Congrats Nga Hau e Wha Continued from page 1 Not only did they win but were undefeated in their grade.

Additional to their win, seven members of the team were selected to represent New Zealand and Ayala Toman was awarded player of the tournament.

The under 14s are part of the Nga Hau e Wha o Wainuiomata Marae Rugby League Club set up by Renee Davies and Jermaine Pasena with under 13 girls, under 14 girls and under 14 boys and girls teams.

“Altogether we have had about 100 children register with Nga Hau e Wha and we have had 13 named in New Zealand so it just shows here in Wainuiomata there is so much potential just to do that in such a short space of time.”

“It was about connecting youth back to the Marae and using sport as a way of doing it,” Renee says.

Renee says they have had huge support from the wider community and have also held events and other things to fund-

raise to get to the Rotorua event.

Renee and Jermaine put together the five teams. There isn’t a pathway for them to play the sport after primary school and they typically go and play rugby.

“We had a really good crew and really good management that looked after the girls and they had a good balance of seriousness and fun,” Renee says.

Coach of the under 14 girls team Ken Laban says a huge thanks goes to all the support from the community during

the lead up to the competition.

“Behind the scenes we had so much whanau and community support to help the team achieve their potential at the tournament,” Ken says.

“And on behalf of the team and their whanau thank you to our supporters for their aroha and support.”

Following the success there will be a get together to celebrate the season and from there they are looking to participate in the Pacific Cup at the end of the year, Renee says.

Robots take over Hub By: Gerald Rillstone Part of the Hub events during the school holidays saw JackBord Robots descend on the Library for all to get involved in and learn.

Created by the JackBord Trust it is based in Kapiti with the purpose of increasing the number of children choosing to pursue coding, science, electronics and technology subjects, using the JackBord unit.

Jack Penman, a Waikanae resident and Creator of the JackBord Jack Penman with one of the Robots at Wainuiomata HUB. electronics engineer has been working with Photo Gerald Rillstone. students at Paraparaumu College the last few years developing computing and robotics devices.

He put on the event at the Wainuiomata Hub during the holidays to give local kids a chance to learn to code and solve real world problems.

It took a bit of working out Jack says and after a number of iterations he developed the ultimate computing device called the “JackBord”, to drive all sorts of devices and robots – that kids can build themselves in entirely new ways.

Part of his vision was to restore the Kiwi DIY know-how that’s fading in younger generations.

He saw a lot of technology consumption in a wasteful ‘disposable culture’ without understanding where it all comes from or how it works. Jack wanted to instill some new creativity, along with resourcefulness and sustainability. The JackBord needed to be versatile, robust, and affordable for all school children, and suitable for teaching robotics.

“Students love working with the JackBord and inventing their own robots,” Jack says.

Kids access the JackBord via their chromebook, laptop or smartphone and it is builtfrom Aluminium, rather than plastic, for durability and allows Jackano parts to be bolted onto it.

He says funding is now needed to take JackBord to the next level.

“We envisage the JackBord being widely available throughout New Zealand. A registered charitable trust has been established, the JackBord Trust (cc57106) to facilitate this.

Our primary need is for the Trust to retain ownership and any profits fully retained to enable the JackBord to be further developed.”

inbrief news Testing programme to protect consumers New Zealand Food Safety (NZFS) is extending a programme of testing to determine the extent of Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) in poultry flocks in New Zealand and to reduce the risk to consumers.

The new testing programme widens the focus and includes 20 egg-laying facilities and five chick rearers that collectively account for 80 per cent of the industry’s table eggs, Deputy Director-General Vincent Arbuckle says .

The information collected from the survey will also inform the development of regulations to manage potential risk on poultry farms which is currently underway.

There have been 47 cases of Salmonella Enteritidis reported in 2021 to date. Genome testing has indicated a strong association with the preparation and consumption of poultry products, making this further stage of testing and reminders to consumers a prudent step at this time.

Prince Ali heads to Wainuiomata

By Gerald Rillstone A junior version of the Disney Broadway musical Aladdin is coming to Wainuiomata in the October school holidays.

From 6–10 October 2021, the Acting Out team will perform six live shows and bring the magic of Aladdin to life.

Now in their fourth year, Wainuiomata’s youth theatre, Acting Out NZ, is excited to be tackling another Disney classic (they performed Beauty and the Beast in 2019).

