Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry says the release of the final design for the upgrade of Queen Street in Wainuiomata is a major milestone for the community and will build on the momentum of surrounding developments.

“We are serious about investing in Wainuiomata. It’s both the largest, and one of the fastest-growing suburbs in our city, and we need to support that by investing in its key spaces

Wainuiomata Ward Councillor Keri Brown says the proposed upgrade will create a vibrant, safe and attractive place for the Wainuiomata community.

“The new Streetscape will include community assets designed to bring people together. This includes a stage for concerts and performances, outdoor space for markets and exhibitions, and a pavilion that could house a cafe.”

“By investing in the area, we can bring the re-developed mall closer to the town centre and create a positive space for the community to come together to eat, sit and relax.”

As part of the ongoing work for the Wainuiomata Streetscape, Council will continue to investigate making improvements to the existing skate area in Hugh Sinclair Park, the need for a public toilet, and incorporating playable art around the pavilion.

Greater Wellington councillors and Chief Executive Greg Campbell have signed Te Upoko o Te Ika a Maui Commitment, a region-wide agreement to use procurement as a tool for building social and economic prosperity.

Co-signed by Wellington City Council, Upper Hutt City Council, Porirua City Council, Hutt City Council, and Kapiti Coast District Council, the Commitment will see councils setting targets and spending more among Maori, Pasifika and social enterprises.

Spending with diverse suppliers will help build local enterprise capability, grow our regional economy, create a more agile and resilient supply chain and provide confidence in the region’s economic recovery.

Greater Wellington Chair Daran Ponter says with all the necessary pieces already in play, the time to act is now.

“COVD-19 has had a disproportionately devastating impact on our Maori and Pasifika communities. Our actions now have the potential to decrease the length, strength, and severity of COVID’s impact for years to come.

The decisions we make moving forward need to address the inequality we saw highlighted through COVID-19. It’s about ensuring everyone has equal opportunity to prosper in a way that benefits the entire region,” Daran says.

Research from Te Puni Kokiri, The Ministry of Maori Development, predicts the Maori economy’s contribution to the region’s GDP will drop eight percent ($299 million) from 2020 to 2021. But there is evidence from Australia showing that spending with Indigenous suppliers may help mitigate this impact, and bring long-term economic prosperity.

“We’ve seen in Australia that every dollar spent with an Indigenous supplier can create

The Commitment is the brain-child of GovTech Accelerator, NZ’s government innovation programme run by Creative HQ. The project was developed to support the region’s COVID recovery, but it also neatly aligns with the four aspects of community wellbeing (social, economic, environmental and cultural), as well as Te Matarau a Maui, the Maori Regional Economic Development Strategy.

inbrief news Back to basics this winter Police are reminding people to follow basic safety advice when heading out into New Zealand’s back country this winter.

With any outdoor activity there are risks involved, however there are a number of basic steps people can take to ensure they don’t become the subject of a Search and Rescue operation.

Tell someone what your plans are, including specific intentions about where you’re going and what time you’ll be back.

Have a plan for how you will all manage if you get stranded somewhere for a long period of time or have to walk a large distance for help.

By Gerald Rillstone Thousands of people use Camp Wainui for various events throughout the year and not only is it a great asset for Wainuiomata it also brings huge numbers to the area and supports fundraising efforts as well.

Civil Defense have done their first response training over the last few years and there is the Tough Guy and Tough Girl Challenge each year along with little publicised events like the BMW bike riders from Germany who used the camp.

from the event have helped put a new roof on the church and made it possible for the society to stay afloat.

The camp is owned and operated by The Boys’ Brigade Camp Wainui Trust, a registered Charitable Trust and local Miria O’Regan along with her husband John manage the camp and have been doing it for 18 years.

“The camps mission is for youth to experience the natural environment at an affordable cost, and we are set up for school and youth groups and church groups,” Miria says.

“It is one of Wellingtons best kept secrets and not many Wainuiomata people use it.”

“We don’t get the school groups like we did in the 80’s

when the lodge was set up.

The curriculum changed and it dropped right off but we do get a lot of the little rural schools coming and they bring with them the whole community or the whole town and they will do trips to town for Parliament and Te Papa and things like that.”

