Publican Jono Cox can see community spirit in action as his business looks to tick along during the Omicron outbreak.

Like many small businesses, Covid is sweeping through Jono’s staff at 1841 Bar and Restaurant in Johnsonville

and 1852 Pub & Kitchen in Brooklyn, so he has been forced to rely on former staff and community groups to step in and help out.

Johnsonville Rugby Football Club took up the challenge on Sunday, the SWIS Marching Team filled in on Monday night.

Hospitality challenge accepted Jono says he plans to have community groups helping out until at least this Sunday.

“Johnsonville Cricket Club will come in this Sunday and they plan to do it in cricket pads and helmets and have some fun with the whole thing.”

Jono had 25 of his staff away last week, isolating due to the pandemic but he says he enjoys a challenge and saw an opportunity to use a bit of Kiwi ingenuity to keep the doors open.

“I’m basically at the stage where we just have to get shit done,” he says.

“For us, the best way to get out of this is to keep working and move forward, while maintaining a level of social responsibility.”

“Adapting has become easier because we’ve had to over the years.

“The outpouring of support we have had has been huge from the community,” he says.

“No one wants to see us fail.”

“Small business is the fabric of New Zealand and it will be small businesses that get us out of this hole.”

“It’s heartwarming and has exceeded my expectations,” he says.

“We’re all in this together and the beauty of the pub is that it’s a hub for such a wide demographic of people to meet and they want to see a continuation

Not sure of your rights when renting?

Wellington Citizens Advice Bureau says that renting issues are some of the most common enquiries clients ask them about.

Some of the regular questions relate to rent payments, bond refunds, disputes over damage and inspections, and problems with mouldy, damp housing.

According to Dulce Piacentini, Service Manager at one of the five Wellington branches, lots of renting problems occur because people don’t know their rights and responsibilities as tenants (or landlords).

“There are a few key things to remember when you are renting” says Dulce. “One of the most important is that it’s

a legal requirement to have a written tenancy agreement.

The agreement is your ‘go-to’ if you have any disputes. It sets out the terms that you agreed to with your landlord.” You also need to keep a record of any changes to the agreement, such as adding or removing any co-tenants.

If you have any problems, the best thing to do is raise them with your landlord as soon as possible. “It’s good to put any issues in writing, so that you have a record of this communication” says Dulce.

Talking to your landlord (or tenant) as soon as possible can help resolve a lot of difficulties, but if you can’t reach an agreement or your landlord doesn’t sort things out within

a reasonable time period, you have some other options.

“A polite follow-up discussion or email can sometimes result in action, but if this doesn’t work the tenant can send the landlord a 14-day notice to remedy” says Dulce.

This is a letter warning the landlord they have 14 days to fix the problem, or you may go to the Tenancy Tribunal to sort the matter out. If the landlord still doesn’t act, the tenant can make an application to the Tenancy Tribunal, either online or using a paper form.

It costs around $20 ($20.44 in fact!).

longer-than-usual wait time for PlunketLine.”

Ms Edwards says as local clinics feel the squeeze of staffing shortages, frontline staff were focusing on seeing newborn pƝpi and those most in need of additional support.

“This means for people with good support networks who are doing well, we may need to cancel appointments, or offer them virtually or over the phone instead,” she explains.

“We have range of tools to assess and support wKƗnau virtually including online breastfeeding support, our zero-data website that answers many common parenting concerns, and regular updates and helpful advice on our Facebook page.

“Also, our wonderful PlunketLine nurses are available free to all whƗQau and caregivers 24/7 on 0800 933 922.”

Anyone with immediate concerns should get in touch with their GP or health care provider, or call an ambulance for urgent health care needs.

Ms Edwards says many people don’t realise that unfortunately WhƗnau Ɩwhina Plunket appointments that are missed because of COVID-19 cannot be made it up, unless parents are concerned about their child’s health and development or need extra support.

“We can’t go back in time and make up those missed appointments, which I understand is upsetting for parents. We will see

tamariki at their next core visit.”

