Continued from page 1 Based in Wellington ReBicycle held a workshop, with three bike mechanics, in Wainuiomata over the weekend to help anyone who wanted to get their bike serviced.

It’s a community-led initiative that gives back to the community, preventing useful resources ending up in the landfill, reducing transport carbon emissions and enabling free healthy transport options. All bikes are donated by the public, parts are donated or bought, and mechanics volunteer their time where possible. Due to limited time and resources they

aren’t able to fix up every bike, and inevitably some will end up going to the metal recycler but the more volunteers they have, the better use they can make of the resources.

Regional bike hub facilitator for EkeRua ReBicycle, Sadie Coe, says they had quite a few requests to come to Wainuiomata and fix bikes and saw there was a need.

“Ideally it would be best if it could be run locally but we thought we would come over and help in the hope that someone local will see what we do and run with the idea,” Sadie says.

Sadie’s job is to help people

set up bike hubs and then give support.

She says the aim is to also address transport poverty.

“A lot of people can’t afford to pay for petrol especially now and even public transport is costly so once you have a bike that is free transport, especially if you bring it back in and get it fixed multiple times by us and you can also upgrade to a bigger size bike if it is for kids.”

“We have partnerships with a lot of people like Red Cross and Disability Action so that we can get bikes to people who need them most but we don’t

have criteria of who we give bikes to.”

ReBicycle is a charitable community organisation which ‘upcycles’ donated second-hand bikes into safe, practical commuter bikes to gift or loan to people who need them, starting with newly settled refugees in the Wellington region but also including any people experiencing financial difficulty.

It is all about getting people on bikes and giving them opportunities to learn to ride. Over 2000 bikes have been donated to ReBicycle since they started and with help from volunteers.

Outdated approach to mental health A Consumer NZ mystery shop of 14 insurance companies has revealed customers who sought advice or help for their mental health could be regarded as ‘high-risk’ claimants.

This could result in the addition of exclusion clauses to their policies that Consumer considers unfair, as they deny customers cover when they need it most.

The mystery shop involved three shoppers calling each insurance company to get cover for health, life and income protection insurance. The aim was to find out whether any of the shoppers would get cover for a declared pre-existing mental health condition, or whether a stand-down period or exclusion would apply.

They found blanket exclusions for mental illness in all the health insurance policies it looked at, with some nominal benefits for counselling and psychiatric care.

Consumer found mental health exclusions could be added after speaking to a GP about stress, marriage counselling and bullying.

Although exclusions and stand-down periods are a standard and legal insurance practice, how they are applied to mental health needs to change.

“Many New Zealanders are unaware that what they disclose at the GP’s office could have ramifications for them when it comes to insurance cover,” Consumer NZ lead investigative writer Cherie Lacey says.

“This is problematic because people should be free to discuss mental health concerns without fear of repercussions.”

All shoppers were offered insurance, but most were told they’d need to complete

additional paperwork for the underwriter to decide whether any exclusion or stand-down period would apply to their policy.

To make an assessment on a policy, insurers may obtain a customer’s full medical history to determine the risk level of a potential claim.

Medical history extends beyond diagnosis and the prescription of medicine; it also includes consultation notes from a GP, so insurers can be privy to what is discussed in the doctor’s office.

Consumer takes issue with insurers making decisions based on medical notes without getting clarity on diagnosis or understanding the circumstances in which someone received mental health support.

The mystery shop also highlighted the different approaches to covering mental health by insurers. While one may limit your cover or add exclusions, another can accept you as is, putting little to no caveats regarding mental health on your policy.

More support needed Many people who have caught COVID-19 feel they did not get the healthcare needed to cope with the illness, preliminary results from a nationwide study show.

Nearly 900 people have participated in the research so far, with 400 completing a series of four surveys about their experience of the illness.

Many respondents reported needing better access to mental health support.

Survey research is continuing until the end of April 2022. To add to information about people’s experience, qualitative data will also be collected through interviews with up to 75 participants.

Ground-breaking research into New Zealand’s most common rock type is unlocking some of the secrets of many faults running underneath this country.

Faults in greywacke rocks have caused incredible havoc in Christchurch, Kaikoura and Edgecumbe in recent years and are the most common type in the country, yet the ‘ugly duckling’ of New Zealand geology has never been studied.

