Colourful old cars

Doug Curtis has been a petrolhead for all of his life.

The experiences in his life, in some way or another, have included a car or Doug’s ability to be a bit of a handyman.

Among his collection of four cars, one of them is a green 1936 Chevrolet pickup truck to which Doug has spent

countless hours working on and repairing, including fixing up the back so he can sleep in it while he’s away.

But probably what Doug may be most known for are his detailed and colourful drawings of vintage cars and articles he publishes in the AutoWatch paper every week.

Over the last 11 years, Doug has drawn close to 300 pictures.

“I’ve been drawing for so long,” Doug says.

Growing up as the youngest of nine siblings and moving to Wainuiomata in 1964, the 88-year-old loves the way drawing can keep him occupied during the day.

“I’ve had a very exciting life,” he says.

Doug started as an automotive apprentice in Gisborne in 1948 but had goals of being a sign writer.

Over the years, Doug has been a polytech tutor teaching automotive engineering, was a member of the New Zealand Army and worked as a government vehicle inspector for Gisborne.

“I travelled up and down the east coast as an inspector. It was a very interesting job actually,” Doug says.

It is prized 1936 Chevrolet pickup truck has been taken all the way up to North Cape, Gisborne, the east coast and to Gore, he says.

“I’ve done 50,000 miles on it since I’ve had it.”

“He used to make me drive home!” Doug laughs.

Doug has even written a couple of books for good measure too.

One is a biography of his life called Turning Wheels published in 2008 and a picture book showing off his detailed vintage

car drawings.

“I basically started drawing the book overnight because I already had all the drawings,” Doug says.

“When I’m drawing I’m not thinking about everything else.

It can take him all day to draw a detailed picture, he says.

“Sometimes I leave a sketch

and give it to the grandkids to colour in,” Doug says.

If drawing and fixing cars isn’t enough, he is also a talented brass musician, still playing the euphonium regularly, he says.

“I’ve done all sorts of things-sometimes people don’t believe me,” Doug laughs.

Local rangatahi create music album

Four talented young locals have been following their passion for music and singing and have created an album featuring all of their own original songs.

Over the last year Awhi Guardians, Amahre Edwardson, Angelique Te-Rauna and P1ko have been working with the Tihei Rangatahi Mana Ake programme and Thomas Te Taite to turn their passion into a reality.

The album, which was released last Friday evening, has 10 original tracks and all feature their own songwriting, singing and instrumental skills, guided by Thomas.

The group says they have all been singing since they were young and are hoping to pursue a career in the music industry so the experience of making an album was very exciting and nerve-wracking.

Thomas, who has worked as a music producer for many years, guided the youngsters through the process by helping them tweak their songs and create the arrangements that can be heard on the finished product.

“It’s just youth getting on and doing what they to do.

“We’re trying to show music can be more than a hobby,” Thomas says.

Fifteen-year-old Amahre’s favourite part and most rewarding part of the whole process was the songwriting experience, she says.

“For me, it’s about the emotions in my songs and how much I needed it.

“I would have a concept for a song, any spare time I had I

would write, then I took what I had to Tommy,” Amahre says.

While Amahre has an upbeat pop sound, P1ko’s music has an optimistic and reggae sound, Angelique has beautiful Te Reo melodies and Awhi follows a soulful R&B vibe.

“We’re all very different people. The songs are very us as individuals,” Angelique says.

“The coolest part is still being able to be our own person while sharing our music together,” Amahre adds.

P1ko’s favourite part of the album process was getting the opportunity to record with the variety of instruments.

When asked about how they all feel about having their songs produced onto an album

they are all speechless and cannot quite believe it.

“It hasn’t really sunken in yet,” Angelique says.

Titled Mana Ake volume 1 is available on all media sites.

Pukeatua takes off Pukeatua Primary School students finally had the opportunity to watch their rockets soar last Tuesday during a launching on the school field.

It was a pretty big deal because the whole school came out to watch as the teams of engineers set up their rockets for the final time, each team hoping to be the winner of the Rocket Challenge Trophy 2019.

Pukeatua School was one of 200 schools across New Zealand who have committed to sparking wonder in their students about Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).

The Rocket Challenge has taken place over the last six weeks and it’s been planned and created by teachers and STEM professionals to align with level 4 of the New Zealand school curriculum.

