After years of hard work a new adventure is on the horizon for Shane who has just signed with Triumph to race a Triumph Street Triple RS as a factory rider in this year’s British Supersport Championship.

The Supersport Championship acts as a feeder series to the British Superbike Championship, arguably one of the world’s most competitive two-wheeled domestic series’.

Last year, Richardson raced in the National Superstock Championship. A season that taught him how vital self-belief is when times get tough.

“I really had to show to myself and others I deserved to be here and was still on the up, simply to warrant sacrificing so much for the financial input that comes with it,” he says.

This season, Richardson remains with the Astro-JJR Racing family. And along

with a jump to the Supersport series, Richardson also has to learn a new bike.

“People have asked if I will need to change my riding for the Triple but there are changes between every bike.”

“We’ve got a great team and a good pre-season lined up and we’ll work through it all.”

There is always a hint of nervousness when predicting how competitive a new bike will be once race day rolls around.”

Shane also has a strong faith in the team around him.

“At Triumph, when we all got together for the first time, to see the size of the effort around you as a rider, it just feels like a really good place to be.

“I’m very excited and quietly confident.”

Other highlights of Shane’s career so far have been his first competitive outing on a 1000cc superbike in 2018.

Marine litter is a huge problem that is recognised globally, but one that is difficult to quantify.

Litter is often brought indirectly to the sea by rivers, sewage, storm water or winds, polluting ocean ecosystems and harming both wildlife and humans.

Hutt rents up $200 per week Hutt families are under increasing pressure and the housing crisis is worse than ever under Labour, List MP based in Hutt South Chris Bishop says .

“New data out today shows that the median rent for houses in Lower Hutt was only $375 in October 2017 when Labour came to office. In December 2021 the median rent is now $575. This is a staggering increase of $200 per week under Labour, meaning Hutt renters are now paying $10,000 extra per year just for housing.

“This comes at a time when we have a cost of living crisis, with inflation at a 30-year high and outstripping wage growth by double.

“Labour came to power promising to fix the housing crisis in the Hutt. The promised 300 KiwiBuild homes have never arrived. Instead, the following has happened: The average house in the Hutt is now over a million dollars - $1,035,592 Median rents up from $375 to $575 per week since October 2017 An increase from 198 clients on the Social Housing Register in September 2017 to 588 clients in September 2021 $25.6 million has been spent since December 2017 in Lower Hutt alone on emergency housing “Many Kiwis are struggling to keep up with the increasing costs at the supermarket and the petrol station, let alone the

skyrocketing rents. They are paying the price for ill-advised and naive housing policies of the Labour Government.”

“National has sensible solutions to our housing disaster in the Hutt including: s Reducing the land, building and compliance costs that drive up the cost of new housing s Increasing long-term rental options with our Build-to-Rent Housing Bill that would unlock investment in purpose-built rental properties s Boosting social and affordable housing by backing community housing providers s Ensuring everyday Kiwis can get mortgages, by fixing the Consumer Credit Contracts and Consumer Finance Act which has cut access to bank lending; and s Assisting first-home buyers onto the housing ladder with Help-toOwn schemes “National is determined that New Zealand can once again be a place where hardworking, aspirational, everyday people can see a path to home ownership. Where Labour has failed, National will deliver.”

“We are happy that there will be a designated commissioner to investigate issues within the aged care sector, especially in the home and community support services where we are aware that numerous Grey Power members feel they are not well supported to age at home with dignity. We also look forward to the commissioner’s support in advocating for more carers and nurses in the sector and the new commissioner’s background in aged care and the health system bodes well for older people. We wish her the very best as New Zealand’s first age care commissioner.”

Road safety around schools According to the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), Pedestrians are most at risk of being injured at school peak times (7am - 9am and 2pm - 4pm).

Because of this, the Hutt City Council run a number of road safety projects and activities involving primary and secondary schools.

Streets around schools are made as safe as possible around

schools by creating safer active transport routes, supporting school road patrols, creating safe drop-off/pickup locations, managing and enforcing safe parking on nearby streets, improving safety at crossing points, and introducing 40km/h school safety zones.

The speed limit around schools is 40km/h speed limit on school days (Monday to Friday). This

limit must be followed at least 35 minutes before the start of school and 20 minutes at the end of the school day.

Active travel is walking, biking, scooters and skateboards to move around the city.

The couincil encourages active travel for trips to and from school to reduce traffic chaos around school entrances. Active travel also has benefits to children’s

health and well being and helps reduce carbon emissions.

The focus is also on active travel during Movin’ March and they encourage all primary and intermediate schools to join this region-wide initiative.

Free bike skills training is available to Hutt City schools with the training delivered by Greater Wellington Regional Council’s Pedal Ready Programme.

The nationwide move to red in the COVID protection framework has prompted Metlink to postpone its upcoming free fares weekend originally planned for March.

