April rollout for half price bus fares Metlink has confirmed that half-price fares for ferry, train, bus and total mobility services will come into effect on Friday April 1.

The move follows the Government’s announcement that public transport fees across the country would be temporarily reduced to help ease the burden of cost of living increases over the next three months.

Scott Gallacher, General Manager for Metlink, says his team is working closely with operators to make the transition as smooth as possible for passengers but there might be teething issues given the very short lead-in time we have had.

“We’re very pleased to be able to put these discounts in place in such a short timeframe and help people continue to connect with their communities, to get to and from work and get children to school.

“For the majority of our passengers on buses and ferries the changes should be seamless with Snapper and cash fares being adjusted in time. However, paper tickets and multiple trip tickets on rail are more complicated but I want to reassure passengers that they won’t be out of pocket as we work out the kinks,” Scott says.

“Obviously, COVID-19 continues to put a strain on the availability of our amazing frontline staff so we’re hoping that people will continue to understand the impact that COVID-19 is having on our network at the moment, including with an increase in unplanned cancellations as a result of staff absenteeism.

“I also want to thank all of Metlink staff and passengers for their ongoing patience, kindness and understanding,” adds Scott

Gallacher.

Metlink also announced that it will be retiring the fixed fare structure for after-midnight services and bringing them in line with standard off-peak fares. The move had been planned for July but had been bought forward to April 1.

Roger Blakeley, chair of Greater Wellington’s Transport Committee says the changes to after-midnight fares will provide greater consistency, accessibility and safety to people across the region.

HUB hosts Raving Beauties

What started out as an exercise class for a group of lady’s in Wainuiomata has become a weekly social event at the Wainuiomata HUB where the group who call themselves the Raving Beauties gather.

Meeting every Monday, come hell or high COVID, they have created their own answer to the ills of the world, most of it humorous.

It is testament to the power of a

cuppa and a natter that the group has been together for the last six months forming a close bond and enjoying each other’s company.

Val Harper started it all after attending an exercise class at the HUB. One day she decided to ask another member for a coffee.

“I invited one of the members of the exercise class to come over to the coffee shop after we finished exercises and the other ladies came along and we had 12 around one table for four so you can imagine what that was like, so

we decided we were obstructing other people coming into the coffee shop and asked if we could meet in the HUB and here we are,” Val says.

“Annie Reilly from the HUB needed a name so a table could be reserved for us and I came up with the Raving Beauties.”

They decided to keep the group small and their seven members also go out for meals once a month.

At the HUB they bring their lunch and their own tea bags and

hot water and the conversation ranges from what’s happening in the world to kids, home life, books.

It is an all women group,” I think some of the conversations and what we talk about, men wouldn’t want to be involved in,” Val says.

And they have had their moment of fame winning a video competition run by the HUB, taking home a $150 voucher from Countdown and $50 of goodies from The Bakery in Queen Street.

Concern over copper wire

Coast Road Wainuiomata resident Dorothy Gallagher is concerned that once the old telecom copper wire system is decommissioned it may leave those who rely on it in the lurch.

Dorothy lives 2 km past the Remutaka Forest Park and in that area there is no mobile reception.

She was recently notified by

her provider Vodafone that they would no-longer provide services over copper wire.

They are cutting off the service on the 25th of March.

She has a medical alert alarm which goes through the landline and it won’t work over the modem Vodafone has supplied.

Chorus own the lines and as Dorothy understands the copper line is leased by Vodafone.

“They want to get rid of all the nuisance people on the copper wire,” she says.

Added to the problem if there is a power cut, even with a working modem, there is no way of communicating, and her medical alert alarm won’t work.

“They did offer a mobile phone for free and that’s OK but we don’t have mobile coverage here so that’s like throwing a par-

achute to a drowning man,” Dorothy says.

There is one company she says that will transfer her system over to the copper for as long as Chorus provides the copper system.

“They are called NOW Broadband and are Napier based and their call centre is in New Zealand but when they no longer have copper wire we will have nothing.”

