Charlotte Woolley, Ruby Mulholland-Morrison, twins Maia and Tahlia Mapakaitolo were all walking home to Ruby’s house after school when they came across what appeared to be a small sink hole with water coming out in the middle of Best Street at the intersection to Hyde Street.

Potatau Clarke was with the group and soon recognised

what was going on when the group saw the water.

“Because my dad’s a plumber I knew what was going on and told the others about what was happening and it was a sinkhole or a burst water main,” Potatau says.

The group then tried to find cones to mark the spot so cars wouldn’t drive over it and make it worse.

For the next hour they stayed signalling to traffic to slow down and go around the hole.

Charlotte video called her dad Paul Woolley via messenger who made sure they were all safe and clear of the road and put in a call to Wellington Water to come to the rescue.

Potatau says he ended up going back later and watched for an hour just in case it got worse.

Wainuiomata Intermediate School principal Craig Sharp only found out about the incident when he got an email congratulating the students for showing the school values in the community.

Craig says they showed courage and bravery along with Rangatiratanga, Whanaungatanga, Kaitiakitanga and Manaakitanga.

“It was also pretty good that Potatau recognised what it was because his dad was a plumber and his dad must be pretty chuffed as well.”

“They all displayed leadership, teamwork and bravery to work together to keep the community safe,” he says.

Wellington Water have fixed the hole.

Water safety education Huia Pool hosted Lower Hutt’s Myanmar community in January for a day of water safety education.

The community approached Splashsave following a tragic event involving their community along the Manawat River over summer. The water safety day was made possible thanks to SplashSave, Hutt City Council, and the Myanmar community working together in an effort to prevent this sort of tragedy from happening again.

SplashSave is passionate about water safety education and aims to provide community leaders with

water safety knowledge and skills, particularly supporting parents and caregivers to be their child’s first swim teacher, while also upskilling the wider community on water safety.

“One of the best things about this initiative is that parents get more involved as they see it’s something simple and easy they can participate in. It was amazing to see reluctant parents jump in and get involved with their children on the day,” Phil Waggot, Director of SplashSave says.

“We really have made a difference to this community. It was a

very powerful day in that respect.

We’re really keen to work together to spread this and other water safety initiatives further in the future,” Kay Lindsay, Hutt City Council Swim School Operations Manager says .

On the day community leaders were taught simple things they can do at home to be more water aware, including always supervising children around water and not leaving bathtubs full. They were also taught how to identify the dangers at different aquatic environments such as oceans, rivers, and boats.

In the afternoon children and parents were invited into the pool so the community leaders could show off their new skills to family and friends. SplashSave provided their program to everyone so the learning and fun could continue at home.

SplashSave is planning another community day at the Stokes Valley Pool supported by Hutt City Council. People keen to become water safety leaders are being actively sought after. If you’d like to find out more get in contact with SplashSave by emailing info@ splashsave.org.

Although he was just a schoolboy when his 84-year-old grandfather passed away in May 1967, Phil McDonald knew that the two suitcases of his Grandad’s All Black memorabilia contained some unique reminders of a long-gone era of our nation’s game.

As Mana Whenua of Wellington we have watched the protest at Parliament with mixed feelings. The genuine anguish and anger of protesters has been evident and confronting, and given our history, is well understood by us.

The impact of our nation’s public health response to the global pandemic has been world leading and clearly saved New Zealanders lives. It has, however, exacted a real and painful price for many, and for the protesters, the price has clearly been too high. We understand that, and call on the Government to urgently evaluate the options for removing and healing that pain.

However, the intimidating and threatening behaviour that some protesters have shown towards the Wellington community, and in particular, tamariki and rangatahi on their way to and from school, has been deplorable.

In recent days, our offices, our marae and members of our iwi have also been the target of intimidating and threatening behaviour because of our many

efforts to ensure the vaccinated safety of our communities. This is utterly unacceptable.