Joyce Lockyer from the Wainuiomata Pioneer Church Preservation Society says being able to provide assistance with members marshalling at the Tough Guy and Tough Girl Challenge keeps them going.

“We have nothing else, we have a few weddings and to do the Challenge we need to fill 140 spots for four days. It is hard work but we do get great

“The first year we did it, it was great because we had no money and it really helped.”

Miria says it has been a struggle to keep the camp going over the years as there is no funding or support from the Hutt City Council “We basically exist with a bit of volunteer work and with the clients that come in,” she says.

When they took over the management of the camp Miria says it was 600 odd acres of gorse that through a lot of hard work has become a special place with second generation natives, Kiwi on the boundary and massive amounts of native birds in the trees.

With club season coming to an end, why not keep the kids moving by playing Pacific Cup 2021.

From wrestling to boxing By: Gerald Rillstone Mechanic, Ian Wilde. Photo: Gerald Rillstone Total Auto Services latest fully qualified mechanic Ian Wilde has just recently completed level four mechanical engineer qualifications in record time.

Ian started on his qualifications in January 2020 and completed level three when Phil Wyburn of Total Auto Services took him on as an apprentice.

“I was lucky through Covid with the lock-down I managed to complete all the theory parts and get through it fairly quickly, with assessments online,” Ian says.

Ian has always been interested in cars and had worked on cars for years before deciding to get fully qualified.

He loves the challenge of fault finding and loves the broad range of work.

“We do all sorts of stuff here from newer turbo cars to old chevy vans and old Japanese Utes to hybrids, we do it all,” Ian says.

“As a mechanic you have to have a knowledge of all the different models.”

Phil is proud of Ian’s achievement as he completed his final level in record time.

Wainuiomata’s pro-wrestling great Paul Sayers, aka Pauly Spitfire, has given up the wrestling ring to put his energy into managing the academy.

Established in 2014 with significant support from the Vodafone Foundation and the Tindall Foundation, Cannons Creek Boxing Academy was the first academy set up outside of its pioneering academy in Naenae. With a vision for inspiring and empowering young people through the vehicle of boxing, the academy was set up with support and encouragement from the New Zealand Police.

Most recently the Trust has been awarded a grant from New Zealand

Community Trust (NZCT) of $13,918 towards salaries for Male Coach, Lead Female Coach, and an intern.

Spokesperson Paul Sayers said, “Today the academy now has two head coaches and two intern coaches, as young women increasingly find their way to the Cannons Creek Boxing Academy for a source of well-being and friendship. We strive to collaborate with the local community to support the whole young person and their whanau. We value the relationships we have with schools, law enforcement, youth, and community organisations.

“This funding from NZCT will enable us to keep our relationships with local community and school groups through our day-time

classes, funding that allows our staff to be paid for their time. It will also allow our coaches to run our membership classes that see 152 young people a week attend over four days and three different classes each day.

“Without funding like this we would cease to operate at such capacity and having a lesser impact on our community. We carry mana within our space, staff and classes.

We will continue to be a taonga to our community thanks to this funding. Our staff enable long-term engagement for our young people in physical fitness and sport, with classes for ages 9 to 18+ years.

Paul says even though he is not competing at the moment he still hopes to help out behind the scenes at wrestling events in the future.

Fisheries New Zealand is inviting people to have their say on proposed changes to catch limits and settings for tarakihi stocks on the east coast of New Zealand.

The proposed changes have been assessed in the context of the relevant statutory requirements, using the

best available science and information.

All three proposals make further reductions to catch limits for the east coast tarakihi stocks (TAR 2, TAR 3 and the east portions of TAR 1 and TAR 7).

People can make their submissions

the Fisheries New Zealand website by 5pm on Monday August 9 2021.

Following consultation, Fisheries New Zealand will provide advice to the Minister for Oceans and Fisheries for his consideration. Any changes would to come into effect on 1 October 2021.

By Gerald Rillstone With over two decades of dispensing in Wainuiomata Clive the Chemist is about to hit the 2 million mark and is celebrating by offering a free weekend away with vouchers for expenses to the lucky person whose prescription is number 2 million.

Every prescription has a number and is recorded in the system and Clive has been keeping an eye on it as the milestone draws nearer.

“I have been watching it tick over the last week and we are so close that possibly this week we will be there and whoever brings in that prescription wins the prize,” Clive says.