The decision was announced at today’s meeting of the Transport Committee.

Scott Gallacher General Manager of Metlink said he wants to keep the public safe and the trial to be a success and that means postponing the trial to a time when the network is operating under optimal conditions.

“A slightly extended timeframe gives the council a great opportunity to carefully consider the trial’s eventual results and the positive effects it could have on several strategic objectives.

Namely, mode shift and improved network accessibility,” he says.

New Te Matauraura o Whenuangaro Centre A new multipurpose facility, Te Matauraura o Whenuangaro, in Te Whiti Park, was formally blessed at a dawn ceremony on Saturday 29 January.

The space, which takes its name from The Enlightenment of Whenuangaro, the original name for Waiwhetu is founded on the cultural practices of the local Te Ati Awa people and is intended as a centre for education, culture, sport and community development.

First discussed in 2009, Te Matauraura o Whenuangaro is a partnership between Te Runanganui o Te Ati Awa ki Te Upoko o Te Ika and Hutt City Council.

The newly unveiled building sits alongside Te Whiti Park playing fields, incorporating new changing rooms and toilets alongside the educational and community space.

“Te Whiti Park stands here at the feet of the mighty Pukeatua.

This multipurpose facility on the park will be a place to enhance community wellbeing through education, sharing information, community meetings and events.

Te Matauraura o Whenuangaro will strengthen the connection of young people to their whakapapa

and provide new opportunities to grow the holistic wellbeing rangatahi in Te Awakairangi,” says Kura Moeahu, Chairman of the Board for the R nanga.

“This will be a welcoming place where our young people will gain the confidence and skills to take the next steps on their chosen journey to work or further study.”

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry who attended the blessing says, “I’m really pleased that we have been able to support this project, and it demonstrates the real progress we’re making to strengthen our partnership with Mana Whenua and deliver better outcomes through education to our community.”

The teaching of Te Reo and Tikanga will be a major focus of the space, which will also serve the community as a base for school holiday programmes and after-school homework sessions, for tamariki, while rangatahi will be supported to achieve their educational goals at a tertiary level, through a partnership with WelTec. The sharing of cultural knowledge such as Maori arts, kapa haka and cultural wananga will

play a central role at Te Matauraura o Whenuangaro, and sporting culture will continue to be celebrated

I have not paid much attention to it.

I am all for protesting but this doesn’t seem like any protest I have been to.

I think they need to calm down and go home.

I do sympathise with the mandate protesters. It is tough but they need to respect others choices as well.

I don’t agree with what they are doing but it hasn’t had any affect on me.

I haven’t even thought about it. I don’t go into the city that much.

Critical worker status for vets The New Zealand Veter ina r y Association (NZVA) has welcomed the announcement that vets and other animal welfare professionals are now included in the Government’s critic a l wo r k e r c a t e go r y.

The decision allows people in animal welfare roles to register as a critical worker, meaning they can continue working if they are a close contact of someone with COVID-19, provided they return daily negative Rapid Antigen Tests. Critical workers will still need to isolat e out sid e of work .

NZVA Chief Executive Kevin Bryant says the decision gives already stretched veterinary teams more certainty about their availability to treat animals as the Omicron outbreak continues.

“We are very pleased with yesterday’s news. It puts vets in a much stronger position to reduce any disruption that Omicron may have on their services,” he says.

“Veterinary teams have been working exceptionally hard to meet their clients’ needs during the current vet shortage. They now have the mechanism in place that will help to keep essential services operating when Omicron becomes widespread.”

Under the rules, animal welfare professionals can now register with the Government that they are a critical worker.

Bryant is encouraging veterinary practices to register their entire teams, which will allow veterinary nurses, technicians and other essential workers in their clinics to be included in the scheme.

Dear Editor, In a way I am fortunate to have been a paid gardener for parks and recreation In the 1970’s.

I started work straight from Schooling in December 1969 no holidays except the Stat’s until the next December. In those years gardening was manual labour shovels and spades to turn over the flower Beds in Riddiford Gardens now known as civic gardens.

I learnt alot about plants I didn’t waste my years. I learnt a lot from my foreman Jim Mason. He was like another James Stirling very clued up in horticulture. Now in my retirement years I grow my own cucumbers,

pumpkins tomatoes onions, carrots.

Plus I like my Babaco plants and Mountain Paw paws.

If you wish to grow your own Veggies it takes dedication and efforts to get the perfect results . I have always loved the outdoor life in the garden a bit like David Attenborough I like watching different insects. By the way I have heard many people class spiders as insects even on fly spray cans they are classed as insects. Insects have 6 legs, Spiders have 8. That shows how ignorant some people are.

Spiders kill flies most people these days spray with fly sprays. Those big spiders are more scared of you than you are of them. Nature looks

after it’s own. Man keeps interfering with nature and then nature fights back. Nature should be respected.