Also of concern, has been the impact on already hard pressed, small business people in Wellington by protesters blocking the streets and intimidating them and their customers. This too is unaccpetable.

Due to these disgraceful and disrespectful actions, as Mana

Whenua, we support and encourage the New Zealand Government, the Wellington City Council and the NZ Police to clear the roads of Wellington and to protect all those who have been and continue to be threatened, intimidated and victimised.

We support the legal rights of protesters, and call on them to do the same for the people of Wellington.

This from Wainuiomata local Anna Roberts, who has worked at three of the not-for-profit organisation’s homes in the Wellington region.

The current Huntleigh Home and Apartments Manager was the previous Woburn Home Clinical Manager and began her career with Enliven has a health care assistant in 2003.

“While I was still a caregiver at Enliven’s Kilmarnock Home, my manager encouraged me to apply for a PSC scholarship to complete my nursing studies. That was the start of everything for me.”

Anna worked as a first year of practice nurse with Enliven before getting further experience with another organisation.

But it wasn’t long before Enliven’s care philosophy, extensive training and the support she’d previously received lured her back to the organisation. Anna rejoined the Enliven team as a Clinical Nurse Manager in 2015.

Since then, she’s held Clinical Nurse Manager at two Enliven homes before taking on the management role.

“I’m very grateful to Enliven for helping nurture my career over so many years. I’m continually inspired by the organisation’s commitment to improving the wellbeing of elders.”

Wainuiomata bowlers win Kelly Plate

Bus route quietly goes electric Noisy diesel buses are a thing of the past on the number two bus route, the first in Wellington to be fully decarbonised following the arrival of the capital’s 55th electric bus.

Greater Wellington chair Daran Ponter says the council’s public transport wing, Metlink, was now more than halfway to its goal of having 108 electric vehicles (EVs) on the road by December 2023.

“Metlink can be confident of reaching the target, making 22 percent of its buses electric by the end of next year,” Ponter said.

“That’s one in every five.”

“When all 108 are in service, they’ll reduce Greater Wellington’s carbon emissions by 17 percent; a

massive step towards council being carbon neutral by 2030.”

Commitments by bus service operators NZ Bus and Tranzurban (part of the Tranzit Group) established the 108 EV goal. NZ Bus has 37 on the road with another 30 on order while Tranzurban has 18 in service and 23 on the way.

Metlink infrastructure and assets manager Fiona Abbott said the EV fleet would grow beyond the target, with operators Mana and Uzabus also planning to acquire EVs. Tranzurban also charges overnight at its Grenada and Rongotai depots but can fast-charge its electric double-decker buses during the day. The country’s first fast charger in Island Bay will soon be

joined by another at the Lambton interchange that can top-up the EV batteries from 20 to 100 percent in about 12 minutes.

The new generation of Tranzurban’s Tauranga built doubledeckers weigh less and have better range, Abbott observed.

“Their battery capacity has increased by nearly 20 percent and they’re about 10 percent lighter than earlier models. They can run between four and six hours or up to 130-kilometres.

“In contrast, the single-decks can run all day on a single charge. The NZ Bus smart charger will be able to power 14 more EVs expected by the middle of the year as well as further additions to the fleet.”

Clubs New Zealand has just completed its 49th Men’s Fours National Outdoor Bowls Championship.

Eighty eight teams from all over New Zealand played at 7 of the Hutt Valley’s Bowling Greens.

The teams played 8 games, with the top 32 teams playing

in the top section and remaining teams playing for the Kelly Plate.

New law homophobic LAVA (Lesbian Action for Visibility in Aotearoa) has always expressed the most serious concerns about the legislation, not only because the legislative process was undemocratic and non-representational, but in particular because its wording mandates the very practices it aims to prevent.

Eastern Bays shared path named Eastern Bays shared pathway has been gifted the name Tupua Horo Nuku.

