A lack of regulation Continued from page 1 With the influx over the last four years local hobbyist bee keeper Wayne Wild says it is making it tough going for the bees in the valley.

It is no longer the pleasurable hobby to enjoy as the competition builds for the liquid gold and since the influx hives have been stolen and some poisoned and recently the price per kilo has plummeted.

With no limit or regulation on the number of hives to the acre commercial operators are getting a free reign to put as many hives into a given area as they wish.

“You can only put so many sheep per acre and only so many beehives per acre,” Wayne says.

A good move would be to have similar regulations to what they have in Switzerland, he says, there they have regulations for all forms of farming from worms to bees.

Wayne says one of the reasons the hives have been bought into the area is because the Wairarapa is so full and riddled with disease.

“I went up to the old tip along the road and I counted the hives and there are 262 and that’s only half a kilometre from my place and bees go for five kilometres to gather pollen.”

What he also found were some of the hives were in poor condition.

“If you want to keep bees you have to have the bees extract your own honey and a lot of bee keepers are not interested in export they are just bee keepers.”

There are big companies, some of them from China, and they have contacts set up already overseas and it is easy for them to sell the honey and they are driving the price down locally, he says.

“A few years back some jokers were getting $15 a kilo for their honey wholesale and then it went down to $2:30 because

of new regulations made by the government and it was the big commercial companies that made the rules up with the government,” Wayne says.

A thousand hives is not considered a big number for one person to have. Wayne says the commercial operators have thousands and thousands of hives.

Global focus on fruit and vegetables By: Gerald Rillstone How tamariki throughout the Hutt Valley access their 5+ A Day is in the spotlight as the United Nations declares 2021 The International Year of Fruits and Vegetables (IYFV).

This global focus on the availability of fresh, nutritious produce to our most vulnerable communities is an opportunity to address issues of inequality on a local level.

Aotearoa’s Fruit and Vegetables In Schools (FIS) initiative has performed a key role in supporting the health and wellbeing of our tamariki for over sixteen years. In

2021 the initiative will deliver over 27 million servings of fresh fruit and vegetables to schools nationwide. Tamariki in these classrooms are provided with one piece of fresh seasonal produce to eat with their classmates daily, providing essential nutritional goodness as well as the opportunity to try over two dozen varieties of fruit and vegetables during the school year.

The FIS initiative encapsulates the focus of the IYFV, working towards the goals of ending hunger, reducing inequality and improving health, wellbeing and education.

supported by The 5+ A Day Charitable Trust, United Fresh President, Jerry Prendergast, says FIS supports tamariki struggling with food insecurity in our most vulnerable communities.

In the Hutt Valley, 13 low decile schools are currently enrolled in the FIS scheme.

Wainuiomata’s Arakura School is one of the local schools enrolled and Teacher Al Ingham says the students have been getting the fruit for the last four years and he says allowing them to access throughout the day makes a big difference.

“For their brains to keep on ac-

tivating they need that sustenance and we get a good variety from apples to bannas, rock mellon and carrots, and cherry tomatoes go down well,” he says.

The other good thing to come out of it Al says is any leftover fruit at the end of the week is put out for the community to access.

Originally developed in 2004, FIS deliveries are organised at no cost to schools or local communities, and the 5+ A Day Charitable Trust provides free curriculum-linked resources to help promote healthy eating and teach students how to grow their own produce.

Pukeatua Primary School are looking for stall holders who would like to participate in our School Gala.

For a Koha they can have a table to sell their goods from.

The stall holder must supply the table.

They are asking for no stalls selling food as classes from the school will be selling food on the day.

To book a spot please ring the school office.

The gala will be held on Saturday April 10 from 9am to 1:30.

Better mental wellbeing outcomes for Māori Associate Health Minister Peeni Henare, says creating new ways of procuring services for Māori mental wellbeing will make a significant difference to Māori over time.

The Ministry of Health has brought together eleven Teina kaupapa Māori primary mental health and addiction service providers to focus on the development of dedicated Māori mental health outcomes.

Announcements about new services resulting from the Tuakana stream are expected in the coming weeks.

Arakura Neighbours Day Arakura celebrated Neighbours Day with a community bbq and games that were enjoyed by local children, parents and neighbours.

The focus of the day was a very simple ‘get to know your neighbours’.

The well attended event was held on the corner of Norfolk and Wellington Road, activities and a BBQ. Arakura local and organiser, Tania Marino, wanted to host a free event that was easily accessible to neighbours parents and children. “it’s a chance for people to get together, play and enjoy relaxing together,” she says.

The day included bikes, a colouring competition and giveaways

with a focus on whanau engagement and spending time together outdoors. “social connection is so important to overall community wellbeing, I certainly found during Covid-19, the more we can connect, the safer and happier we feel,” Hutt City Councilor Keri Brown says.

Community Patrol hosted the free BBQ, “No matter where you live, knowing your neighbours matters. Getting to know your neighbours better - knowing you can call on them, or they can call on you makes your neighbourhood more friendly, fun and safe,” Paul Knox says.

School community officer constable Tanya Leef has the busy job of training and refreshing students trained for school patrol.