Student Caleb Hema-Taana says: “He enjoyed learning how the different size fins made the rocket behave in different ways.”

The year 5 to 8 classes were supplied with a rocket kit as well as many downloadable resources to aid them. Their teacher, Mark Williams, guided students through the programme.

“Students designed their rockets and tested them, having to discuss and decide what changes to be made to enable their rockets to fly further or higher than the other teams,” Mark says.

Student Yeshaya Rangitaawa liked building the rockets while learning about how to find the centre of gravity and the centre of pressure.

“It was fun swinging the rockets around on string to see if we had it right,” she says.

Student Christian-Kahn says “the most exciting part was seeing our rocket get launched and watch it fly.”

Students explore future at careers expo

“Students get to practice some of their skills like introducing themselves, giving a firm handshake, answering basic questions which are often used in an interview, marketing their skills and asking questions of the organisation.

“Each of these skills is critical when it comes to job-seeking,” Lisa says.

The careers expo is held every two years for high school leavers and introduces employers to a new generation entering the workforce.

Boys to play baseball in Japan I nt e r m e d i a t e School students, Flynn Keall and Brodie Sue, head to Japan next week to play for N ew Ze aland in the baseball U12s team.

There must be something in the water in Wainuiomata because Flynn Keall and Brodie Sue, two students at the intermediate school, are heading off to Japan next week to play for the New Zealand Under 12 Broncos Baseball team in the Pony League.

The boys will be heading off with their teams, and their dads Lance Keall and Gary Sue, for 10 days and are very excited, they say.

Playing in the Asia Pasific tournament, their games will be against Korea, Indonesia, China and the Philippines.

While these two boys have only been playing baseball for the

last three years, they have been playing softball for a long time.

“It’s very cool and exciting,” Brodie says.

Brodie’s position is the third base but his favourite part of playing baseball is fielding because it makes him think, he says.

Flynn is a catcher in the outfield.

“I’m excited because I get to go and play one of my favourite sports and play other countries,” Flynn says.

Just because the boys are young, it doesn’t excuse them from some big training hours.

Flynn and Brodie train three days a week and are expected to additional training during the week, their dads say.

“It’s huge for these kids. It’s the experience of a lifetime,” Flynn’s dad, Lance, says.

Baseball is relatively new in Wellington and there has been “a bit of push for kids to have a go,” Brodie’s dad Gary says.

The winners of the tournament will go on to the finals that will be held in America in August.

Both boys would like to say thank you for the support and for helping them to fundraise.

If anyone is interested in playing a new sport like baseball, there is a much stronger pathway for scholarships and careers.

Jenga in the streets

Who would have thought a serious game of Jenga could be taken to the streets?

Last Friday night residents had the opportunity to indulge in a cheeky game of Jenga while they waited for their takeaways for the Jenga & Kai event run by Love Wainuiomata.

Thankfully hunger pains didn’t throw players off their games as they used their keen eyes, a steady hand a gentle touch as they took turns to remove the blocks from a tower constructed of 54 blocks.

Jenga was created by Leslie Scott, the co-founder of Oxford Games Ltd, and based on a game that evolved within her family in the early 1970s using children’s wooden building blocks the family purchased from a sawmill in Takoradi, Ghana.

Did you know the name ‘Jenga’ is derived from kujenga, a Swahili word which means “to build”?

Amanda loves libraries Amanda Dickson is one of six kaitiaki at the Community Hub Library who keep the air buzzing and runs activities for tamariki and rangatahi in the community.

Amanda Dickson is one of six kaitiaki at the Community Hub Library and a bit of a ‘jack of all trades’.

Like all those working at the Hub, Amanda creates and runs programmes for local youngsters and everything in between.

She has been working at the Wainuiomata Library now for a year and half but found her way into the world of community libraries through a different path.

Amanda always had a passion for cartoon animation and studied under the prestigious John Ewing in Auckland over 10 years ago.

“I’ve always wanted to be a

storyteller.

“Storytelling is a great way to connect with kids,” Amanda says.

Eventually, some years later, Amanda found herself in Wellington and worked for the animation studio Flux Animation as the head of the ink and paint departments.

“I got to work on a lot of cool things like a Scooby Doo game.”

But as the digital age boomed, cartoon hand-drawn animation work “dried out”, Amanda says.

“It was at that point I thought I wanted to become a librarian.