President, Jeremy Yuile, admits that “performing Disney has its own unique challenges especially with costuming.

“But this particular show is far more dance heavy than any other show we’ve produced to date.

Luckily, our kids have embraced this element of the show and the choreography is looking spectacular.”

Circumstances have meant there’ll be some changes to the way they usually do things this year.

“Previously, our shows were performed at Wainuiomata High School’s Auditorium but with the school’s rebuild taking place and the auditorium out of action, we had to find a new performance venue for this year’s show.”

Teen phone counselling service Barnardos 0800 What’s Up counselling service has launched a nationwide two-month campaign with partners MediaWorks Foundation and OfficeMax to help reach children who need support, following a large 31% increase in online chats from children and teenagers.

The helpline is New Zealand’s only children and teen counselling service offering free calls and online chats, every day of the week without any appointments necessary. In the last year, phone calls to 0800 What’s Up has increased by 31 percent and continues to rise every day.

Perry Rush, President of the New Zealand Principals’ Federation says, “while our teachers often play an emotional support role for pupils, their expertise is not counselling. Queen Street upgrade Dear Editor, It’s great to see Mayor Barry and his council are pleased that they are spending 8.5 million on the Queen Street upgrade.

It’s great they feel this money is better

spent there than maybe going towards fixing the infrastructure projects that affect everyone, not just a few or a minority.

One wonders if they had a leaky roof at home they would go out and buy a flash new car rather than fix what should

be a priority.

May quote the Mayor “I don’t mind making the hard/tough calls” will make them, the right ones for everyone.

Councils get your street lights on earlier at least before 5:00 pm We have lived over here for 65 years and over the years more cars and more clueless drivers.

Potential cleanfill sites in Wainuiomata By: Gerald Rillstone

Hutt City Council is looking for a new site for dumping cleanfill and of the 10 being considered 6 are in Wainuiomata.

With building and development around the country at full steam and the current Coast Road Cleanfill due to be closed by the end of the year a new area is being looked for by council.

According to the councils website statement on cleanfills, cleanfills are a type of landfill which only accepts material that is free from any contamination.

This ‘ clean’ material is identified in ‘A Guide to the Management of Cleanfills (2002)’ and includes: clay, rock, (uncontaminated) soil and some building materials. This material should have no bad effects on people or

the environment after it has been buried.

New requirements for cleanfilling are given in the Proposed Natural Resources Plan (PNRP) to promote good management practice. It is important that cleanfills only contain material that is ‘clean’, (no hazardous waste), and are well sited and managed.

Cleanfill sites are not designed in the same way as landfills – they don’t have leachate collection systems for example, to protect the environment from potential negative impacts.

Poorly managed cleanfills can release pollutants into groundwater or surface water, which is one of the reasons for the requirement to keep records available regarding the volume and origin of the material placed into the cleanfill.

GARDENING THIS WEEK CARBOHYDRATES or SUGARS: By Wally Richards Carbohydrates are a very interesting subject in relationship to plants and ourselves.

They are the sugars, starches, and dietary fiber that occur in plant foods and dairy products.

Carbohydrates are mainly found in plant foods.

They also occur in dairy products in the form of a milk sugar called lactose.

Plants produce carborhydraes using sunlight and carbon dioxcide.

CO2 ‘Green plants create carbohydrates on their own through the process of photosynthesis.

The function of carbohydrates in plants and animals is that they are a source of fuel for growth.

If even one basic ingredient a plant needs for photosynthesis is absent or lacking, the plant’s health can suffer, resulting in stunted growth or reduced production.

The gardener who provides the amounts of water and light the plant requires for this food production is rewarded by a healthy plant.

People breathe oxygen in and carbon dioxide out, but for a plant to make carbohydrates, the leaves

take in carbon dioxide through the stomata on the leaf surfaces.

From the stomata, the mesophyll cells use the carbon dioxide to combine it with water and light for photosynthesis.

After the plant uses the carbon dioxide in photosynthesis, the waste product is oxygen, which is released through the stomata on the leaves.’

To increase plant growth in glasshouses Nursery people release carbon dioxide during daylight hours which greatly increases the growth rate of their crops.

In prehistoric times we know that plant growth was massive with giant cycads and ferns caused by the abundance of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere which was a result of a lot of vocanic activity.

