Sisters Mere Wanoa and Mate Waiwai have between them given more than 60 years of service to Kokiri Women’s Refuge and after retiring still give any time they can spare to helping on committees and in other parts of the organisation.

They grew up in Tologa Bay and moved to Wainuiomata and the family built one of the first of three houses in the valley.

“I was forced to be involved by my very dear friend Teresea Olsen who decided she needed a house Coordinator,” Mere says.

She didn’t have any training in what to do or not to but Mere says a big part of her involvement with the refuge was being able to talk to women in need of help.

“I never thought I would be involved for so long and in my life I have had a really really wonderful life and violence was not a part of it,” Mere says.

“A lot of the work was talking to women and getting them to understand it wasn’t an acceptable thing to be beaten up.”

It involved convincing the women that they were worth more than what they thought they were.

Her sister Mate was alongside her and was focused on policy and

interviewing women who came into the refuge.

She says she was roped into the orgainisation by Mere’s best friend Teresea Olsen also.

“I had been working with children and young persons as a social worker before that,” she says.

For Mate it was quite a change of roll from being someone who would tell someone what they should do to someone who listened and gave advice.

What kept the two of them in

the job for so long she says was the success they did see in some cases and the Whanau Ora that surrounded them.

Sadly Mere says there hasn’t been a great improvement in the situation over the years but both her and her sister live in hope that things will gradually change.

“A persons upbringing has a lot to do with what you accept and what you don’t and a better upbringing will make the difference,” Mere says.

It was game on for all ages last week for the Tough Guy and Gal Challenge at Camp Wainui with a tough course set up to provide a challenge but also a lot of fun.

Camp Wainui provided a unique opportunity within a native bush environment and it wasn’t for the fainthearted to take on with swamps to wade through, barbed wire to crawl under, waste deep mud troughs, tunnels, lots of water and a range of other obstacles to be over come on two courses of 6 kilometres and the long grueling 12 kilometre course.

The Junior Tough Guy and Gal Challenge was run earlier in the week with a 1.5km course for ages 7 to 8, and a 3km course for ages 9 to 12.

Open night for new students

By Gerald Rillstone Wainuiomata Intermediate has finally got the chance to showcase the school after delays due to Covid and principal Craig Sharp is keen to see many parents and prospective students come and explore what the school has to offer.

It’s a chance for the school to showcase what is available and Craig is keen for as many to come and see the school in action.

A lot of local families would never have seen inside the school and he says it is a great chance for them to see what is on offer.

A big strength the school has is being able to offer a wide range of opportunities. The school has a working artist and a working musician

in the art and music rooms and the woodwork room has been upgraded with new equipment.

“It’s the economies of scale at play and students get to do a lot of things they wouldn’t normally get to do at a primary school because they can’t afford to have that sort of equipment,” Craig says.

With around 300 students the school also provides great opportunities for sport teams and the school does well playing for trophies.

“There is also the chance to find your tribe and reconnect with friends they have made at other schools in the region,” he says.

“We have a chess club and a war hammer club, we have groups of kids that do all kinds of obscure things and there is enough of them

that they find each other.”

Support from the community is key to the school and Craig says there is no need to travel any great distance to find the best on offer.

“It is disappointing to have families going over the hill especially when they haven’t had a look here first.”

“Some of the reason they don’t is perception of how the school was when they were here 20 odd years ago and they haven’t been back since and perceive it to be the same.”

The current roll is around 300 students and there is plenty of room to cater for more and what locals need to realise is every 20 students that go over the hill is a teaching position at the school.

Once again the Hutt South electorate is back in Labour’s hands following Ginny Andersen’s close battle with National’s Chris Bishop.

It was a nail-biting win for Ginny with her lead slipping to within 100 votes during the evening only to surge to a more than 2,200 lead.

Chris had won the seat in 2017 with 19,634 to Ginny’s 18,113 but the tables were turned in 2020.

Results from the evening showed Chris earned a respectable 16,531 even though National only picked up 9,000 party votes.

In the end it was Labour’s night and Chris has vowed to keep plugging away after the devastating loss.

I would get out and bounce around on my new tramp with my little sister.

Kapa Haka exchange Wainuiomata Intermediate’s Kapa Haka group took on an excursion to Tawa Intermediate last week to exchange what they have learnt with both school groups.

It provided a fantastic opportunity for the schools rangatahi to exchange waiata, meet new people and make lasting memories.

The trip was all in aid of streaming the event online so other schools in the region who had been practicing their Kapa Haka to see

each others performances.

The group of dedicated Wainuiomata students gave up part of their school holidays to put time into practicing as a group and it paid off with a stunning display of skill and voice.

Originally there was to be a gathering of all schools in the region to perform at the Kapa Haka Top 40 event but it was cancelled due to Covid restrictions.

