan (Yearbury) and on me as well, because we both have to keep performing well if we want to win this. There is plenty of stiff competition this year with Tommy (Buxton), Tony (Parker) and Jason (Davis) going very fast too. Any one of us would win the title really.

“The race on Saturday was stopped at the three-hour mark, but I would have loved another lap.

However, I am happy with how I’m riding and looking forward to the final two rounds.

“I know what I have to do (to win) and just need to go out now and do it.”

Round three of the series is to be a two-dayer in Hawke’s Bay on
