Continued from page 1 As the dawn lifted a minutes silence was observed by the crowd of around 100 who like tens of thousands of others around the country gathered in the early hours to honour the fallen and those who have given their lives to the services.

Later in the morning the parade assembled at the BP petrol station Wainuomata Road for the march to the cenotaph led by a piper with

the local volunteer Fire Service, Police, RSA members, along with local Girl Guides and Scouts and the Maori Wardens.

It was a day to remember the thousands who lost their lives during the Gallipoli campaign: 87,000 Ottoman Turks, 44,000 men from France and the British Empire, including 8500 Australians.

To this day, Australia also marks the events of 25 April.

Among the dead were 2779

New Zealanders, about one in six of those who served on Gallipoli.

It may have ended in military defeat, but for many New Zealanders then and since, the Gallipoli landings signalled that New Zealand was becoming a distinct nation, even as it fought on the other side of the world in the name of the British Empire.

Anzac Day was first observed in 1916. The day has gone through many changes since.

The ceremonies that are held at war memorials up and down New Zealand, and in places overseas where New Zealanders gather, are modelled on a military funeral and remain rich in tradition and ritual.

One local commented that it is a day that is getting remembered more than it was 20 years ago with younger generations making the effort to attend what is truly a ceremony for all New Zealanders.

inbrief news Bank satisfaction Consumer NZ’s latest bank satisfaction survey shows almost three quarters (73%) of New Zealanders think banks are charging too much and only half (52%) think they can be trusted, with almost all big banks surveyed scoring either below or close to average for customer satisfaction.

A whopping 72% of respondents agreed banks need to be monitored more closely to protect consumers from irresponsible practices.

New UAE ambassador Rashid Matar Al Siri Al Qemzi is keen to see as many events as possible undertaken over the remainder of the year to forge stronger interfaith dialogue, something he says is an important topic in today’s world.

He recently took part in a networking event organised by The Wellington Abrahamic on interfaith dialogue and says April, is indeed a special month for all our Abrahamic faiths.

“For our Jewish members, I would like to wish Happy Passover to you, for our Christian members, I would like to wish you Happy Easter and for our Muslim members, I wish you Happy Ramadan.”

He says the UAE proposes a devoted space for inter-faith dialogue through the initiative of the Abrahamic Family House.

“Our leaders believe that interfaith dialogue and understanding of differences is important because, they lead to global and regional stability, they lead to collaborative

opportunities of all kinds, and they lead to more economic prosperities,” Rashid Matar Al Siri Al Qemzi says.

He says in the cultural heart of the UAE capital, Abu Dhabi, the Abrahamic Family House is planned to stand proudly, witnessing to a culture of diversity, tolerance and peace that the United Arab Emirates is blessed with, as a beacon of multiculturalism, coexistence and acceptance of others.

The design of the Abrahamic Family House captures the values shared between Judaism, Christianity and Islam, through four main buildings including a mosque, a church, a synagogue, and Visitor centre in one place.

“Our vision is to form a common community and a symbol of coexistence. The Abrahamic Family House represents a place for learning, dialogue and worship - open to all, a true reflection of the UAE’s belief in tolerance and hospitality by welcoming all believers of all Abrahamic religions and all of humankind.”

From paediatric to aged care nursing and loving it Enliven nurse Gracel Legospi is enjoying her decision to make the move from paediatrics to aged care.

The bubbly nurse arrived in Auckland from the Philippines in 2020 with a bachelor's degree in science and medicine and an extensive background in paediatric nursing in a Qatar hospital, dedicated to the long-term care of children living with disabilities.

After completing her Competency Assessment Training, Gracel jumped at the chance to transfer her nursing skills to eldercare at Enliven’s Levin War Veterans Home – the organisation behind Woburn Home and Apartments in Lower Hutt.

“I could see the similarities between elders and the children in both their cognitive and physical needs. I was drawn to eldercare and Enliven’s philosophy and holistic approach,” says Gracel.

Gracel loves the environment and atmosphere at the Enliven Home.

“I see the elder’s independence is always respected. They are allowed and encouraged to make Levin Home their home with their pets and their individual room décor.”