Euthanasia Dear Editor, As I sat with my Coffee reading the latest stuff news and saw the article on Maddie Blitvich. I was reminded that I too was not expected to live as a baby. It made me glad I voted against Euthanasia. I pray that those who voted for it will help me draw a line in the sand when it comes to

the age for opting out of this world being lowered and pressure put on parents to agree to it for children who cannot speak for themselves or are too young to appreciate how big a hole they will leave behind them in this world.

The online social enterprise, launched by not-for-profit Enliven positive ageing services back in 2020, is aimed at the New Zealand older adults and their families.

ShopEnliven.org.nz has quickly become a one-stop shop for elders, says Enliven General Manager – External Relations, Alisha Kennedy.

Items include, gifts, books, entertainment, daily living aids and specialty products for people with conditions like dementia, lowvision and incontinence, and specifically modified food and beverages.

“We’d been getting feedback from the elders we support and their wh nau that they often couldn’t find products that suited their needs,” Alisha explains.

“People might not even know we have a selection of items available to make life easier and that they can visit a single website to find what they need.”

A growing selection of gifts for older people is offered which have been specially chosen for those who have had to downsize their living environment.

“We often hear families saying they struggle to find gifts for their older relatives, including those living at rest homes, and that got us thinking about how we could help. We’re working on a great range of gifts,” says Alisha.

Former Wainui journalist on stage Former Wainuiomata News journalist Megan Connolly has taken up her passion for acting and is a non-binary actor, improviser and comedian based in Wellington.

From childhood Megan has had a passion for the arts and along with childhood friend Nina Hogg they began improving at school from a young age. Their current projects include writing, performing and producing content for sketch comedy groups Captain Caketin and 5G Horse, both on stage and in filmed formats online. Megan is part of the newly revived improvised comedy group Friends Without Benefits and the new experimental improv/ devised bi-weekly show Wet Soup.

What does toxic masculinity, drinking beer, being a rural lad, and the exploration of queer identites equal? Jez and Jace, of course!

Jez & Jace is an improvised comedy/drama show from 30 March to 2 April at BATS Theatre, and satorises regional Aotearoa’s

treatment of men, masculinity and homosexual relationships.

Jez & Jace were born from the minds of comedy duo, Nina Hogg and Megan Connolly (Ginge & Minge) one night. All it took was accidentally diving head first into two toxic male characters with Captain Caketin Sketch Comedy’s Valentine’s Day show in 2021.

From there, Jez & Jace were officially born.

Jez & Jace’s first debuted as ‘BROsplained’ in July 2021, competing in Late Night Knife Fight and became an instant audience favourite. They then headlined in September with a 30 minute version.

Both comedians grew up in rural towns, with Hogg in Canterbury and Connolly in rural Victoria, Australia, while exploring their own queerness and how to navigate it in a small community.

wasn’t really talked about or seen prominently on TV,” Megan says.

“As I was coming to terms with my sexuality and identity in my last year of high school, I was afraid to open up to my peers

because rural Australia wasn’t necessarily the most understanding.”

“Here in Wellington, we live in a bubble where we think everyone and everywhere is as accepting and open as we are, but in reality,

young people are still facing the same homophobia and fear that we did.” “This show is a reminder that we still have a way to go.”

Congratulations to Adam Smith who has been awarded Kapura Volunteer of the year at the Capital Football 2021 awards.

Adam has been involved with the Wainuiomata Football Soccer club since he was 5 years old.

He has been a player, coach, supporter, and general go-to man to assist with anything that is required for the club.

When an U9 team needed a coach in 2020, Adam stuck

his hand up, and he continued to coach them in 2021 too.

He coached the women for 10 years and only recently stood down from that role but still helped out with refereeing their games.

In 2021, Adam managed the men’s first team along with helping set up the grounds for matches.

His commitment, enthusiasm, and love for Wainuiomata Football Club and the game makes Adam a worthy recipient.

Blooms needed for Pioneer Church Wainuiomata’s Pioneer Church custodians are looking to add to the beautiful Church gardens with another larger show of daffodils.

They are calling on all Wainuiomata Gardeners to help out.

They intend to continue the extensive planting of daffodil bulbs in the beautiful gardens surrounding the Church and are

asking any of our local Gardeners to contribute any spare bulbs they may have in their gardens.

