Newland College make national environmental final The team has been working on their proposal since September last year and continued to meet regularly during senior exams and over the summer holidays.

They then made the top six schools in New Zealand before being named in the final last week.

Jayden says the team is thrilled to make it this far.

“Over the exam period and summer break, we’ve worked really hard to bring our ideas to reality, constructing a product which we

then submitted for phase two,” he says.

“Now, we are refining our pitch, preparing for the final pitch session, which will be judged by industry experts, some from Callaghan Innovation, the US Embassy, NZ Space Agency, Rocket Lab and more.

“Our project has included researching, programming, machine learning and more methods to extrapolate coral health data, aiming to battle the effects of climate change.”

“None of us are specialising in climate change or corals but we found it very interesting.”

The team started looking at how carbon dioxide in the ocean affects the coral.

“Now we are using machine learning, looking at all the current data which factors in wind speeds, how fast the ocean is moving and even understanding what colour the ocean is and we are able to extrapolate that into the future and look at coral bleaching which is how corals die.”

Tomorrow’s final involves a question and answer session with the judges before a public business-style public pitch.

“We’ve really enjoyed the experience and it has made us better students.

“Because we are all friends, we often hang out together but now those times have turned into work time too.

“We’ve all learnt a lot and while it would be great to win, we’re already really proud of how far we have come,” Jayden says.

Wild weather lashes northern suburbs The unseasonably wet and wild weather left North Wellington residents scrambling over the weekend.

In Glenside Village, several large willows fell across the stream which forced several residents of the flats in the suburb to crawl over the fallen trees, across the flooded stream to safety.

The Newlands Volunteer Fire Brigade responded to several flooding calls in Newlands and Paparangi on Sunday and fallen scaffolding at a Newlands address.

Two community portable pumps were also in use as the impact of Cyclone Dovi became clear.

Main Road in Tawa had to remain shut overnight earlier this week after a slip continued to get worse outside Grasslees Reserve.

Efforts were made to try to stabilise it.

inbrief news Free fares postponed The nationwide move to red in the COVID protection framework has prompted Metlink to postpone its upcoming free fares weekend originally planned for March. The decision was announced at today’s meeting of the Transport Committee.

Scott Gallacher General Manager of Metlink said he wants to keep the public safe and the trial to be a success and that means postponing the trial to a time when the network is operating under optimal conditions.

Wadestown Fair aiming for 2023 The decision has been made to cancel the 2022 Wadestown Fair due to the progress of the Covid Omicron outbreak in New Zealand. Organisers hope the fair will return in 2023.

Wellington’s number two bus route quietly goes electric Noisy diesel buses are a thing of the past on the number two bus route, the first in Wellington to be fully decarbonised following the arrival of the capital’s 55th electric bus.

Greater Wellington chair Daran Ponter said the council’s public transport wing, Metlink, was now more than halfway to its goal of having 108 electric vehicles (EVs) on the road by December 2023.

“Metlink can be confident of reaching the target, making 22 percent of its buses electric by the end of next year,” Ponter said. “That’s one in every five.”

“When all 108 are in service, they’ll reduce Greater Wellington’s carbon emissions by 17 percent; a massive step towards council being carbon neutral by 2030.”

Transport Committee chair Roger Blakeley said having more than 50 EVs strengthened Metlink’s status as an international leader in electric public transport.

“With electric trains, an electric harbour ferry and electric buses, we are driving the region towards a 40 percent increase in public and active transport modes by 2030,” Blakeley said.

“Greater Wellington is setting the example for other local authorities by rising to meet the climate emergency.”

Commitments by bus service operators NZ Bus and Tranzurban (part of the Tranzit Group) established the 108 EV goal. NZ Bus has 37 on the road with another 30 on order while Tranzurban has 18 in service and 23 on the way.

Metlink infrastructure and assets manager Fiona Abbott said the EV fleet would grow beyond the target, with operators Mana and Uzabus also planning to acquire EVs. “Between them at least three more are in the pipeline. Mana is also committed to running 10 EVs on the new airport express bus service.”

To power its EVs, NZ Bus charges overnight using off-peak electricity.

From 10pm, its single-deck buses are connected to a Smart Charging System at the operator’s Kilbirnie depot and by 4am, they are ready for a full day of service.

Tranzurban also charges overnight at its Grenada and Rongotai depots but can fast-charge its electric double-decker buses during the day.

Wellington City Council is proposing to change the speed limit on Hawkins Hill Right of Way to make it safer for all users.

Wellington City Council is proposing to reduce the speed limit on Hawkins Hill Right of Way from 50km to 30km to make it safer for all users.

