Signatures needed Continued from page 1 Dallas is a key organiser of the Youth Service Union (YSU) and has taken his campaign to the streets of Wellington these holidays to gather signatures so the group can petition minister of health and education Chris Hipkins to look at a members bill on mental health in schools.

“Pretty much what we are asking for in the bill is that more funds are put into schools for teaching about mental health, how to understand it and cope with it and there is often that term used where the government

says they try and set up the fence on top of the cliff by providing counsellors and services but the way we see it is its a nice comfortable landing at the bottom of the cliff,” he says.

“Putting the fence at the top would be actually teaching us how to cope how to deal with it and a lot of people don’t know the differences between bipolar, depression, anxiety and schizophrenia.”

So far he has undertaken three “days of action.”

“Last week we had one in Lower Hutt and one in Petone

doing door to door campaigning and street corner meetings, occasionally we did phone banking and also we visited businesses asking for their support,” Dallas says.

“When someone has a mental health illness they lose a lot of drive to do stuff and I don’t think everyone understands that mental health isn’t just related to someone taking their own life, they lose energy to build connections, they lose energy to go to work and for students they lose the energy to learn,” he says.

At the last count Dallas says

they have around 450 signatures and they a looking to have 2000 signatures to take to the minister to get it taken seriously.

“Once we have those then we can ask him to help push our bill into being submitted and once it is submitted we will need about 4000 to 5000 signatures to help push the house of representatives to allow it to go through,” he says. He has also organised an activity day for the 31st of October at the Wainuiomata Hub with fun and games for children and family starting at 11:30 to 3pm.

Bike Rodeo Healthy Families Hutt Valley and Love Wainuiomata hosted a free Bike Rodeo for tamariki to hone their bike skills.

Central Wainuiomata has been humming with the sounds of cycling thanks to Bike Rodeos organised by Healthy Families Hutt Valley and its partners.

Up until the nationwide lockdown was put in place in response to Covid-19, Wainuomata’s Queen Street had been playing host to weekly Bike Rodeos for cyclists of all ages in the town centre.

Back in April Healthy Families Hutt Valley Healthy City Design Lead, Mark Shanks, said he had been building on the related work around cycling and play being done by Love Wainuiomata.

He says Love Wainuiomata has been doing tremendous work developing the play potential of the Wainuiomata Hub, Queen St and the Queen St Reserve.

“This creative placemaking and activation led to a natural partnership with the Healthy City Design work being done through Healthy Families Hutt Valley.

“This has enabled more activities more often, and the opportunity to scope a longer-term approach to cycling in Wainuiomata.”

The Bike Rodeos had been a great way of building enthusiasm around cycling in Wainuiomata, he said.

Mark says the Bike Rodeo can be a great way to link people into their local cycling hub where there are all kinds of training, events, activities

and opportunities to cycle more, such as regular bike fix-ups, bike skills training, building your own bike, and meeting up for community rides.

He thinks that as the community bought in to the benefits of the Bike Rodeos, they would evolve to become events that individual communities would organise in their own street.

“Bike Rodeos will become more localised with ramps on almost every safe street so children can play close to home with their neighbours.”

“Larger Bike Rodeo events will continue and become more sophisticated with innovative and competitive elements, complement community placemaking, and various cycle promotions and Aidan Cleave takes on the ramp community entertainment attached,” during the Wainuiomata Hub Bike he says.

Autism Onesie day

Every year, Autism New Zealand celebrates World Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month. The month includes the infamous Onesie Wednesday, a day in which many schools and organisations would ask that participants wear their onesies or pyjamas whilst providing a donation for Autism New Zealand.

This year, Onesie Wednesday was held during New Zealand’s level 4 lockdown. Many people participated still, however Autism New Zealand was unable to celebrate on the usual national scale.

COVID-19 has had a substantial financial impact on the not for profit sector, and support for fundraising events such as Onesie Wednesday are greatly appreciated and allows Autism New Zealand to continue to empower the autistic community. This is one reason why Autism New Zealand will be relaunching Onesie Wednesday on the

4th of November.

Olympic Gold Medallist and Autism New Zealand Patron Eric Murray stated that “whilst people are becoming more aware of autism, understanding is still limited in the wider community. World Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month (including Onesie Day) is a fantastic opportunity to dedicate a whole month to this cause. Unfortunately, this year it was interrupted and now more than ever we need to use this relaunch to create increased awareness and understanding within the community.