Minister of Transport Hon. Michael Wood, Mayor of Lower Hutt Campbell Barry, and mana whenua representatives from Taranaki Wh nui, and Ng ti Toa have celebrated the gifting of a name and cultural narrative to the Eastern Bays Shared Path project.

The project will connect com-

munities in the Eastern Bays with a new walking and cycling route, and provide more resilient seawalls on Marine Drive, the area’s only road access. The project has received funding of $15 million from the Government’s Infrastructure Reference Group COVID-19 Recovery Fund, in combination with matched funding from Waka Kotahi and Hutt City Council.

Linking with the Tupua narrative

being infused in other projects underway around the Harbour and Valley, the project is to be known as Tupua Horo Nuku - telling the story of Ngake, one of the two tupua who created Te Whanganui-a-Tara and Te Awa Kairangi in traditional narrative. s 10 chicken drumettes (about 1 1/2 lb.) s Cooking spray s 1 tablespoon lowersodium soy sauce s 1/2 teaspoon cornstarch s 2 teaspoons honey s 1 teaspoon sambal oelek (ground fresh chili paste) s 1 teaspoon finely chopped garlic s 1/2 teaspoon finely chopped fresh ginger s 1 teaspoon fresh lime juice (from 1 lime) s 1/8 teaspoon kosher salt s 2 tablespoons chopped scallions

1. Pat chicken dry with paper towels. Coat chicken well with cooking spray.

2. Place chicken in air fryer basket, arranging drumettes on their sides to avoid overcrowding. Cook at 200°C until skin is very crispy, 25 minutes, turning drumettes over halfway through cooking

3. Whisk together soy sauce and cornstarch in a small skillet. Whisk in honey, sambal, garlic, ginger, lime juice, and salt. Bring to a simmer over medium-high; simmer until mixture just starts to bubble and is thickened. Place chicken in a bowl. Add sauce, and toss to coat. Sprinkle with scallions.

Commercial New Zealand growers of our vegetables have been using chemical fertilisers for many years and in doing so have killed the soil life in their soils.

This makes the soil void of microbes, EHQH¿ FLDO IXQJL DQG QR HDUWK ZRUPV To grow crops in dead soil is a bit like hydroponics, you keep feeding the plants chemical nutrients to make them grow (NPK fertilisers).

The plants are not only forced to grow but to also grow quickly which means they do not obtain the nutritional quality plants obtain when grown naturally without being forced.

The vegetables thus grown are stressed and weak which makes them targets for every pest and disease under the sun.

To ensure that the vegetables look perfect on the supermarket shelves they need constant spraying of poisonous chemicals to prevent damage from diseases and pests.

This not only ensures that the soil life is continuously suppressed but also means you are eating produce that is chemically saturated and has little nutritional value or taste.

Food growers in New Zealand have a problem then, if they cant get loads of chemical fertilisers to grow their produce you will not see much fresh vegetables on the shelves.

What fertiliser is obtained will be up to 300 percent more expensive and that has to be paid for by you the

consumer along with all the other costs involved in living, taking great price hikes. $Q\ LPSRUWHG IRRG VWX൵ V ZLOO DOVR greatly increase in price due to shipping costs as well as manufacturing cost increases.

Here is your problem in regards to food security, we are now in the middle of February only four months till the shortest day.

Every day now till then, there is shorter day light hours.

Plants need sunlight to grow, the less hours of sun light the less growth.

Ideally hardy crops such as cabbages need to be planted in summer to mature in winter.

That means the best time to plant your winter crops was in December and January.

It is not too late to plant seedlings in February and even into March but that is it as any planted after that will only slowly grow in less day light hours and later in spring when the hours of light increase they will go to seed.

Give you an example I can plant Drunken Woman lettuce (my favorite) now as purchased seedlings and they will be ready to harvest outer leaves in about a month to six weeks.

But if I plant the same in say May they will hardly grow and in August go to seed.