EQC-funding has enabled a research team to perform a comprehensive set of laboratory experiments on greywacke rocks in machines that can create tiny earthquakes by simulating the high temperatures and pressures that exist where earthquakes begin.

This included testing greywacke samples at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, which has a sophisticated apparatus that can measure the frictional properties of the rock at high temperatures and pressure.

Struggling with bins Dear sir, madam or them, they or us.

I’m struggling to find on when the appropriate day and time I have to put my bins out?

At first I received a leaflet on times only to be told these were wrong and to check the website.

To which I did and it was clearly wrong! Urgghh!

I now go to the Dave method, to which I look out at my neighbour Dave’s house every morning to see if his bins are out. He must work for the council I think.

And by the way, I think in their

ultimate wisdom the council got the bins around the wrong way.

My only cardboard use is birthday cards and cigarettes packets (both of which I buy for myself as my wife Karen left me years ago), and the glass recycling bin barely contains my beer and gin addiction!

Finally, could the truck that emptied and took the lid off my waste bin please return it, as the cats and opossums in the area are now out of control.

Shane Richardson recovering

After taking a spill from his bike Shane Richardson is on the road to recovery after damaging his hands.

Back in March Shane came to grief during his second day of on the Astro JJR Triumph.

“Unfortunately on the second day I had a little get off after lunch which prematurely ended the test for me. I earned myself a hospital stay with damage to both of my hands that required surgery.

My left hand required small skin

grafts and tendon repair and on my right hand I acquired a couple of fractures. I also lost the tip of my ring finger and have had my middle finger shortened. Having been seen by a hand specialist today, there is a chance I may need to have the top of my middle finger amputated,” Shane says.

“Thankfully my Shoei helmet and RST airbag suit did exactly what they were supposed to and everything else is ok, but I will be taking my time to make sure I give my hands the best chance of recovery as I need them for work-

ing every day outside of racing.”

Shane says it has been about six weeks since the crash and he's pleased to say things are healing well but there is still a little way to go yet but plenty of positives.

He's had the pin removed from his middle finger and most of his hands are now unwrapped, so he can start to get things moving again.

wound which is taking a little longer to heal, but it is still going the right way,” Shane says.

Shane pays tribute to the Simon Andrews Fund #17 for helping him out immensely during his recovery by enabling him to attend regular hyperbaric treatment at Mercia MS Therapy Centre as well as regular laser therapy.

“These have been helping so much in speeding up my recovery

and helping me get back to both racing and working faster. Without the Simon Andrews fund I simply wouldn’t be able to afford the amount of treatment I am receiving and for that I am very grateful,” he says.

And what Shane is looking forward to most is being able to get back to doing the simple things with both hands and then back to racing.

ANZAC Day National commemoration Anzac Day takes place each year on April 25 and commemorates all New Zealanders killed in war, while also honouring returned servicemen and women. April 25 marks the anniversary of the landing of New Zealand and Australian soldiers, on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915. The aim was to capture the Dardanelles, the gateway to the Bosphorus and the Black Sea, however, at the end

of the campaign, Gallipoli was still held by its Turkish defenders.

Among those who lost their lives in the Gallipoli campaign were 2779 New Zealanders, almost one in four of those who served on Gallipoli.

As always, ceremonies are held at war memorials up and down New Zealand and in places overseas where New Zealanders gather to pay tribute.

This quote made by Ataturk, a great Turkish statesman in 1934, is inscribed on the memorial at Anzac Cove, Gallipoli. It is also inscribed on the Ataturk memorial at Tarakena Bay, which is said to be similar to the coast around Gallipoli: “Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives; You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country.

With an array of hands on arts classes available The Mix Wainuiomata is providing an opportunity for all.

With funding from the Ministry of Culture and Heritage, Lower Hutt’s Mix joined with Friends Who Care, earlier this year, to provide programmes for the next three years.

Part of the COVID recovery fund was put toward creative spaces and Mix is one of 54 organisations to receive funding.

Mix is a mental health and disability service provider and the move into Wainui-

omata sees their first steps in expanding services.

Garry Gerrard, a well-known Wainuiomata artist, has been with the Mix for 22 years and says the idea is to also have an open studio and people can do what they want to do themselves or a set programme doing bone carving or painting in old masters.