“The prize is a weekend for two at Solway Park in the Wairarapa which will be really

great.”

It is amazing to think in a small town like this there can be 2 million he says.

“We did one million in 2009 so it has taken us 12 years and that million was started before I started the business and so it took 20 years to get to one million and 12 years to get to 2 million.”

He says part of what has helped reach the 2 million mark is the community and the great support they give which is why he wants to give something back.

“The community has been everything to this and it is vital to put back into the community,” Clive says.

Next February will be Clive’s 25th year in business and he is pretty sure he will be around for the 3 millionth script

By Gerald Rillstone 18-yeariold Wainuiomata local Cameron Forsyth was part of the gold medal winning senior boys relay team held at New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country in Hawera recently.

Cameron was one of 5 runners representing Wellington in the Senior Boys race.

They battled the cold, mud and rain and came out on top.

Cameron is a year 13 student at St Bernards College in Lower Hutt and is a member of the Wainuiomata Harriers Club.

A majority of Athletics Wellington representative teams had success at the Interprovincial Schools Cross Country Relay on day two of NZ Secondary

Schools Championships Cross Country at Hawera. The Wellington teams picked up three of the six titles available and a silver medal. This followed on from some strong individual performances for their schools.

Top individual results were achieved

by Will Anthony (Scots College) placing second and Henry Beliveau (Wellington College) third in the Senior Boys 6km. Ava Sutherland (Wellington Girls’ College) took gold in Junior Girls 3km with team ate Amy McHardy (Wellington Girls’ College) placing second. Josh Taylor T20 (Wairarapa College) won the Para Boys 2km.

In the schools team competition Wellington Girls College and Wellington College both picked up medals in the three and six person teams competitions.

inbrief news Lumi Drug Scan evaluation report A six-month pilot of a handheld device which allows frontline Police officers to carry out on-the-spot screening of suspected drugs has shown some promising results.

The Lumi Drug Scan service has been jointly developed by ESR and New Zealand Police.

It allows Police staff to test for the most commonly found drugs – methamphetamine, MDMA, and cocaine – and receive almost instantaneous results through their Police iPhone.

In total, 25 Lumi devices were used across the five districts.

They were used at 481 different events with 884 items screened during the pilot period.

Lumi identified methamphetamine, MDMA, or cocaine in more than half of these events.

The evaluation report is now under consideration.

Wonkers for Wainuiomata

Fresh wonky veg and fruit is part of a new venture delivering fruit and veg to households in Wainuiomata It’s a new business set up with the goal to tackle food waste by rescuing locally farmed fruit n veg that is typically rejected by supermarkets and overseas buyers.

At a cost of $30 a box delivered to your door Wonky Box New Zealand is the brainchild of Angus Simms which he set up

three months ago.

“I recently returned from overseas and what shocked me was the cost of fresh produce and I thought there had to be another way to get fresh fruit and veg at a reasonable price and after visiting the markets and seeing the cheaper and fresher produce I thought there must be a way to get this fruit into households,’ Angus says.

Doing some research he figured out there was 20 to 30 percent of produce that was grown and fresh was being wasted at the source

on the farm because it didn’t meet appearance standards or it was grown in excess because the buyers weren’t consistent with their buying patterns.

“A lot of it is left in the field to rot or it is plowed back into the ground,” he says.

“I thought about a delivery service where you can get it directly to households and we hustled and knocked on a few farmers doors and got shut down initially but we managed to get a couple to supply us and it was organically grown.”

They tapped into the communi-

ty pages in Wellington and went from 0 boxes to 100 over night and Wonkybox.nz was on its way.

At the moment Angus is keeping his day job but hopes to get to the capacity where he can work full-time redistributing what might have gone to waste.

The system needed fine tuning and finally they are able to offer their boxes to Wainuiomata.

It’s a subscription box, offering weekly or fortnightly deliveries directly to households and can be paused and restarted at any time.

2. Remove chicken, cool and remove the skin. Discard skin but keep water.

3. Shred the chicken into long thin strips but do not chop.

Bring to the boil.

Add the shredded chicken and bring back to the boil.

Mix cornflour with small amount of chicken water to form a thin paste.

Drizzle into the soup, mixing thoroughly.