The Right of Way is used by cars, pedestrians, and cyclists for various purposes including access to the Brooklyn Wind Turbine and to private property for the residents nearby.

The Right of Way is a narrow passage with lots of twists and turns, making it dangerous at times for shared users. The speed reduction was first proposed at the November 2018 City Strategy Meeting as a way to make it safer.

Once feedback has been gathered, the proposal will go to Pnjroro HƗWepe | Regulatory Processes Committee in May 2022 for a decision.

While it is not a legal road, the speed limit on the Right of Way is to give an indication of what is a safe speed to travel.

I have not paid much attention to it.

I am all for protesting but this doesn’t seem like any protest I have been to.

I think they need to calm down and go home.

I do sympathise with the mandate protesters. It is tough but they need to respect others choices as well.

I don’t agree with what they are doing but it hasn’t had any affect on me.

I haven’t even thought about it. I don’t go into the city that much.

Khandallah Pool future Dear Editor Excellent news to read that the future is secured for Khandallah Pool (Independent Herald 10/02/2022).

The investment in the Khandallah Pool will mean that many more generations of people will be able to access the pool and facilities.

Khandallah Pool is very much a local icon and attraction and I have many happy memories as a child and young person visiting the pool over the hot summer months.

Last week Karori West Brownies did a litter pick at Karori Park.

The girls, aged seven-to-nine-yearsold were surprised to find so much litter.

Lolly and chip wrappers, masks and plastic cutlery were found on the

ground, but also high up in the bushes and trees.

The girls learnt that the rubbish could end up blowing into the stream which then leads out to the ocean where marine life could end up eating it and getting sick.

Battery recycling trial powering ahead A new recycling scheme being trialled by Wellington City Council is set to give used household batteries a new lease of life and prevent them from ending up in the landfill.

Wellingtonians can now drop off their used batteries for free at seven Wellington City Council locations, says Mayor Andy Foster.

“This is the latest in a range of initiatives Council is taking to reduce waste volumes, see more precious resources reused and make our city cleaner, healthier and enable us to better manage waste with a growing population.

“It’s also another step towards aligning with our zero carbon targets and with making good decisions for future generations,” adds Mayor Foster.

Collection points have been set up at Island Bay Community Centre, Karori Library, Kilbirnie Library, Newlands Community Centre, Tawa Community Centre, Te Awe Library (CBD) and the Tip Shop at the Southern Landfill.

Chair of the Wellington Regional Waste Management and Minimisation Plan Join Committee, Councillor Laurie Foon says that batteries contain a lot of useful resources, such as metals, and recycling them contributes towards the Council’s vision of a circular economy.

“Unfortunately, as well as the good stuff, batteries also contain harmful chemicals which can leach into soil and waterways, so it’s important to keep them out of the landfill.

“The Solid Waste Management and Minimisation Bylaw (2020) aims to address this, and under the bylaw disposing of used batteries in kerbside rubbish is no longer permitted.”

Most household batteries are accepted – a full list can be found on our website and on signage at the collection points. You just need to tape the terminals of any lithium batteries to prevent leaking, but all others can just be dropped as they are at the collection points.

The batteries will then be diverted from the landfill and the components will be separated for re-use, recovery and re-processing.

Domestic quantities of up to 20kg of batteries can be disposed of free of charge.

But car batteries and leaking or damaged batteries aren’t accepted for the recycling trial or in kerbside rubbish. These should be taken to the Southern Landfill Hazardous Waste drop-off where they can be disposed of safely.

The Sustainability Trust’s EcoCentre in central Wellington also accepts batteries for recycling.

Weathertight? YIP! Hey Everyone! What crazy weather we just had. Nature has a wonderful ability to impress, mesmerise and captivate our interest – but also cause a lot of destruction! Following the downpour. Consulting a local building inspector, he shared some words of wisdom, that ‘all houses leak,’ even new houses, it is just a matter of when and if the maintenance was done properly.

Contrary to popular belief, leaks do not come gushing through the cladding, rather at where different materials ‘join’ together, these are commonly windows, doors, roofs, penetration junctions, gutters, etc. So here are a few tips to check if your property has survived the storm! s Gutters/Drains - make sure you check that the gutters haven’t sagged and clear of any debris and blockages. Do the same for any drains you may have too. Thus avoid water overflowing in. s Leaks – This is one you need to be a lot more proactive about, by the time you see the leak inside, it can be a little late. Pop up into your roof and look for wet patches / staining. Other signs to look for inside, are bulged skirting, gib, ceiling tiles, window framing and staining on the ceiling. Over time you could even see new mould spots. s Temporary fix – if your insurance company or repair person is backlogged on jobs, then the first step is to minimise where it is coming from, waterproofing tape is a great start (if you don’t have any handy, duct tape can suffice for now).