Those giant forests became the fossil fuels we have used to progress our civilizations.

Science tell us the CO2 levels in prehistoric times was 2000 to 4000 ppm.

Currently CO2 in our atmosphere is only 412 ppm.

Plants thrive best in a atmosphere of 1000 ppm of CO2 or more.

Which leads to an important

quandrum; if we reduce CO2 levels to supposedly avoid climate change then would not plant’s growth be reduced and our food chain suffer?

Thus we need greern plants to take the CO2 we breath out (or produce) and convert it to oxygen during daylight hours.

At least half of Earth’s oxygen comes from the ocean.

The majority of this production is from oceanic plankton drifting plants, algae, and some bacteria that can photosynthesize. One particular species, Prochlorococcus, is the smallest photosynthetic organism on Earth.

Photosynthesis requires sunlight, carbon dioxide and water to produce glucose. This simple sugar is a carbohydrate that combines with other sugars to form the plant’s structure and stores energy for future use.

Glucose produced from photosynthesis flows to the rest of the plant through phloem, which are small tubes that run throughout the plant.

The plant stores the surplus carbohydrates in the crown and roots, where they will stay until the plant needs them during dark hours or

during the winter when deciduous trees lack leaves to produce more food through photosynthesis.

What if we were to give our plants some extra carbohydrates that they do not have to covert from CO2 and sunlight?

This is where we can have some fun and play with the plants intake and use of sugars.

A mixture of one to two table spoons of molasses dissolved in a litre of hot water and placed in a trigger spray bottle is all you need to experiment with.

When doing trials you need a control and a trial plant to be able to determine what effect the result will be from visual comparison.

Any two 0f the same plants growing near each other will be ideal so you could plant two seedlings in the same area about half a metre apart.

You will treat both the same other than the trial plant which will receive a spray of the sugary solution either daily, or every few days.

If you want to take this a step further you could have more than one trial plants.

One you spray every day, one your

spray every 2-3 days, one you spray once a week.

If the sugary solution makes any difference then after x amount of time you should see a lot of difference to the growth rate and size of the plants.

If you chose lettuce for the control and trial plants then you may find later on when the plants are larger a difference in taste of the leaves that you could pluck from them.

The possible outcome will be that the trial plants have bigger leaves than that of the control plant.

This in turn would create bigger plants to eventually harvest and maybe tastier ones also.

If later in the season you could also try the same trial process with a few tomato plants of the same variety planted about a metre apart.

Once again you may find that the leaves of the treated plants get bigger than the control plant and the fruit are also larger.

You may also find that the treated plants have more disease resistance and less pest problems.

An interesting experiment that will cost you very little to do and you maybe surprised at the results.

s 1 large onion Onion, roughly chopped s 3 tbsp mild curry paste s 400g can chopped tomatoes s 2 tsp vegetable bouillon powder s 1 tbsp finely chopped ginger s 1 yellow pepper, deseeded and chopped s 2 skinless chicken legs, fat removed s 30g pack fresh coriander, leaves chopped s Rice

1. Put 1 roughly chopped large onion, 3 tbsp mild curry paste, a 400g can chopped tomatoes, 2 tsp vegetable bouillon powder, 1 tbsp finely chopped ginger and 1 chopped yellow pepper into the slow cooker pot with a third of a can of water and stir well.

2. Add 2 skinless chicken legs, fat removed, and push them under all the other ingredients so that they are completely submerged. Cover with the lid and chill in the fridge overnight.

3. The next day, cook on Low for 6 hrs until the chicken and vegetables are really tender.

4. Stir in the the chopped leaves of 30g coriander just before serving over rice.

Olympics don’t sit easy despite the entertainment The Olympics are happening.

Six months ago, I would have given you good odds to say they would not.

The Tokyo Games are forging ahead in the name of athlete bubbles and hand sanitisation and social distancing.

Athletes have already contracted Covid-19 in and around the athlete’s village and yet this event does not look to be slowing down.

Personally, I do not think they should be going ahead.

The world has a global pandemic

to deal with and that outranks a sports extravaganza masked as a show of goodwill and unity.

The Japanese public seem to have soured on hosting the Olympics many months ago and that is not changing now that athletes are competing.

You cannot blame them.

No Japanese fan can attend any of the events in the true sense of the word.

much money to have the pin pulled on it at this point.

Rules around health and safety seem to be made up or changed on a daily basis.