With her eye on the role of clinical coordinator Gracel says she feels very supported by Enliven.

“The learning environment is great here.

You need never be afraid to ask a question.

It’s very welcoming.”

Enliven is always on the lookout for great people to join the team and right now Woburn Home has mid-senior nursing roles available.

Enliven also offers a NZ Nursing Council approved competency assessment programme

Kuia camaraderie at Pataka

Bringing together skills and sharing friendships over the sewing table sees a group of kuia supporting the Wainuiomata Pataka.

Getting together to support the community with their skill making blankets, jerseys and headbands, recycling material that comes into the Pataka is what keeps this group of women together.

Since COVID the ladies have been working as volunteers from home but get together occasionally to share what they have been up to.

“A lot of people don’t realise they can do work and volunteer from home but we are doing out work during Omicron, Doris is doing some sewing, Barbara is sewing and nannie Mate is doing a bit of everything,” Deb McIvor says.

“There is all a common thread that we are here because it is a way of giving back to the community and we really believe in the cause and we all bring something different to the table.”

They have also been busy making woollen hats for the younger kids at Pukeatua School, Arakura School and Wainuiomata Primary.

“We have been knitting beanies to cover Wainui.”

Deb says they run totally on donations and often turn clothing and curtains into something more useful.

Doris does a lot of knitting “to keep her out of mischief” and they are looking for a volunteer to do ironing.

They all check up on each other and it has been important in recent times to keep connections going so people don’t feel isolated, Deb says.

Late bloom of toxic algae Despite the conclusion of Greater Wellington’s toxic algae monitoring programme, a mainstay for Greater Wellington over the summer months, officers have spotted moderate levels of toxic algae in Te Awa Kairangi/ Hutt River in a stretch from Manor Park to Silverstream.

Our environmental monitoring team has wrapped up the monitoring season for toxic algae and fortunately, spotted the algae while monitoring for other purposes said Penny Fairbrother, Greater Wellington Senior Advisor for the Environment.

The late bloom is a likely attributable to the run of warmer weather, which despite the change in season, has continued.

While rain and cooler weather is obviously more common through autumn and winter and this helps flush out and prevent further

algae, it’s important to remember the dangers, said Penny Fairbrother.

“For those still enjoying the water or taking their pets to the river, it’s important to remember the risks, especially for dogs who love the smell and taste of toxic algae, with an amount as small as a 50c piece, enough to kill one”.

“It highlights the value in knowing what to look out for and what to do if you or your pet come into contact with it. Especially, now that monitoring has finished and the LAWA website is no longer being updated with changes in alert levels or confirmed sightings, added Penny Fairbrother.

Members of the public who think they or their dogs have been in contact with toxic algae should see your doctor or ring Healthline on 0800 611 116 and for their dogs, take it immediately to the nearest vet.

DHBs congratulate local providers’ Hutt Valley and Capital & Coast DHBs welcome the news that Ngati Toa Rangatira and TuOra Compass Health PHO have been announced as key partners in the new locality approach for how healthcare will be delivered in Porirua.

“Our 2DHBs have had the privilege of working alongside both Ngati Toa Rangatira and TuOra Compass Health PHO, and have seen the positive impact that they have brought to the communities they serve,” said 2DHB Chief Executive Fionnagh Dougan.

Ngati Toa Rangatira, TuOra Compass Health, and the 2DHBs are longstanding partners who have worked together for many years to support and improve the health of communities across the region.

s 1-1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 2-inch strips s 2 teaspoons canola oil s 2/3 cup finely chopped onion s 2 medium carrots, chopped s 2 celery ribs, chopped s 1 cup frozen corn s 2 cans (10-3/4 ounces each) condensed cream of potato soup, undiluted s 1-1/2 cups chicken broth s 1 teaspoon dill weed s 1/2 cup half-and-half cream

1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown chicken in oil. Transfer to a 5-qt. slow cooker; add the onion, carrots, celery and corn.

2. In a large bowl, whisk the soup, broth and dill until blended; stir into slow cooker. Cover and cook on low until chicken and vegetables are tender, about 4 hours.