Following that, drying out the house is a priority. Easiest way is to heat up the property as close to 30 degrees as you can, this can draw out moisture from the materials – while this is happening have a process to dehumidify the moisture. A dry

home is a healthy home!

In our community, we do have extreme wind and weather, so don’t be alarmed if you find a leak, it doesn’t mean your house is a leaky home, but it does mean you may have neglected some key maintenance tasks for your property. Most commonly, these are things like painting/sealing the property, clearing gutters, removing lichen/moss from exterior materials etc.

If in doubt, always keep professional advice. We get a building report on our own property every 1-2 years, just like getting a WoF on a car. Your house is worth a lot more, so it is definitely important to look after the health of it.

Unseasonable rain behind arable ‘harvest from hell’ - Feds Three weeks of on and off rain, with the weekend’s storm a sting in the tail, have caused widespread damage to arable crops up and down the country.

“Talking to farmers who have been around for a while, some of them are calling it the worst harvest season in living memory,” Federated Farmers Arable Chairperson Colin Hurst said.

“Normally we’d be most of the way through harvest by now but three weeks of continual rain held everything up, and now many parts of the country were hammered by the remnants of the cyclone.”

Only Southland seems relatively unaffected.

Wheat crops are turning black in Mid and North Canterbury and there’s likely to be a shortage of good quality grain to turn into flour.

Hectares planted in wheat for milling were already down because of changes to buying arrangements and concern about a lack of competition, Colin said.

Farmer feedback from Canterbury and flooded parts of the Wairarapa are that up to half - and in some cases all - of pea crops have been ruined.

The reports to Federated Farmers are that crops grown for seed in Canterbury will be down on yield, and in some

places down on quality.

Drying space is at a premium.

Wet soil also hinders the natural drying of seed crops and so harvest is not going to be easy even as weather improves.

One farmer said that clover crops around Methven now resemble hay crops and the heads have largely disappeared into the foliage, with sprouting of those crops happening.

In flooded parts of the Wairarapa, cereal crops have a lot of silt on them, which is damaging to harvesting machinery.

In the Hawke’s Bay, vegetable (sweetcorn, beans squash) harvest has been interrupted and beans have been hit hard with sclerotinia.

Water logging has caused younger bean plants to die.

The remnants of Cyclone Dovi also severely knocked around a lot of maize crops in the Waikato - north Taranaki areas.

“We get patches of rough weather this time of year but it’s very unusual to have such a sustained period of rain,” Colin says.

“The challenge now is to dry out what we can and salvage what is left of the harvest.”

GARDENING THIS WEEK Preparing for winter: By Wally Richards It may sound a bit unusual but now is the time to get organised with your winter gardens. With both vegetables and flowers it’s over the next couple of months you need to plant up seeds or seedlings so that you will have crops to harvest and displays of flowering plants in the middle of winter.

If you plant late; say April through to June, then there will be not much growth till the spring and then the vegetables will go to seed and be a waste of time. For flower plants it is not a problem. Planting vegetables such as brassicas at this time of the year can be a problem because of white butterflies and their caterpillars devouring your young plants.

The best solution I have found for this is the following; If growing winter cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli from plants then check the plants you buy for the little yellow eggs of the white butterflies and rub them off the leaves so the plants are clean. Also don’t buy seedlings that are big as they are likely to have been stressed and may go to seed prematurely. Instead look for nice young plants and if a bit too small to transplant don’t worry, they are good value for you to grow on till they are big enough to transplant.

I like to spray the seedlings a few days before transplanting with Vaporgard as this reduces the transplant shock and the plants stand up

without laying down as you often see with transplanting seedlings.

They get away to a quicker start.

Also remember to plunge the punnet into a bucket of water to thoroughly wet the mix before removing the seedlings. This reduces root damage. When you make the planting hole, place some Neem Tree Granules into the base of the hole along with some of Wallys Unlocking your soil. Also sprinkle the same onto the soil around the seedlings.

The Neem Granules help to protect the plant from insect pests and the Unlocking your soil assists in root development, and supplies about 80 odd minerals and elements for a healthier plant and more nutritional value for you. Doing this only will help with caterpillar control but the next step will make sure you don’t have the pests on the plants and in amongst the curds of cauliflowers and broccoli when you harvest.

The total protection is by using hoops of alkathene pipe and crop cover mesh. You place lengths of the pipe into the soil making a hoop that’s about 1 metre tall over the row of plants.

