Wainuiomata Marae played host for a cultural exchange to an entourage of diplomatic guests headed by Matar Almansoori, Charge d’Affaires and Counsellor to the United Arab Emirates Embassy.

Having supplied the Marae with 150 food parcels during the pandemic Matar was keen to meet at the Marae and talk about the similarities in his culture with Maori culture.

inbrief news Think kind Voting for the 2020 Think Kind Student Competition closes at the end of this week, and Kiwis are being encouraged to show support for their favourite entry while they still can.

The competition, which is run by the NZ Vegetarian Society, promotes kindness to animals. It helps young people identify and develop skills that can be used to benefit others.

This year, the competition received entries from across the country. Among the final entries are a fundraiser, a drawing of Papatūānuku (the earth mother) suffering because we are not looking after her, and even a mobile app to help us reduce food waste!

Hutt South won on hard work

When it came to campaiging for the Hutt South Labour seat Ginny Andersen and her team of volunteers put in the hard yards making 22,523 phone calls and door knocked 10,879 homes more than any electroate in the country.

The result was a win and not only that.

It turned the region red with the standing Labour mayor Campbell Barry and the party vote for Labour and a Labour minister representing the area in government.

For Ginny the hard yards start now she says and with a lot of the ground work laid she is ready to build on the investments already made in infastructure in the region.

“We need to make sure local businesses are supported and do the best we possibly can and make sure the Hutt looks strong after three years and part of that is housing and transport and all of those things coming together,” Ginny says.

“I don’t anticipate it will be easy especially housing, we have done a lot for wages but we need to do more for benefits as well.”

There are still adjustments to be made to what the world will look like with Covid and there maybe some benefits to come out of it.

“There are some clear benefits locally I feel there is a lot more money from people buying from each other than there normally would, be it seems like there is more going around than we thought there would be,” she says.

It is important for the 14 billion dollars put aside by the government to be assessed as to where it will be needed and where it will give the most benefit she

“In the Hutt I really want to work closely with the council I think there are some great oppertunities and for the first time ever we have a Labour government a Labour MP and a Labour mayor and I am excited by that and to work with them particularly in the areas of housing and transport.”

The Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ (ARFNZ) have confirmed the New Zealand Respiratory Conference (NZRC) to be held at Te Papa in Wellington on 5-6 November will be going ahead.

The event is one of the few in-person health care conferences to take place in Wellington since COVID-19 reached New Zealand and is one of the largest gatherings of health professionals in New Zealand with more than 150 delegates already registered.

The two-day event has also been endorsed by the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP) and enables attendees to gain essential professional development credits which are required for general practitioners, nurses, physiotherapists and pharmacists every year.

Fifty things to do

Konini Primary School have launched their 50 Things to do before leaving Konini Primary programme.

In addition to their short and long term Education Outside of the Classroom (EOTC) plans principal Matt Pegg says they recognised there are so many amazing opportunities in the local community for families to get out and have fun so building on our in-school plans they have created a fun EOTC grid titled “50 Things to do Before Leaving Konini Primary” that are perfect for family adventure regardless of the weather.

These experiences are designed to be completed over the time they are at Konini Primary.

The initiative got under way with 85 of the schools junior students taking a trip to Remutaka Forest Park to take a bush walk and then with the help of 26 people from marketing and media company OMD, who as part of their “do a good day” project, took part in activities from bivouac

Wainui Folk Festival By: Gerald Rillstone For fifty six years the Wellington Folk Festival has been held during Labour weekend and for festival goers Brookfield Outdoor Education Centre was the perfect venue and the 20th time it has been held there.

Nestled in the bush in a sheltered valley the three day event bought together keen folk from throughout the country.

Festival president Gerard Hudson says the neat thing about the festival is it is so inter-generational.

“The variety of music at the festival is from all cultures although we don’t have

a lot of rap or hip hop, but we did have a band that played music like Jethro Tull,” Gerard says.

