A Karori community planting day will be held on the old St John’s Church site from 10am to 2pm on Saturday 27 January.

Wellington City Council owns the site, on the corner of Karori Road and Campbell Street.

The council is planning to find a developer for the site and the tender process to find a developer is scheduled to begin soon.

“In the meantime, to bring more vibrancy to the area, we’ve issued a temporary licence to local organisation Boston Projects

to occupy and use the site,” the council says.

“They’ll be partnering with Foxtail Events to bring a range of community activities to the site, like pop-up shops, events, and space for local artists.”

The first of these activities is the community planting day.

“The whole of Karori is invited to attend and participate in this fun day out,” Foxtail Events says.

“This grass roots initiative is fully reliant on the support of the Karori community and there are a number of ways that you can contribute to this project.

“For starters, we are looking for people who would like to donate or sponsor some plants.

“This could be native grasses and bushes, succulents, flowering plants, wildflowers, bulbs, herbs, or edible plants for example. Anything will be considered.

“We are also looking for a local talented artist to create a mural and someone to regularly help keep the section tidy with some trimming of the grass.

Strong interest in Event Centre petition The petition launched last week asking Wellington City Council to keep its commitment to “fund, finish and open the Karori “Event Centre” is attracting strong interest.

People are adding comments in support of the petition, with many describing the value they see that the new Event Centre will deliver.

“The Karori Event Centre will be a prized asset to Karori and surrounding suburbs,” Penny Murdoch, of the Karori Business Association says.

“This is a building that will add to the heart of Karori, increase footfall for our businesses, and be a social resilient community space at time of emergency.”

Kelburn Resident, Susan Henry said it “would be wonderful for

adults, children and families to be able to use the space for events, classes and local productions.”

“The unsolicited comments in the petition are heartening,” says Heather Baldwin, the Deputy Chair of the Karori Community Hall Trust.

Those comments “show the strength of support in the community to fund, finish and open the Karori Event Centre.”

People can sign the petition online at KaroriEventCentre. co.nz, at Karori Community Centre weekdays from 9am to 2pm, or at Marsden Books.

The Event Centre was gifted to the council in December 2022, after they had earlier committed $1.9 million to fit it out.

The popular Khandallah swimming pool was particularly well attended during the fine and warm Wellington anniversary weekend.

Local resident Sharon Major visited the pool on Sunday afternoon and found that it was very busy, with around 70 people enjoying being in the water.

The pool temperature was warm, too, at around 23 degrees.

“It is so wonderful that the pool is open, not heated, and a perfect place for the whole family to enjoy, specially on a wonderfully warm Sunday afternoon,” Sharon says.

“I’m very keen for it to stay as a community facility.”

Wharangi/Onslow-Western Ward Councillor Diane Calvert is also very interested in the future of the pool Last week Cr Calvert told the “Independent Herald” that Wellington City Council needs to make much more rapid progress on upgrading the pool.

The council decided to upgrade the pool nearly two years ago, allocating a budget of $8 million.

However “we are still only at an option stage,” Cr Calvert says.

Charity walk for Parkinson’s Wellington’s Sea to Skyliners charity walk, organised by Khandallah resident Steve Tribe, will take place on Saturday 3 February.

This year the walk will raise funds for Parkinson’s New Zealand.

Parkinson’s is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world, with no known cause or cure, and affects more than 12,000 New Zealanders.

Walkers will start in Khandallah Park and hike to Island Bay via Mount KauKau Tarikakaā, walking up, down and along the green hills that encircle Wellington – all in the one day.

It is a 42km journey – the same length as a marathon.

Among the walkers is Jennifer Andrewes, who was diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s in 2019 at the age of 48.

Jennifer lives with the impact of

the condition, making the most of life and opportunities.

In the past two years, she has walked a total of 1800km across France.

Next on her list is the ancient 2400km Via Francigena from Canterbury to Rome.

This year will be her fourth charity walk with the Sea to Skyliners group that Steve set up in 2020.

“After completing the third walk in 2023, I thought I’d done my dash but when Steve suggested fundraising for Parkinson’s New Zealand, I could hardly say no!

I’m grateful to be walking with this fantastic bunch of friends and colleagues, and for such a good cause,” Jennifer says.

“Parkinson’s New Zealand is a small organisation doing great work, and every dollar counts towards making it easier for those of us with the condition to live and

work well with it.

“The 42km for Parkinson’s feels appropriate because living well with this condition is a marathon, not a sprint,” she says.