Part of what is on offer at the Rowe Parade base is bone and wood carving, along with moko kowhaiwhai, and also clay art.

The Mix is at 6 Rowe Parade Wainuiomata and is to be open from 10:00 am to 3 pm Monday to Friday.

What’s Cooking... in Make Delicious Whole-Wheat Pizzas in an Air Fryer Ingredients: s 1/4 cup lower-sodium marinara sauce s 2 whole-wheat pita rounds s 1 cup baby spinach leaves (1 oz.) s 1 small plum tomato, cut into 8 slices 1 small garlic clove, thinly sliced s 1 ounce pre-shredded partskim mozzarella cheese (about 1/4 cup) s 1/4 ounce shaved Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese (about 1 Tbsp.)

1. Spread marinara sauce evenly over 1 side of each pita bread. Top with half each of the spinach leaves, tomato slices, garlic, and cheeses.

2. Place 1 pita in air fryer basket, and cook at 350°F until cheese is melted and pita is crisp, 4 to 5 minutes. Repeat with remaining pita.

Hutt City Council has released its draft Annual Plan 2022-23, Nga Ekenga Making Progress, for public engagement.

“When we adopted our bold and ambitious 10-Year Plan last year, our community told us that we need to front up to the challenges we face as a city. For this coming financial year, we’re doing exactly that,” Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says .

“Throughout this draft Annual Plan, you will see us putting budget lines into action.

We will invest $26.7 million to make headway into building a new Naenae Pool.

“As part of our necessary $587 million investment over the next 10 years, we will be spending $48.7 million on upgrading our ageing drinking, sewage and storm water network.

“And we are investing $16.8 million to start constructing the first two sections of Tupua Horo Nuku at Sunshine Bay and Windy Point.

This is all part of creating safer and more resilient access for all transport users around the Eastern Bays, as well as increasing the opportunities for local and regional tourism.

“These projects, and many others across our city over the next 12 months, all aim to do one thing - get the basics right. By investing heavily in our basic infrastructure in a financially responsible way, we can progress with laying solid foundations for the future of our city.”

Hutt City Council’s Chief Executive Jo Miller says the focus of the draft Annual Plan is to deliver on key infrastructure projects in an environment of rising costs. “Through embedding cost savings and other efficiency gains, rates increases have been constrained to keep to those projected in our 10-year plan.

This has been challenging, but it’s important that we meet the expectations of our council and community and deliver on what we say we will do.”

Residents can have their say by completing an online survey which opens today, 12 April, and runs until 3 May 2022. Council will consider feedback and adopt the final Annual Plan on 30 June 2022.

Time for a liveable income Oil Free Wellington is calling for the government to take GST off food and ensure all people have access to a liveable income in Budget 2022.

As we start this Easter holiday, food prices are 7.6% higher than a year ago - with fruit and vegetables up a whopping 18% - and a significant group of renters are paying 40% or more of their income on housing.

“Some of us will have enough to enjoy this holiday time, but for far too many, it will continue to be a time of stress and struggle,” says spokesperson Michelle Ducat “A liveable income and GST off food will enable people to put enough food on the table and have enough to live with dignity in their communities.”

“Recent increases to benefit levels are not enough,” Michelle says.” As Max Rashbrooke says “there is still a mountain to climb to reverse 40 years of neglect” since the benefit

cuts of the 1990s.”

Auckland Action Against Poverty (AAAP) says the current system treats people as if “our worth is determined by our labour and the colour of our skin”.

“This way of valuing people is the same exploitative economic model that treats the land as a resource to exploit - which has led to the climate crisis,” Michelle says.

“It continues to lead to the growing gaps between those who have and those who don’t, exacerbated by the pandemic.”

Oil Free Wellington supports AAAP and Fairer Future’s demands for a liveable income for all because it is one step towards making a world where people and the earth are valued and can thrive.

“If the government truly wants to be transformational it will guarantee a liveable income for all this Budget 2022.”

Sex education New resources designed to support wellbeing and the teaching and learning of relationships and sexuality education in schools and kura in ways that are effective, safe and inclusive, has been launched by the Ministry of Education.

