Leading the group is Tracey Mansfield, a fifteen year veteran of the patrol and she does it all because she wants to.

“Volunteering is my thing and the great thing about it is you don’t have to do it, you do it because you want to,” Tracy says.

She says she has put in oodles of hours over the years but it is all for the love of the community.

Operating in teams of two the patrols five teams are the eyes and ears for the police and are connected to the Hutt via radio with the main focus on patrol being prevention.

“We are just the eyes and ears and there’s no jumping out of the car being Rambo,” Tracy says.

“I love engaging with the youth of Wainuiomata. That’s my thing and if I see a drunk on the side of the road I am allowed to take them home if I feel safe as long as I log it and it is all kosha.”

There has been an improvement in the community over the last fifteen years she says and the patrols have a radio connected to the street cameras in the Hutt which are monitored.

“Help is not far away if we need it. If we put the call out the police are there straight away.”

“We are thin on the ground and we do need some help,” Tracy says.

Safety is also a big part of the

job and the only time patrollers would get out of the car she says is if someone was running around bleeding to death and it was safe to get out.

The teams carry a defibrillator and are all first aid trained.

Added to this they get involved in search and rescue and civil

defence.

Other duties include the events like the Christmas Parade and ANZAC Day. For Tracy the patrols aren’t the only gig, she is a caregiver and does accounts for a business and still manages to put 100 percent in to the patrols.

Antenatal classes expanded to Wainuiomata Leading antenatal education organisation, Parents Centre Aotearoa has been contracted by the Hutt Valley DHB to provide additional antenatal classes in the Hutt valley, including Naenae and Wainuiomata.

“We are very excited to be offering classes in these new areas,” Parent Education Manager, Liz Pearce says.

“We have been providing classes in Upper Hutt and Lower Hutt for many years and are very thrilled to be able to serve more wh nau in the Hutt Valley.”

“Our new classes are free for those with a Community Services Card in Upper Hutt and Wainuiomata and are free to everyone who enrols in the Naenae classes.” The Hutt DHB contract allows us to extend our services to meet the needs of those parents who may find it hard to access antenatal classes for reasons of cost or access.”

An added bonus is nappy supplier Huggies© are supporting their new classes by providing a Huggies New born Jumbo box for the first 12 people to sign up to classes in Naenae and Wainuiomata.

Parents Centre Aotearoa started in Wellington 70 years ago, to provide information and connection to new parents about to undergo the birth of their babies. At that time, mothers had little control over how they gave birth to their babies, often given anaesthetic against their will. Babies were taken away to a nursery and brought out every four hours for feeding and rooming-in was not encouraged. Successful lobbying by Parents Centres changed that in the 1950s and 1960s.

Today, Parents Centre provides antenatal and postnatal education in over 60 locations across New Zealand. It is best known for its evidence-based information delivered in a fun, informative and interactive way, and for its coffee groups, connecting parents for mutual support after babies are born.

School lunches celebrated Two years on from the launch of lunches in schools 47 million lunches have been supplied and last week Konini School, Wainuiomata, celebrated with a visit from Hutt South Labour MP Ginny Andersen.

Konini School principal Andrea Scanlan says the schools lunch provider Eat My Lunch has been great to deal with and the lunches have made a big difference taking the pressure of parents.

“We know each day what the menu is going to be and we tell the

kids what it is and the other day they clapped when it was chicken tenderloins and there are some lunches that are more successful than others.”

“They are a great provider and they listen to concerns if we have them,” Andrea says.

“It is a quality lunch too, they get fruit and they get snacks and good amounts of the right things.”

The school has a planned time for the kids to sit down and eat their lunches Andrea says they wash their hands and prepare the

food and wait for one another and there is a karakia before eating.

“We always encourage them to try the lunches and if they know there is a piece of fruit they don’t like they can pop it in the class fruit bowl and someone else might like it and we have a composting system going and some has to go in our bin to help minimize the waste,” Andrea says.

For Ginny the launch of Ka Ora, Ka Ako Healthy School Lunches programme is one of the many

successful initiatives under way.

“It is two years since we launched the Ka Ora, Ka Ako Healthy School Lunches programme, because we know that kids learn better when they don’t have an empty stomach,” Ginny says.