The pipes are spaced about 50 to 70 cm apart.

Then take your crop cover which is 4 metres wide and place it over the hoops and on the windward side

cover it with soil to hold secure. On the ends and the other side place lengths of old 100 x 50 (4 x 2) wood to hold in place. This allows you to open up and weed as needed.

The rest of the time the plants are protected from insects, birds, cats and strong winds. The cover gives a 15 percent shade factor which in a sunny situation is also good value.

It allows rain or overhead watering with a soft wand to wet the soil still.

Winter vegetables such as leeks and brassicas should be planted as soon as. Remember to add natural products such as animal manures, blood & bone and garden lime. If you don’t feed the soil you don’t get the results. With the weather being a bit unsettled in many areas, a lot of the summer pest insects have not been as plentiful as if the weather

had been more settled.

What I have noticed as a result is very little damage by psyllids on tomato plants outside and I have not seen any white butterflies except the odd ones.

Glasshouses are a real asset and I highly recommend that you keen gardeners invest in one before winter so you can extend your growing season.

In some areas it is the only way to grow some heat loving plants such as okra, luffa, cucumber, chilli and capsicums with a good degree of success even at this time of the year. For instance outside in the open dwarf beans and normal type climbing beans are doing well but snake beans are struggling. Not enough heat. If you are going to buy a glasshouse type unit then the

best is definitely glass as opposed to plastic or other materials. Glass may break if you play cricket on the lawn but it will outlast as many years as you can garden, otherwise.

It’s easy to clean and maintain and unlike plastic film or similar materials it is not affected by UV so does not have to be replaced every few years.

By placing quarantine cloth over the vents and doorway you can make your glasshouse fairly insect proof.

You can take insects into the house on plant material or even in soil/compost mixes.

With the world’s weather patterns changing it could mean a glasshouse is the only way to have a reasonable control over the environment and be able to grow the plants you want.

Million dollar fund launched to help nurses return to practice The Ministry of Health has launched a $1 million fund to help former nurses return to the healthcare sector, to focus on growing the workforce as pressures from COVID-19 continue.

NZSO to play live to audiences in Wellington The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra will perform seven special free concerts in Wellington from this week, each designed for an audience of up to 100 people.

The NZSO has created the concert series after having to cancel a North Island tour this month of The Art of Fugue due to Covid-19 restrictions, and postpone its sold-out 75th anniversary concert at Wellington’s 2000-seat capacity Michael Fowler Centre until later this year.

Under the Covid-19 Protection Framework Red setting, the Orchestra is allowed to perform to a live audience of up 100 people, if all audience members are vaccinated, maintain social distancing and are encouraged to wear masks.

The concert series Daily Catch will be performed at the Public Trust Hall on Lambton Quay from 16 February, with further concerts on 18, 19, 21, 22,23 and 25 February, all from 6.30pm.

An ensemble of NZSO players perform works by Bach, Haydn, Mozart, New Zealand composer Douglas Lilburn and more. The programme changes for each concert and the works to be played are announced each night.

Entry is free, but requires a ticket

Public Notices Cashmere Avenue School New Entrant Out-of-Zone Enrolment For Terms 3 & 4 2022

Newlands Primary School Notice regarding out of zone enrolments for Term 3 2022 Enrolment at Newlands Primary School is governed by an enrolment scheme, details of which are available on our website https://newlandsprimary.school.nz/enrolments. The Board has determined that up to 10 places are likely to be available for out of zone new entrant students wishing to commence during Term 3 2022 (25 July to 30 September). The exact number of places will depend on the number of applications received from students who live within the school’s home zone. The Board has determined we also have a small number of spaces still available for new entrants from Term 2 (02 May to 08 July).

For students seeking enrolment to commence school during Term 2 or Term 3 2022, deadline for receipt of applications for out of zone places is 9:00am Friday 11 March 2022. If the number of out of zone applications exceeds the number of places available, students will be selected by ballot. If a ballot for out of zone places is required, this will be held on Friday 11 March 2022.

Parents will be informed of the outcome of the ballot within three school days of the ballot being held. Details of how applications from out of zone students are processed is also available on the school website (https://newlandsprimary.school.nz/ enrolments).

Cummins and co let Langer languish Times, they are a changin’ and people like Justin Langer do not seem to fit in these days.

Langer’s messy exit as Australian cricket coach after almost four years of tremendous success goes to show being a coach has never had less power than in 2022.

Players run sport now, they call the shots and there seems little space for the tough but fair authoritarian coach.

Winning used to be the only deodorant a coach needed to keep his job for a long time.

