Photo: Gerald Rillstone Continued from page 1 Four years ago her retired greyhound Max was attacked just around the corner from her home and the traumatic experience prompted her to call Hutt City councillor Josh Briggs asking for council to provide a better place for dogs to exercise and not have the constant worry of being attacked by other dogs.

“He came around to see me and we managed to get really good council support behind us and community support and four years on here we are,” Lisa says.

“It’s going to be good not just

for Wainui but the whole of the Hutt area.”

She says although the circumstances around the start of getting a dog park were not that great the end result will be a really good space for dog owners in Wainuiomata.

Mayor Campbell Barry says it was quite a journey with council to get to the decision of where the dog park should go and other sites were looked at.

“One of the sites was in Woburn and it didn’t work out and I think with this dog park we have ended up with a really good result,” he

says.

“It will be an addition to a pretty incredible space with the mountain bike park right next to it.”

Campbell says the section of land the dog park is on was one that had been a bit of an eyesore for those travelling over the hill and once it is complete it will transform the former clean fill site at Waiu Road into a usable area.

Hutt City councillor Keri Brown says they now have a committee for the dog park and there is a real focus on involving the whole community.

“We saw during Covid how important dogs are to people and their families and it is a real chance for people who are like minded to socialse and have their dogs socialise together as well,” she says.

The intention for the site is to leave some of the mounds of dirt to make it an interesting and playful space for dogs and add trees and top soil.

The contract to build the park has been given to Downer Construction and weather permitting the park will be ready for its first visitors in April this year.

Hutt City Council seeks feedback Hutt City Council is currently working on its ten year plan and budgets for Lower Hutt. That’s why today Council is launching its early engagement survey to ask residents what they think Council’s priorities should be for the next decade.

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says his priority over the next ten years is to get the basics right and increase investment in core infrastructure.

“For me as Mayor, investing in basic infrastructure

is a key priority for our ten year plan. It’s about ensuring our city has high quality infrastructure that supports people to move around, protect our basic services like water, and enjoy our community facilities like pools and libraries,” Campbell says.

To support this engagement, Council has launched an online survey and will be holding community sessions at our hubs and libraries to discuss the key themes and allow public feedback.

Mayor Barry will also be

hosting a series of Facebook live forums in December.

Mayor Barry encourages people to complete the survey to provide feedback on what they think Council’s priorities should be for the ten years ahead.

The pre-engagement phase will run from December to January, and formal consultation on the draft ten year plan will commence in March next year. The final plan will be adopted in June 2021.

Here we go 2021 As we look towards 2021 and all that it brings, I’d like to acknowledge the Wainuiomata community. 2020 was a tough year – for our family, friends and people we are connected to. But the spirit of the community shone through. While we rebuild from COVID-19 we have to hope that 2021 just keeps getting better.

No matter what lies ahead, I will continue to fight for Wainuiomata as your newly elected local MP. Housing is a major issue for the community, I see each day how people struggle to find a place to live that is affordable and a

good place to raise a family. My focus will first and foremost be on ongoing community engagement to build more houses in Wainuiomata. I know there is support for affordable housing developments in Wainuiomata. But it is critical that the community is involved every step of the way.

2020 showed how important it is to have a strong and resilient health system. Already we have made record investments in our hospitals and health services, including the biggest ever funding increase for DHBs, to ensure all New Zealanders can access qual-

ity care. Hutt Hospital received funding for a new mental health unit and an upgrade to maternity services last term. But there’s more to do. My priority will be on ensuring mental health support is readily available so that people can get help when they need it.

Towards the end of last year a number of concerns were raised about community safety in Wainuiomata. What became apparent is that we need community-led solutions, and we need to work together to provide the best possible opportunities for rangatahi. I’m confident that when

we work together, when we empower the community, and when we listen to those that need to be heard – we can get meaningful and long-term improvements for the Wainuiomata community. I’m looking forward to continuing the work we began last year with monthly meetings at the Wainuiomata Rugby Clubrooms.

As your Hutt South MP I want to continue to hear from you so I can best represent you. In the community, in Parliament, and as we rebuild and recover from COVID-19. Nga mihi nui mo te tau hou.

Covid-19 did little to dampen the New Zealand property market last year.

New annual data from realestate. co.nz shows that as prices soared, so too did demand with 23.0% more users searching for property nationally when compared to 2019.

Increasing by 227.8%, the number of people searching for property in 2020 also more than tripled when compared to 2016.

This coincides with the national average asking price reaching $775,976 last year – up 10.7% from $700,920 in 2019.

Bargains galore at Pataka shop

A new year has meant a new beginning for Darcelle Jansen at Wainuiomata’s Pataka as she takes on the role of running the clothing and bric-a-brac store.

Prior to taking on the new role Darcelle was working as a carer and also in the kitchen at the Pa-

taka.

“I decided in the new year to have a change of lifestyle and gave up my carer job to run the Pataka clothing shop,” she says.

Darcelle says she has plenty of work to do organising the shop after doing her research on what other shops do.