Several Kiwi celebrities have signed on to share their stories on social media about what they love about autism. Autism New Zealand will also be hosting a live event on the 5th of November which will include a question and answer session with Sportscaster Jason Pine and Olympic Gold Medallist and Autism New Zealand Patron Eric Murray.

Kapa Haka heading to Tawa

In a bid to make the most of what they have learnt and to put on a show Wainuiomata Intermediate Kapa Haka students are heading to Tawa this Friday.

Due to Covid disruptions throughout the year the usual Kapa Haka Festival has not been held so they have decided to keep up the skill and share it with other students.

Mereana Brown deputy principal at the school says they have organised an exchange with Tawa Intermediate just to let the groups perform and share their skills.

“Usually it would be all the intermediates from Wairarapa, Porirua, Wellington and the Hutt Valley,” she says.

“It is a big deal and Raroa were going to host it this year but because of Covid we had to can it.”

Due to Covid the students missed a whole term of practice and it was decided to hold a wananga during the holidays last week to fine tune their skills.

“Usually by now they would have learnt all the songs but because we missed out on all of the practices we had to have a two day wananga,” Mereana says.

They have decided to head to Tawa this Friday for an all day performance with Tawa’s Kapa Haka group.

It will be an opportunity for both groups to share their knowledge and skills.

“We are going to be teaching each other a song. It is like an exchange and then we are going to do our full performance after lunch and what all the intermediates are doing, because they have missed out on the event, they are all going to perform and film and put it on YouTube and share it among the intermediates so everyone gets to see the performances,’ she says

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency has announced the next steps for Te Ara Tupua, the highly-anticipated harbour-side walking and cycling link between Wellington and Lower Hutt, with consent applications to be lodged in the coming weeks.

The Ngā Ūranga to Pito-one section (Ngauranga to Petone) of Te Ara Tupua will be the first Waka Kotahi project considered under the new fast-track consent process, with applications to be lodged this month. At the same time, Waka Kotahi will begin work to select an alliance partner to build the path.

Waka Kotahi has also unveiled updated designs for the project, which incorporate mana whenua aspirations and community feedback, and address the effects of the project and its construction on the coastal environment.

Croquet underway In its 27th year the Wainuiomata Croquet club is underway for another season with local MP’s on hand to celebrate the event.

Margaret Englebretsen club captain and treasurer was on hand to give advice to Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry as he attempted to run the hoop as part of the opening celebrations.

“We are a very hardworking club, and everyone pitches in to help. It’s really nice to have so many people

here to celebrate the opening of the season on such a fine day,” Margaret says.

After a year of disruptions for many sports clubs it was a pleasure to be part of the opening Mayor Campbell Barry says.

“After a year full of challenges, it’s fantastic to be able to hold an event like this, and play some club sport. I’m really looking forward to summer and seeing our communities enjoying the outdoors,” he Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry opens the croquet season watched over by Margaret Englebretsen, club Captain and says.

Church book sale A Mini Book Sale was held at Wainuiomata’s Pioneer Church over the weekend and was a huge success and the committee were delighted with the funds raised, Wainuiomata Pioneer Church Preservation Society member Joyce Lockyer says.

Many locals took the opportunity to view the interior of the restored Church and to sit in the sun and enjoy Devonshire tea.

“Our thanks as always to the community for their support,” she says.

The heritage-listed church on Wainuiomata’s Coast Rd - the third oldest wooden building in the wider Wellington region,

was built from pit-sawn timber in 1866 on land donated by early settler Richard Prouse. The Wesleyan (Methodist) church hosted regular services until the congregation outgrew it and moved to the new St Stephen’s Church in 1957. From 1972 until 2009 the building served as clubrooms for the (now defunct) Wainuiomata Arts Society.

It’s still a consecrated church but is also multi-denominational and is a popular venue for funerals and weddings - four couples have tied the knot there in the last two months alone. The oak trees outside make a fine backdrop for photographs.

Art show for Johnsonville A one day art show gets underway this weekend in Johnsonville featuring a range of artists and styles from painting to pottery.

The show will feature work by established and emerging artists from Wellington region and the Hutt Valley.