The Alex Ferguson’s and Bill Belichick’s of the world gained job stability in an unstable work environment by coaching their teams to constant success.

Langer’s departure proves that results are no longer the be-allend-all.

Now you must relate to your players on more than just a sport level.

An element of mate-ship must be had.

The players have clearly won out when it comes to Langer. His

intensity clearly wore thin within the playing group despite their Twenty20 World Cup and Ashes success.

This has also been a black mark against the captaincy of Pat Cummins.

When he was named leader prior to the start of the Ashes, there was renewed hope that Australia now had a decent bloke lead their team for the first time in a long time.

However, Cummins has proved spineless in recent weeks.

Kerr ramping-up for big season Wellington’s Hamish Kerr hopes to reap the rewards of changing his approach to training at the Sir Graeme Douglas International presented

After placing an impressive tenth at the Tokyo Olympics, Hamish and his coach, Terry Lomax, reassessed his training and have placed a greater emphasis on speed to help the national record-holder (2.31m) soar to new heights.

“After coming home from Tokyo, we went back to the drawing board and looked to the future,” explains Hamish, 25. “I know I can consistently jump in the high 2.20s and low 2.30s and that’s great.

“But we have worked out my technique and put in place a model to be a 2.40m jumper rather than a 2.30m jumper.

“I now have a lot more speed and power going into the takeoff. I thought it might take longer to start seeing the benefit of that, but in training I can already see this. The greater speed means more momentum, which will hopefully lead to more height.”

So far this season, Hamish has had a mixed campaign. In his first competition of the season at the Jumps to Music in Hawera he leapt a best of 2.10m before at the Pac ‘n’ Save Cooks Classic in Whanganui he cleared an impressive 2.28m and had three solid attempts at adding 1cm to his national record at 2.32m.

“I remember first competing (at Douglas Track & Field) when I was aged 11 at a Trans-Tasman meet, adds Christchurch-based Hamish, who originally hails from Auckland. “It was a big deal back then to compete for my country and I was stoked to jump a PB of 1.54m.

Last year Hamish impressed at the Sir Graeme Douglas International clearing 2.28m to win so what are his ambitions for this year’s event?

“The aim during the domestic season has been to set the programme around preparing my body for when I eventually head overseas. On paper this season I’ve had one decent result and two misfires but I’m happy with how it’s gone.

“Sir Graeme Douglas will be one where I’m aiming to jump pretty high. I’ll aim to take off the shackles and really go for it.

I just hope for good conditions on the day and go from there.”

Beyond that he plans to com-

pete at the ITM in Christchurch (26 February) and the Jennian Homes Track & Field Championships in Hastings (3-6 March) and hopes to secure a qualification spot for the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade later next month.

With the World Championships in Eugene, Oregon and the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games also taking place later this year there is an unprecedented set of opportunities for the cream of New Zealand athletes and Hamish cannot wait.

“International championships have gone from a drought over the past couple of years to a monsoon this year, and it’s awesome,” he adds. “Every athlete is super excited to get a high level of competition. I just want to get out there and see how the training changes are working.”

But first he says people should tune in and make sure they take the time to watch one of the premier athletics events in New Zealand on Sunday.

“There are not many domestic sporting events in New Zealand where you can see so many Olympians competing at the same time and that I think that is something really exciting.”

I’m sure the former test opener won’t be short of job offers.

The situation should be a warning to all coaches everywhere.

Winning is not everything anymore, you must get on with the players too.

You’ll soon be out of a job if you don’t.

Richardson sees Triumph in his future Wellington motorbike racer Shane Richardson will race a Triumph Street Triple RS as a factory rider in this year’s British Supersport Championship.

The Supersport Championship acts as a feeder series to the British Superbike Championship, arguably one of the world’s most competitive two-wheeled domestic series’.

Last year, Richardson raced in the National Superstock Championship.

A season that taught him how vital self-belief is when times get tough.

“I really had to show to myself and others I deserved to be here and was still on the up, simply to warrant sacrificing so much for the financial input that comes with it,” he told us in November.

This season, Richardson remains with the Astro-JJR Racing family.

And along with a jump to the Supersport series, Richardson also has to learn a new bike.

“People have asked if I will need to change my riding for the Triple but there are changes between every bike,” he said.

“We’ve got a great team and a good pre-season lined up and we’ll work through it all.”

There is always a hint of nervousness when predicting how competitive a new bike will be once race day rolls around.

But Richardson has strong faith in the team around him.

“At Triumph, when we all got together for the first time, to see the size of the effort around you as a rider, it just feels like a really good place to be.

“I’m very excited and quietly confident.”