Vaccination camper in the suburbs

Kokiri Marae Keriana Olsen Trust’s vaccination camper is at last out and about in the suburbs giving residents an easy option to get their vaccinations.

With booster vaccinations underway at Wainuiomata Marae the launch of a second line of defence against COVID Kokiri Marae’s mobile clinics in campervans has had to be delayed due to a lack of staff.

The buses have now been taken off the road and the smaller campervan units are able to access areas the bus couldn’t get to.

Last month Kokiri Marae General Manager Teresea Olsen put out the call for staff to run

the campervans to be deployed in the Lower Hutt suburbs in areas of high need.

Vaccination nurses Ladonna Gorden and Rerehau Bakker answered the call and were in Wainuiomata with one of the campervans this week.

Ladonna says there has been a steady number of people getting vaccinations and some of them for the first time.

“We are just trying to reach out to our lower decile communities where our stats are the lowest and we don’t really know the numbers of those vaccinated,” she says.

“We are getting the word out online with Facebook letting people know where we are going to be.”

Air-Fried Apple Chips With Almond Yogurt Dip )

Ingredients: s 1 (8-oz.) apple (such as Fuji or Honeycrisp) s 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon s 2 teaspoons canola oil s Cooking spray s 1/4 cup plain 1% low-fat Greek yogurt s 1 tablespoon almond butter s 1 teaspoon honey

Coat air fryer basket well with cooking spray. Place 7 to 8 apple slices in single layer in basket, and cook at 375°F for 12 minutes, turning the slices every 4 minutes and rearranging slices to flatten them, as they will move during the cooking process. Slices will not be completely crisped, but will continue to crisp upon cooling. Repeat with remaining apple slices.

While apple slices cook, stir together yogurt, almond butter, and honey in a small bowl until smooth. To serve, place 6 to 8 apple slices on each plate with a small dollop of dipping sauce.

Changes to rates remission Greater Wellington Regional Council proposes to make changes to the Rates Remissions and Postponements on M ori Freehold Land Policy. This will become known as the Rates Remissions on M ori Land Policy.

Greater Wellington is reviewing the policy following changes to the Local Government Act 2002 and Local Government (Rating) Act 2002 that took effect in July 2021, which included significant changes to the rating of whenua M ori. The proposed changes to the policy will ensure it is up to date and compliant with the legislation for rating of whenua M ori and the principles of Te Ture Whenua M ori Act 1993, and offer wider support to owners of whenua M ori to look after the whenua for current and future generations.

While this policy particularly affects M ori landowners in the Wellington region, everyone in our community may have an interest and is invited to provide a submission on the proposed

changes to the policy.

As part of the review of this policy, Greater Wellington has considered the option of retaining the existing policy and has decided instead to consult on the proposed changes in this document as these better align with Council’s strategic priority of improving outcomes for mana whenua and M ori, and with Council’s adopted M ori Outcomes Framework.

All councils are required to have a policy on rates remissions and postponements on M ori freehold land.

This policy sets out the criteria under which Greater Wellington will consider applications for remissions and postponements on M ori freehold land in the region.

A rates remission is when Council agrees to waive the obligation to pay rates on a property in a particular financial year. A postponement is when Council agrees that rates for a particular financial year can accumulate against the property to be paid in the future.

Apple cider vinegar : By Wally Richards A reader and keen gardener sent me an email recently about using apple cider vinegar in your garden to prevent and control fungus diseases.

I use Apple cider vinegar to keep fungal diseases away, including brown rot, curly leaf, black spot, powdery mildew, bladder plum, sooty mould, scab, allium rust (for garlic, onions, shallots), etc.

For fruit trees, vines, plants, vegetables and herbs, including garlic. Also for roses and other ornamentals.

I’ve been doing this since 2009 for my stone and pip fruit trees, berry and grape vines, citrus, garlic, shallot and vegetable plants throughout my large garden, including for roses.

Vinegar kills mould - which fungal species are.

It also prevents mould growing back in places that are prone to having fungal problems, so helps avoid ongoing fungal problems.