Now man was getting worried because Bee’s were getting less.

Can you see why?

Incsecticides yeah poisons like that dam 1080 stuff man is killing nature with his own lack of knowledge.

Over in Aussie Kangaroo’s are protected so are the possums. In the UK Hedgehogs are protected.

My favourite creature is the Humble Bumble Bee. Friendly and placid.

More safe houses needed Dear Editor, It should come as no surprise that reports coming out of America are linking more gangs to Sex Trafficking. The main reason being that the heat from Police on existing revenue streams makes it attractive as the market for sex trafficking is increasing and

with corrupt people in high places it is hard stop and few prosecutions take place, so profits are rarely confiscated Any MP who is anti - the sex slave trade and supports gangs and their existence in their current form is at best hypocritical and need to step out in the real world. Gangs need to be

given a final ultimatum and more safe houses set up for those who wish to leave. Also those who think it OK to let children grow up in criminal gangs need to read this.

Share the space campaign Hutt City Council is encouraging residents and visitors to use Lower Hutt’s shared paths and roads considerately this summer.

A campaign promoting the considerate use of footpaths, shared paths, cycleways and roads in Lower Hutt, will appear on Council social media channels, billboards and bus backs over the coming weeks.

The campaign coincides with the time of year these paths are used the most and raises awareness of looking out for others by being patient and predictable.

“Lower Hutt has a number of accessible cycleways and shared paths and it’s important we can all enjoy them confidently. We’re encouraging people to share the space, be patient and predictable when moving around our city,” Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell

Barry says .

“We want to ensure that our tamariki grow up feeling comfortable moving around our city. We all move at different speeds and in different ways, so please remember to pass slower travellers safely, watch out for trip hazards like dog leashes, and give people the space they need.”

Back to School The campaign coincides with the return of tamariki to schools, encouraging the use of paths as a way of being active while promoting awareness of sharing the space.

There are some key tips that can help you share our spaces in Te Awakairangi: Share the space, be patient and predictable Look out for others - on the road, the footpath, or the cycleway - if you’re

moving faster than the person you’re passing, make sure to slow down while overtaking and give as much space as you can.

Be patient - it is scary to be passed closely by fast-moving things that are bigger than you. It’s even worse for children still a bit wobbly on their wheels, and for older people who haven’t heard you coming. Slow down, give space, and let them know you’re coming if you can.

If you’re moving slowly with friends, make sure to leave space to let others pass.

Be predictable - hold your line of travel, and if you’re turning, make sure to signal and give others warning that you’re about to change direction.

Minimum Wage rise welcome E tu says the Minimum Wage rise to $21.20 from 1 April is excellent news – an increase that’s much needed to make sure the wages of low-paid workers keep pace with inflation.

The 6 percent increase corresponds with the change to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 5.9 percent from the year ended December 2021.

E tu Assistant National Secretary Annie Newman says the increase will benefit Aotearoa’s lowest-paid workers, including many essential workers who continue to provide vital services during the ongoing Covid crisis.

“The Minimum Wage has gone

up in correspondence with inflation, which is great to see,” she says.

“It also recognises that we need to pay workers properly for the work they do. Essential work shouldn’t be, and doesn’t need to be, poorly paid.”

However, Annie says E tu will continue to push to see the Minimum Wage rate brought into line with the Living Wage rate of $22.75.

“We believe that this should be the minimum wage floor for all workers.”

The union is also actively campaigning for Fair Pay Agreements, which will establish standards across whole industry groupings, as well as the Government’s proposed

social unemployment insurance scheme, to become law.

“The rise of the Minimum Wage is a great start. However, we know that to create truly decent working environments for all New Zealanders, we still need to go further.

“Implementing Fair Pay Agreements, along with a social unemployment insurance scheme, will lift working conditions to a standard not seen for decades in Aotearoa,” Annie says.

Study into assisted dying The first New Zealand study into assisted dying since it became legal is being carried out by researchers from Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.

Lead researcher Dr Jessica Young, a post-doctoral research fellow at the University’s Te Kura Tatai Hauora— School of Health, says it will be the first research into the experiences of people applying for assisted dying under

the End of Life Choice Act. As part of the study, Dr Young plans to interview people with terminal cancer who have started the process of applying for assisted dying.

Cummins and co let Langer languish Times, they are a changin’ and people like Justin Langer do not seem to fit in these days.

Langer’s messy exit as Australian cricket coach after almost four years of tremendous success goes to show being a coach has never had less power than in 2022.

Players run sport now, they call the shots and there seems little space for the tough but fair authoritarian coach.

Winning used to be the only deodorant a coach needed to keep his job for a long time.

The Alex Ferguson’s and Bill Belichick’s of the world gained job stability in an unstable work environment by coaching their teams to constant success.