“I came along when libraries were transforming into hubs and turned into action and creative space.

“It’s not that ‘shhhh’ space

anymore so I’ve come in at a good time. Things are changing,” Amanda says.

Because of Amanda’s love of cartoon and creation, some of her programmes are hugely creativity-based.

One of which is the after-school programme Zines for Teens where youngsters have the opportunity to make a mini magazine with all of their own ideas, from start to finish.

Amanda also runs an afterschool badminton programme, a walking group and lots of “cool games and science”.

“A reason I love coming here is the people I work with.

Everyone here is really passionate about supporting the community and helping people.” Amanda says.

Megan Connolly, Wainuiomata’s intrepid reporter is, as you know, a great writer.

She is also the creative type.

You’ll realise that when you see her dancing and singing in Mamma Mia, the Wainui Little Theatre’s production to be held between October 2-19.

But that commitment to months of rehearsals meant she had to take a good hard look at her elderly Mitsubishi. She started wondering about how it would stand up to the constant late-night trips up and down the hill from her Johnsonville home.

It probably won’t. So she wondered if there was Another Way. (That is apart from mortgaging the rest of her life to pay for another car.)

A short trip to the carpark outside her office at Wellington Suburban Newspapers suddenly, however, revealed the solution.

There, parked right by the steps at the Johnsonville Railway Station, was The Answer.

Despite frantic pleading from her colleague, who caught her in the act, she hopped aboard one of the brand-new Flamingo e-scooters parked there.

“This will be perfect! It will just eat that hill.

“And with global warming, I won’t need to worry about hypothermia.

“Mamma Mia, here I come again.”

Blazing skies to light up Wainuiomata for Matariki It’s that time of the yea r when winter brings a twinkle in the eastern skies to herald the arrival of Matariki, the Pleiades star cluster.

This is the signal to celebrate, to give thanks for the harvest and to remember loved ones.

Matariki Whanau Festival, now in its second year, combines music and creativity across nine themes based on the nine stars of Matariki.

A highlight of the n ight wil l be t he burning of a hundred remembrance lanterns in braziers during a memorable ceremony prior to the fireworks display.

Event organiser Te Rangi Huata says: “This will be a very powerful and emotional ceremony for those who come.

“The public is welcome to write messages of love on these lanterns and place them inside a symbolic waka leading up to the fire ceremony.

“We want to continue this tradition in future years. It’s an outpouring of love to be experienced.”

The Wainuiomata Rugby League Club is hosting the event on their club grounds and is providing a massive hangi for the hundreds of visitors expected for the celebrations.

Ngati Kahungunu Iwi Inc is the major funder for the event with support from Atiawa and the Wainuiomata Maori community.

Although the iwi is based in Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay, over 7000 of their members now reside in the Hutt and Greater Wellington region.

“We wanted to bring Matariki to our people in the Wellington region and we were delighted with the huge support we received at last year’s event from our iwi members and the Wainuiomata community,” said Te Rangi.

The evening closes with spectacular fireworks to Maori music at 7pm.

Arakura School student, Henessy-Jade Fuimaono Hughes wears a garment Tangaroa and based on their topic of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

The big wide world of wearable arts took over the Wainuiomata Marae last Thursday with students from kindergartens all the way through to highschoolers strutting their stuff in handmade, largely recycled outfits.

An estimated 500 people attended over the two shows, making the event an unforgettable one for all of the youngsters who attended.

Intermediate students see stars

Year 7 and 8 students in room 5 at Wainuiomata Intermediate School were exploring everything Matariki last Friday.

Crayon in hand, the students had the freedom to draw and colour what they thought sky, fire, earth and wind or water meant to them.

Student Madi Grenfell says we should celebrate Matariki for many different reasons. “We celebrate our new year and the Chinese new year, why not Matariki?�

Matariki is the Maori name for a group of seven stars known as the Pleiades star cluster.

All week long youngsters have been working on a series of activities from poetry to drawing, that teaches them about every aspect of Matariki, room 5 teacher Colin Thompson, says.

Folau’s latest public folly Israel Folau launching a GoFundMe account for the public to donate money in order to help him fight his legal battles is one of the most self-absorbed things I’ve seen from a professional athlete.

Folau, who had his Rugby Australia contract terminated earlier this year after he sent divisive tweets that included those of a homophobic nature, is aiming to raise $A3.5milliom from the page.

