Penny’s passion Onslow College’s Penny Kinsella has been awarded the most prestigious non-playing award, the Bert Sutcliffe Medal, on the final day of the ANZ New Zealand Cricket awards, last week.

resentative, Kinsella has since devoted herself to growing the game and particularly the women’s game, establishing herself as a pillar of cricket in the Wellington community.

Kinsella earns Bert Sutcliffe Medal for life of service Continued from page 1.

The daughter of first-class cricketer and international umpire Dave, Kinsella is a teacher and was a driving force behind re-introducing cricket for girls at Onslow College in Wellington, where she is currently employed as Deputy Principal.

She has fulfilled many voluntary roles in cricket since her retirement as a player, including managing teams, coaching provincial, New Zealand A and South Island teams and squads, and three stints as a White Ferns selector.

As well as this, Kinsella was actively involved in the amalgamation of the New Zealand Women’s Cricket Council and the New Zealand (Men’s) Cricket Council in the early 1990s and, more recently, was part of the project team compiling the history of women’s cricket in New Zealand.

She still assists Cricket Wellington with selecting and coaching age group squads, and mentoring players, and is on the board of the Cricket Museum, based at the Basin Reserve.

“It was a lovely phone call to receive and I was just so humbled,” Kinsella said.

“The things I do – I do because I want to do it for people. I want to recognise and keep people from the past involved so they can continue to be proud of what they’ve done in the game.

“I also have a real passion for

developing young players and I’m hoping I can produce a New Zealand player out of that soon.

YIP Tips for Winter!

Hey Everyone, what a great Summer we have had so far! With the Welly winter creeping up, now is a great time to get your home ready! Here are a few quick tips to get your started. s Keeping the warmth IN: When was the last time you checked your ceiling / underfloor insulation? If you haven’t, chances are your insulation isn’t covering every part possible. Having some insulation moved and exposing parts of the property is like having a blanket with a hole in it.

Simply move it back, or buy some more insulation, it is very affordable. s Keeping the moisture OUT: I know I’ll be repeating myself here, but I believe this is one of the best, cost-effective way – and it is to put down a moisture barrier (usually black polythene) under the house.

By covering the soil, you are eliminating the moisture from the soil evaporating into your property. A dry house is a warm house, so ventilation is also key. s Cladding Dampness – Apart from the obvious need to paint and clean your exterior cladding, one area that most people forget about is to clear soil/paving/plants away from the cladding. Anything that is covering your wall cladding or soaking up against it will be creating moisture issues to your property. This is caused by the dampness left on the cladding and also condensation inside the walls. s Clean your gutters – If you don’t have the gutter guard system, by the time you see plants growing out of your gutters it may be too late. Over time debris builds up in your gutter putting strain on structure and eventually the gutters will be damaged and create dampness issues. s Clean your weep holes – Most aluminium joinery will have some system to drain

the condensation out, this is typically in the form of a drain/weep hole. These become blocked over time (or worse, I’ve seen people block them to avoid wind coming in) and reduces the ability to drain off condensation. Condensation if not property managed will seep into your framing and walls creating dampness again.

Newlands volunteer firefighters honoured

Several Newlands firefighters were acknowledged for decades of commitment and service over Easter Weekend.

Tim Cook received a Gold Star Medal for 25 years of service.

A Gold Star Medal is presented to a person who has completed 25 years service to a fire brigade and less than six percent of all firefighters in New Zealand over the last 140 years have received this medal.

Tim, who is a Station Officer at Newlands, has completed all 25 Years at the station.

Tim is currently the station Training Officer and ensures all members are up to date with the training requirements. Tim is also the station Welfare Officer which is a challenging but rewarding role.

Tim has taken his passion for firefighting and turned this into a career and is currently

a Senior Firefighter with the Wellington International Airport Fire Service.

With the commitment to the Newlands Volunteer Fire Brigade shown by Tim he was also awarded life membership to the brigade.

Former member Alan De La Mare was also awarded this title for his outstanding service to the Newlands brigade.