The new resources contain additional information on consent, the use of digital technologies, healthy relationships and pornography.

This follows a 2018 Education Review Office report noting that the curriculum would benefit from more on these issues, and reflects feedback from the Korero Matauranga | Education Conversation calling on schools and kura to take more action

against bullying, violence and child abuse and to be more inclusive, and to help students recognise the importance of diversity and respect in relationships.

Printed copies will be distributed to all state and state-integrated schools and kura, and digital resources can be accessed on our website: https://bit.ly/3O65nLl The new resources are optional, but are believed to be effective, safe and inclusive teaching practice around relationships and sexuality education.

It’s mandatory for schools and kura to consult their community at least every two years on the content of their local health curriculum.

Healthy drinks only policy Te Tahuhu o te Matauranga Ministry of Education is publicly consulting on proposals to introduce new Regulations requiring primary schools to only provide healthy drinks, these being water, milk and non-dairy milk alternatives.

New Zealand health statistics show high rates of decayed, missing or filled teeth in children by the time they reach their final year of primary school (Year 8). Longstanding structural and historic inequities in New Zealand mean that these rates are disproportionately higher for Pacific and Maori students. Sugar-sweetened beverages now account for more than a quarter of children’s sugar intake in New Zealand.

Current National Administration Guideline (NAG) 5b ceases on 1 January 2023. This NAG requires all school boards to promote healthy food and nutrition.

Good progress has been made by primary schools in their voluntary adoption of healthy drinks, or water only policies for their students. But, to keep our children’s

teeth healthy, and to reduce levels of childhood obesity, which has increased significantly in recent years, we are proposing to transfer NAG 5b into a legal duty, and add a new duty meaning school boards can only provide healthy drinks in primary schools.

The consultation is an opportunity for schools, kura, parents, and health professionals, to have their say on the proposed approach, and the other options being considered.

A minority of secondary schools also have a healthy drinks policy.

The Government is considering introducing a similar policy in secondary schools in the future.

Before taking this step however, we want to hear from them what the barriers to introduction might be. The consultation also gives us this opportunity.

The consultation closes at midnight on Thursday, June 2, 2022.

If it is agreed to by Cabinet, the new duty to only provide healthy drinks in all primary schools would take effect from Term 1, 2023.

Petros wins Wellington’s NZCB Apprentice Challenge Apprentice Petros Vrahasotakis has claimed the title of the Wellington New Zealand Certified Builders (NZCB) Apprentice Challenge champion for 2022, after competing against two other apprentices on 9 April and coming out on top.

Petros, aged 26 from Upper Hutt, is currently undertaking his building apprenticeship at CastleBuilt.

As well as winning the title of regional champion, Petros also won a $500 ITM voucher to redeem on trade tools and earned a place in the national final representing Wellington.

There he will compete against 19 other regional winners from across New Zealand for the Ken Read Memorial Trophy and $25,000 worth of

prizes. The national final will be held at the NZCB Annual Conference in Hamilton in November.

Blues and Crusaders do rugby a favour It’s clear Super Rugby needs more games like the Blues versus Crusaders on Friday night.

The Blues 27-23 win was just what the competition needed and many more astute people than myself believed it was one of the best games of rugby they had seen in a long time.

Long gone are the days when Super Rugby was appointment viewing, it hasn’t been for me for many years and that’s coming

from an eye-patch wearing, card carrying Cantabrian who has had more success following his rugby teams than most people would experience in two lifetimes.

The competition misses the South African sides in my view.

Yes, I enjoy New Zealand games, but the Aussies are a rabble at present, so much so that the Kiwi teams have to play home games in Australia to try to level the playing field.

The South Africans physical and enigmatic style of play is missed week-to-week.

They will always be an All Black fans greatest and most respected rival and not playing them feels odd and almost a blight on the game.

Crowd numbers continue to be poor, the Crusaders, while having a great team have a terrible stadium which the council seems happy to continue using.

Yes, you can blame covid for the reluctance of people to go out but even television ratings have dipped this year, to 100,000 when it used to be double that.

Super Rugby was best with 12 teams, where everyone played each other once and the top four made the semifinals.

Simple, easy to follow and fair.

There’s also a sense that the New Zealand Rugby Union and the All Blacks team as a whole is out of

touch with the common fan.