Mix on 1 or 2 eggs together with a dash of the chicken water, then drizzle it into the pot very slowly from about 15cm above the pot.

Garnish with chopped spring onions.

RSV is one of many viruses that cause infections of the respiratory tract - the parts of the body related to breathing. Most older children have symptoms similar to a cold.

Dr Julian Vyas, Auckland Respiratory Paediatric Specialist said, “The KidsHealth website gives clear information for parents on preventative measures, what to do if your child has a new respiratory infection, and when to seek help.

“If your child has any new respiratory symptoms, keep them at home. Phone Healthline (for free) on 0800 611 116 or your doctor as soon as possible for advice. Make sure to phone your doctor before visiting.”

Dr Vyas said, “Parents should be aware that even if you’ve seen a doctor and your child gets worse or you are worried go back to the doctor or after hours.”

Keeping the region safe from pest plants a team effort Dangerous pests Nassella tussock, Chilean needle grass, and Alligator weed have yet to take hold in our region, and Greater Wellington is urging the community to make use of its pest control services to help keep it that way.

Greater Wellington Councillor and Environment Chair Penny Gaylor says keeping these species out of the region is especially important because of the threat they pose to te taiao (the natural environment), and our way of life.

“These species in particular are a priority for us all year round, as they’re able to survive and spread throughout winter. We’re asking people to get familiar with what they look like, and keep an eye out when working or enjoying the

outdoors.

“Pest plants can be just as harmful to our environment as pest animals. They can outcompete or smother native plants, dry wetlands and rivers, reduce habitats for native animals, and grow rapidly in waterways.

“Some of these species are also harmful to agricultural land and livestock, affecting grazing land and productivity. They can be moved between farms on vehicles and equipment, so people working outdoors should be particularly vigilant,” says Cr Gaylor.

Under the Regional Pest Management Plan (RPMP), Greater Wellington hones in on a hit-list of pest plants dangerous to our region’s environment and primary indus-

tries. Species identified under the “Exclusion” control programme are those that do not currently exist in our region. Greater Wellington has a zero tolerance approach to these species and will control these pests at no cost to landowners.

Senior Biosecurity Officer Christie Carswell is part of Greater Wellington’s Pest Plants team who responds to calls from the community about potential sightings.

“We’re always on the lookout, but we can’t be everywhere at once, so we rely on the community to alert us if they’ve spotted a suspicious plant. We’ll be able to confirm if the plant is indeed a pest, and if it’s Nassella tussock, Chilean needle grass, Alligator weed, or any other plant managed under a control

programme in the RPMP, we’ll come over and remove it as well.

“If it turns out the pest is not listed under a control programme in the RPMP, we’ll still be able to give you advice on how you can

best control it yourself,” Christie says.

I and my neighbours wish to say a big thank you to the local fire service officers who came to our rescue on Saturday afternoon pumping out all the water that inundated our front courtyard and garages. They did an awesome job. Their help was much appreciated by us all.

You can’t buy happiness but you can buy local and that’s kind of the same

You will likely be aware from the news and visiting your local Supermarket that the price of fruit and vegetables are increasing significantly which we are told is due to inflation.

In fact inflation is increasing the cost of numerous other commodities as well and some are suggesting the possibility of Hyper inflation.

There are many current reasons for this such as supply chains, fuels costs, money printing, low interest rates etc.

Normally with food such as fresh vegetables and fruit it is a seasonal thing that regulates prices or the weather which can effect growth rates.

Commercially grown vegetables should be lower as we have had a fairly mild winter with adequate moisture, even if the other factor of day light hours has been low hours due to winter (Now increasing nicely) It is the other factors that are pushing commercially grown vegetables up such as increased growing costs of man made fertilisers and chemical protections. Transport fuel costs on and off the farm.

Then we have the Government interference with farming increasing their costs while stealing their land for conservation reasons.

The push to convert fertile land into forests on the pretense to save the planet with carbon sequestrating.

Here is a fact that is not in the play book of the so called Greenies: Farm Facts...50 mother cows and 80 young calves produce 80 Tons of carbon plus 32 tons are produced by tractor/equipment processing and distribution on a average farm...

But 500 tons of carbon is removed from their 50 acres of pasture.