Alan was a member in the 90s to early 2000s during this time he was Secretary and Treasurer along with being the training officer and an operational firefighter.

Station Officer Chad O’Hara and Senior Firefighter Jason Francis who were awarded the New Zealand Fire Brigade’s Long Service and Good Conduct Medal.

The medal is a meritorious and long-service award for operational uniformed members of recognised fire services in New

Wellington CABs to open again

Newlands Fire Bigade station officer Tim Cook received a gold star for 25 years service and life membership.

Alan De La Mare was also awarded life membership to the Newlands Volunteer Fire Brigade on Saturday night.

Zealand who have completed 14 years of service and whose conduct is of such good standard to warrant the medal.

Retirement Station Officer Frank Simpson also announced his retirement.

Frank has served the Newlands

community and the Wellington Region for 54 years both as a career firefighter and volunteer.

Frank has served the last 36 years in the Newlands Volunteer Fire Brigade, in that time he has mentored and been an inspiration to all members young and old.

The story of the O’Gorman family’s huge sacrifice during WWI tells of the terrible toll and devastation wrought upon individual families in New Zealand during and after the war.

17 families in New Zealand lost 4 sons.

All four brothers, Thomas, Cornelius, John and Timothy were killed in France and Belgium between 1917 and 1918.

Thomas and John were never found but their memorial is at Tyne Cot Cemetery on the Ypres salient in Belgium.

Cornelius was buried at the Bagneux British Cemetery, Gezaincourt in France.

Timothy was buried at Romeries Communal Cemetery Extension in France.

Council repairing crematorium roof Work is happening on the roof of the crematorium at Karori Cemetery.

Wellington City Council contractors have begun work on the Columbarium roof at the rear of the Karori Crematorium Chapel.

The Crematorium is the oldest in New Zealand and opened in 1909.

At the time, the new fad of cremations wasn’t expected to catch on, but it did, and the niches within the Chapel were quickly purchased.

The City Engineer designed the Columbarium that wraps around the rear of the

Crematorium Chapel and it was completed in 1935 with 2000 niches.

The work currently being undertaken is to lay a new membrane over the existing roof to prevent water penetrating through the concrete structure.

In six months the work will be assessed to confirm whether the structure has dried out sufficiently to effect remedial works to the ceiling.

Upgrade of Ngauranga Gorge cycling and walking path underway from next week Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is starting work next week on repairing and upgrading the cycling and walking path on the southbound (downhill) side of State Highway 1 through the Ngauranga Gorge.

From Tuesday night (26 April), crews will begin repairs and upgrade work to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians using the path. The work is expected to finish around the end of June 2022, weather permitting.

This is the next part of the Ngauranga Gorge Safety Improvements Project which started on the northbound path in April 2021.

The southbound side will see several improvements, including widening the path at some locations, installing new cyclist and pedestrian markings, drainage and vegetation clearance. A section of the safety barrier will be renewed and upgraded to the latest safety standards.

Cyclists and pedestrians can continue

to use the path during the project.

Most work will take place at night when path users will be guided past the works. Cyclists may need to dismount and walk at times.

During the day, path users should experience only minor inconvenience, for example, an uneven surface in some places for brief periods until work there is completed. Where there is excavation for the safety barrier renewal, path users should expect a temporary narrowing of the path.

For safety at all times, we encourage cyclists to keep speeds down and for all path users to remain alert and look out for each other.

Motorists travelling southbound on State Highway 1 can expect nighttime traffic management and reduced speeds, including a lane closure and a brief period of Newlands ramp closures.

Motorists are advised to drive carefully past the worksites for the safety of cyclists, pedestrians and road workers.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is starting work next week on repairing and upgrading the cycling and walking path on the southbound (downhill) side of State Highway 1 through the Ngauranga Gorge.

Marcia puts her best foot forward In the middle of the night, huddled with her team on an island in the Hauraki Gulf, Predator Free Apprentice Marcia Welch, from Wellington, sits and waits.