I know I feel perplexed as a fan at times listening to coaches and senior players in the All Blacks at present and like many I have no expectation that the team will win the next World Cup in 2023.

There’s no quick solution coming, no guaranteed way to put bums back in seats or eyeballs in front of the television.

Games like Friday help, but they’re rare and that’s an issue.

Wellington Orcas take title Bruce Pulman Park played host to the U18 finals of the National District 9’s Competition on a windy day in the South of Auckland.

The National District 9’s final day kicked off with the seventh vs eighth playoff as Southland vs Canterbury kicked off a southern derby. In a tightly contested match, Southland’s three length of the field tries were not enough as they went down 16-12 in the day’s first game.

Manawatu and Southland boys then took the field, with the contest going deep into golden point, where

a late try in the left corner from Manawatu sealed the 16-12 victory.

Fifth vs sixth saw Waikato girls take on Auckland’s Glenora Bears.

A fightback late was not enough for the Waikato side as Glenora won the match 18-10. Wellington then took on locals Manurewa Marlins as both teams traded blows during the half, with the scores at 4-4 going into the break. The Marlins took control of the second half, scoring two unanswered tries to win a comfortably, 12-4.

Otahuhu and Bay of Plenty girls

played another scintillating golden point affair as both teams couldn’t be separated after 18 minutes. With only seconds remaining in golden point, quick thinking from the Bay of Plenty side saw them cross over and take the 14-10 win. Otahuhu boys went up against Waikato in their third vs fourth matchup as late tries from both teams saw another golden point thriller. Both teams went into the extra period on 18 points.

When a 40-metre field-goal effort from Waikato excruciatingly hit the

left upright, Otahuhu capitalised and took the game 22-18.

The first vs second finals kicked off as Auckland’s Howick Hornets faced off against the Wellington Orcas. Howick hit first to go up 4-0 early. Wellington, however, scored two consecutive tries off Howick’s mistakes to go into the half up 8-4. On the back of several penalties, Howick finally found a way through going over in the right corner to tie the game with under three minutes remaining. A late raid in the dying embers saw

Wellington snatch the game at the death, winning 12-8 to capture the first U18s Girls National District 9’s title.

The boys saw Canterbury vs the Bay of Plenty after an early battle back and forth, Canterbury opened the scoring early and on the stroke as they took a convincing 8-0 lead into the break. The South Island side proved dominant, scoring three second-half tries to run out 20-0 winners and take home the U18s Boys National District 9’s trophy for 2022.

Major NZ road-race series joining forces

Motorcycle road-racing in New Zealand has been given a massive boost as the nation’s two premier competitions join forces to create a revamped and revitalised newlook season for 2022-23.

The hugely-popular Suzuki International Series and the New Zealand Superbike Championships are collaborating for the first time to kick-start the 2022-23 season, the people behind the two annual series working in conjunction to ensure an explosive

resumption to high-calibre road bike racing in this country.

The first two of three rounds for the 2022 Suzuki International Series – scheduled as usual for Taupo and then Manfeild, on December 3-4 and December 10-11 respectively – will now also be recognised as rounds one and two of what is planned to be a new six-round National Superbike Championship Series.

The third and final round of the Suzuki International Series is, as usual, set for the public streets of Whanganui, the world famous

Cemetery Circuit, to run on Boxing Day. In the New Year, the racers will revert back to standard track racing mode and resume their bids for national championship honours on purpose-built race circuits.

The latter four rounds of the national series will be run early in 2023, with only the Hampton Downs-promoted Star Insure MotoFest confirmed for the first weekend of March, as always.

Like the Suzuki International Series, MotoFest has become a marquee racing event, and has

been headlined by the superbike nationals for the past five years and that won’t change going forward.

The remaining three national series venues are still to be confirmed. They are likely to include South Island tracks such as Ruapuna, in Christchurch; Teretonga, in Invercargill; Levels, near Timaru, and a potential finale back in the North Island, in Taupo in March.

Organisers are keen to point out that the street racing event on Boxing Day remains a keystone in the Suzuki International Series.

Glen Eden's Daniel Mettam (Suzuki GSX-R1000), sure to be among the frontrunners when the series kicks off in December.
