Johnsonville’s Brooke Pou has been named as the recipient of the 2022 Liz Stringer Curatorial Internship at the New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pnjkenga Whakaata.

The internship provides the recipient with hands on curatorial skills across a wide range of activities at the gallery, which involves curating a show featuring works from the New Zealand Portrait Gallery Te Pnjkenga Whakaata collection and assist with upcoming exhibitions while contributing new perspectives, connections and a fresh appreciation of portraiture.

New Zealand Portrait Gallery’s Director, Jaenine Parkinson, says Brooke has been working with her team as a Gallery Supervisor over the past 18 months and has demonstrated a direct passion for working in the sector.

Reflecting on the achievement, Brooke says “I decided to apply for the Liz Stringer Curatorial Internship because I wanted a chance to develop hands-on curatorial and collection skills, along with the fact I believe it’s a great opportunity for emerging professionals to gain experience in an incredible art gallery.

It’s important for recent graduates to move from theory into practice, with the support of experts in the industry. I think the internship is an exciting start to my career as a curator.”

Brooke says her love of the arts was cemented during her childhood.

“I whakapapa to NJƗpuhi and NgƗi Te Rangi, although I grew up here in Te Whanganuia-Tara. My passion for the arts was cultivated from a young age during school trips to art galleries and museums around the city.

During my undergraduate studies, I majored in both Art

History and English Literature, which has inspired me to explore the connections between the two in my upcoming exhibition. I graduated with Honours in Art History earlier this year at Victoria University of Wellington Te Herenga Waka where I was supervised by Associate Professor Dr. Peter Brunt, who I’ve also worked with as a research assistant and whose guidance has been integral to my success.”

Brooke commenced her internship this month and will be assisting with the upcoming Portraits from the Fletcher Trust Collection exhibition (15 Sep-

tember - 11 December). She is also working on her own exhibition Authors of Aotearoa, which will run from mid-December 2022 to March 2023.

“Authors have the power to create new worlds through their work. Through portraiture, we can recognise those responsible for some of Aotearoa’s best literature and discover a few lesser known but equally gifted writers. With this exhibition, I seek to explore the connection between Aotearoa’s authors and artists.

A wonderful part of the internship is that it encourages us to offer fresh perspectives on

portraits in the Gallery’s collection. I aim to include portraits of MƗori and Pasifika authors who have been integral in forming our nation’s literary scene,” said Brooke.

The internship was established

by New Zealand Portrait Gallery Trustee Liz Stringer in 2017 to give recent graduates essential hands-on experience in exhibition making and to provide that vital and elusive ‘first break’ for talented young people who show so much potential.

Crofton Downs Primary School celebrates creativity Crofton Downs Primary School recently celebrated with creativity and culture for Matariki, hosting an evening performance. This coincided with a Matariki Art Exhibition which was initiated by Tania Parker as a Fundraiser for the PTA. Local artist and adjudicator, Rochelle Gore, praised the exhibition and noted each piece was unique, “What a special creative school”.

Crofton Downs Primary School was generously supported by Sandy Brewer and Grant Meese of the Capital Theatre Trust and G&T Productions, who donated four premier tickets to see ‘Les Misérables’ at the newly opened St James Theatre. A package worth $500.

The theme of the exhibition was ‘our standing place’, our 7njUDQgawaewae, and contained stories of Matariki, the Taniwha whose adventures created Wellington Harbour, and our Manu - the native birds of Crofton Downs. Pictured above is one of the awarded artists, Max Mulcahy.

Capital flocks together to see bird numbers fly sky high The latest monitoring survey shows bird numbers are soaring in the capital – but while there’s lots to tweet about, there is still more work to be done.

Thanks to years of collaboration between Wellington City Council, Zealandia, Predator Free Wellington and great mahi from thousands of volunteers and groups around the capital native bird species numbers are constantly increasing and predator activity is down.

Five-minute bird counts have been carried out at 100 bird count stations in forest habitat throughout Wellington every year since 2011, monitoring trends in diversity, abundance and distribution of native forest birds.

lington trapping volunteers both in reserves and their backyards continue to create safe spaces for the birds jumping the fence. Their continued effort is paving the way for birds to explore new areas and in some cases, even establish themselves. Re-introduced titipounamu have successfully bred in Wellington’s reserves for the first time in over 100 years in the 2021/22 season.

“Our mission has always been to connect people with nature, and for them to feel an emotional attachment and want to protect it, so it’s rewarding to witness that first-hand across a wide range of communities and demographics.”