“And walking helps ward off the symptoms.”

The Sea to Skyliners’ charity walk has previously raised funds for the Cancer Society, the UNICEF relief efforts in Ukraine, and Red Cross for its disaster relief following the severe weather events on the east coast of the North Island.

Glenside Reserve community walk

The Glenside Progressive Association is hosting the Glenside Reserve community walk on Sunday 28 January, starting at 1pm.

After meeting at the historic Halfway House, Glenside Reserve, the walk will be a guided tour over a pre-arranged route giving people the opportunity to speak up and share their knowledge and thoughts with the group.

The 1.5 hour walk will cover the hill, the pond, the stream, the concrete dam, the flat area (former sewage ponds) and past history, including the railway viaduct, railway camp, golf course, farm, army camp and saleyards.

Diarrhoea and vomiting are not diseases themselves but are symptoms that can have many possible causes.

When either diarrhoea or vomiting occurs then the body can lose a lot of fluid and become dehydrated. It is very important to get fluid replacement and become rehydrated again.

There are a number of different reasons for diarrhoea and vomiting to occur.

One very common cause is a gut infection (‘gastro’) from either viruses (e.g.: noravirus), bacteria (e.g.: salmonella), or parasites (e.g.: giardia) from contaminated food or water.

Leaving food out of the fridge, possibly, is a common cause for food going ‘off’ due to contamination. In many cases, the ‘gastro’ is only a short-term inconvenience and the diarrhoea and vomiting tend to go away within a few days.

However if the symptoms go on for longer, then a visit to the doctor is advisable. Vomiting and diarrhoea causes the loss of body fluids and important electrolytes (salts), and if it goes on for a longer period of time can result in dehydration.

Babies under 12 months of age are particularly prone to diarrhoea and vomiting from contaminated food and drink and they can become dehydrated very quickly- for example the bottle of formula milk left out of the fridge.

“Look out”, caution Self Care pharmacists, “for the danger signs of dehydration - dry mouth, tongue and lips, reduced skin elasticity, sunken eyes and cheeks, weakness, little urination.

Diarrhoea and Vomiting if the symptoms continue for longer than 3 hours (for vomiting) and 24 hours (for diarrhoea).”

The best treatment for ‘gastro’ symptoms is drinking plenty of fluids such as oral rehydration solutions. These contain the right amounts of electrolytes, glucose and water to replace lost nutrients.

“A range of replacement fluids products are available from our pharmacies” advise Self Care pharmacists “and we can provide you with a copy of the Diarrhoea and Vomiting fact card that has helpful advice.”

Begin fluid replacement as soon as diarrhoea starts and give small amounts of fluid often as large amounts may not be kept down.

Babies and children should be given a teaspoon of fluid every minute and adults should take a quarter of a cup every 15 minutes. It is best to avoid undiluted sugary drinks as their high sugar content can make diarrhoea worse.

Light foods such as dry biscuits, cooked mashed vegetables (e.g. plain potato) dry white toast, boiled rice and clear soup are suggested if hungry and then slowly get back to eating normal meals.

For a few days avoid raw vegetables and fruit, wholemeal bread, fried or spicy food and milk products such as cheese and yoghurt.

Here are some simple food handling and cooking tips, and general hygiene measures to help prevent getting a ‘gastro’ bug or passing it on to others.

Wash hands in hot soapy water and dry them well after going to the toilet, after changing babies’ nappies, and before touching food and preparing meals; have clean utensils and chopping boards; defrost meats thoroughly in the fridge and not out on the bench; keep raw foods in the fridge separated from cooked and ready-to-eat foods; refrigerate all foods until ready to use; use chilly bins with frozen pads inside to keep food cool, and keep them out of the sun; cook meats, especially chicken and other poultry, until the juices run clear and the flesh is no longer pink; cover hot food while cooling, and leave it to cool no longer than 30 minutes before putting in the refrigerator; reheat leftovers until they are steaming hot and only reheat once.

Wrights Hill Fortress open Wellington’s historic Wrights Hill Fortress in Karori will be open for public inspection on Waitangi Day, 6 February.

The World War Two coastal battery first opened to the public in 1989 and will be accessible between 10am and 4pm.

On Waitangi Day people are invited to self-guide themselves through the tunnels and gun emplacements.

The walk usually takes about one hour and people are advised to bring a torch, strong footwear and no jandals.

Visitors will be able to explore the 620 metres of underground tunnels with a free map and history pamphlet.