“So far more than 211,000 students have benefited from 47 million lunches and providing a daily nutritious lunch is one way to ensure Kiwi kids don’t miss out on learning, while also helping to ease pressure off wh nau.”

Free parenting program Triple P is giving Kiwi wh nau free access to practical and easyto-use resources for building children’s emotional resilience throughout the pandemic and beyond, thanks to funding from the Ministry of Health and support from Wh raurau as part of the COVID-19 response. Included in the options is the latest Fear-Less Triple P Online - a programme specifically designed to help children and young people get on top of anxiety.

“The Triple P suite of online programmes – Triple P Online, Teen Triple P Online, and Fear-Less Triple P Online - provide expert advice and strategies for parents and carers,” Ms Riach said.

“Now more than ever, parents,

carers, children, and young people, are living with increased levels of anxiety and stress due to the pandemic, with 2020/2021 data revealing that almost six per cent of Kiwi children aged 2 to 14 years, experienced emotional or behavioural problems, including diagnosed depression, anxiety disorders, and ADHD,” she says.

The Ministry of Health’s Manager of Primary and Community Wellbeing, Jo Chiplin, says the free online programmes will provide parents and wh nau with the tools and confidence they need to support their children’s wellbeing in these times of uncertainty. The skills that children learn through this programme will be of benefit now and later in life.

Protect at risk communities Border changes announced today underscores the need for the Government to step-up protections for the most at-risk communities.

“Our pandemic story is one of collective action, of coming together for the good of everyone, of manaakitanga,”Green Party’s Dr Elizabeth Kerekere, COVID-19 Response spokesperson says.

“Thousands of border workers, workers in MIQ, and our health staff have put it all on the line to keep us safe for the last two years, and we thank them for that.

“As the focus shifts to self-care of COVID at home, the Government must urgently step up protections for our most at-risk communities, especially for young Māori, Pasifika, disabled and immunocompromised people,” she says.

“The Government must make N95 masks, or equivalent, free and easily accessible, and ensure community health providers have the resources to get masks to those who need them most.”

“Bringing this forward is a victory for common sense, considering there are now so many Omicron-infected people in the community.

Lower Hutt Mayor Campbell Barry has announced his decision to seek a second term as Mayor at the local body election in October this year.

“It has been the privilege of my life serving the people of Lower Hutt as Mayor over the past two and a half years. Every day I am reminded of how fortunate I am to lead the city where I was raised, and where my wife and I have put down our roots,” Campbell says.

“When I stood for Mayor back in 2019 I said I would lead a bold and ambitious Council that would front up to the biggest challenges we face as a city. Despite having to also deal with the impacts of COVID-19, I’m incredibly proud of the significant progress we’ve made, and continue to make, together.

“We’ve doubled our investment in core infrastructure, and been upfront with people about the state and cost of upgrading our three waters network.

“We’ve got the rebuild of Naenae Pool underway and on track, and also secured a significant investment from the government in the project.

“We completely overhauled our rubbish and recycling service, so all residents can access a modern three bin system that other cities had enjoyed successfully for decades.

“And we’ve secured funding, and got the green light to progress with transformational projects like Tupua Horo Nuku (Eastern Bays Shared Pathway) and RiverLink, while also putting our city on a sustainable path forward to reduce emissions and combat climate change.

He says there is still more to do to ensure Lower Hutt fronts up to the challenges ahead.

“Without necessary investment in our transport and water infrastructure in particular, our city risks choking on its own growth. We need to look proudly to the future, and continue to make decisions our children and grandchildren will thank us for.”

Campbell says he remains focused on the job at hand through until October.

“My number one priority right now as Mayor is leading our city through the coming months, delivering on the things we said we would do, and supporting our people and businesses as we all deal with the disruption and fallout from COVID-19 spreading widely in our communities.

Plenty on offer in new space By: Gerald Rillstone With a move to a larger space the Wainuiomata Koha Shed has plenty on offer.

The Koha Shed’s Jo Bryant says the new space has given them the opportunity to spread out and put items on display with room walk around.

“It is fab and I am ecstatic with the new space,” she says.

Jo has done a video online showing where the new location is at the old Wainuiomata College grounds.

“It does get really busy and our very first day here we had 84 customers come in and

we were absolutely slammed,” Jo says.

“It is lovely to see the regulars coming in and finding something they need but we are also getting people from outside the area, I had a lady who bused in from Karori, and others from Porirua and Upper Hutt.”