This coming from a man, who has already earned millions of dollars from his time in rugby league, Aussie Rules and now rugby.

The sad reality is that many who share his views or religious sentiment will donate.

Such pages are often created to give Joe and Jill Average a chance to raise funds to fight an illness or for life opportunities that require funding like overseas sports trips.

By creating his own page, Folau has confirmed what many people already believed, that his deluded attitude and inability to self analyse his own behaviour has no limits.

Folau need only look in the mirror to discover the man who got him into this mess and also the man who can get him out.

It will be interesting to see if Folau plays professional sport again.

Certainly the talent is there but

any club, franchise or organisation who takes him on after these comments risks a serious backlash from the general public and any contract offered to him could be seen as an endorsement of his comments.

The Folau case is also a good reminder for everyone to be wary of what they post on social media.

Local netballer heads to England

Local resident and mother of five boys, Geraldine “Gene” Solia-Gibb will be heading off to Liverpool, England, on July 8 to play for the Samoan World Cup Netball team.

Netball has taken her many places before, but this will be the first time she will be playing both in Liverpool and captaining the team.

“Now that it’s getting closer I’m nervous but as the captain, I have to stay strong and make sure I am prepared mentally,” Gene says.

“I’m more nervous to play against teams who are passionate about their country.

You can feel their hunger and determination on the court.”

This is the first time Gene has

captained a team and with her experience in high-pressure games, it’s no surprise.

“I think they chose me because I didn’t need that title to be a leader. My leadership off the court reflects on the court.

“It’s your attitude in a team environment and it showed the team there’s no excuse because I have five boys,” Gene laughs.

To prepare for the World Cup Gene has been training incredibly hard five days a week while working and looking after her five children, one of which is a one-year-old.

Mainly Gene trains around 10 hours a week which includes one cardio, an interval session, strengthening, and not to mention games.

The Samoan netball team meets up once a month in

eye or not, at a later date where comments may not necessarily age well.

Folau would be best served to leave his divisive comments at home and try to make a positive impact on the world using his beliefs.

It’s easier to divide than unify and Folau is taking the easier road.

I won’t be donating to his cause though he has my thoughts and prayers in spades.

“I have been all over the world because of netball,” Gene says.

She has been playing netball at a high level for over 10 years.

In 2006 she qualified to play for the Samoan Commonwealth Games team, playing in Melbourne.

However, a lot has changed in the way she plays since having children, Gene says.

“After kids, you appreciate things a bit more and I rely more heavily on recovery than I did in my 20s.”

Gene’s advice for mothers or aspiring netball players is simple.

“Just follow your heart and it will follow you to your goals.

Follow your heart and your mind and body will follow.”

A positive start to round two for Ulalei

Premier 1 Ulalei Aute v St Orans Club win 58-48 The first games of the second round started with Aute redeeming themselves against St Orans Club, after their one-point loss in the first round.

The first quarter was even with Aute leading by a single goal, score:16-15.

In the second quarter, Aute introduced Tokelau International, Rachel Savelio to assist Valerie Taito in the defence circle.

Together with wing defence Maryanne Tomokino-Geale, Aute disrupted the opposition attack to obtain possession to extend the lead to six goals halfway through the second quarter.

However, some unforced errors from Aute late in the quarter allowed St Orans to close the gap to one goal at half time, score: 28-27.

Further changes in the third quarter included Valerie Taito moving to goal attack and bringing Alofa Aberdein-Tapua’i back into defence.

defence combo of Aberdein-Tapua’i, Savelio and Tomokino-Geale gained crucial possession to enable Aute to pull away from their opposition to lead the end of the third quarter 43-37.

Aute continued to apply the pressure in the final quarter to win comfortably 58-48.

Ulalei Pua v UHMU 2 – win 96-25 Pua had a strong first outing to the second round annihilating Upper Hutt Maidstone United (2) 96-27.

An all-around performance by Pua put them in a comfortable 47-9 lead at half time.

It was Samoan International Geraldine Solia-Gibb’s final hitout before heading to Liverpool,

England.

Solia-Gibb (Samoa), Savelio (Tokelau) and Te Araroa Sopoaga (Cook Islands) will be representing their mother countries in their sports, netball for Solia-Gibb and Savelio, and women’s basketball for Sopoaga at the Games in Samoa in July 2019.