They will see shell stores, plotting rooms and the huge gun pit where Gun Number 1 used to stand, as well as a replica of the 10-metre-long gun barrel.

Also on show will be historic photos and an assortment of military weapons. A DVD of how a 9.2-inch gun operates will be showing as well.

The World War Two Fortress is the only one of its type in New Zealand available to the public on four open days a year.

Wrights Hill Fortress was built from 1942 to protect Wellington from Japanese bombardment.

In the early 1960s, the guns were cut up for scrap and sold, ironically, to the Japanese.

Admission is $20 for a family of two adults and three children under 12, or $10 per adult and $5 per child (CASH ONLY and no EFTPOS).

All proceeds go to the continuing restoration of the Fortress.

Access is via Karori Road, Campbell Street, and Wrights Hill Road.

There is limited car parking at the summit of the hill.

Visitors to the Fortress in Wrights Hill Reserve can also enjoy bush walks, picnic sites and panoramic views from the top of the hill.

There will also be a BBQ sausage sizzle and soft drinks on sale. No booking is required.

What’s council doing about water leaks

How is Wellington City Council addressing water leaks and water shortage issues?

The Minister of Local Government Simeon Brown has written to Wellington Mayor Tory Whanau asking this question.

His request follows the Mayor’s failure to respond to a request for information from the Chair of the Wellington Water Committee.

“As Minister of Local Government, I wrote to the Chair of the Wellington Water Committee to ask what actions shareholder councils are taking to reduce the possible water shortage,” Mr Brown says.

“This included asking how councils were actively considering how to fix leakage issues,

increasing supply, and how the short-and medium-term activity will be funded.

“Both [the Wellington and Upper Hutt] mayors failed to respond to the Chair of the Wellington Water Committee’s request for this information by the 17 January 2024 deadline.

“This information was needed for the Chair’s response to me.

“With the exception of Wellington City and Upper Hutt City, the other councils in the Wellington region were able to provide the requested information which summarised their work programmes and steps they had taken.

“I am disappointed that Wellington City and Upper Hutt City failed to provide Wellington Water with the required information.

“Therefore I have now used my powers under the Local Government Act to formally request information that those councils are taking their obligations to residents and ratepayers seriously, and are implementing all mitigations necessary to avoid cuts or limits on water supplies,” Mr Brown says.

The Wellington region, with the exception of Kāpiti Coast, is currently in the midst of water restrictions which may have to escalate as summer continues.

“Water regulator Taumata Arowai is actively preparing to exercise its powers in the event that a water emergency occurs,” Mr Brown notes.

The day after Minister Brown issued a media release on the issue, on 19 January, the Wellington Mayor issued a media release in response.

“Wellington City Council responded as requested within the deadline set by [Lower Hutt] Mayor Campbell Barry on the draft letter to be sent on behalf of all shareholding councils,” Mayor Whanau says.

“Not all of our feedback was incorporated but we fully support the letter and its intent.

“Had we known that two of the four councils were also providing more detailed appendices to that letter, we would have provided our own.

“Unfortunately, this misunderstanding has given rise to the perception we did not respond or that we don’t take this matter seriously. We did and we do,” the Mayor says.

“Regarding the Minister’s letter sent late on Friday night, we respect the concerns shared by the Minister and it is a shame this confusion has arisen.

“Wellington City Council will work quickly to provide all information requested by Minister Brown under the Local Government Act. “I have requested a meeting with the Minister to discuss his concerns and to provide further information,” the Mayor says.

“Wellington City Council is committed to dealing with the water infrastructure problems facing the region.

“We are collectively addressing a long legacy of underinvestment that has reached a tipping point. We are working towards a regional model that is fit for purpose for the future.

“We know that people are sick and tired of this problem that has built up from decades of underinvestment in our underground pipes from both central and local government.

“The water shortages we are currently experiencing are a consequence of this underinvestment.

“While there are no easy fixes, our council is committed to working together with other councils and Wellington Water to get on top of this,” Mayor Whanau says.

“We know we lose a massive amount of water to leaks.

“This is why just before Christmas, the Council approved $2 million in extra funding for Wellington Water to fix as many leaks as possible over the coming months,” she adds.

Water leaks are commonplace in Wellington City, with a number of people posting about leaks on Facebook.

It is okay for the Wellington City Council “to not sort the 46% water that is lost due to leaks in Wellington”? Andy Withington commented on the Facebook post by the Karori Residents’ Association about the water restrictions.