We have all heard of adaptation, but it is getting a little silly.

I have sympathy for the athletes on numerous fronts.

Competing at an Olympics I’m sure is a life goal and when you’ve had to wait an extra year, I’m sure those taking part are hungrier for success than ever.

I feel for them because that drive to succeed comes at the risk of their health.

Regardless of the best intentions of team officials and the International Olympic Committee, Covid-19 may find a way around all precautions.

I am also thrilled for childhood friend and sports journalist, Guy Heveldt who is covering the Olympics live in Tokyo for TVNZ 1 News.

As a fellow journalist, I know how highly coveted an Olympic Games

assignment is.

Like the athletes, it is a career highlight for any sports journalist and I assure you, Guy has worked his tail off for the opportunity he will undoubtedly make the most of.

Yes, the sports fan in me is excited to watch sports I don’t pay much attention to outside the Olympics.

But that is easy to say from the comfort of my couch.

If the Olympics sit uncomfortably for you, rest assured, you are not the only one.

Wainui harriers finish in top 10 After a day of high winds and torrential down-pours, only eight Wainuiomata Harriers runners braved the conditions and headed up to Harcourt Park last Sunday to compete in the Wellington Center Cross-country Championships.

After the weekend of appalling weather, the course was very wet and muddy underfoot making the challenging course even harder, especially in the later races where a few more showers added insult

to injury. The course included several short sharp climbs and lots of mud on the 2km circuit.

It is hard to make a comparison to last year, as due to covid restrictions the event didn’t go ahead, but the few athletes who did attend performed well, and of the 8 athletes representing Wainuiomata 5 finished in the top ten in their respective races.

The event is also a selection race for the National Championships

being held in Otago next month.

As a club we have one more cross-country race for 2021 and then head into the road racing part of the season which is highly suited to track runners due to the speed and consistency of the terrain. Next month our club also hosts the Wellington Road Championships on Waterworks Road in the water catchment area of Wainui. This event brings out the best of Wellington runners,

trying to gain selection for the National Road Championships, and was the only major race held last year, again due to covid restrictions.

Reserves go to the top of the table

The weather made up for last weekend as the sun came out to play for what was a glorious weekend for Football.

Our Reserves team climbed to top spot on the table with a big 2-1 win over Petone. Goals to Jarod Smith and Cameron Blake helped the lads gain control of the league as other results went their way.

At Richard Prouse it was derby day and an actioned packed day with 4 games on featuring 6 of our teams. First at 12:30 our Halfbaked side walked away comfortable 4-0 winners thanks to a Callum Waugh hat-trick. At the same time it was the first derby game between our Fiddick’s side and our Roundballs side. With the Roundballs 3-0 up after 10 minutes it looked like it would be a day to forget for the

Fiddick’s however they had other ideas. After the first 45 minutes, they found themselves turning it around to lead 5-4. While the goals may have slowed down in the second half, the entertainment didn’t and the game finished an astounding 6-6.

At 2:30 our Masters 3 Pasifika side fell 4-2 to Upper Hutt in a game which had 3 penalties. On the field over it was derby day number two with the Masters 6 Pasifika side playing our OC’s side. In a feisty battle it was Pasifika with a comfortable 5-0 win which saw them continue to put pressure on the league leaders.

Over the hill our Undertakers found themselves on their 6th 4-3 loss of the season as the fell away to Upper Hutt at Maidstone Park.

Jamie Patmore added to his goal scoring tally by scoring 2 of the

sides 3 goals.

Sunday was here and the Under 17’s kicked started their third round at home to Petone. Hat-Tricks to Shivjesh Nair and Sho Takayanagi helped them to a comfortable 15-3 win.

Our ladies followed that game with their last league game of the season where they hosted already champions Wellington United Opals. This game will be remembered not for the score line but for a moment that showed that no matter what sport you play or where you are in the world, a major sporting event can bring everyone together.

At the 30 minute mark, the referee blew his whistle and both teams left the field to gather around an iPhone to cheer on Wellington Olympian Lewis Clareburt in his gold medal race. The game resumed and was played in good spirits as Wellington

United walked away 5-0 winners.

Our Central League side rounded off the weekend away to Western Suburbs. Despite a strong effort from the lads and the woodwork interrupting on occasions, it was the home side who walked away with all 3 points.
