For decades Clive the chemist has been toiling away in the community going that extra mile to make a difference running one of the two chemist shops in the community.

With the newly developing Countdown Supermarket comes the possibility of a new supermarket chemist and it will have a detrimental effect on both existing pharmacies in the area.

Still the happy chemist Continued from page 1 Resent research into the increase around the country shows funding restraints and competition from big brand retailers in the pharmacy market is leading to the slow demise of independent pharmacies in New Zealand.

And Clive fears the two Wainuiomata long serving businesses will be affected.

It’s not just the effect on his businesses he worries about but the effect it will have on his ability to do the extra things that make a difference.

“We sort out prescriptions that have errors in them because we know the person. We do free deliveries and during Covid we were doing 200 free deliveres a day and we have a really good relationship with our two local medical centres,” Clive says.

“We play a vital role in primary health care and it’s getting more the case and what really worries me is the lack of community connection that could occur.”

A common practice with supermarket pharmacies is to discount their prescriptions

until the local competition is gone and then the price goes up.

They do this by paying the five dollar government surcharge out of their own fund.

A recently opened Countdown Pharmacy in Tauranga just this month announced they would offer free prescriptions.

“What they are doing is paying the five dollar fee out of their own coffers and from what I have read the sole reason for doing this is to increase foot traffic into the supermarket,” Clive says.

“We don’t need another phar-

macy here between the two that are here. I think we provide a good service and the DHB up to this point has given us really good support and are pleased with the work we are doing.”

For 36 years Clive ‘s business has been part of the fabric of the community, he graduated from university with his degree in 1986 and came to work in Wainuiomata, his first job.

Only intending to stay 12 months Clive enjoyed being part of the community so much he decided to stay and has been in Wainuiomata for 36 years.

Community led solution

The Open Polytechnic and Te Kura attended the last community led meeting around providing greater opportunities for youth in Wainuiomata.

They have agreed to part of shaping online content that young people in the community can design themselves and be involved in a Wainuiomata focused course.

MP for Hutt South Ginny Andersen has attended the meetings in support of the community and says The Open Polytechnic has already made contact with some of the parents and some of the parents in the community are now getting behind it and finding out what sort of courses are available.

“Te Kura are probably more inline with kids that aren’t currently in education and they can help get some learning and structure back in place to assist them getting back into school.”

The idea is the youth of Wainuiomata can help design their own pathway back to education.

“We have got local community sports heroes and other people who want to step up and it is a platform for people and young kids to design their own content and shape that in a way that they can learn about where they are growing up, feel proud of their community,” she says.

Three meetings have taken place already while the community comes together and gets to grips

with solutions to help the youth and people in Wainuiomata.

“They have been looking at opportunities and this one came up and it looks like one that has got some legs on it,” Ginny says.

“It has been a really disruptive year with Covid and I think schooling has been disrupted particularly with lock- down and there have been some problems with getting students back into the regular rhythm of back to school, so we are working alongside the high school, community providers, the police and the ministry of education to come up with some good opportunities to make sure our young people are given the support they need.”

The Correspondence School, is a national school that provides distance learning programmes for students from early childhood to Year 13. Te Kura has almost 27,000 students enrolled during any one year, including adult students.

Public consultation for street name With the new road through the upgraded Wainuiomata Supermarket nearing completion next year a new name for the heart of Wainuiomata is being asked for.

Right in the heart of the community it is intended to have a name that represents the heart beat of the community as it will be for future generations.

The Hutt City Council is wanting ideas from the community for a potential name of the new road between The Strand and Queen Street.

The new name may acknowledge our community’s rich history, or draw attention to our natural unique environment or someone who has contributed meaningfully to Wainuiomata (but can’t be a living person).

Lower Hutt City mayor Campbell Barry says street naming has been highlighted recently in Wainuiomata as a way for us to celebrate our diversity and reflect our history fairly.

“This street is going to be around for many generations, so

I urge those who are interested in naming this street to take some time, and really think about who or what is worth acknowledging in our suburb’s rich history,” he says.

Wainuiomata Ward councilor Keri Brown says it is rare that the community gets to have such wide input in the initial stages of naming a street, especially one as significant as this.