Langer’s departure proves that results are no longer the be-allend-all.

Now you must relate to your players on more than just a sport level.

An element of mate-ship must be had.

The players have clearly won out when it comes to Langer. His intensity clearly wore thin within

the playing group despite their Twenty20 World Cup and Ashes success.

This has also been a black mark against the captaincy of Pat Cummins.

When he was named leader prior to the start of the Ashes, there was renewed hope that Australia now had a decent bloke lead their team for the first time in a long time.

However, Cummins has proved spineless in recent weeks.

He has been evasive and doubletalking in media interviews, he’s

taken swipes at past Aussie players who have backed Langer and staunchly backed his own players which is all well and good but not explained why.

Cummins has talked himself into being part of the problem instead of being the catalyst for a solution.

If the players don’t like Langer or don’t want him in charge anymore, they should come out and say that.

Instead Cummins has talked in riddles and rhymes and only reinforced what the rest of the world thinks about Australian

cricket.

Langer took over after sandpaper-gate, a low point in Australian sport and rejuvenated the team back to being a global powerhouse.

I’m sure the former test opener won’t be short of job offers.

The situation should be a warning to all coaches everywhere.

Winning is not everything anymore, you must get on with the players too.

You’ll soon be out of a job if you don’t.

Former athletics champ back Former Wainuiomata athletics club member Thomas Waldrom has returned to his throwing roots.

The 38-year-old powerhouse number eight may be best known for his accomplishments on the rugby field, but in his youth he was an athlete of some pedigree, good enough to win discus gold at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships.

After rugby retirement he has once more returned to athletics and is relishing his time as a competitor, coach and team manager with his connection to Lower Hutt Amateur Athletics Club (LHAAC) and the Solapower Throwing Academy.

“I returned to New Zealand three years ago and once I realised the Lower Hutt club was still going, I

said to my boys (Troy and Kade) to give athletics a go and, like me, they fell in love with it,” he says.

As a student he went on to win junior boys gold medals in discus and shot at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships before in 2000 he secured discus gold and shot and hammer silver medals in his final year as a high school athlete.

Boasting a discus PB around “53 or 54m” and a shot best of 13m or 14m he had big potential, however, as a rising star on the rugby field at the age of 18 he quit athletics to focus on the 15-a-side code.

He enjoyed a successful rugby career in both New Zealand and later England, where he won five

England international caps and played in the English Premiership with Leicester and Exeter, but that passion for athletics never dwindled.

“I really like the fact athletics is an individual sport and you compete against yourself,” he says. “It is a sport which is about you and how you perform, and I think that’s why I enjoyed it so much.”

He is now fully immersed in the sport in which his two sons, Troy, 12, and Kade, 10, are actively involved as throwers.

He helps out with coaching at the Sola Power Throwing Academy – where both sons attend – and he is happy “to give back” to a sport which gave him so many cherished memories.

Green Light for National Maori Netball Tournament After a two-year hiatus, the 2022 National Maori Netball Tournament has been confirmed to go ahead and will be held at the CET Arena in Palmerston North from the 15th to the 17th of April.

The decision has not come without challenges for the Aotearoa Maori Netball Oranga Healthy Lifestyles (AMNOHL) National Executive who together with this year’s host waka – Ikaroa ki te Raki Maori Netball – will run the tournament as a My Vaccine Pass (MVP) only event, regardless of which traffic light setting the country will be at come Easter weekend.

National Assistant Coordinator, Parekura Cribb says the new Covid-19 Protection Framework (CPF) made it possible for events to take place at all stages with different restrictions at the Red, Orange, and Green traffic light settings. Strong public health measures will be in place including the requirement for all attend-

ees 12 years, 3 months and over to be vaccinated; and the potential for a split venue if the country or hosting region is at Red. It is expected that the CPF will provide waka attending, some degree of certainty in their planning. Cribb highlighted the impact of cancellations on whanau well-being with many suffering significant financial losses due to non-refundable travel and accommodation costs when the country first went into lockdown in 2020.

This in turn led to increased mental and emotional stress and subsequently prompted an earlier decision from the executive to cancel the 2021 tournament.

The National Maori Netball Tournament draws over 2,500 players, volunteers and spectators annually across five age groups and ten Maori netball regions throughout the country (known as netball waka). Even more numbers are involved through the delivery of healthy lifestyle mes-

saging in the regions using netball as the vehicle. Cribb says “That is our point of difference. We provide kotiro and their whanau with access to information, resources and support on a range of health related kaupapa using

netball as the vehicle, so that they can make informed choices for themselves and incorporate new and improved practices into their daily lives. We provide opportunities for whanau to engage with te reo Maori me ona tikanga, to

establish and renew connections with kaumatua, marae, hapu and iwi. These are really important determinants of well-being for our whanau. On top of all that, we also play some pretty fantastic netball too.”