A waste of time other than used for the chickens to eat or dug under as a green crop to enhance the soil life.

So you need to plant seedlings now for your winter use.

They will grow during the diminishing light hours and reach near maturity going into winter when the growth is very slow but the cold temperatures keeps the crop in natures refrigerator till you want to harvest for use.

Produce that you have ready now you need to harvest, freeze, pickle, dehydrate, bottle and store for the coming months.

Our grandparents knew this and they had larders full of preserved food and gardens full of mature greens to harvest fresh.

My mum used to say, ‘Better safe than sorry’.

If you have been using a lot of chemical fertilisers and watering your vegetable garden with chlorinated tap water then you really need to restore the soil life.

Here is a remedy plan I saw on the Internet: From Dead Dirt to Healthy Soil in 7 Simple Steps: 1. Stop using NPK fertilizers. nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium (NPK) fertilizers are commonly used for trees, shrubs, and grass.

2. Stop using herbicides and chlorinated tap water.

3. Leave the leaves.

4. Be mindful of disturbing the soil.

5. Use wood chips.

6. Use compost.

7. Use animal manures.

Queen Street blessing

By Gerald Rillstone Te Huringa o Papat nuku, blessing, was held for the Wainuiomata town centre upgrade that will see the eight and a half million dollar makeover get underway this week.

A pounamu gifted by the Wainuiomata Marae was buried on the site followd by a karakia.

Hutt City mayor Campbell Barry says the 8.5 million dollar project has been some years.

Parts of the project stretch back to 2016 when people from the community got involved in a plan to revitalise the town centre.

“It essentially looked to take the aspirations from local people to have a plan of how we could revitalize the space and make it a great place for all and not only the town centre but also in wider Wainuiomata,” Campbell says.

“We know the population has been

increasing pretty significantly in recent years with more people coming here but not everyone comes and visits the town centre so we want to make this an inviting place for as many people as possible to come down here and shop local and also to encourage more shops and businesses to be able to set up here.”

Labour South MP Ginny Andersen says the team deserve a Big thumbs up for the Wainuiomata town centre upgrade.

“My office, right in Queen Street, along with other shops and local businesses, will see the benefits of this investment from Hutt City Council,” Ginny says.

“I’d like to acknowledge Mayor Campbell Barry and Councillor Keri Brown for their leadership on a project that will help to revitalise our community’s centre.”

Pathetic Proteas baffle prediction Sometimes you just make a prediction that leaves you with egg on your face.

I’m not ashamed to admit, I suggested on social media that I liked the rebuilding South Africans’ chances of tipping up the Black Caps in their first cricket test at Hagley Oval.

Wrong.

Just over two days later, a combination of brilliance from New

Zealand and inept cricket from the visitors made me look like a fool.

Fair to say I was seduced by South Africa’s gritty 2-1 series win at home against India last month and I felt their batting lineup would be better and their bowling line-up might edge out the Kiwi team also.

All of my predictions were about as accurate as a covid-19 modeller predicting daily case numbers two weeks in advance.

Dominance does not do the innings and 276-run win justice.

Matt Henry’s 7-23 was much deserved for a bloke who has been the unlucky seamer to have found himself the odd-man-out in this golden era of New Zealand cricket.

Even Henry’s 58 runs at No 11 out scored any Proteas batsman during the game - that’s how laughably bad, the visitors were.

Just 10 years earlier or 10 years

later and Henry would have been an automatic test selection for many seasons.

As good as the 30-year-old was, the South Africans made his task easier by fending and wofting their bats at deliveries which were not threatening.

Call it MIQ-fatigue or just being spooked by a green pitch that always looks worse than it is, the visitors couldn’t bowl, bat or field

to an international standard.

It was our first win over South Africa in a test match since 2004 when Chris Martin terrorised the visitors with his line and length, particularly to left-handers.

I expect the Proteas to be much better for the second test at the same venue, but on a new pitch, which starts Friday.