Climate change already affecting region Our region is already seeing higher chances of droughts, wildfires, floods and sea level rises, all of which threaten our communities, infrastructure and natural resources - signals a new report released by the Ministry for the Environment (MfE) and StatsNZ. ‘Our atmosphere and climate 2020’ report highlights that we are experiencing climate change right now, with the Wairarapa to face the brunt of the negative environmental and social effects if we don’t act now.

Greater Wellington senior climate scientist, Dr. Alex Pezza, says “The report stresses that a small window of time remains to act, we need to act urgently to make the necessary carbon emission reductions to avoid the severe impacts of a world that is two degrees hotter than today.”

“It shows the atmospheric temper-

ature in New Zealand has increased by about 1.1 degrees celsius over the last 111 years. This compares to about 0.8 degrees increase in the Wellington region, according to Greater Wellington’s monitoring, which is slightly moderated by the cooling effects of channelled winds from the Cook Strait and the Tararua Ranges,” says Dr. Pezza.

One of the fastest increases in annual average maximum temperatures occurred in Masterton, which also gained a week’s extra hot days per decade, placing the Wairarapa as a national hot spot for ‘daytime heat spikes’.

For Wellington city, minimum temperatures are increasing faster.

For rainfall, the report highlights some opposing changes between regions, with likely winter decreases in Wellington and spring increases in Masterton since 1960.

“Rainfall has a very high natural fluctuation, so a longer record of data will help us better understand how the changes are playing out for different areas,” says Dr. Pezza.

The report shows increases in drought intensity and frequency, and that the oceans around New Zealand are also warming, with areas to the east of the Wairarapa coast being a hotspot.

Models also project an increase in strong El Niños, which could result in more severe droughts for the Wairarapa in the future.

Greater Wellington councillor and climate committee chair, Thomas Nash says climate change risks particularly impact maori and mana whenua. Places of special significance to iwi are at risk from flooding and sea level rise and taonga species face increased risk of extinction.

Vanuatu I have friends who have been there and they say it is beautiful and a better place to go than Fiji.

Discussing Wainuiomata water A meeting is to be held to discuss the future of Wainuiomata Water.

Water is precious and the meeting has been called to help shape a better future.

The Whaitua Te Whanganuia-Tara Committee is a group of residents, mana whenua, and councillors from across Hutt Valley and Wellington city.

They are tasked with providing recommendations about the future of water to Greater

Wellington Regional Council, and they want to ensure these recommendations reflect the communities values and priorities.

They will talk about bacteria, sediment, the state of the water pipes, securing future water supply and solutions to restore waterways.

Gardening woes: By Wally Richards Here we are at the end of November with Christmas just around the corner and the longest day well within our sights. All I can say it has been one of the lousiest Springs I have gardened in.

Preferred summer plants such as cucumbers, capsicums and chili have not prospered at all (old saying which means they have not done much good at all). Even tomato plants which are much more hardy have floundered and grown less than I would have expected for the time they have been in.

Cucumbers: I grow the delightful Cucumber Iznik Mini F1 Hybrid in a glasshouse using the AutoPot system and I have not even bothered to plant the seeds yet. I will do soon as the weather is starting to settle a bit but temperatures are still not constant which means heat loving plants suffer.

Too many chilly days and nights mixed with some nice hot sunny days is not suitable for sub tropic and tropical type plants.

Hardy plants are growing great as they don’t mind temperature fluctuations and they are enjoying the increasing light hours to gather more energy from the sunlight.

There are good years and poor years and we just garden on, taking the good with the bad. The sad part is when new gardeners don’t have good results straight off, then they can lose heart and put it down to not having green fingers. If it helps dip two fingers into a green dye and after which you then have green fingers so you can soldier on. (If you believe it then you will suddenly achieve great success with your gardening efforts.

One thing that will help make a significant difference is to use Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) as a foliage spray every two weeks on all your preferred plants such as vegetables, fruit and roses and any other plants you wish to have good results from.

Made up in water you can leave in the sprayer as it will not go off what you have not used, just give the sprayer a shake before reusing. MBL is derived from when the plant was CO2 rich and mineral rich extracted from the fossil vegetation of those times. You can add Mycorrcin to the MBL as it contains molasses which gives the plants a bit of free energy and makes some less susceptible to pests.

On the other hand you can take Black

Black Strap Molasses can be useful on nectarines or peaches that have had a bad dose of curly leaf disease.

Strap Molasses at a couple of table spoons to a couple of litres of hot water to dissolve. When it cools down spray over the foliage of any plants you want to give a boost to. This can be useful on your nectaries or peaches that have had a bad dose of curly leaf disease and has affected much of the leaves.