She’s listening out for the pitter patter of webbed feet. It’s part of the regular work involved in monitoring WƗLko (black petrels) on Aotea (Great Barrier Island).

Monitoring the native black petrels meant working some unusual hours – including midnight shifts, which posed their own challenges. Squinting hard, you’d just be able to see the outline of these small seabirds making their way through the darkness.

Seeing these silhouettes, you stifle a giggle.

Watching their gangly waddle as they beelined for a cliff edge was certainly a sight.

But amusement would quickly turn to silent awe as they leapt, black wings outstretched, and vanished gracefully into the night sky.

“As an apprentice working for Wildlife Management International (WMIL), I had the pleasure of going to Aotea (Great Barrier Island) to assist with monitoring tƗiko over the summer breeding season.

“My days were spent checking nests within a study site that’s been monitored by WMIL Owner and Managing Director Biz Bell for over 20 years,” she says.

It’s important work for a population that’s sadly threatened.

“Once, these beautiful seabirds were recorded over the entire North Island – even as far south as Nelson. But today?

“All that remains is the remnant population that exists on Aotea and neighbouring Te Hauturu-o-Toi (Little Barrier Island).”

Since then, Mark has taken on in-house training and development opportunities and is enjoying his new role supporting a team of seven recreation staff to upskill and introduce creative new ideas.

“It’s homely and a lot of fun!” says Mark.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Clean up time: By Wally Richards Time flies thats for sure we are now only about 2 months away from the shortest day and after that has passed we are into a new season of gardening.

Starting for those that have glasshouses or tunnel houses if your summer plants are about finished and ready to remove then it is time to fumigate the house and kill off all the pests that maybe on the old plants and in the nooks and crannies.

The cheapest way to do this is to burn yellow sulphur powder inside the house.

Leave any plants still in the house that are finished as why take them out with likely pests to later infect your outdoor gardens?

The sulphur fumes will likely damage most plants in the house so any that you want to save you should remove their containers or dig them out of the soil and put them in pots.

Move these preferred potted plants to a protected place such as under a carport or on a veranda where they have some protection against the winter chills.

You could spray them with Vaporgard before or after moving them to reduce their shock of being out in the real world.

Close down all your vents leaving the door open for your escape route.

Place about three tablespoons of sulphur powder onto a steel plant such as a spade or hearth shovel.

To light it you need a very strong flame such as one used for burning weeds.

If you do not have then wet a little of the powder with some mentholated spirits and light that.

Once the Sulphur powder starts burning it is hard to put out and all should burn creating sulphur fumes which choke and kill the pests

that are inside the house.

Once it starts to burn quickly exit the house and close the door.

Leave the house sealed for a day or two before entering the house which should be safe with only a lingering smell of sulphur.

As it is winter there is no need to open vents or leave the door open to let any pests from outside enter the house.

If you grow in soil or in raised beds in the house you may like to wipe out any possible soil diseases from last growing season.

Some gardeners like to change the soil in the house each winter with the idea that it will remove any soil born diseases.

Outside of a lot of work to do so the only likely advantage is the psychological aspect you gain.

Soil born diseases are very difficult to remove as only a small amount left behind can re-infect the new soil brought in.

Also the new soil brought in may also have diseases in it and so then a waste of time.

In the past injecting steam into the soil was used by commercial growers later to be replaced by chemical sterilization.

For the home gardener this was to use a now banned product called Basamid.

Basamid killed soil diseases, pests and weed seeds and from what I saw in the spring seemed to give the soil a new lease of life as plants seem to take off.

Jeyes Fluid was also another popular disinfectant used to kill bacteria in the soil.

The product is not easily available in NZ anymore but maybe available by mail order.

The problem with Jeyes fluid is that it not only kills the pathogens in the soil but also harms the beneficial microbes which you want for a good healthy soil.

Chris and Suzy go on holiday

A new natural product is available called Wallys Terracin.

Terracin contains a bacteria that produces antimicrobial compounds which, when introduced to the soil,resets the existing soil biology.