I use 250mls apple cider vinegar (ACV) mixed with 5 litres water in a ¿ YH OLWUH VSUD\HU , NHHS MXVW IRU $&9 I spray the mix when fruit tree buds DUH RQO\ MXVW EHJLQQLQJ WR VKRZ LQ spring as small bumps.

I don’t spray when blossoms are showing, leaving them to bees, bumblebees and other little critters for pollination.

Once blossoms have finished, I spray fortnightly on the fruit trees and plants which are prone to fungal problems ie. brown rot on stone fruit, sooty mould on citrus, black spot on roses, rust on aliums, etc.

I stop once all the fruit on each tree are harvested.

Spray the mix in the evening when WKH VXQ KDV MXVW JRQH R൵ \RXU WUHHV or plants, so the sun isn’t heating/ burning leaves through the liquid spray droplets on them, and there’s time for the spray to dry before nightfall.

Spray the whole tree, vine or plant under and over leaves, the trunk, branches, twigs, fruit everything.

This will also feed the tree through the leaves (when they are there for deciduous trees) as a foliage food.

I do this for all my fruit trees, vines,

plants, stone and pip fruit, citrus, grapes, berries, including strawberries, plus for garlic, shallots, onions, courgettes, cucumbers, pumpkins, tomatoes, roses.

No need for gloves or coverings as it’s good for us too. , NHHS D ¿ YH OLWUH VSUD\HU ¿ OOHG ZLWK the ACV and water mix, so I can pick it up, pump it to build pressure, and I’m ready to spray this mixture that is good for my garden.

That’s a good tip as you can leave in the sprayer what is not used for next time and if you are going to follow this advise, using apple cider vinegar a separate sprayer for this purpose is a good investment.

The ACV mix works as a foliage food through the leaves with that feeding them, plus fungal problems not being an issue, the trees, vines and plants grow strongly. A healthy, strong tree or plant will repel disease, PD\EH UHSHO LQVHFWV OLNH ZKLWHÀ \ DQG vine hoppers, etc, too.

Decided to try ACV due to the goodness of the apples that it’s made with, had excellent results and have continued since for brown rot, black spot, curly leaf, allium rust, sooty mould, powdery mildew, etc., all the fungal problems that occur often in our NZ gardens.

When my trees were producing well, I contacted the head tutor of

the horticulture course at the local polytech, asking if I could swap a box of freshly picked Golden Queen Peaches in exchange for him showing me how to summer prune.

He also has a six acre home orchard.

I showed him around my garden, he kept saying, how have you got your trees so healthy.

I told him about using the ACV mix and why.

As he left, he picked a Golden Queen Peach out of the box, bit into it, said, now that’s how a Golden 4XHHQ VKRXOG WDVWH DQG ,¶P R൵ KRPH to start using apple cider vinegar throughout my garden?

Also - ACV for cats: I add 1/4 teaspoon of ACV to our cats food each morning - have done this since 0DUFK QR À HDV DQG WKH\ KDYH shiny soft fur.

Sometimes it is the simple things that we forget about or more likely do not know about and can be very surprised when found to work.

I have now added a two litre apple cider vinegar to our mail order web site in the disease control section so that when you are ordering your other garden bits you can add in this well priced product.

White Ferns falter in big moments The White Ferns have failed to handle the pressure of a World Cup at home.

The New Zealand women’s cricketers have been extremely poor throughout the tournament, losing close games and suffering consistent middle-to-lower order batting collapses which they seemingly never learned from and therefore they’ve almost certainly missed the semifinals.

The team just hasn’t done the basics well enough.

They haven’t batted out their 50 overs on several occasions which

cost them at least two games including Sunday’s must-win game against England where they went down by one wicket.

That result should be a sobering reality check to the players, coaching staff and New Zealand Cricket as a whole that despite having all the comforts of home, they were well off the pace.

New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White was in attendance at Eden Park to watch the team play England on Sunday.

Hopefully, as he watched another batting collapse from the hosts, he

realised that the women’s game needs more investment so it can keep up with the likes of Australia, England, South Africa and India.

The team has seemingly lacked an identity during this tournament.

Short of hoping the top four batters score all the runs, there seems to be little plan B, C or D being thought of.