She says she expects numbers to continue to be high as there are a lot of people out of work.

“Food prices have gone up and people are struggling even those with jobs,” Jo says.

“At the moment we need blankets and towels which are necessary when heading into autumn,” she says.

Toys for the kids are always in demand.

Hats and shirts top off a great selection of used clothing.

A great range of women’s tops and dresses.

There are books galore on offer.

inbrief news Accessible shuttle at train station As a result of the ongoing protest at Parliament, Metlink will run a free shuttle service for customers with accessibility needs between the Wellington Railway Station and temporary bus stops in the CBD. The stops on Lambton Quay and Brandon Street were set up after the protest forced Metlink to close the Lambton bus interchange, which is adjacent to the station.

The wheelchair accessible shuttle will run approximately every 20 minutes between Platform 10 at the station and the temporary stops.

Metlink general manager Scott Gallacher said the clearly marked shuttle would connect passengers with regular services.

Sorensen shirt set for second auction

When Darcel Jansen from Wainuiomata’s Pataka decided to auction a signed shirt from softball great Mark Sorenson she had no idea the piece of memorabilia would create such a stir and such generosity.

The auction raised over $1,500 and the winning bidder then donated the shirt back so that it could be auctioned a second time.

Darcel says it all started with a $50 bid online and soon jumped up to $500 with a bid from Wainuiomata stalwart and speaker of the house Trevor Mallard who

promptly donated the money to the Pataka so the auction could continue.

This was followed by another donation of $400 and then ex local Steve Grace who is based in Brisbane came in with a bid of $670.

Darcel says Steve contacted her and donated the shirt back to be auctioned again making the final total from the shirt $1,570.

“Steve is an ex local. He played softball with Mark and really wanted to support us,” Darcel says.

Steve is also the CEO of Bella Stayz in Australia which leases

and rents luxury accommodation.

Mark captained the national side from 1989 to 2001, and again in 2004, and led them to three successive ISF world championship wins, in 1996, 2000, and 2004.

He was the first Black Sox player to win four world championship gold medals after he had earlier won a world title with the Junior Black Sox. A catcher, he played about two hundred matches for New Zealand, including seventy in world championships.

Among the many peaks of a glittering career was one of softball’s rarest feats, a perfect game in

conjunction with pitcher Michael White in the 1996 world final against Canada.

He retired in 2007.

The number two on the Mark Sorenson shirt was retired when Mark retired from the team.

In the 1998 New Year Honours, Sorenson was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to softball and the community. In 2010, he was inducted into the International Softball Congress Hall of Fame.

He was inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame at the 2016 Halberg Awards.

The hashtags #CashStuffing and #100EnvelopeChallenge on Tik Tok, Youtube, Instagram and Facebook feature students, young parents and influencers explaining how they use cash to set a budget and save for specific goals. #cashstuffing means using physical cash kept in labelled envelopes or folders for planning spending and saving. Envelopes are labelled ‘groceries,’ ‘bills,’ ‘splurge,’ ‘clothes,’ ‘transport,’ ‘savings,’ and the like.

Each payday the envelopes are filled with the specific budget for that period.

If the person follows the challenge correctly and saves each day they will have $5050 after 100 days, a little over three months.

s 3 cups chicken pieces, cooked, cubed s 250g mushrooms, sliced s 3 spring onions, chopped s 500g spiral pasta s 420g canned cream of chicken soup s 250ml water s 2 cups cheddar cheese, grated s 1/2 tsp mixed herbs s 1 pinch seasoning *to taste Serve with a green salad.

1. Place pasta in microwave bowl, just cover with hot water, cook approximately 10 minutes until bite tender.

Drain well.

Grease a 30 x 24 x 6cm dish or bain-marie pan.

3. In the dish, place pasta, chicken, mushrooms, spring

onions, chicken soup mixed with the water, finely chopped fresh herbs and 1 cup grated cheese. Add salt and pepper, if using.

4. Mix all together until combined.

5. Sprinkle over remaining cup of grated cheese.

6. Bake at 180C for approximately 30 minutes or until cheese topping is melted and browned.

Whanau Manaaki Kindergartens When the wellbeing and safety of hundreds of children attending kindergartens throughout Te Whanganui-aTara and the Greater Wellington region is paramount, so too must a teacher’s attention to detail.