These leaves later will fall off and be replaced with new leaves after the time has passed for the disease to strike.

The damaged leaves are not going to produce sufficient carbohydrates from the sun so some or your entire crop will drop through lack of energy. A two weekly spray of the molasses may help save some of your crop.

Likewise if you have garlic growing and the leaves have the rust disease then they will not perform so well to gather energy to make nice big garlic bulbs. Your 2-3 times a week spray of molasses with MBL added may allow the bulbs to grow bigger and so you will have some bigger cloves to

harvest hopefully. Strawberries should be doing well now and a weekly spray of Mycorrcin will not only feed them but will increase the size of the berries and have a longer harvesting season.

If you find either dry berry (Downy mildew) or strawberries rotting (Botrytis cinerea) then spray the plants with Perkfection and repeat a month later at the lessor rate. Perkection will also help to maintain healthy roses and other plants.

Very good for prevention of Botrytis cinerea on your bunches of grapes. You can cure Buxus disease with it as long as the plants have not gone beyond the point of no return. Perkfection can also control or prevent Silver Leaf disease in stone fruit and roses as long as the disease has not progressed too far. More information on water metering essential Greater Wellington Regional Council supports the decision by the Wellington Water Committee to seek further refinement and costs on the case for installing residential water meters to help reduce water consumption throughout the region.

Following consideration of the Economic Case for Providing Residential Water Consumption Information report the committee agreed that Wellington Water Limited should commission a detailed business case on how residential water metering could be used to monitor regional consumption, which is among the highest in the country.

Greater Wellington Chair Daran Ponter said the introduction of

residential water metering is a must if the region is to avoid a bill for multi-million dollar investment in new water sources.

According to a forecast in the Sustainable Water Supply Target and Policy report, the Wellington region will need to find a new water source before 2040 and by 2026 if demand and projected population growth continue at the current rate.

“Demand management is fundamental to maintaining a sustainable supply, and meters make sense.

“By delivering vital information on personal consumption they will put control in the hands of consumers. They will drive changes to behaviour that will reduce consumption, take pressure off the

region’s ageing water infrastructure and avoid the need to invest millions in dams or other water sources.”

Water meters would also play a key role in identifying leaks throughout the pipe distribution system, which accounts for between 6-31 per cent of water consumed, a huge volume of potentially tens of millions of litres per day.

“Data on the location of leaks is essential to cost-effective repair and maintenance within a complex distribution system,” says Cr Ponter.

“We don’t have a good picture of where the leaking is occurring.

“Without metering, we’re blind to the scale of the problem, and that can’t continue.”

The win does allow Foster and Cane a summer of silence when it comes to criticism, however, the starting XV has many questions remaining.

The front row, the needed return of lock Brodie Retallick, blindside flanker, No 8, first five, the midfield, right wing and fullback all have question marks worth pondering over the summer months.

To offer a few solutions, I’d have Akira Ioane at No 6 and Ardie Savea at No 8.

Hoskins Sotutu is a talent off the

back of the scrum but Savea is experienced and is a dynamic ball carrier.

I’d have Beauden Barrett at 10 and Will Jordan at 15.

Barrett is a wasted talent out the back and he now has a Japanese sabbatical to play.

Jordan is x-factor and yes, he could go on the right wing but why not play him in his preferred position as novel of an idea as that is in 2020.

That puts Richie Mo’unga on the bench and that’s just how it goes.

Now, second five and the right winger spot are the two most up-for-

grabs spots.

Jack Goodhue just does not cut it out of position at 12 and Anton LienertBrown is the best centre in the country.

Equally right wing is likely to remain with Jordie Barrett or given to Jordan as I don’t expect Foster to go away from Mo’unga at 10 and Beauden Barrett at 15, even though he probably should.

Goodhue and Jordie Barrett’s spots are anything but safe and I’m sure the powers that be will be looking for a new option to emerge, especially in the 12 jersey.

The Slamdemic main event event saw well-known Niwa pitted against the man mountain Adam Avalanche who weighed in at 200 kilo’s, the biggest wrestler in the New Zealand history of wrestling.

Following on from the Saturday night show the team at Valiant Pro intend to hold a smaller more intimate show at their wrestling Gym in Gracefield with limited tickets for the January 16, 2021 event.