First on the list was to create a

bargain table with fill a bag for five dollars and there are plenty of items to choose from.

“As clothing comes in I am going to put it in order and we are going to also have a retro clothing area and I am getting some stands made for evening gowns,” she says.

Darcelle has also organised a

local church to take the bulk of old stock to keep so there is a constant flow of new items for customers.

“They are Polynesian and they store the clothing until they have enough for a container and then they send it home to the islands and it is turned into patchwork quilts, which is great because nothing is getting wasted,” she

says.

Added to the clothes is bric-abrac and there will also be a kids corner with books and toys.

“Even though we are giving things away we still have to present what we have got and I think if we lay the items out nicely them customers are more tempted to buy,” Darcelle says.

Appeal for information Police investigating three firearms incidents across Wellington District believe they may be linked, and are seeking information from the public.

All three incidents occurred on Monday 11 January 2021.

The first occur red about 12:40am when a shotgun was discharged from a vehicle at the window of an apartment complex

on Ngatiapa Street in Strathmore.

This was followed by a second incident about 1:15am on Reynolds Street, Taita, where a window was damaged after a firearm was discharged at a second property.

No charges have been brought in relation to these offences.

A third incident occurred about 2pm the same day, when a person

discharged a firearm at an address in Poole Street.

A 23-year-old man has been charged with unlawfully possessing a firearm in relation to this offence and his next court appearance is today, 19 January.

No one was injured in relation to any of these incidents.

“These are extremely serious incidents and we are fortunate

that no one has been hurt,” says acting Detective Senior Sergeant Steve Wescott.

“We are committed to holding the offender or offenders to account and we are following lines of enquiry, but we need help from the Taita and Strathmore communities.”

Police are seeking information from members of the public who

may have witnessed anything suspicious in the early hours of Monday 11 January in either the Strathmore or Taita areas, or from anyone who has any other information that may assist Police.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police on 105 and quote file number 210111/6662 (Strathmore) or file number 210111/7190 (Taita).

Wrights Hill Fortress Karori’s historic Wrights Hill Fortress is re- opening for public inspection on SATURDAY February 6th this year.

COVID19 has meant the world war two coastal defence battery had to close down most of last year.

The Fortress was built in great haste from 1942 to protect Wellington from enemy ( Japanese)bombardment and possible invasion. Three huge 9.2 inch guns were ordered but only two were

installed. They were scrapped and ironically sold to Japan in `1960.

Pesto and Prosciutto Garlic Bread with Mozzarella Ingredients:

Method:

• 75 g butter, softened • 2 cloves garlic, crushed • 135 g pottle Mediterranean Basil Pesto Chunky Dip • 1 baguette • 1 cup grated mozzarella cheese • 5 slices prosciutto, each torn into 4 pieces • ¼ cup basil leaves to serve

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C fan assisted. Place the butter, garlic and 3 Tbsp of the Mediterranean Basil Pesto into a small bowl and mix until combined.

Using a bread knife, slice the bread at about 1½ cm intervals without cutting all the way through.

2. Spread the mixture onto one side of the bread slices, then poke in a little grated mozzarella and a piece of prosciutto into each slit. Spread any extra butter pesto mixture over the top of the bread. Wrap the bread in foil.

3. Bake in the preheated oven for 10 mins. Partially unwrap the foil to expose the top of the bread. Bake for a further 10 minutes until the cheese has melted, the prosciutto is crispy and the bread is hot and golden. Dollop bread slices with extra Mediterranean Basil Pesto and garnish with basil leaves. Serve hot.

Now is the time to get organised with your winter gardens.

It may sound a bit unusual but now is the time to get organised with your winter gardens. With both vegetables and flowers it’s over the next couple of months you need to plant up seeds or seedlings so that you will have crops to harvest and displays of flowering plants, in the middle of winter.

If you plant late; say April through to June then there will be not much growth till the spring and then the vegetables will go to seed and be a waste of time. For flowers plants it is not a problem. Planting vegetables such as brassicas at this time of the year can be a problem because of white butterflies and their caterpillars devouring your young plants.

The best solution I have found for this is the following; If growing winter cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli from plants then check the plants you buy for the little yellow eggs of the white butterflies and rub them off the leaves so the plants are clean. Also don’t buy seedlings that are big as they are likely to have been stressed and may go to seed prematurely. Instead look for nice young plants and if a bit too small to transplant don’t worry they are good value for you to grow on till they are big enough to transplant.

I like to spray the seedlings a few days before transplanting with Vaporgard as this reduces the transplant shock and the plants stand up without laying down as you often see with transplanting seedlings. They get away to a quicker start.

Also remember to plunge the punnet into a bucket of water to thoroughly wet the mix before removing the seedlings.

This reduces root damage. When you make the planting hole, place some

Neem Tree Granules into the base of the hole alone with some of Wallys Unlocking your Soil. Also sprinkle the same onto the soil around the seedlings.

The Neem Granules help to protect the plant from insect pests and the Unlocking your soil assists in root development and supplies about 80 odd minerals and elements for a healthier plant and more nutritional value for you. Doing this only will help with caterpillar control but the next step will make sure you don’t have the pests on the plants and in amongst the curds of cauliflowers and broccoli when you harvest.