They cannot be any worse than their first effort.

Virtual Wellington Round the Bays Virtual Round the Bays got underway on Friday, with participants taking to the Wellington waterfront or their local streets to complete their Half Marathon, 10km or 6.5km distance. At 6:00am, in chilly conditions, the first Half Marathon took place, finishing with a time of 1:41, one of the fastest so far!

The in-person event was planned to take place on Sunday morning

but due to COVID restrictions, organisers Nuku Ora, partnered with SportSplits, a mobile time tracking app, to provide an opportunity where participants have until 27 February, to take part in the virtual event wherever they choose – which isn’t just limited to New Zealand.

This week Nuku Ora Event Manager, Patrick Pierce, spent time at Wellington’s waterfront

where a virtual start/finish line has been set up. “It’s great to see the feel-good factor of the event is still there. Lots of people have been sharing their achievements on social media and engaging in ways to win spot prizes. As participants see each other wearing their bibs, they give an encouraging nod or thumbs up. To be able to offer an event during these difficult times that gets the community active has

been very fulfilling for Nuku Ora.” The event’s four official charity partners were ecstatic to see the event go virtual. During the current RED climate, many fundraising events have been impacted.

Having the opportunity to Run for a Cause to raise funds for the charity partners despite the event going virtual has allowed for fundraising to still successfully take place.

Mount Maunganui’s Cooper exclaimed that he was absolutely thrilled with his first competitive outing on the new Kawasaki KX450F, saying it was “the best bike I’ve ever ridden, stock standard and just straight out of the crate ...”

Waitoku’s Cole Davies dominated the 125cc class on Saturday, while Cambridge’s Jared Hannon and Taranaki’s Rian King completed the 125cc podium.

Another Kawasaki rider, Te Puke’s Flynn Watts, won the handicap feature final, where riders were set off at intervals, determined by their fastest lap times throughout the day. Watts, aged just 15, remarkably finished that novelty race ahead of fellow 250cc rider Hannon and 450cc rider Cooper.

Motocross gets to race

With opportunities to ride typically closed off by COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the extraordinary chance to race on Saturday was snatched at by many of New Zealand’s motocross elite.

And one rider who had more to gain from this rare moment of brightness on the racing calendar was Mount Maunganui’s Josiah Natzke, along with his fellow Bridgestone Kawasaki Racing Team mates.

One after another, the huge annual Whakatane Summercross, the big annual New Zealand Motocross at Woodville and then the 2022 New Zealand Motocross Championships series fell victim to virus control measures, although there were still signs that the twicepostponed annual Waikato Moto-

cross Championships might still go ahead.

And so, when the green light was eventually given by the host North King Country Motorcycle Club that their event would still run, albeit carefully managed under health guidelines, racers and their support crews flocked to the Waikato Motocross Championships track just outside Te Kuiti on Saturday.

It was a Who’s Who of Kiwi motocross talent that arrived for the one-day spectacle on Saturday, all of them keen to get back to some serious racing.

The 23-year-old Natzke, who is next month due to head to the United States to compete in the nationals there, was especially keen to complete some “training” and test himself against fellow New Zealand championship-level riders, before he boards his flight on March 15.

And it could not have gone any better for the Kawasaki star.

Natzke recorded three wins from three starts in the MX2 (250cc) class on Saturday, finishing ahead of KTM’s multi-time former national MX2 champion Harwood and Tauranga’s Brodie Connolly (Yamaha).

“I’m really gelling with the bike.

We’ve used the same settings from the year before and it feels great,” said Natzke.

“It has been hard for everyone to get motivated (because of the pandemic). I knew everyone would be here and, while not everyone is on their A game, but it’s been able to race with all the top guys again.

“I leave for America next month and I’ll be there for three or four months. I’ll race the first couple of rounds of the US outdoor nationals in the 250cc class, riding for Kawasaki. I just need to see where things