Putting on the show has been a wish for Wainuiomata arts promoter Estelle Cainey.

Estelle says the show will be featuring work from artist, painter and poet, Stephanie Sinclaire Lightsmith, along with acrylic, oil and ink drawing as well as ceramics, 3d media and photography.

“Artists are from Wellington and Hutt

Valley. Some are established such as Sophie Gardiner and Dan Wilkinson and others are emerging artists,” Estelle says.

“There is some wonderful colourful work from artist Sue Larsen and there will be an array of artists work. It is a real variety of work for folks to enjoy.”

Estelle has a love of all things art and is hoping the more people who can see an artists work the more likely they are to find a connection.

The event will commence at noon on Saturday at the Johnsonville Community Centre and will finish at 5pm.

What’s Cooking... in Easy Ambrosia Ingredients: • 1 kg yoghurt Choose your favourite flavour • 500 ml Cream • 1 packet marshmallows • 1 punnet strawberries

1. Slice strawberries and cut marshmallows in half.

2. Whip cream till you get soft peaks, then add the yoghurt and mix until its well combined.

3. Add marshmallows and fruit, and then spoon into either a large glass bowl or individual serving bowls or glasses.

4. Leave in fridge to set for a minimum of 4-5 hours (best overnight) or just till marshmallows have softened

Love tennis Wainuiomata By: Gerald Rillstone It was a near perfect weekend to pick up a racquet and have a go at the Wainuiomata Tennis Club Love Tennis event.

The day was aimed at introducing the sport of tennis to a wider audience and engaging with people of all ages.

Whether you were a current or former player, or have never picked up a racquet before the nation wide two day festival

was an opportunity for all to give it a go.

With the aim of tennis to be New Zealand’s favourite sport for participation Love Tennis is a cornerstone of a strategy to get people of all abilities to have a go.

More than 200 tennis clubs across the country were opened free to the public on the weekend between 1pm and 4pm, to encourage people of all ages and skill levels to get involved with the sport.

Not only was there tennis to be played but fun to be had with Adorna Paulik getting her face painted during the Love Tennis event at Wainuiomata Tennis Club.

With the new season on hand and our deciduous fruit trees beginning to wake up; now is a good time to repeat the information on prevention of fruit destroying pests. Apples, pears and walnuts are attacked by codlin moths and for those gardeners in more northern areas that have the guava moth: all pip fruit, stone fruit, citrus and nuts are attacked. So let’s start with the two moths (Codlin and Guava) how do they at night find where to lay their eggs so that their baby grubs/ caterpillars will have a good food source when they hatch out?

The smell of ripening fruit is how they find the ideal egg laying place. No they don’t lay their eggs in the flowers as there is nothing there when the grubs hatch or if there is the fruit is too small to be sufficient food for a grub to reach maturity.

Once a codlin or guava grub gets inside your fruit you are too late to do anything. What we must do is prevent the grubs from entering the fruit which is easy to achieve by regular fortnightly sprays of Wallys Super Neem Oil with Raingard added.

No need to spray the tree just the fruit so that there is a film of Neem Oil on the fruit, protected from washing off in the rain with Raingard. Works perfectly on all fruit treated and not being a poison no harm to yourself as the chemical insecticides can be.

But the moths have to lay their eggs to start with and to do that they have to find the fruit by smell at night. So what if we create a smell at the tree which camouflages the smell of the fruit? I have suggested this in previous articles by using Wallys Neem Tree Granules or Powder on the ground under the tree and by hanging little bags made out of curtain netting in the tree with Neem Granules and Powder in the bags.

Hang one at each of the cardinal points (North South East & West).

This creates a smell barrier higher up to confuse the moths and they do not know there is a tree there with their host fruit.

Currently because of Lockdowns in India there is a very limited amount of Neem Granules and Powder available and what is left is been rationed out in 1kg pouches, till fresh stocks arrive

next month.

Moth Balls were banned in NZ a couple of years ago because some kids these days think that anything round must be a lolly and moth balls are not. One of the most used chemicals for moth balls was naphthalene and naphthalene is available as Wallys Cat Repellent in flakes, in a Govt approved container with Govt approved label and is the only naphthalene legally available, to be used as a Cat Repellent of which it is about 95% effective in deterring cats.