White Ferns bowling coach Jacob Oram acknowledged, during a radio interview, the team did not have a mental skills coach and any such work mentally was only done at a regional level.

That is simply not good enough because the team was exposed mentally and tactically time and time again all tournament.

Womens players are paid a terribly small amount to play cricket in this country.

Until there is a contracted list of national players paid a respectable wage which allows them to focus on their craft full time, New Zealand will continue to slip off the pace.

Player selection has been baffling at times, as I mentioned last week, there is no Leigh Kasperek in this side for reasons not yet explained.

The middle-order batters did not know their role and the same can be said for the bowlers charged with completing the death overs.

Some of the players have the talent but they need more support financially and professionally.

Hopefully New Zealand Cricket do a full review into the campaign because it’s been a shambles to watch as a fan.

If there was a big moment in a game, the White Ferns came up short.

Everyone involved must take some accountability and learn from it.

Catching the running bug with Harriers Wainuiomata At the age of 14, Nikki Braniff (now Braniff-Jones) was introduced to the world of training, and harriers, by her PE teacher Janette Terry (now Melrose).

Initially Nikki remembers Janette asking her and three other girls at Wainuiomata College if they wanted to start a six week training program. They all agreed, and after six weeks there were two left. Nikki, and her friend of 34 years Virginia Pycroft. After the six weeks Nikki remembers thinking “well that was fun”, not realising that the next six week program was on its way.

During the following four years at college Nikki enjoyed many successes which included representing her school as well as representing the Wainuiomata Harrier club and the Wellington centre at many North Island and New Zealand athletic, cross country and road running competitions.

She won several medals on the

track at these events but one of her highlights would be winning double gold at the Wellington cross country championships and Wellington road running championships for four years straight as a junior.

“Junior racing was always fun.

We would race in the championship events during the year and then wait to see who was going to be chosen to represent Wellington at the North Island cross country champs, always held in Taupo, or the New Zealand cross country or road racing championships. We loved going to the North Islands in Taupo because it was (and still is) a fantastic course on Spa Park, and we would get a weekend away with our friends. I’ve made some amazing running friends over the years.”

Nikki has been coaching junior (and some senior) runners for about 8 years now, with a stint when she was studying Exercise

Science. The kids she currently trains mainly come from Wainuiomata, and “there is some real talent there.

“Running is hard work and requires a lot of dedication and discipline. A lot of kids just don’t have that but it also needs to be encouraged and nurtured by their parents.”

Recent successes for Nikki have included a couple of podium finishes at the Wellington Mountain Running Championships, held

in Wainuiomata on a challenging course on the hills between Wainuiomata and Lower Hutt.

She also finished 3rd in the New Zealand Mountain Running Championships when they were held in Wainuiomata. “I was a gutted as I was in 2nd place but then took a wrong turn towards the finish. It’s just one of those things, but I’ll never do it again!”

The Wainuiomata Harrier Club are now starting their 2022 season, so anyone wanting to join up can

either pop along to the club on Saturdays at 1.45pm at Richard Prouse Park, or ring Nikki on 021 02348292. They also have Tuesday and Thursday training sessions in Wainuiomata, and a Sunday run from various locations around Wainuiomata and the Hutt.

A couch to 4km has just started too, meeting on Wednesdays at 6.30pm at “The Rock” by the roundabout on the corner of Fitzherbert Street and Parkway Extension.

Wellbeing changes for Wellington regional sport Six major sports organisations have agreed to improve the experience for players and parents by aligning their respective season transition dates.

In a first for Wellington, College Sport Wellington, Netball Central, Wellington Hockey, Capital Football, Wellington Rugby,

and Cricket Wellington have unanimously agreed to align their season structures when the winter sport season commences in Term 2. The winter season will begin no earlier than the week beginning Monday 2nd May, 2022.

In early conversations, RSOs recognised that lengthy competition structures and high-volume training requirements in some codes were causing workload

issues and scheduling clashes.

This was having a negative impact on participant wellbeing, and all codes agreed to review their core season length, with a view that aligning seasons will allow room for rest and recovery and enable youth to participate in both summer and winter sports.