3. Stir in peas and cream. Cover and cook until heated through, about 30 minutes longer.

The Living Room, it is an Aussie programme and it is really well done. z If you had to flee the country, where would you choose to live?

Canada in the mountains where there is stunning scenery and I would ride horses there.

z What would you be leaving behind in Wainuomata?

I would leave behind a horrendous housing situation which has upset many of the long-term residents in Wainui with a green landscape turning to concrete.

z Who would you leave behind?

The Raving Beauties and the friendly people I meet at the HUB. I would also leave behind my neighbour who is living in her fathers garage because she couldn’t afford to pay the rent when it went up two years ago and she is on her own with a daughter and her children.

Bryophytes and Embryophytes are the botanical names given to mosses, lichen, liverworts, hornworts, molds, algae and slime.

These are primate plant-like forms ZKLFK ZHUH WKH ¿ UVW ODQG W\SH SODQWV on the planet, millions of years ago.

It was as a result of these primitive plant forms that began the process of building soils from rocks splitting and powdered by the action of water and ice.

Many bryophytes are very attractive with feather or fern like structures where others look more like something from a alien landscape.

When bryophytes grow in places we do not want them to grow they become a nuisance just like weeds.

Lichen and liverworts appear to be able to grow on most surfaces including glass, public footpaths, fences and roof tiles which are favorite spots for them.

Algae and mosses growing on paths make for a slippery condition when wet and dangerous to us and can occur serious injury if we slip and fall.

Lichens that colonise on the trunks and branches of plants and trees look unsightly and can lead to rots and losses.

Mosses growing in lawns are another problem, not only making the ODZQ XQVLJKWO\ EXW DOVR VX൵ RFDWLQJ our preferred grasses.

More often than not, wherever bryophytes appear, it means a war to eradicate and control.

When action is not taken they SUROL¿ FDWH VSUHDGLQJ RXW WR FDXVH more harm.

Bryophytes cannot be controlled HDVLO\ E\ VFUDSSLQJ R൵ DV UHVLGXHV will be left that allow them to re-establish.

In lawns many gardeners use VXOSKDWH RI LURQ WR EXUQ R൵ PRVVHV

ZKLFK LV RQO\ D YHU\ WHPSRUDU\ ¿ [ as the acidity of the iron only burns R൵ WKH WRS RI WKH PRVV DOORZLQJ LW to re-establish again fairly quickly.

There are various products advertised to clean up bryophytes such as ones that are sprayed on, then left for weathering to remove. Many of these DUH IDLUO\ H[SHQVLYH DQG EU\RSK\WHV are like ants, you can never eradicate them as they will always come back .

Some years back a chemical called benzalkonium chloride, which was used in the medical industry for sterilizing instruments, was discovered to be a boon in the control of bryophytes without harming other plants.

Benzalkonium chloride is an interesting chemical been an aqueous solution and used as a detergent, fungicide, bactericide, and spermicide.

7KH ¿ UVW SURGXFW WR XVH EHQ]DONRQL um for the control of mosses etc was branded, Surrender and the writer picked up on this many years ago and introduced its use to gardeners in Palmerston North though the garden centre I was operating at that time.

It became very popular but was then only available in the commercial pack of one litre.

The product is formulated at 500g / litre benzalkonium chloride in the form of a soluble concentrate and used at the rates of 25 to 50 mls per litres of water.

Many mosses and liverworts need the 50 mls per litre dosage to have H൵ HFWLYH FRQWURO ZKHUH VRPH RWKHU bryophytes such as lichen and algae can be controlled successfully at 25 mls per litre.

A product is available from some garden centres or by mail order using the same formulation and called Wallys Moss and Liverwort Control.

Available in both 500 ml and one litre containers making it more affordable in comparison to the previous brands.

When using on moss and liverwort it is very important that you adjust the sprayer’s nozzle so it is a bit of a jet not a spray mist as the product has to be driven into the target plant.