Last year, to mark the 10 years of the report and celebrate our successes, Wellington City Council launched a video with the key stats and findings to tell the story of birdlife in PǀQeke.

Opera singer Filipe Manu wins Lexus Song Quest Tenor singer Filipe Manu has been named as the winner of the 2022 Lexus Song Quest, Aotearoa’s most prestigious opera competition.

The winner Filipe Manu and runner up Felicity Tomkins were announced live on stage on Saturday, in front of an enthusiastic crowd at Wellington’s Michael Fowler Centre, as well as adoring audiences from around the world who tuned into the livestream and the live radio broadcast.

Filipe has walked away with a life-changing immediate cash prize of $20,000, a study scholarship of $27,000, plus economy international travel up to the value of $3,000.

“The first time I went to Lexus Song Quest, I was wearing a Warriors jersey and a snapback - I had no idea what the competition was!

“This year was my third time competing, and last night was a combination of hard work and my persistence over the past few years.

“Lexus Song Quest is such an important competition for young singers, and I’m so thankful to everyone who has supported and encouraged me throughout this experience.”

Head Judge, internationally acclaimed bass baritone and previous Lexus Song Quest winner, Teddy Tahu Rhodes said he has been very impressed with the

Metlink welcomes cheap fare extension Metlink has welcomed the government’s extension of half price public transport fares until the end of January 2023.

The extension was announced by Transport Minister Michael Wood on 17 July as part of a package to reduce “cost of living pressures”.

Metlink General Manager Samantha Gain said half price fares had increased patronage on Metlink’s train, bus and ferry services across the Wellington region.

“Even though our services are being stretched by seasonal sickness and Covid cases among drivers, as well as the ongoing driver shortage, Metlink is ready to extend the fare reductions,” Ms Gain said.

Half price fares were implemented by Metlink on 1 April for a three-month trial which the government extended to 31 August in its May budget.

“Metlink and its service operators can easily continue half price fares for all passengers through the Christmas, New Year period, and school summer holidays,” Ms Gain said.

“The extension will also give us more time to implement the government’s Community Connect scheme.”

The scheme permanently reduces public transport fares for Community Services Card holders by 50 percent from 1 February 2023.

“With about 90,000 Community Services Card holders in the Wellington region, Metlink is working hard to ensure they’ll continue to have easy access to half price fares from February,” Ms Gain said.

Greater Wellington regional councillors will vote to extend half price fares for Metlink services on 25 August.

Route 21 Karori bus MID WINTER PRICE BLITZ stop changes Metlink and Wellington City Council are proposing changes to bus routes in Karori.

They are proposing changes to some route 21 bus stops on Beauchamp Street and Verviers Street in Karori.

It also includes removing two stops (4393 and 4394) to optimise the distance between bus stops – resulting in an increase of four on-street parking spaces.

Also making two stops fully accessible (4392 and 4395) – resulting in the loss of four on-street parking spaces.

Installing one new shelter (4395).

Upgrading one existing shelter (4392).

The overall number of on-street parking spaces will remain the same.

Optimising the distance between bus stops means better access for all and a quicker journey time.

Plot for football season begins to take shape

The plot thickens.

Fourteen games down, four to go in the Men’s Central Region Football League.

First out of the blocks for the weekend were Miramar Rangers hosting TFS North Wellington at David Farrington Park. The game ebbed and flowed in the first spell and both teams went into the sheds at half time with a goal each. Sam Mason-Smith was clinical in the penalty area for Rangers and got the home side on the board after 39 minutes.

Norths Captain, Gavin Hoy, evened things up with a penalty in the 42nd minute after a North’s player was taken out in the box. Hamish Watson made it 2 goals for Miramar early in the second spell and Mason-Smith got another to make it 3-1 to Miramar in the 53rd minute. Norths hung on and tried to even the match up, but the momentum had well and truly swung to the men from Miramar. Territory and possession dominance

by Miramar in the last 30 minutes made for a tough last

spell for Norths. It was all over without doubt when Ryan Feutz got a brace of his own, three minutes from full time and once more again, dead on 90 minutes.

Khandallah REBUS welcome new members At the last meeting of The REBUS Club of Khandallah two new members were welcomed into the club.

Guest speaker at this meeting was Jon Duffy, Chief Executive of Consumer New Zealand.

Jon grew up in Khandallah and mentioned how he enjoyed coming back to the suburb.

Jon’s talk was entitled ‘’Being a Consumer in 2022”.