Ms Edwards says most whƗnau and families have understood the pressure nurses, kaiƗwhina and health workers are under.

“It’s been really tough on parents who have had their babies during the pandemic. We have seen an increase in stress and anxiety in our whƗnau and families. We know the pandemic has hit people hard, socially and emotionally,” says Ms Edwards.

“Our staff are working incredibly hard to meet the needs of our tamariki, whƗnau and communities in the most trying of circumstances, and I’m grateful to our parents and caregivers for their patience and understanding as we navigate this together,” she says.

Thanks to NZCT’s generous grant, the Foundation is another step closer to the $10 million needed to outfit and equip the interior of the region’s new children’s hospital. This includes funding specialised medical equipment, as well as all the fittings, furnishings, communications, digital and creative aspects of this new purpose built paediatric facility.

Services disrupted With the Omicron variant of COVID-19 transmissions peaking around the country, Wellington City Council has prepared for its impact with continuity plans, and as such hasn’t experienced significant effects on facilities and services to the city yet.

However, over the next few weeks, Wellingtonians may experience more reduced hours, potentially closed facilities, and affected services as staff and contractors are required to self-isolate, are unwell and recuperating, are redeployed to essential services, or facilities are required to do a deep clean after being identified as a location of interest.

Critical services like rubbish collections, the Southern Landfill, funeral and crematoria services, and water maintenance will continue to operate but may be reduced in some areas, and most online services and payments will still be available.

Metlink fares halved from April

Metlink fares are set to be cut by 50 percent from April following the Government’s announcement on Monday.

Metlink fares will be halved from early April following the Government’s announcement on Monday that public transport fees across the country will be temporarily halved.

Greater Wellington Chair, Daran Ponter said the changes would mean the livelihoods of Wellingtonians will benefit in many ways .

“This is a demanding timeline for the introduction of such significant change. But the almost immediate outcome for Wellingtonians will be the relief from the extremes of prices at the pump and a lower cost of living. This will have positive flow on effects, from people’s ability to get to and from work to the ability for families to take their children to school.

“Greater Wellington welcomes

lower prices and is strongly motivated to work with the Government to make them happen.”

Metlink General Manager Scott Gallacher said Metlink would work quickly to overcome some of the operational challenges posed by the fare reduction to ensure passengers will benefit fully.

“We’re very confident we’ll get everything up and running from the first week of April. Our network has shown in the past two covid affected years how adaptable it can be, so we know it’s possible, we just need to make sure that all aspects of the network are in an appropriate state of play.

“As soon as we have had an opportunity to confirm the details around how we will be able to

deliver the Government’s announcement across all parts of our network, we will share this with our communities, across the bus, rail, ferry and Total Mobility networks,” added Gallacher.

“We are also still very much in a COVID environment, and we must ensure that we can cope with what could be a significant increase in patronage. The network, especially our amazing frontline staff, is already under strain from Omicron and everyone’s ongoing patience, kindness and understanding at this time is going to be welcomed”.

A formal decision on this approach will be discussed by council in the coming days and passengers can keep up to date with the latest by visiting metlink.org.nz

Hospital upgrades to enhance care and COVID-19 response Work to boost hospital resilience underway in both the Hutt Valley and Wellington will help ensure the continuation of safe care and support for both COVID-19 and non-COVID patients.

Following the allocation of $3 million in infrastructure funding, Hutt Valley and Capital & Coast DHBs have embarked on two projects to support routine care and bolster safety for patients and staff.

“As Wellington Regional Hospital’s ‘front door’, Te Pae Tiaki Wellington ED is vital in managing the flow of patients seeking hospitallevel care,” said 2DHB chief medical officer John Tait.

“In anticipation of an increase in people presenting to ED with COVID-19, we have reconfigured the ED screening area and created an additional space for secondary screening of known non-COVID-19 and potential COVID-19 patients. As well as increasing our screening capacity, this enables improved separation of patients.”

The second project to commence is focused on planned care, and will involve the refurbishment of a currently unused building on the Hutt Hospital campus to create a new renal unit.