In recent times I have had the thought that as the chemical is used as a fungicide in some commercial SUHSDUDWLRQV WKHQ WKHUH LV DQ R൵ ODEHO use for in for gardeners in helping to control some fungal diseases.

One that comes to mind is the devastating rust that decimated many gardeners garlic crops over the last two seasons.

A spray over the foliage at the very ¿ UVW VLJQ RI UXVW DW VD\ POV SHU litre to start with and then upping to 50mils if the lessor rate does not appear to be doing the job adequately.

In regards to Garlic Rust last season I used Wallys Cell Strengthening products with great success.

The soil drench was applied after the bulbs sprouted and again two weeks later.

When the foliage was showing I did a weekly spray of the Cell silicon Strengthening spray that had the Super Spreader added. I also added some MBL (Magic Botanical Liquid) and molasses to the spray for good measure.

My advise is keep the vegetable gardens going and stock up on non perishable food items while you can as they are disappearing from the shelves and replacements are much PRUH H[SHQVLYH Happy Gardening and if you email me there are a few bits of other things.

It is with great sadness that I must say farewell to Wainuiomata. I am heading to work in the city but will take with me a memory of a community that I found to be grass roots kiwi and full of more than its fair share of characters.

It will always standout to me the love the community has for itself and

the fact that there is always someone or some local organisation who will put their hand up to help when needed no matter the challenge, truly unique in the day.

I am proud to have been able to tell local news using medium that is even more important today than it ever has been.

Where the person writing and printing the story is part of the com-

munity not just a keyboard warrior or looking for click bait.

I have been amazed at how positive the community is in the face of so many challenges and the fearsome strength of its sporting clubs that show the rest of the region how it is done.

I have met so many locals who have spent their entire lives in the valley and after experiencing it myself I

understand what a gem of a place it is and why they have never moved away.

I would like to thank the amazing locals, politicians and community leaders who have helped me understand the workings of the community and I hope to keep up a connection with Wainuiomata into the future.

Eyes on the community #Z (FSBME 3JMMTUPOF

It’s around 9pm on a Saturday night and the Wainuiomata Community Patrol is about to head out as they have for over a decade to patrol the streets and play the role of eyes on the community for the local police.

It is run totally by volunteers and with the support from the Hutt City Council and local businesses like Clive the Chemist.

Overseer for the patrols Tracy Mansfield says they generally like to go out in pairs but there is a struggle to find the numbers at

the moment.

Ideally they could do with half a dozen new members and all they need is common sense and be able to drive.

“Each team has their own little route that they do and then they cover areas at random and keep it up for at least three hours,” Tracy says.

They also cover a little bit of Petone when other patrols in the Hutt are a bit stretched.

Richard Nixon has been out patrolling for the past year having lived in Wainuiomata for 42 years.

David Tua deserves every accolade he gets ‘The Tua Man’ was named as a Boxing Hall of Fame inductee for 2022.

On Sunday (NZ time), the proud Samoan and pride of South Auckland was inducted as part of the 2022 class, alongside the likes of Sugar Ray Leonard and Laila Ali - daughter of the legendary Muhammad Ali - at a Los Angeles ceremony.

Tua was the pride of combat sports in New Zealand, long before MMA was mainstream, Tua was a box

office, must-see attraction with his stunning power that could end a fight with one left hook.

But what made him most appealing was his relatable, everyday man persona.

The fact he thought awesome started with an o on a game of Wheel of Fortune only enhanced his like-ability as he turned professional.

His powerful punches and softly spoken demeanour made him interesting and watchable even to

someone who knew nothing about boxing.

He was a knockout artist, he worked by the minute, not by the round.

Sure, he was outboxed by the more polished, taller Lennox Lewis in his lone world title fight, which is one of Tua’s few regrets.

Tua waited to land his left hook and simply got out-jabbed on that night in 2000.

Tua’s career highlights happened

outside of the ring.

He is on record as saying his professional debut - when he was able to place a down payment on his parent’s house with his fight purse - and a bout two years later, which allowed him to pay off the home in full remains a highlight.

As a child, I found him captivating and as a young adult watching ‘The Fight of the Century’ against Shane Cameron, I was glad he got a win which allowed him to end his

career on his terms.