Consumer NZ was established in 1959, and is an independent, non-profit organisation dedicated to getting New Zealanders a fairer deal. When it began the main focus was on the Consumer magazine, and Jon also talked about other ways Consumer NZ is ensuring people are getting a fair deal. He mentioned the duopoly of the Supermarkets in NZ and Consumers NZ’s petition to allow more competition in the marketplace.

This was signed by 78,000 people. He talked about how some manufacturers are making it difficult to repair household appliances, by restricting access to the working parts, and Consumers NZ’s endeavours to make all appliances repairable.

John Duffy, the CEO of Consumer NZ, was the guest speaker at the latest REBUS Club of Khandallah meeting.

REBUS is a club for seniors and meets on the last Friday of the month. The next meeting is on Friday, 29th July at 10 am, at the Khandallah Bowling Club, Woodmancote Road. The guest speaker will be Juliane Tandy, from the Citizens Advice Bureau.

The most common general signs of illness are fever, pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, cough, headache and rash. Fever (body temperature above 37°C) indicates that the body is ‘fighting’ infection from either bacteria or viruses.

Children’s natural defence mechanisms are less well-developed than adults’ immune systems, so children are at higher risk of infections.

Fever accompanied by cough, runny or blocked nose and headache can signify the common cold. “Ask us about our Children’s Pain & Fever fact card”, recommend Self Care pharmacists, “because this has a lot of helpful hints for looking after sick children. Also it indicates what other signs to look out for in children that indicate more serious illnesses.”

Keeping your child comfortable in bed, giving plenty of fluids, and using liquid medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen to reduce fever, are best when your child has a cold.

“But” advice from Self Care pharmacists is “use proper medicine-measuring spoons when measuring-out doses of liquid medicines. Don’t use kitchen teaspoons because they are not accurate, the volume varies from spoon to spoon, and your child will not receive the correct dose of medicine.”

It is important to look out for sore throats in children as it can lead to Rheumatic Fever. This is a serious illness that affects mainly Maori and Pacific children and young people, aged four and above.

Sore throats generally clear up by themselves but “strep” sore throats can lead to rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease which can be life threatening. It is important to check up children with sore throats so if they do have a “strep” sore throat they can be treated with antibiotics and stop the illness progressing any further.

If you are unsure then get in touch with your pharmacist, doctor or nurse.

Parents can encourage their children to take simple steps to help prevent the spread of some illnesses.

Children should cover their mouths and noses when they sneeze and cough, and then wash their hands straight after. Washing hands is also VERY important after going to the toilet, and before eating. They should not share cups and drink bottles, nor spoons and other eating utensils. Tissues are best for blowing noses, and then they should be thrown away immediately after use.

Immunisation is generally one of the most effective ways of protecting children against infections that can cause serious diseases and associated complications (including death).

All forms of immunisation work by causing the body to produce an immune response, in the same way it would if exposed to the disease but without the child suffering all the symptoms and consequences. In the future, when the child comes into contact with the disease, the immune system responds quickly and helps prevent the child developing the disease.

The World Health organisation and the Ministry of Health recommend immunisation for your children. However there may be cases where it is not suitable to immunise and it is important to see your pharmacist or doctor regarding possible risks and/or contraindications.

Children with asthma or allergies, or who are recovering from an illness, such as a common cold, can be immunised.

Free immunisation, at specific times in a child’s life according to the Ministry of Health’s immunisation schedule, is available to all children in New Zealand, to protect against a number of diseases – diphtheria, haemophilus influenzae type b (a cause of childhood meningitis), pneumococcal disease, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, polio, tetanus and whooping cough.

Side effects from vaccines can sometimes occur and include redness and soreness at the injection site. There may also be mild fever.

While these symptoms may be upsetting at the time, the benefit is protection from the disease.

More serious reactions to immunisation are very rare.

Ask your Self Care pharmacists for a copy of the Children’s Illnesses and Children’s Pain & Fever fact cards that contains useful information for parents.

Buying With Friends/ Relatives? YIP! Hey Everyone! As cost-of-living rises, we are finding more and more people are looking at buying houses together to share the financial commitment. This is a great idea and makes a lot of financial sense.

However, we also see the other side of the situation where things haven’t gone so well – here are 5 things you should consider: 1. Understand the shared financial commitment Buying a property is a big financial commitment, not only because of the ongoing monthly repayments, but also the responsibility for the regular expenses involved in running and maintaining the property. A decision should not be based in emotion but in cold hard numbers. Don’t let your desire to ‘help’ a friend cloud your judgement, only commit what you can afford.

2. Be honest Being as honest and open as possible about each of your own expenses, spending, savings and debts is crucial. You both need a true picture of each of your financial strengths and weaknesses. Discuss what your current budgets are and how they will have to change to manage the new expenses you will both be committing to.