“A building on the Hutt Hospital site that was previously used as a daycare centre will be refurbished to create a four-bay satellite unit where renal patients who are COVIDpositive can continue to receive treatment and support.

“This means these people can still receive care, while remaining separate from nonCOVID renal patients – many of whom are immunocompromised and have a higher risk of infection. Work has begun on the refurbishment, and we hope for the unit to be completed and open to patients by the end of this month or early April.”

These projects are part of a wider suite of improvement and enhancement works planned for the 2DHB campuses.

Yes something needed to be done to help. It was getting out of control.

I am relieved but someone is still making plenty out of petrol.

Even with the tax cuts I am still looking at going electric.

It is a crisis so any help with keeping costs down is great.

I don’t drive so the help with public transport costs is really helpful.

We all need to look at alternatives for the future and cutting the tax is a short term solution to a long term problem.

Karori RSA mourn highest ranking ex-service member The Karori RSA is mourning the loss of its highest-ranking ex-service member, in Air Marshal (Retired) David Crooks, CB, OBE. AM Crooks passed away quietly after a period of ill health last Wednesday at the Selwyn Sprott Rest Home in Karori at age 90.

After being born and raised in Rangiora, AM Crooks joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1951 as a 20-year-old, and soon excelled as a pilot in jet aircraft from Vampires to Venoms with 14 and 75 Squadrons. After training he became a flying instructor in Taieri and Wigram from 1953.

One young RNZAF Officer was future Air Vice Marshal and fellow Karori RSA member Robin Klitscher, who has a letter from early 1957 when he was an Acting Pilot Officer undergoing ab-initio pilot training. It was signed ‘D.M. Crooks, Flight Lieutenant, Adjutant No 4 Squadron” and it commanded APO Klitscher to report to that Unit at RNZAF Stion Taieri to continue his training between semesters at the Central Flying School in Wigram.

As AVM Klitscher noted, ‘indeed I see my logbook that on 9 March 1957 he flew me as an instructor in Harvard 1086 for 45 minutes for practice in ‘stalling, turning, takeoff, approach, landing and aerobatics’. I must have

satisfied him since I was allowed to fly solo shortly thereafter.”

After Taieri, AM Crooks then spent time in Malaya as well as both the United Kingdom and Singapore as he rose through the operational branch of the Air Force. He also flew Canberra bomber aircraft as well.

In 1973 AM Crooks took command of Base Wigram before becoming Director of Policy Development at Defence HQ. After being made Deputy Chief of the Air Force in 1980, AVM Crooks then held the post of Chief of Air Force between 1983 and 1986. He was then promoted to AM as a result of becoming Chief of Defence in 1986-87.

As AVM Klitscher noted at the time when AM Crooks was Chief of Defence, he was his subordinate as Air Officer Commanding the RNZAF Operating Group at that most difficult time when Sitiveni Rabuka’s first coup in Fiji occurred.

“The incident revealed a New Zealand Government that had little idea what to do, but also harbored troubling ideas about what it could ask of its military in responding to events then unfolding in Fiji, the effects of which on our military have reverberated down the years. The full sweep of the story has yet to be told, but CDF David Crooks was at the

centre of it from the outset’.

After retiring as CDF, AM Crooks then put something back into the service by gathering sufficient private donations to fund the building in 1987 of the RNZAF Museum at Wigram, where it still proudly stands, even after the 2010 and 2011 Christchurch earthquakes.

In 1990 AM Crooks joined the RSA after retiring to Karori. Beyond his military career he had many other interests including military history and vintage cars, where he was a longterm key officer of the Wellington Branch of the Vintage Car Club, having owned several vintage vehicles including a Jaguar. He and his family were often seen in Karori (and at Napier’s annual Art Deco gatherings) either in his 1935 Morris 8 sports car or vintage Jaguar.

He also became a National President of the RNZAF Association, as well as becoming Patron of the Wellington branch before becoming a Life Member with over 20 continuous years with the association.