So a farm of that size with that amount of stock and equipment including the ute is removing 388 tons of carbon which is even better than carbon neutral.

The cost of your vegetables is going to increase and so there is no better time to starting growing your own.

On the 21st of June we had the shortest number of day light hours since then the number of day light hours have been slowly increasing and soon the dormant plants in your gardens such

as deciduous fruit trees and roses are going to start to move.

Likewise vegetable seedlings planted now will respond to the increasing hours of light and grow quicker.

There is no better time of the year to plant vegetable seedlings and I would suggest ones that you can soon harvest such as silverbeet and lettuce called ‘Drunken Woman’ With both these crops you can harvest the outer leaves and leave the plant growing and producing more leaves till it eventually goes to seed.

This can mean within a few weeks of planting at this time of the year you will begin harvesting some really fresh produce.

Here is how you can go about it on existing garden plots (which can include annual flower gardens) Remove weeds by slicing under the soil to cut their roots off which can be done with a sharp knife or a Dutch hoe.

Leave the weeds to lay where they fall as they will supply food for your crops.

Spread over them some garden lime, (Wallys Calcium and Health is a good choice) blood & bone, animal manure such as sheep manure pellets, some Wallys Ocean Solids and some Wallys Unlocking your Soil.

The above will supply ample natural goodness to your crop plus up to 114 minerals and elements making the crops very healthy and tasty benefiting your health greatly.

Now apply a good purchased compost over the area to about 4cm thick.

I prefer Daltons Compost as it is herbicide free as they do not use Green waste in their compost.

Now you are ready to purchase some seedlings from your garden shop and plant away.

As with these two crops which you are going to harvest outside leaves it pays to plant a good number of them.

If you have raised gardens then also do the above recommendations for re-planting.

If you do not have garden plots to do the above then look at converting some lawn area in to a garden bed.

Pick a sunny area that is well away from trees and shrubs as too close to them you will have their roots robbing

the goodness of your garden.

Dig the area over by either turning the lawn into the soil burying the grass foliage and exposing its roots to the air.

Alternative cut squares into the lawn the width of your spade and lift that 5cm of soil and grass and stack these somewhere; (grass down roots up and leave to compost.

Now with a clear area of bare soil your can turn over to the depth of a spade leaving a trench around the perimeter which makes the new garden a bit higher than the surrounding soil.

The trench will also assist in drainage of the bed.

Break up the clods with your spade or hoe and then proceed to do what was previously suggested.

Containers/pots and polystyrene boxes are also great for growing in.

Partially fill with compost then put in the goodies as above and finish off with more compost.

You may have seen plastic children’s pool/sand pit in the shape of a sea shell, blue in colour they come as a pair in hardware shops like Mitre10.

I have used those in the past with some small drainage holes cut in the sides.

Now if the price of vegetables is going to increase then quick growing crops are what you should seek which include the likes of mini cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli.

Pak Choy is also a good fast growing crop. Dwarf beans are also great source of food Now to increase the goodness and speed the growth: every week spray the plants with Wallys Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) and add about a teaspoon of molasses per litre of water and mixed together.

The sugars will produce larger leaves and the MBL will also make for bigger healthier plants.

Sometime ago a reader suggested that I should obtain a copy of a book called The Invisible Rainbow by Arthur Firstenberg which I did and have now started reading it.

If you have an interest in your health and the health of all living things including your plants and gardens then I suggest you obtain a copy.

Waiwhetu Stream sewage discharge support the local businesses who support the area where you live, work and play

Extreme rainfall in Lower Hutt over the weekend has caused untreated sewage from the Hinemoa Street and Malone Road pumping stations to flow into the stream.

The discharges happened in the vicinity of Hinemoa Street, Waiwhetu.

The discharges were for a brief period, but Hutt City Council is advising people to stay away

from the stream, particularly near the Hinemoa Street and Malone Road vicinities and immediately downstream.

Signs have been put up advising people against entering the water or collecting food from the affected reaches of the stream.

Water sampling is underway to determine when the stream will be safe to use.

Applications are now open for twenty grants of up to $25 000 for iwi, hapu and hapori Maori projects supporting revitalisation of vulnerable matauranga Maori, thanks to the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Contestable Grants programme, announced today.