All going well the event will be held in full next year.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Grow your own: By Wally Richards There are many very good reasons why you should grow at least some of your own food.

Self-sufficiency and a healthier food chain are two of the most important reasons especially when you need to have a great immune system and don’t want to stand in line down the street to get a few chemical ridden vegetables from the Supermarket. Then there is the satisfaction of turning either seeds or seedlings into mature plants ready to harvest.

If you shop currently at New World they are giving away little peat pots with seeds for you or your children to grow. I know at least two people who don’t garden that have followed the instructions and germinated the seeds and planted out the peat pots.

If you or your family are growing these pots of seeds there are a few things to remember; Root crops such as carrots are pointless growing in the peat pots as their

roots will not penetrate down so the best you could hope for is short stubby carrots. Take the disc with the seeds on, separate the seeds and plant them individually about 30mm apart where they will grow to maturity in a garden or raised garden.

Other plants such as onions, cabbage etc can be germinated in the peat pots but later after they have sprouted get them out into a garden or larger container to grow on to a seedling stage; big enough to lift and divide and plant out separately with appropriate spacing.

To lift and separate ensure that the area that they have developed in is very wet and with the aid of a garden fork or trowel lift the clump and divide. Some such as thyme and basil can be grown it pots that are about 10cm in diameter.

If germinating inside make sure you move them outside as soon as you see a show otherwise they will stretch to light (even on a window

sill) and spoil. I read an account this week that said: “Food prices continue rising during the coronavirus pandemic, jeopardizing food security for tens of millions worldwide.

On Thursday, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations said world food prices rose for the fourth consecutive month in September, led by surging prices for cereals and vegetable oils, reported Reuters. Food security I believe is becoming a vital aspect of future living and as my Mum would have said it’s never too early to start.

I have found inexpensive small raised gardens, sitting on concrete are easy to use and surprising how much you can grow in a small space.

I have several of them; called raised garden beds 60cm x 60 cm x 41cm tall and larger at 120cm x 90cm x 41cm which I found at the Trade Tested web site under gar-

dening. (These are currently sold out but new stock available soon.)

I sit them on concrete in a nice sunny area, place some weed mat under them to stop the compost or soil washing out over the concrete and then fill them with purchased compost and some garden goodies such as Blood & Bone, Sheep pellets, chicken manure etc.

Being made of aluminium they attract heat from the sun and the plants grow very quickly. They will keep on giving you growing space for many years to come all you need to do is top them up with a bit of fresh compost and goodies between crops. Lettuce (Drunken woman) I planted as seedlings about three weeks ago are now started to harvest outer leaves already. The raised garden beds are very versatile such as the 60cm x 60 cm x 41cm one you could plant a tomato in the middle and around it between the trunk and the sides of the container grow lettuce,

beetroot, radish and dwarf beans.

Only grow the vegetables that you normally eat though it’s also fun to grow something different now and then. Taste = Goodness.

If you grow vegetables naturally while making minerals and trace elements available to your crop you will find when you eat them they are delicious. You can apply minerals from the Ocean with Wallys Ocean Solids and minerals from prehistoric times with Wallys Magic Botanic Liquid. Stop using chlorinated tap water on your gardens as well, put a 10 micron carbon bonded filter on the tap and your garden will flourish and you will have less plant disease and pest problems.

Country and western club fundraiser By: Gerald Rillstone You couldn’t find a place with more ambiance for a country and western show than Wainuiomata’s Pioneer Church and Sunday night saw a the local club get together for their annual fundraiser.

Club members put on a show to help raise funds through donations at the door and the audience was treated to a great show from a talented bunch of musicians, some of them founding members of the 30 year old club.

Club president Denise Rurehe says the club has around 60 members from the

Wellington region.

“A lot of members come from over the hill as well from the Hutt, Porirua and Wellington because they love it so much,” Denise says.

Getting up and singing in front of a crowd is not the easiest thing to do but it was no deterrent for members who happily got up and gave their chosen piece a good shot with a range of pieces covered from, Johnny Cash hits to Pixie Williams “Blue Smoke”.

The club meets every two weeks at Fernlea School Hall. The next club night will be November the 1st all comers wellcome.

in Apple Crumble Ingredients: Apple Filling • 2 lb / 1kg Granny Smith Apples(green apples), weigh before peeling • 1 tbsp white flour • 1/2 cup white sugar • 2 tbsp lemon juice (or A solid water) • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon Topping • 1 cup rolled oats / oatmeal (quick cooking is ok) • 1 cup white flour • 1 cup brown sugar (loosely packed) • 1/2 tsp baking powder • 1 tsp cinnamon powder • 125g / 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted • Pinch of salt

1. Preheat oven to 350F/180C. 2. Peel apples, then cut into cubes 3. Place apple in a bowl. Sprinkle with flour, sugar and 4.

cinnamon, then pour over lemon juice. Toss, then spread out evenly in a 1.5 litre/1.5 quart baking dish.