Tanya is in-charge of making sure students at 37 of the Hutt’s schools are trained and kept up to speed on patrolling crossings outside schools.

“Essentially part of my role is to teach and train the road patrols and I do all of Lower Hutt,” she says.

She says students do get supervised but they are running the patrol.

Wainuiomata AFC vs Napier City Rovers This Saturday at 2.30pm at Richard Prouse Park see’s the Men’s first team play their first game in the Central League. This is New Zealand football’s top level league which we were last a part of in 1995.

What’s Cooking... in Easy Thai Green Chicken Curry Ingredients:

s 500 g boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into 2cm pieces s 210 g pouch Wattie’s Wok Creations Thai Green Curry Simmer Sauce s ½ cup coconut milk s 2-3 courgettes, thickly sliced s juice of half a lime s extra coconut milk s fresh coriander or Thai basil leaves (optional)

1. Heat a dash of oil in a lidded frying pan or saucepan.

Add the chicken and stir-fry to colour. Add Wattie’s Wok Creations Thai Green Curry Simmer Sauce and coconut milk. Bring nearly to the boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 10-15 minutes until chicken is almost cooked.

2. Add the sliced courgettes and cook a further 4-5 minutes, until courgettes and chicken are tender.

3. Stir through a little lime juice and extra coconut milk if wished.

4. Garnish with coriander or Thai basil leaves and serve with jasmine rice.

Aotearoa to stand in solidarity with the 4,200 rangatahi impacted by cancer every year this Bandanna Day (Friday 26 March 2021) Youth cancer charity CanTeen Aotearoa supports rangatahi aged 13-24 experiencing cancer either themselves or in their wh nau.

Each year on Bandanna Day, CanTeen calls on Aotearoa to show young people dealing with cancer they aren’t alone by wearing a bandanna. The funds raised through donations and the purchasing of bandannas go directly to helping CanTeen reach more young people in need.

Nick Laing, CanTeen’s CEO, said Bandanna Day is the organisation’s biggest fundraiser.

“CanTeen relies solely on the generosity of the community to provide vital services like counselling, online support, events and

camps. Like many other charity events, last year’s Bandanna Day was heavily impacted by the pandemic, so we’re thrilled to be back bigger and better this year!”

Country at its best in Wainuiomata By: Gerald Rillstone Wainuiomata’s historic Coast Road Church provided the perfect venue for the Wainuiomata Country and Western Club to hold their annual concert.

It’s an evening that provides the oppor-

tunity for all members to get up on stage and have a go and provided a variety of country genre for the audience.

A small venue but a packed one saw a successful evening enjoyed at a venue that gives the whole event a true country atmosphere.

Time to prepare for winter: By Wally Richards

Winter is not far away. There is a chill in the early morning air and the dew is heavy.

I have heard of light to medium frosts in some areas.

So now is the time to winter-prepare our plants.

Firstly, don’t water too much as this can quickly lead to root rots.

And don’t apply strong nitrogen fertilisers as they cause soft growths which can be damaged in the winter weather.

Instead , sprinkle some Wallys Fruit and Flower Power in the rot zone of you plants. It contains potash which will harden up the foliage and magnesium to help keep the leaves green in the cold weather.

Tender plants and plants such as tomatoes growing in the open can be kept going for a bit longer by spraying with Vaporgard, the sprayon frost protection.

Spray on a sunny day, in full sunlight so that the protecting film dries faster.

VaporGard is available to the home gardener and has a multitude of uses including as ‘spray-on-frost cloth’.

It’s very simple. Mix it with 15 mls per litre of warm water. Then spray over the plant’s foliage for good coverage. No need to spray under the foliage.

Put your bottle of VaporGard in a jug of hot water for about 15 minutes so the fluid pours more easily.

VaporGard is organic and provides two to three months of protection down to -3C within three days of application.

New growth requires further applications but as there is very little growth through winter, this is not needed till the spring.

Where there are harder frosts than -3C you will still need the traditional frost cloth (Good quality frost cloth protects down to -5C). Combine the two and you have a heap of protection.

The film lasts for three months so spraying now it is good till June when another spray will be needed to take the plants out of winter.

Use VaporGard on transplanted seedlings and established plants to reduce moisture loss though the foliage, and transplant stress.

And in summer, when your container plants start to suffer through drying out, just spray the foliage under and over and they will require far less watering.

In a glasshouse, or on very hot days, plants like tomatoes and curbits can droop. At that time they have stopped growing. Just spray with the product to overcome this.

VaporGard also develops a polymerised skin over each spray-droplet which filters out UVA and UVB. Within days, you will see darker green foliage from chlorophyll buildup, making the leaf a more efficient food factory.

The film also helps protect against some fungus diseases. On fruit trees it will give your fruit better colour, reduce splitting problems, increase sugar content and earlier maturity.

The picked fruit will also store for longer.

The annual Think Kind Student Competition has officially launched this week, encouraging Kiwi kids to get creative to promote kindness to animals.

The competition, which is run by the NZ Vegetarian Society, promotes animal compassion. It helps young people identify and develop skills that can be used to benefit others.