“We normally have international guests but this year was a bit different but without the overseas entertainers we still had about four festivals worth of kiwi’s.”

There were ten main acts and a range of workshops and interest groups at the festival and the Balladair tent provided the opportunity for anyone who felt like it to get up and perform.

Each festival is a little different Gerard says and they try to tweak it so that it offers something new each year.

Craig Sharp With Labour Weekend having just been there will be more New Zealanders working away in their gardens than we have seen before, for many a long year.

The reason for this is several, lockdowns, financial and health.

The cost of vegetables and fruit purchased, will keep going up in price, otherwise the commercial growers will be out of business, as their chemical fertilisers and sprays prices are escalating out of sight.

Compound this with transport costs and we shall see many food lines slipping out of the reach of most people on a tighter budget.

We all need to become more self-sufficient and look after our own health by growing and eating good wholesome fruit and vegetables which is home grown.

Garden centre owners have reported fantastic increases in the sale of vegetable seeds and plants along with fruit trees and herbs.

You do not even need a garden to grow vegetables and fruit trees as you can grow lots of things in containers.

I have written about this before and by using pots, buckets, polystyrene boxes and plastic rubbish tins (these are for fruit trees).

For instance you all know about growing a spud in a bucket.

To grow in containers all you need to do is purchase a few bags of compost, some sheep manure pellets, maybe a bag of blood & bone and add these to the compost and plant up seeds or seedlings.

You can increase the goodness of

the food by adding mineral rich products such as Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) and Ocean Solids.

You don’t even have to use a lot of the sheep manure pellets, blood & bone and Ocean Solid as a little placed in the planting hole will do nicely.

After which you can spray the foliage of the plants with t h e M B L t w i c e w e e k l y.

For those that have a nice sunny area where a vegetable garden could be started you don’t even have to do any digging.

Mow down as low as possible any grass or weeds in the area.

Make a surround that is at least 200mm tall (the taller the better.)

If using treated timber cut the wood to the required size and paint all surfaces with acrylic paint giving a couple of coats to seal in the chemicals.

The garden should only be about a metre wide so that you can work from the sides and never have to walk on it.

W hen you r su r round is in place for the raised garden cover the bottom with cardboard or several sheets of newspaper.

Over this throw in grass clippings, food scraps, animal manures, prunings, leaves and anything organic including homemade compost and spent potting mix from old containers..

This will cheaply build up the base of the raised garden.

When you have a layer about half full then sprinkle a good dose of garden lime over the material.

Next layer another lot of wet newspaper and then with purchased compost place over the newspaper.

If you have animal manure such as chicken, cow or horse this can be incorporated into the top layer for extra goodness.

Finish off the top few centimet er s w it h pu rcha se d compost. (This will be weed free) Now you are ready to plant up as suggested with sheep pellets etc.

Corrugated iron with fence posts is ideal for a taller raised garden as the heat from the sun will warm the growing medium and speed up plant growth. A little more expense but well worth it in the long run.

What we have achieved from the above is a weed free garden (at the beginning anyway) with the cardboard or newspaper initially suppressing any weeds from coming through from below.

Worms love newspaper and cardboard so they will be attracted to your raised garden and provide further nutrients and keep the soil open.

With buying seeds look for the cheaper seeds as these are likely to be open pollinated ones which will give you better crops.

The more expensive hybrid seeds are not so good as they have been bred in most cases to grow in a chemical environment.

Some will actually fail in a natural soil.

Labour Weekend is the traditional time to plant up gardens in New Zealand and an ideal time to get started for both new and experienced gardeners (the later would already be well underway).

Arakura school got out the powdered paint and put on a fun afternoon for students running the gauntlet of challenges and getting covered in paint at the same time.

A popular current trend the Rainbow Run involved students lining up in their age

groups and taking on running around the cones, rolling down the hill and crawling under the parachute cover all while being covered with handful’s of paint from local parents assisting in the event.