The total protection is by using hoops of alkathene pipe and crop cover mesh.

You place lengths of the pipe into the soil making a hoop thats about 1 metre tall over the row of plants.

The pipes are spaced about 50 to 70 cm apart.

Then take your crop cover which is 4 metres wide and place it over the hoops and on the windward side cover it with soil to hold secure. On the ends and the other side place lengths of old 100 x 50 (4 x 2) wood to hold in place.

This allows you to open up and weed as needed.

The rest of the time the plants are protected from insects, birds, cats and strong winds. The cover gives at 15% shade factor which in a sunny situation is also good value.

It allows rain or overhead watering with a soft wand to wet the soil still.

Winter vegetables such as leeks and brassicas should be planted as soon as. Remember to add natural products such as animal manures, blood & bone and Garden Lime. If you don’t feed the soil you don’t get the results. With

the weather being a bit unsettled in many areas which means that a lot of the summer pest insects have not been as plentiful as if the weather had been more settled.

What I have noticed as a result is very little damage by psyllids on tomato plants outside and I have not seen any white butterflies except the odd ones.

Glasshouses are a real asset and I highly recommend that you keen gardeners to invest in one before winter so you can extend your growing season.

In some areas it is the only way to grow some heat loving plants such as okra, luffa, cucumber, chilli and capsicums with a good degree of success even at this time of the year.

For instance outside in the open dwarf beans and normal type climbing beans are doing well but snake beans are struggling. Not enough heat. If you are going to buy a glasshouse type unit then the best is definitely glass as opposed to plastic or other materials. Glass may break if you play cricket on the lawn but it will outlast as many years as you can garden, otherwise.

It’s easy to clean and maintain and unlike plastic film or similar materials it is not affected by UV so does not have to be replaced every few years.

By placing quarantine cloth over the vents and doorway you can make your glasshouse fairly insect proof.

(You can take insects into the house on plant material or even in soil/compost mixes.)

With the world’s weather patterns changing it could mean a glasshouse is the only way to have a reasonable control over the environment and be able to grow the plants you want.

Timmy throws his toys, shows true colours The good boy of Australian cricket revealed himself last week as the sheep in wolf’s clothing that many knew he would be.

Captain Tim Paine, the man charged with leading the team both on the field but also in overhauling the terrible PR image the team had following sandpaper-gate in South Africa two years ago, let himself down during the third test draw against India at the Sydney Cricket

Ground.

His side were unable to bowl out a stubborn India on the final day which resulted in Paine sledging Ravi Ashwin with some pretty mediocre chat from behind the stumps.

At one point, he called Ashwin “a d***h***”, a comment which was picked up by the stump microphones.

What made it worse for Paine was he dropped three catches on the last day.

Paine’s antics are all too common from Australian cricket teams over the past two decades and while past teams have done much worse, Paine’s antics prove his nice guy act is just that.

Arrogance and the Australian cricket team go together like salt and pepper.

It’s a tried and tested combination and it is still alive and well in 2021.

Paine failed when the heat was on,

under pressure, he reverted back to type.

Despite being captain, he is a mediocre international wicket keeper by modern-day standards.

He does not have a test century to his name and while those across the ditch praise his glove-work, it is above average at best.

Now to his credit, Paine has apologised for his behaviour but it proves that culture is alive and well within

the team.

Australian teams have often got away with their verbal antics because they were a dominant team, the 2021 version is not blessed with the same talent.

The reality is, Australia cricket will always have an element of prickish nature to it.

The sooner they accept they can’t be the nice guys like the Black Caps, the sooner they can just get on with it.

Justin Morgan Wainuiomata premiers went down to Johnsonville premier reserves in the Wellington Division 3 competition by 4 wickets on Saturday. Batting first Wainui reached 235 for 5 with Tim Wilson scoring 88 and Callum Mackaness 62 not out. Johnsonville

started well in their chase and with Wainui unable to get regular wickets, Johnsonville were always ahead of the required run rate and eventually reached the total comfortably. For Wainui, Dan Hewitt was the pick of the bowlers with 2 wickets for 40 runs off 13 overs.

7 competition had a great win against Stokes Valley and sit on top of the table. Wainui batted first and reached 215 with Hewson Whiting top scoring with 59 not out. In reply, Stokes Valley were all out for 131 with Captain Scott Babot bowling superbly with 4 wickets for 12 runs.

Wainui’s 40 over team had a tough

day against Stokes Valley. When batting first Wainui lost 4 wickets in the very first over and with the innings including 7 ducks, they limped through to 84 with the help of wides and a late effort by the bowlers. Wainui did well to get 5 wickets before the total was reached and CJ who had previously top scored with 19 then having the

best figures of 3-30.

Team Brownie in the 20 over grade chased a big total of 214 vs Petone.

While they came in short with 185 in reply, it was a great effort with Josh making 57 to get them close.

Wainuiomata Premiers are home this week at Bryan Heath and play Victoria University.