3. Decide on clear terms of co-ownership There are a couple of options to choose from in terms of the ownership structure.

‘Tenants in Common’ gives each party a share in the ownership of the property, while ‘Joint Tenants’ means the two of you together own the property as one entity, without individual shares or rights of

ownership. We would suggest you speak to a lawyer to decide what is best.

4. Task agreement You are joint owners, so it is important each party is contributing fairly. Ensure your co-ownership agreement covers points such as division of expenses (like cleaning and maintenance of the property, rates, utilities etc.), division tasks like who will take care of the garden, who co-ordinates tradespeople, who organising the regular maintenance, etc. All of these ‘jobs’ need to be considered and allocated in advance to avoid confusions and resentment in the future.

Tone-deaf NZR losing touch with reality New Zealand Rugby (NZR) clearly cannot handle the heat which comes from the All Blacks’ poor on-field performances.

I’d suggest NZR’s PR efforts have been worse than anything the All Blacks have produced in this Ian Foster-era.

The ignorance and arrogance of cancelling the Sunday morning press call (without Foster’s input, apparently) have been discussed and rightly mocked and All Blacks media manager Jo Malcolm

appeared to fall on her sword midweek, confirming she made the decision to cancel the traditional Sunday morning press conference after a test.

I doubt she made the decision alone.

NZR continue to do themselves, the All Blacks’ team and Foster no favours with their out of touch approach to the media.

NZR continues to build walls to keep the media out and they’re creating a vacuum which can only be filled by speculation of all kinds from people in

the sports media who are sick of being mistreated.

NZR needs to understand the sports media is there to cover rugby, not serve it.

NZR have no right to control the narrative from journalists and if they continue to have an adversarial relationship with the sports media as a whole, then they can have no complaints when things become toxic.

NZR need to have more respect for the job the media does.

That means they must gain a collective thick skin, and accept the good and the bad, written and spoken, about the current state of the game in New Zealand.

Their media approach by NZR has proven to be utterly tone-deaf and the dis-interest in the All Blacks from the average fan is partly being caused by the holier-than-thou take NZR currently has towards media relations.

NZR have not done Foster or Sam Cane any favours in their bullish

approach.

Silence will only make all involved more unpopular.

It’s my belief the top brass of NZR have little respect for the rugby intelligence of the average New Zealander on the topic of rugby.

Yes, we are a passionate bunch of fans with high expectations of the All Blacks but the vast majority know good rugby from bad and are far from the fools those at the top of NZR clearly think they are.

Toby aims for bright future If the senior men’s race at the 2022 New Zealand Cross Country Championships and Inaugural NZ Cross Country Relays at Spa Thermal Park later this month turns into a “horses for courses” race then Toby Gualter must be among the lead contenders.

The 21-year-old Wellington Olympic Harrier was a commanding victor at the iconic Taupo venue when triumphing by a ten-second margin over 9km at the North Island Cross Country Championships earlier this month.

Toby would also appear perfectly equipped to produce a powerful assault for the prestigious national title contested over 10km on Saturday.

“Spa Park is undulating which is

perfect for me.

“I enjoy the hills and the different terrain.

Toby started his sporting life predominantly as a high energy first XI soccer player for Tawa College.

However, a chance opportunity to run at the Wellington Road Race Championships as a Year 10 student set in motion his athletics career.

On the back of this he was approached by the then Athletics Wellington Sport Development Manager Jo Murray, who encouraged Toby to take running more seriously and join a club. Toby heeded the advice and hooked up with Olympic Harriers and coach Mark Anderson.

“I come from Tawa, which is a very hilly suburb. I was always running up and down the hills as a kid, even when training for football, so I think that gave me great strength.

“Ultimately, I think I will be best suited to the road.

Keen to develop the next stage of his athletics career on the US collegiate scene in January 2020 he started life at East Michigan University.

Unfortunately, the pandemic severely curtailed his ability to compete.

After returning to the US, the sports management student returned under the coaching of Mark Rinker.

Retuning home in late-May he ran a half marathon PB of 67:44 to

finish second behind Michael Voss in the Wellington Half Marathon before claiming a 10-second win at Spa Thermal Park to bank the North Island Cross Country title.

Currently training with Will Anthony his preparation for national cross has gone well ahead of his return to

the US in mid-August.

Believing the course is not only an ideal cross country test for all competitors but also attractive for spectators he does not hesitate to call on the athletics community to attend on July 30-31.

“The goal is to win,” he says.