Naphthalene flakes applied to a dry area where it is not rained on will slowly evaporate over several weeks keeping most cats away from that area. But if rained on or watered on, they will disappear very quickly and have to be replaced. To protect the flakes from rain I have suggested taking 2 litre plastic milk bottles, cutting the bottom off, removing cap from other end, laying it on its side (handle up) with a stone inside to prevent blowing around and then about a table spoon of flakes inside the bottle. So besides deterring cats you could put one or two

milk bottles as described above under the fruit trees when the fruit have formed to deter both cats and moths. Then you can make a trap for killing moths by taking a 2 litre plastic milk bottle and cutting a 5cm hole in the middle of the bottle on the wide side, half way up on each side of the bottle.

This should be hung away from the tree on a stake.

Then make up the Attractant: Recipe: 1-cup Apple Cider Vinegar, 1/3-cup Dark Molasses, 1/8-teaspoon Ammonia, 6 drops of Dishwashing Liquid Add enough water to make 1-1/2 quarts of Attractant.

1/8 cup of this Attractant is placed into the bottom of each trap soon after bud break. This attractant smells a bit like nectar from flowers which moths need for energy. They are attracted and drown preventing them from laying their eggs in your trees.

Using a trap or two plus over riding the smell of your tree’s fruit and a coating of Neem oil on the fruit you could be eating a lot of perfect fruit this year.

Australia were accurate, and eager, sometimes overeager at the breakdown.

If the All Blacks aren’t careful, they will lose at Eden Park and the Bledisloe Cup could be on the move for the first time since 2002.

Hoskins Sotutu and Caleb Clarke must start this week.

Questions must be asked why the All Blacks did not attempt a drop

goal deep in injury time.

The midfield needs work.

Jack Goodhue was a passenger and Ioane was found out time after time.

Anton Lienert-Brown is the longterm mid-field maestro the team needs.

It was a mediocre performance, one non-Waikato people associate with new coach Ian Foster.

Poor Sam Cane does not have the public onside either, with people wanting Ardie Savea at no 7 and

Hoskins Sotutu at the back of the scrum.

Those people, myself included won’t get their wish.

I’d much rather have Sam Whitelock as captain.

It’s clear the public is divided on the current direction of the team and this was anything but a unifying performance.

The question remains can Ian Foster let his own loyalty to Waikato players and Lomu-term All Blacks

aside and bring in the guys who will be new but on the way up.

There is always a winner and a loser with any draw, a team that feels better and a team which feels worse about it.

Make no mistake, The All Blacks got lucky with a draw, they were the winners.

Call it rust, call it the first game in a while but make no mistake, The All Blacks need a lot of improvement in just seven days.

Racing them requires an immense amount of skill and courage and coming up this Labour weekend, October 24-25, it’s the Duckmanton AG-sponsored 2020 New Zealand ATV Championships, to be staged near Timaru and hosted by the Canterbury ATV Association.

The popular Backflips Dirt Farm ATV facility at Pleasant Point, on the outskirts of Timaru, is always well-prepared and will provide an ideal battleground for the pilots of these sleek but powerful brutes.

Defending champion in the premier grade is Stratford’s Camo Keegan and it will be hard not to rate him as favourite to win again this Labour Weekend.

Keegan actually has five national title wins to his credit in the premier grade – having won the title for the first time in 2013 and then scoring four in a row, winning in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 – so he knows he’ll have a target on his back this time around.

In addition to his younger brother Scott Keegan, the national ATV champion in 2015, others who could command centre stage in one class or another include Otorohanga’s Shane Robinson, Christchurch trio Craig Cox, Taylor Graham and George Doig, Amberley’s Angus Parish, Gisborne’s Ian Newman and Stratford’s Kim Reid, among others.

Multi-time former champion Ian Ffitch, from Amberley, returns to the race track this year, now fully recovered from the shoulder injury that prevented him from racing the nationals last season and he’s always worth counting on for a podium result.

Eltham’s Shane Hurliman will be eligible to race in the veterans’ class for the first time this season, the dairy farmer turning 40 just days before the event, and he reckons it may be his best chance of winning because he’ll be “a young one in the vets class ... and every year that passes after this I’ll only be older and slower”.

Motorcycling New Zealand ATV commissioner Dennis Cox said he was looking forward to another great weekend of racing.