New Zealand was ready for that fight in 2009 and Tua delivered.

I watched it in a sports bar in Christchurch and it was truly amazing.

Cameron, who is a bloody nice guy in my dealings with him, didn’t stand a chance once he felt the power of Tua that night.

That’s the quality of the man himself.

Ulalei pre-season netball tournament The annual Atiawa Toa FM Pre Season Netball Tournament took place on Saturday 23 April 2022 at Taita Courts.

Ulalei Netball Club was thrilled to enter three teams in the popular tournament alongside teams from the Wellington, Kapi-Mana, and Wairarapa netball centres. “As well as being a great opportunity for teams to test their combinations for the upcoming season, it was fantastic to see so many teams from clubs outside of the Hutt Valley

taking part,” says Ulalei Komiti member, Karina Sagaga.

Ulalei Aute enjoyed their first hit-out as a new squad. “We took a while to settle on the Walter Nash courts and apply the skills we have practiced over the last two months. We worked on our trust and self-belief throughout the day finishing with two strong performances”, says Aute coach Ponifasio Smith. “We used the tournament to provide court time to all players and build connections regardless of

scores. This was achieved and we are excited for the season ahead.”

Ulalei Fuesina (‘Young Guns”) also took advantage of the tournament to try out positions and different combinations. Coaches Carolyn Perry and Eleanor McLeod were more than pleased with their young team’s performance with all players having stand-out performances throughout the day. Fuesina played four games to advance to the minor finals, narrowly losing 1412 against Porirua Panthers. “We

are looking forward to further developing the skill set and game knowledge of our youthful players this season,” says McLeod.

Social teams Moso’oi and Laga’ali combined to enjoy the autumn sun and play a bit of netball. “Netball Hutt Valley put on a great tournament which attracts teams from around the lower motu. We were happy to be part of it and support our Centre. A massive fa’afetai to all the volunteers, umpires, coaches, management, and execu-

tive members that made it all happen,” says Lagi Moananu, Komiti member.

Three wins from three starts

With three wins from three starts, Cambridge’s Jared Hannon proved himself unbeatable in the chase for junior honours in this year’s New Zealand’s Cross-country Championships.

With points from only three of the series’ four rounds to be counted towards the national title, Kawasaki ace Hannon now has nothing to fear at the fourth and final round in Central Hawke’s Bay next month.

The national title already belongs to Hannon after he completed an impressive 1-1-1 score-card with wins at rounds two and three in the Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay over the

long Easter Weekend.

The 16-year-old set himself up nicely for the junior title win when he won the opening round of the series near Marton in late February, crossing the finish line just ahead of fellow Kawasaki star Tyler Brown, from Pukekawa.

As Brown turned 17 soon after, and was therefore no longer eligible to continue in the junior competition, he was unable to challenge Hannon at the rounds that followed seven weeks later – although there were still plenty of other extremely fast junior riders to keep Hannon honest.

But Hannon had the measure of them too, winning the 90-minute junior race at round two near Pa-

hiatua/Masterton on Saturday and repeating the dose at round three near Dannevirke on Easter Monday.

Runner-up to Hannon on Saturday was Te Awamutu’s Nixon Parkes (KTM), with New Plymouth’s Josh Houghton (Husqvarna) claiming third place, while runner-up to Hannon on Monday was Parkes again, with New Plymouth’s Blake Lusk (Yamaha) finishing third on that occasion.

This is Hannon’s first title win in the national cross-country championships, although he has previously won national mini motocross, Woodville Motocross Grand Prix titles and three New Zealand Mini TT Championship titles.

Meanwhile, Oparau’s James Scott (Honda) led virtually from start to finish to win the three-hour senior races on both days over Easter, on each occasion taking the chequered flag ahead of Napier’s Tommy Watts (Yamaha), with Taupo’s Wil

Yeoman (Yamaha) finishing third both times.

Similarly to Hannon, Scott also wrapped up his senior title with a round to spare. The fourth and final round is to be held in Central Hawke’s Bay on May 15.