“Water gushing out of the footpath, lower end of Grass Street Oriental Bay, at 1pm today Friday 19/1, and no apparent effort to repair. More than a joke,” Graeme Kirkcaldie commented on the residents’ association post.

Wellington Water says that current estimates show that more than 40% of the total amount of drinking water supplied was lost through leaks.

Leaks were happening on both the public network and on private properties.

Newlands recycling initiative

The Newlands Community Centre has two recycling initiatives running.

The centre is collecting plastic and metal lids on behalf of the Sustainability Trust and is also collecting used batteries as part of Wellington City Council’s battery recycling scheme.

Type 2 and type 5 plastic lids (look under the lid for a number inside of a triangle on the reverse of the lid) are being collected, as well as metal lids like bottlecaps and the tops of tins.

People are asked to make sure they are cleaned and sorted before dropping them in.

The centre takes most household batteries.

This includes lithium ion (rechargeable batteries); nickel cadmium and alkaline batteries: AA, AAA, 9V, C, D, N; Zinc air (for example camera batteries); Silver zinc (for example laptop and hearing aid batteries); other household batteries and mobile phone batteries.

Leaking or damaged batteries are not accepted. These need to be taken directly to the Southern Landfill’s hazardous substances area.

Car or truck batteries are not accepted either, nor are electrical appliances and mobile phones.

Botanic Gardens group shares the love of chocolate!

The Friends of Wellington Botanic Garden have done it again with a delicious range of chocolate produced in collaboration with La Petite Chocolatrie in Tinakori Road.

The chocolate uses herbs gathered from the Garden and the magic of a professional chocolateier to produce Rosemary and Sea Salt, Thyme and Lemon, and Camomile and Orange. These delicious confections join other Friends’ products on the pantry shelf, Down the Garden Path gin and Down the Garden path olive oil.

Naturally, the gardener as well as the cook is catered for by the Friends who sell plants and seedlings, tulip bulbs and, this year for the first time dahlia tubers. Most gardeners love botanical art and renowned artist Sandra Morris, ONZM, is the Friends’ second Artist in Residence at the Garden. Sandra will be working in the Treehouse in February and March, as well as holding classes for beginners in botanical water colours and nature journaling.

And that’s not all. Monthly music concerts

by Wellington artists and choirs in the Begonia House are becoming more and more popular and brown bag lunch lectures will restart in the new year.

All these activities (and many others) are

provided by the Friends as a way of fulfilling their aim of promoting and supporting the Botanic Garden. When the new children’s playground opens it will boast the first Smart bench in Wellington with wireless charging pads for mobile devices and a Wi-Fi hotspot for those nearby, all powered by renewable solar energy and funded by the Friends.

The Friends are an important part of the Wellington Botanic Garden. Membership comes with many benefits, as well as the satisfaction of supporting Wellington’s wonderful Botanic Garden.

The Stonehenge Aotearoa Star Treks programme begins with a short pre­ sentation on our place in the universe.

For most of us the main feature of the Summer Solstice is that it is the day with the longest period of daylight.

This officially occurs at the moment when the sun reaches a point directly overhead of the Tropic of Cancer (latitude 23.44° north) in the northern hemisphere or over the Tropic of Capricorn in the southern.

At this point the respective hemisphere will receive sunlight at the most direct angle for that year. During the December Solstice the sun will appear at its highest and the longest in the sky.

Whilst this delivers the longest day of the year the actual length of this day will vary according to location.

Moving down Cuba Mall last year to Te Auaha was huge but it certainly feels like home now.

The dancers love the lifts, parents love the space to watch through gallery windows, Scholars love being part of a Creative Centre where so much happens and Musical Theatre full time students are so welcoming, talented and energised!

2024 is a new year and this year we welcome new students. Sat morning 10.00 is our Beginner class (5-7 yrs) and Wednesday 6.30 Kathiy Watson continues her Adult Ballet tradition. RAD

Student choreographers Sylvie Smith, Josie Clark and Hannah Warburton made their own works about being in a new space.

History was included with our staging of Pas de Quatre for four beautiful ballerinas. There is

Orla Riches has been with Fiona since she was 4yrs old and has been accepted into the Classical programme at NZSD. Although Orla has studied all types of dance at FHDA (achieving the highest results in all RAD Ballet and NZAMD Jazz exams). Classical has always been her passion and she is looking forward to her future career path.

Lydia Chapman started at 5yrs old with Fiona, has completed all her RAD Ballet and NZAMD Jazz exams with top marks however her passion has always been Contemporary and she is very talented.