Overall AM Crooks will be remembered by his Air Force and civilian contemporaries Including those inside the Karori RSA as a very humble, friendly, well liked and dapper gentleman, who used to go on many walks throughout the suburb, before illness struck him down in his last six months.

The Karori RSA is mourning the death of its highest ranking ex-serviceman Air Marshall David Crooks.

Yes, we don’t have the best weather in Wellington, most of the time, but where we lack in climate, we surely make it up in… personality! But if a change is what you are after, then you will probably be stuck with the dilemma of deciding to buy or sell first. s Buying First: This option is perfect for anyone who is super fussy! So, if are the type of person that asks your partner what they want for dinner and then swiftly reject every option under the sun, then buying first is for you. Yes, we can see you looking at 20 houses and not like every single one. If you want to hunt unicorns and chase that 10/10 perfect home, then buying first is a wonderful option - if you can afford the bridging finance or to hold your current home. You can also look at buying with long-settlements / subject to sale, but generally you will end up having to pay a bit extra to ensure your offer gets accepted over lower, cleaner offers. s Selling First: Typical this has not been the best option in previous markets, as buying had traditionally been the harder task due to heavy competition and an upward trend in prices. Senior citizens staying home more during pandemic Almost two-thirds of Wellington’s senior population are currently staying home as much as possible, according to a new survey by Age Concern Wellington Region (ACWR).

Age Concern wanted to discover more about what was happening for seniors as large numbers of the population begin to be impacted

by Omicron. This survey represents a snapshot of the wellbeing of seniors in early March 2022.

Despite media and Government communications that Omicron is less severe than Delta, more than half of seniors in the survey said they are still very worried about becoming infected with Covid-19.

Globally, seniors have been the hardest hit by Covid-19. Like many other nations, multiple lockdowns and Covid-19 spreading rapidly in the community has meant many seniors in New Zealand have had to frequently hide themselves away from their communities as Covid-19 passes through. ACWR’s survey results have shown that this is still the case. If seniors leave the house, it is most likely to be for groceries or to tend to health needs.

With 400 respondents, the sur-

vey represents approximately 1% of the entire senior population of the Wellington Region.

“Beginning to lose some of my confidence, unsure about going places,” commented one of the survey respondents. “[I] just wish all this was over…, just miss all the socialising,” said another.

One of the surprising trends that emerged from this survey is that older seniors aged 80+ are slightly less anxious than those aged 65 – 79. There is a noticeable collective trend among older seniors of being less concerned about getting sick, less worried about going out and less likely to stay at home as much as possible.

Respondent comments highlighted that isolation for some is compounding the difficulties caused by the pandemic. One respondent sums this up particularly well: “For people like myself, living alone, with my family living overseas, there have been a few times when I would have appreciated a helping hand but of course my friends are of a similar age and need to look after themselves.

Sometimes I’d just love a little pat on the back for coping so well with my home, garden and self.”

White Ferns frustrating so far in World Cup I’ve enjoyed the women’s 50-over Cricket World Cup so far even if the White Ferns’ tactics have been baffling at times.

The competition itself is entertaining, the matches are close and the effort of the players, most of whom are semi-professional at best.

The matches remind me of watching men’s matches in the mid-90s as a kid.

They are tactical battles which eb and flow.

Australia are clearly the best team in the tournament and only catching them on a bad day will prevent them from winning the final early next month.

New Zealand, England, India, the West Indies and South Africa

are vying for the three remaining semifinal spots and I expect that to be an enjoyable tussle to the end.

The New Zealand campaign so far on home soil has been in my view, chaotic and a little shambolic at times.

It started before the tournament began for me when leading spinner and wicket-taker over the past 12 months Leigh Kasperek was left out of the squad altogether.

The decision has baffled fans and only Kasperek herself and the coaching staff will know the real reasons why she was omitted but her absence has hurt the team.

The three-run loss to the West Indies showed a lack of composure in the latter stages.

Talented teen spinner Fran Jonas was exposed with both bat and ball in the opening match of the tournament and has not played since.