Place topping ingredients in a bowl. Mix until clumps form, like wet sand. Spread over the apples, crumbling with fingers if required to get that crumbly topping.

5. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes or until golden brown.

Remove, cover loosely with foil to keep warm and let stand for 10 minutes before serving (let’s the apple filling come together).

6. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream!

ABs respond to the pressure That was better wasn’t it?

Far from perfect but the All Blacks showed more intent in all areas to steamroll the Wallabies at a place they simply do not lose, Eden Park.

The 20-minute period after halftime was exactly what All Black fans needed to see and it likely allowed under-pressure Ian Foster his first decent night of sleep in quite some time.

Key players stood up.

Sam Cane was immense in all areas.

He was a pest at the breakdown, a damaging ball-carrier and he was defensively sound as always.

Caleb Clarke was as advertised, 138 running metres which was 50m more than the next best player on the park.

The scrums got much better as the game went on.

It was a decent response to the previ-

ous week’s lacklustre effort.

The All Blacks thrived with the return of wiser heads like Beauden Barrett and Anton Lienert-Brown.

Undoubtedly the star was Caleb Clarke.

The son of former Blues’ midfielder Eroni Clarke looks to be another stellar winger of the New Zealand production line.

Ardie Savea is the No 8 of the next

four years.

The way he keeps his legs driving, pumping like pistons in contact is special.

Australia’s 34-year wait for a win at Eden Park will continue.

The All Blacks were more clinical when they needed to be.

They are still the best team in the world on the counter-attack.

The rugby public will be able to put

away their torches and pitchforks at least for a week or two.

The team handled the pressure of needing to win at their fortress extremely well.

They outplayed Australia and the score line was a fair reflection of how the middle 40 minutes of the match played out.

Wainuiomata AFC promoted Following on from a 5-3 win against the New Plymouth Rangers in previous weeks Wainuiomata AFC Premier Men’s team had one hand on the Graeme Sole cup for promotion.

New Plymouth had to win by three goals in the second leg at Prouse on Saturday to gain promotion.

On the day hundreds and hundreds of loyal Wainui supporters turned up and made Richard Prouse the fortress that it was renowned for decades ago. The atmosphere was great and I could see the boys were pumped as soon as the whistle went.

“It started very well , we were playing some fantastic football and could see New Plymouth were on the back foot. We scored in the fourth minute through Andrew Olivier with a nice driven shot at the edge of the box. The crowd erupted when the first goal went in, and when Kailan Gould started scoring in the 7th minute, then the 11th minute and finally the 14th minute the crowd was going crazy from one of the fastest hat tricks ever seen in capital football,” Avid supporter of the club Rupert Kemeys says.

“We tried to keep the boys going and go out after halftime with the same intent but in that situation it’s hard to keep going with the same intensity and the game ended 7-3 to Wainui and topped off a great season seeing us being promoted to the central league for the first time in over 20 years,” he says.

Convener for the the club Leanne Smith says on behalf of the club they would like to thank a few people who helped make this year be something that will be talked about for many years within our club.

“Firstly to Rupert Kemeys and the coaching staff for putting in the time and effort to achieve such an amazing goal. To all the Players thank you for giving it everything week in and week out especially when we didn’t think there was going to be a season. To the committee for the many hours spent making this year happen. To our sponsors thank you and on the day to Countdown, Fine Touch catering, ball boys and lastly to our loyal and very vocal supporters/ club members we thank you and hope to see you back for the 2021 season when we are in Central League.”

Trials rider heading to nationals

Si nc e sh e wa s t wo -ye a r s - old Wainuiomata’s Ella Burns has been into motorbikes and later motorcross and now at 13 she is heading south this week to compete at the Ixion Mototrials Nationals.

Sh e i s a m e m b e r of t h e I xion Motorcycle Club which is an incorporated club and is one of the oldest in New Zealand, having started in 1928.

They run monthly trials events usually on the first Sunday of every month and they have roughly 50 mem-

bers of all ages ranging from 9 to 69.

Ella says she became interested in moto-trials after watching her uncle competing and is a member of Ixion club.

She has built up a lot of confidence over the years and is keen for the next challenge.

“In the North Island championship this year I got fifth on the first day and on the second I got second and that was my first really big competition,” Ella says.

“Trials is slow and technical and you take your time and make it around the course without putting your foot

down.”

Due to Covid some of this years events had to be cancelled but she has continued to practice at every opportunity.

Her dad Shane is an engineer she says and he has made some of the obstacles she uses to practice on.

She is hoping to do well at the competitions this week as her mum has promised her a Fitbit if she gets in the top three.