The powder being used was non toxic and was easy to remove once the fun was over.

Storm surge flattens Penrith The NRL final was a classic cliche of a game of two halves.

The Penrith Panthers were the best team all year, winning 17 in a row on the way to the final, but against the Melbourne Storm on Sunday night, they were simply blown off the park in the first half and eventually fell 26-20 after a spirited but doomed comeback.

Ivan Cleary’s men made too many errors and if they did not have bad luck, they would have had no luck at all.

The contest was also a reminder of that intangible element called

scoreboard pressure.

As Melbourne’s lead stretched to 10 and then 16 in the first half, the men from the Blue Mountains started to push their passes and continued to help dig their own demise.

Nathan Cleary, such a star for Penrith all season, had an absolute Betty Crocker, which included Storm fullback Ryan Papenhuyzen stepping him untouched on his way to a 70m try just after halftime.

It was a limp ending for a team which had been the standard

bearer through this Covid-affected season.

Ultimately, the Storm rode their luck and simply suffocated their less-experienced opponents.

If there is a positive Warriors note in terms of the Panthers season, it’s that Phil Gould, who couldn’t hide his bias throughout the game, was a key architect in creating the squad which was a rebuild job.

Gould will work with the Warriors in 2021.

The Storm are a professional unit.

The Crusaders of rugby, the New England Patriots of American Football.

However, their coach Craig Bellamy’s behavior, kicking items in his coaching box, screaming into his walkie-talkie was a wholly pathetic and immature display from a grown man.

On a side note, the NRL must clean up their vague rules, especially around obstruction.

The Bunker is simply too inconsistent as a video refereeing entity.

The Panthers first try was

clearly an obstruction.

Rugby league is a delightfully simple game often made confusing by video referee decisions.

The slow play the balls from the team protecting a lead late in the game is another blight on the game which needs to be rectified.

Certainly not the tight tussle many were hoping for but it is hard to begrudge the Storm their victory.

They’re clinical and ruthless when the lights are at their brightest.

Several children from Wainuiomata represented their schools in the Hutt Valley Primary Schools and Intermediate Tennis Competition.

This is an annual event which firstly the primary school children compete for selection hosted by the Wainuiomata Tennis Club, from there they play under their association and the winner and runner-up then go on to compete at a regional

level. This year the competition will be played in Palmerston North with Georja Keall, Zoey Kumar and Corbin Matheson representing their schools and the Wainuiomata Tennis Club.

Long time member of the Wainuiomata Tennis Club Elesha Smith takes on a the roll of junior coach for the coming season.

Elesha has been involved with tennis since she was around eightyears-old and is looking forward to help junior members at the club build on their skills.

“One of the great things I found with tennis is you don’t need a whole team to play the game you really only need one other person or you can go and practice hitting against a wall,” Elesha says.

Currently the women’s singles and doubles club champ Elesha started off in the clubs Junior Coaching Programme.

“I have always been a bit competitive and wanted to bet my peers and siblings at things and I found tennis was a great way for me to compete,” she says.

Training with club coach Marc Paulik made all the difference to her game she says and traveling over the hill to meet with other players helped

her build the nessecary skills.

“There were a bunch of different kids that were a lot better than me so I started hitting against them and really started to improve.”

One of the highlights of her playing so far has been a tour to Whanganui playing tournaments and she has had a few good wins.

“When I was 14 my goal was to play prem-one and two seasons ago my team made prem-one and that was definitely a highlight for me,” Elesha says.

“And I also won the women’s open two years ago.”

Communicating with the kids and to be engaging are key to coaching young players she says and being there to help them improve is one of the really rewarding things.

Elesha is currently in year 12 at Sacred Heart College in Lower Hutt and hopes to head off to University after completing year 13.

The club is currently offering teen sessions on Tuesday’s from 6.30 to 7.30 as a way for teens who play a winter code and need to keep their fitness up over summer.