Not her fault by any means but more on coaches Bob Carter and Jacob Oram for putting her in that position.

Good wins over Bangladesh and India looked promising but then a pummelling at the hands of the Aussies to the tune of 141 runs on Sunday, exposed the frailties in the team and a reliance on a few, namely Amy Satterthwaite, Susie Bates, Melie Kerr and Sophie Devine, to do the work of many.

Tactically the White Ferns seem to be off the pace, twice they’ve won the toss and bowled on batting

decks and lost the game, seemingly unwilling to take the game to either the West Indies or Australia by batting first and putting a score on the board.

That’s the approach which has worked best so far in the tournament, yet the White Ferns seem happy to react to the game situation than create momentum in their own right.

It means they must win their games against South Africa, defending champions England and lowly Pakistan to make the semifinals.

That should be the minimum expectation of this team when playing at home and that is now on a knife-edge.

I hope New Zealand Cricket can see the need to invest more money into the women’s game in New Zealand.

The good teams are usually split by the quality of their ground fielding and catching and until players are paid a decent wage as cricketers, that area of the game will always be under-appreciated by part-time players.

If you have not seen much of the tournament so far, I encourage you to do so.

It is of an entertaining, industrious standard with the added bonus of hearing Ian Smith commentate cricket once again.

Now that is a perk worth celebrating.

Vishvaka ton keeps Johnsonville rolling A stunning century from Devan Vishvaka helped an under-manned Johnsonville to an improbable 14-run win over Karori at Alex Moore Park, on Saturday.

The fourth round Pearce Cup encounter was shortened to a 50-over contest after day one was abandoned in March 5 due to the ongoing omicron outbreak in the capital.

Rain on Saturday further reduced it to a 41-over contest.

Johnsonville was missing four frontline players including captain Raki Weerasundara while Karori welcomed back several Wellington Firebirds and Black Caps test wicketkeeper Tom Blundell.

Devan held the Johnsonville innings together, blazing 111 off 103 balls after opening the innings.

He found very little support as the hosts struggled against a strong Karori bowling attack led by Michael Sneddon who took 4 for 44.

He helped reduce Johnsonville to 74 for 5 at one stage.

Devan found some support from Reece Edgecombe (25) before Kevin Weerasundara (10) and Neranga Jayaweera (11) held an end up as Devan accelerated his strike rate.

Devan was the ninth wicket to fall with the score on 170, with Avinash Shastri

and Dave Hudson adding 20 vital runs for the final wicket before Johnsonville was dismissed for 190 in the 41st over.

The Johnsonville bowlers refused to let Karori get the one big partnership that needed to knock off the small target.

Opener Clark Murray added 45 before Kevin Weerasundara removed him.

Liam Roche added 37 but he was the first of four wickets for Reece Edgecombe as he cleaned up the tail.

Blundell only mustered 21 as Johnsonville dismissed Karori for 176.

Stand-in captain Jeremy Benton praised Devan’s innings.

“He was just in the zone the entire time,” he says.

“Karori had a very good bowling attack but Devan is in such good form and must be on the cusp of a Firebirds call-up at this point because he’s scoring runs for fun.

Jeremy also praised the efforts of Reece Edgecombe.

“His 25 was really important, just as important as they 20 we got for our last wicket.

“Then for him to get four wickets with the ball was just what we needed.”

The result confirms Johnsonville will qualify for the final on April 1 but a win against Onslow next Saturday and Sunday will ensure them top spot for the second consecutive season.

Devan Vishvaka’s 111 was enough to see Johnsonville earn a 14-run Pearce Cup cricket victory over Karori on Saturday.

The U20 women’s team reflects the dominance that Epsom Girls Grammar School and Hutt Valley High School have shown over the last four years at the school level, while the U20 Men’s team is made up of players from many different schools including Shirley Boys High School in Christchurch (2nd place finishers

in their first time attending the New Zealand Secondary School Ultimate Championships in 2021) and the first New Zealand representatives from Katikati College.