Every entrant receives a certificate and gift, and there are some amazing prize packs up for grabs. The winner of the People’s Choice award will win $1,000 for their school.

Last year, the competition received entries from across the country, with Gurvir Badwal, from Randwick Park School, winning the $1,000 cash prize.

Charlotte Besant, the spokesperson for NZ Vegetarian Society, says the competition’s aim is to promote values associated

with vegetarianism.

‘The competition reflects core vegetarian values - healthy living, sustainability and reducing animal cruelty. It is important to encourage children to reflect on the importance of kindness to animals, and it’s great to see how many want to get involved and make a positive contribution.’

Entries are open until the end of August, and kids are encouraged to get creative with their projects to showcase their talents.

Sailing away for a new beginning It is time the America’s Cup sailed away from New Zealand in an effort to grow its global audience.

Yes, it was great to retain it, yes the latter half of the racing against Prada was far more interesting and entertaining than many, including myself thought it could be but it deserves a bigger stage than Auckland and New Zealand can offer.

The Auckland’s viaduct had 10,000 people at it as Peter Burling’s team secured the 7-3 vic-

tory and that’s the pinnacle of the warm, fuzzy feeling this country can provide.

Government and officials are keen to keep the next event on our shores but surely the Auld Mug would be best served to take it to a more global stage.

Yes, it’s been sailed in San Francisco and Bermuda but it’s time to reinvigorate a Cup which was once a global icon.

Yes, we are a team of 5 million but that is a drop in the ocean.

The government in this climate surely cannot write a blank cheque to help fund the next campaign during a global pandemic.

It is an unwinnable argument for them.

With the Royal Yacht Squadron out of Britain now being the challenger of record, it would make a lot of sense to race it in the United Kingdom or Europe.

Despite its name, the America’s Cup started in Britain, before the Americans took it and claimed it

as their own in an all too familiar USA power play move on the world stage.

Yes, many narrow-sighted people see this event as rich boys and their toys but it also has the ability to unite.

I was six-years-old when the red socks campaign of 1995 happened and maybe that is where the romance of the event comes from, but it needs more participants and a bigger stage.

Team New Zealand has nothing

left to prove.

They have won it, defended it, lost it, regained it and retained it.

It is now time to grow the event and that may be best done offshore.

The final few races were exhilarating but they will soon be a distant memory.

We will remember a winner and a loser, such is life, but for the event to thrive, set it free and hopefully it can return bigger and better at some point in the future.

First XI fourth in Division Three

Wainui first XI finished the season 4th on the Division 3 table after a one day cricket loss to Johnsonville on Sunday. Being sent into bat, Wainui started well with a 79 run opening stand but could only manage 225, after the middle order failed to fire. Darryl Cole scored 91 as top scorer for Wainui. In reply, Johnsonville started strongly scoring 68 in the first 10 overs and were able to chase the total down comfortably for 5 wicket win. Jason Logan continued his good form with 3 wickets in his 6 over spell.

Wainui 2nd IX played Easts in the first day of their 2 day game. Batting first Easts scored 151 with TJ Ahuja getting 4 wickets and in reply

Wainui were in command with a 63 run lead. Varun Khanna scored 77 in an entertaining innings, which included 15 4’s. The Wainui 40 over team were the highlight result from the weekend with an amazing batting display. Turning up with just 8 players, Captain Jamie Patmore must have had some inspirational words to his players as bating first Wainui blasted Easts all around the park on their way to a total of 372 for the loss of 4 wickets. Brent Baikie scored a club record 213 not out in another club record 288 run partnership for the 3rd wicket with Kevin Krebs who scored 84.

Not surprisingly, Wainui won by 160 runs with Ross Cardno charging through the top order with 3 wickets.

Ulalei and Wainui’s wealth of talent

Ulalei Wainuiomata’s touch rugby season culminated last week with its two teams taking away bronze in their respective pools.

Whilst the final whistle was blown in near darkness, the exceptional talent on show at this competition shone a very bright light, something that has not gone unnoticed by those in the know.

Ulalei and former Manu Samoa sevens legend Uale Mai observed, “The talent at Wainuiomata’s flag football

and touch football competitions is awesome, both boys and girls. The ball skills are the main difference between New Zealand and other countries.”

Whilst club rugby and rugby league’s recent struggle for player numbers across the countr y have been welldocumented, Mai comments, “Lack of talent cannot be the reason why clubs are short on numbers. The players are right here in our back yard and there are plenty.”

Ulalei’s own talent stocks boast Wellington touch rugby representatives Alexis Taua-

neai and Leota sisters Trenell, Tyra and Ryshia and Central Region and Hutt Valley rugby league representatives in Faleono Leala and Mea’ole Ma’i respectively. There are clearly pathways to higher honours and Wainuiomata’s young products are being recognised, at least at school-age level.

As Ulalei’s focus now shifts to its netball teams, it acknowledges the fantastic support received this summer from local businesses Charlie’s Sushi, Wainui Joinery, Wainuiomata Taxis, Viti Barbers and Wel- Tyra and Trenell Leota playing for Ulalei League in the rugby final last year. lington Pipelines.