The grants come as part of the Government’s Matauranga Maori Te Awe Kotuku program, which funds initiatives to safeguard at-risk matauranga from the ongoing threat of COVID-19.

“This is a great opportunity to support iwi Maori with projects to revitalise their vulnerable matauranga Maori,” says Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Pou Whaihanga, Matene Simon. “It’s part of a much bigger process, to re-awaken the life and essence of these aspects of Maori built heritage and Ancestral Landscapes to ensure that these heirlooms of treasure will reach the hands of the future generations.”

There are ten Ancestral Landscape grants

available to support the retention and transmission of korero tuku iho as well as traditional practices within ancestral places in four broad areas: cultural mapping, maramataka, waka haerenga and kohatu. There are also ten Maori Built Heritage grants to support projects focused on revitalising vulnerable matauranga Maori within four built heritage areas: traditional buildings, tarai waka, mahinga kai, and mara kai.

Applications open: 12th July 2021 - 20th August 2021. Grants will be for projects able to be completed by 30th July 2022.

If you, your whanau, iwi or hapu have a project that would benefit from one of these grants, you can find information and a link to apply (from July 12th) on the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga website.

You will need to be able to present a plan for the project, demonstrating how the outcome will be realised in a manner that is appropriate, achievable and accessible for the hapori.

Back to the future with Shaun Johnson The Warriors have likely made a shrewd investment in regaining the services of Shaun Johnson.

It’s taken me a few weeks to fully embrace the reunion, for both sides, but it appears the positives far outweigh the negatives.

The now 30-year-old left the club in unhappy circumstances three years ago.

He negotiated an early release from his lucrative contract when the club decided they wanted to

see more before offering him a new deal.

Johnson is eager to come home with his young family.

Who could blame him? The competition is keeping the competition afloat by moving 12 teams to Queensland.

The Warriors will be getting a more mature Johnson at a much friendlier price, The Warriors should be back to playing games in New Zealand

consistently from next year which I’m sure is also appealing.

Johnson, who has played for the Cronulla Sharks since his Warriors time ended, will also offer a proven match-winner and a leader in Auckland, something which may be needed with Roger Tuivasa-Sheck moving to rugby.

Some fans are not overly excited by the back to the future move but I believe it was the best option the Warriors could get to upgrade their

under-performing halves.

No one has taken Johnson’s spot at Mt Smart since he left three years ago.

The Warriors have a poor kicking game, their last tackle options are below par and unsustainable if the team wants to make the top eight.

The Warriors had a need and they addressed it.

Now, sure, there was dysfunction when the club initially said they had no interest in re-signing

Johnson but at least they were not too proud to walk those words back for the benefit of the club.

So, while it’s not Nathan Cleary, Brandon Smith, or Jerome Hughes, Johnson is the best option available for the money on offer.

Johnson will hopefully run at the line more and use his much improved kicking game to ensure more tries, more points and more victories for the Warriors next year.

Ulalei Netball all about whanau For the Ulalei Netball Club, one of their main purposes is supporting whanau, aiga, family grow together. During the summer, the Ulalei Touch/Flag teams are made up of grandkids, playing with their dads and granddads. While in the winter, the tamariki have a chance to play with their mama, tina, mothers.

On Saturday 17 July 2021, Ulalei had two mother and daughter combinations playing in the Premier

grades. GS Careene Andrews and her daughter WA Brittany Antipas played together in the Ulalei’s top premier 1 team, Pua, against NNCU White. For Ulalei’s second premier 1 team, Aute, GA Eleanor McLeod played with her 14 year old daughter GS Drew McLeod, against NNCU Blue.

“The opportunity to play with mum, is Gold. Not many players have that opportunity. She is encouraging and supportive. I was

really nervous to play at Premier 1, so I was relieved to have Mum there, playing with me,” says Drew.

“Careene and Brittany have been playing together for years but this is the first season for Pua. They play more like sisters/besties than mother and daughter” says manager Ellen Miles. There is also Nella Belford-Stowers and her daughter Teilah who play for the Ulalei Moso’oi team. “We encourage our young players to

Pua had a close encounter with top of the table NNCU going down 49-45. Moso’oi, Fuesina and Aute succumbed to their opposition. With only four (4) weeks of the second round to go before semis and finals, all teams are determined