It contains powerful beneficial microbes that beat up on the pathogens.

As it contains microbes you should only dilute it to the instructions using non chlorinated water as you do not want to kill what you paid for.

Used as a soil drench on lightly moist soil to give the soil a nice soaking as to the instructions on the label.

Two weeks after applying Terracin I suggest that you mix Bio Marinus™ ( manufactured by the enzymatic hydrolysis of fish offal, blended with humate, seaweed and biology including Bacillus subtilis, Trichoderma and other beneficial microbes) with Wallys Mycorrcin in a watering can using non chlorinated water to dilute.

Once mixed apply to the moist soil immediately as the food content in the Mycorrcin

will start the microbes breeding and it would, if left in the watering can, overflow the liquid.

Also if you were to put the two products together into a plastic bottle and seal the bottle will expand like a balloon before it explodes.

Powerful microbes for sure.

Also you may like to apply the same treatments to your vegetable garden or other preferred gardens to increase the microbial soil activity making for significantly healthier plants this coming season.

Remember that once used you do not want to destroy what you have created later on by watering the areas with chlorinated tap water.

Johnsonville childrens entertainer Chris Lam Sam will team up with Suzy Cato for school holiday fun at Te Papa today and tomorrow.

Four teams entered the Johnsonville Womens over 60s pairs event, with two of the teams winning both their first two games – so taking the competition to a third game final between Paula Meredith and Gill Oliver against Pat Maddocks and Nicola Lowe.

After 11 ends of the 12-end game Pat and Nicola were ahead 14-11 and holding shots on the head.

Paula, with one of her great shots, split the head but was able to come up with two shots, which meant Pat and Nicola held on 14-13.

Busy Easter for North Wellington football

Round four of the Men’s Central Football League plus catch up games played out over Easter weekend and the results were still enough to challenge the pundits with the best of the best starting to make themselves known.

Waterside Karori continued on their halcyon run and took no prisoners in a 5-1 home win over Wellington United at Karori Park on Saturday.

Their strong run of form has them in silver medal contention at this early stage of the competition. League Leaders Wellington Olympic retain bragging rights on goal differential as they ground out a 2-2 draw with fellow title contenders, Wellington Phoenix Reserves. Miramar Rangers were untroubled as they chalked up five unanswered goals over Havelock North Wanderers, who must surely be glad to get this fixture our of the way in their first season back in the league. Napier City Rovers were expected to do more than they did in a 2 all draw at home to Petone.

Western Suburbs did just enough to dispatch North Wellington 3-2 in an entertaining match at Endeavour Park. Wests went into the sheds 1-0 up at the break and two fine goals to Ahmed Othman for Norths in the 72nd and 82nd minutes were ultimately eclipsed by Wests substitute, Jack O’Connor, in the 78th and 83rd minutes.

North’s coach Davor Tavich had more than his chicken roll to chew over on the early morning bus trip to Park Island and Napier City Rovers on Easter Monday. The Covid catch up match had to be followed through as soon as possible according to New Zealand Football. In the end it was a 2 all draw and both teams were worthy of a point. Ahmed Othman was busy once again as he drove to the right hand edge of the Napier box, cut the ball in to Thang Thang Vanuk who slotted the ball home for nothing but net after 33 minutes. Napier equalized just before half time to tie things up going into the break. Norths looked likely again though 5 minutes into the second spell when Ihaia Delaney calmy walked the ball into the net, having beaten both the keeper and a defender after a well set up move by Vanuk and Othman. Any doubts about whether Norths could hold on for the away win were cruelly dashed by a Rovers equaliser two minutes before full time.

Just down the road, Havelock North Wanderers were hosting Western Suburbs and it was Wests who scored all the goals but only salvaged a 1 all draw thanks to an own goal in the 7th minute.

At the end of the weekend Wellington Olympic, Waterside Karori and Rovers sit in rarified air at the top of the league while Havelock North, Wellington United and Petone are focusing on staying clear of the drop zone.

National commemoration Anzac Day takes place each year on April 25 and commemorates all New Zealanders killed in war, while also honouring returned servicemen and women. April 25 marks the anniversary of the landing of New Zealand and Australian soldiers, on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915. The aim was to capture the Dardanelles, the gateway to the Bosphorus and the Black Sea, however, at the end

of the campaign, Gallipoli was still held by its Turkish defenders.

Among those who lost their lives in the Gallipoli campaign were 2779 New Zealanders, almost one in four of those who served on Gallipoli.

As always, ceremonies are held at war memorials up and down New Zealand and in places overseas where New Zealanders gather to pay tribute.

This quote made by Ataturk, a great Turkish statesman in 1934, is inscribed on the memorial at Anzac Cove, Gallipoli. It is also inscribed on the Ataturk memorial at Tarakena Bay, which is said to be similar to the coast around Gallipoli: “Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives; You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country.

Therefore rest in peace.

There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehemets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours.

You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are at peace.

Blues and Crusaders do rugby a favour It’s clear Super Rugby needs more games like the Blues versus Crusaders on Friday night.

The Blues 27-23 win was just what the competition needed and many more astute people than myself believed it was one of the best games of rugby they had seen in a long time.

Long gone are the days when Super Rugby was appointment viewing, it hasn’t been for me for many years and that’s coming

from an eye-patch wearing, card carrying Cantabrian who has had more success following his rugby teams than most people would experience in two lifetimes.

The competition misses the South African sides in my view.

Yes, I enjoy New Zealand games, but the Aussies are a rabble at present, so much so that the Kiwi teams have to play home games in Australia to try to level the playing field.

Pirates claim inaugural Trygve Cup Karori’s Pirates Swim Club added a new trophy to their collection by claiming victory in the inaugural Trygve Cup. The inaugural Trygve Cup ran for five weeks between March 7 and April 10 and is designed to positively enhance the experience of competitive swimming, develop interclub rivalries and further in-

crease participation at home pools across the region.

The Trophy is named after the late Trygve Mark Berge and is open to all Wellington clubs to participate and compete in to be named winners of the cup.

Pirates beat Porirua City Aquatics with Tawa earning the most points for participation.

Fast start not enough for Johnsonville

Johnsonville could not stop Tawa’s second half comeback in their 33-22 Swindale Shield defeat on Saturday at Lyndhurst Park.

Johnsonville led 17-7 at halftime but were unable to stop the home team’s comeback in the second 40 when the hosts had the wind at their back.

Johnsonville had made a lightning start to the match, centre Aukuso Tuitama scoring early and halfback Mark Sutton converting to put them up 7-0.

Tawa replied with a converted try in the 29th minute, but four minutes later the Hawks swooped again to score their second seven-pointer. This time it was right wing Knox Tuinasau, with Sutton slotting the conversion to put them up 14-7.

A minute later, Sutton kicked a penalty to extend the lead.

Tawa scored tries in the 50th and 63nd minutes – to lock Hemi Fermanis and flanker Weston Sao – to move ahead 19-17. Tawa added another try five minutes before fulltime, a second to Fermanis, to take a 26-17 lead.

Johnsonville remained in the fight and they scored another try out wide

through centre Tuitama, his second of the match. This closed the score to 26-22 as both sides through everything into the dying embers.

It was Tawa that came out with the last try of the contest, to debutant fullback Mofate Siupolo, also taking a second bonus point away from the Hawks.

Johnsonville coach Jason Adamson says discipline continued to be an issue but he could not fault the overall effort of the team.

“It’s another case of what might have been,” Jason says.

“The guys are really trying, I thought our scrum was much improved and when we attacked, we showed what we could do with our backline.”

Jason says he continues to try to find more impact off the bench, something which has been lacking in parts to start the season.

He confirmed Sutton was likely to stay in his preferred halfback role and take the vice captaincy with last year’s co-captain Ha’amea Ahio taking over as captain fulltime.

The result means, Johnsonville has one win and two losses so far and it makes a win against lowly Avalon a must on Saturday.