Recording every incident and accident in a book to ensure health and safety measures were being met may have seemed a practical and simple method a decade ago.

But as the roll of kindergartens and the number of children grew, the volume of events increased and so too the time it took teachers to keep an accurate record. Inevitably, accidents were missed.

Whanau Manaaki Kindergartens Executive Assistant, Lorraine Coulston, recognised that the outdated paperbased recording system required a 21st century solution.

“As you can imagine, with kindergarten children, you have a lot of incidents and accidents. So, the paper system

wasn’t user-friendly, it had to be faxed to head office, and made it impossible for staff to review patterns and identify resolutions.

“It’s hard to make health and safety really appealing. But it quickly dawned on me that moving the system online was going to make life easier for our teachers and, more importantly, foster a safer environment for our children.”

Whanau Manaaki Kindergartens engaged health and safety company Working Wise to implement their GOSH system, allowing teachers throughout the region to quickly and accurately record every incident.

Each kindergarten received an iPad loaded with the incident and event reporting system, tailored with preprepared options.

Incidents were emailed to parents, and depending on the severity, staff phoned ahead of time so as not to alarm them of the incident via email.

It may seem contra to what Whanau Manaaki Kindergartens was trying to achieve, but the number of incidents skyrocketed and this was seen as a positive outcome – a perfect example of incidents previously slipping

through the cracks now being captured by the new system.

Records are now accurate and accessible 24/7, which in turn informs better practice procedures while ensuring staff finally have ownership over their site’s health

RTS impressive in Blues debut Roger Tuivasa-Sheck could have been forgiven for thinking he still played for the Warriors after his new team the Blues choked away their Super Rugby match 33-32 under the roof in Dunedin.

New Zealand rugby’s latest million dollar man, Tuivasa-Sheck, made a promising start to his 15-man career all the same on Saturday night.

The cynic in me believes RTS is

all but assured an All Blacks jersey this season but he looked promising playing at second five-eighth in the encounter where the Blues snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

The 28-year-old had five offloads in the opening 12 minutes and did not shirk his defensive duties in a display that must have made the New Zealand Rugby Union big wigs smile.

RTS will have more stern chal-

lenges at the Super Rugby level in the coming weeks.

With coaches like Leon MacDonald and Joe Schmidt, I’m sure the former Warriors captain will learn quickly.

He also has a chance to bolster the depth of the All Blacks midfield which is an area that looks a little thin at present.

RTS had shades of Sonny Bill Williams but perhaps has the

chance to be more polished but less physically destructive.

RTS has the finesse in his game to be an attacking weapon with the ball in hand as well as a distributor.

His defence was always excellent while playing fullback in rugby league and that should serve him well in the high-traffic area of the midfield.

He is far from a finished product but the early signs were promising

for a smooth transition.

I’d also be remiss not to mention the passing of Inga the Winger who was before my time and Joeli Vidiri.

I saw plenty of Vidiri growing up as he was instrumental in that lethal Blues backline in the opening three seasons of Super Rugby from 1996 to 1998.

A shame when two great players die so young.

Scoot takes Honda to the top

Fresh from racing at the Waikato Motocross Championships a week ago, Oparau’s James Scott jumped off his trusty Honda CRF250 motocross bike and wheeled out one of the innovative Honda CRF450RX enduro bikes to race the opening round of the New Zealand Cross-country Championships near Marton on Sunday, and what a sight that was.

The 20-year-old led Sunday’s gruelling three-hour senior race virtually from start to finish, eclipsing Wairoa’s defending national cross-country champion Tommy Watts and last year’s junior cross-country champion Wil Yeoman, from Taupo, in the

six-lap affair.

Scott took the chequered flag by just over a minute ahead of Watts and he finished two minutes ahead of third-placed rider Yeoman.

Although the insanely-talented Scott has dabbled in other motorcycling codes – including a brief stint last year racing the World Enduro Championships in Europe – he is more at home on a motocross track, but such is the versatility of the Honda man and his bike, that he made the transition look ridiculously easy on Sunday.

“It was good to get into the lead early because I knew it was going to get dusty. My plan was just to keep it steady at the start of the race and then maybe pick up the

pace at the end,” he said.

“I could see Tommy (Watts) reeling me in at one stage, so I just lifted the pace to respond to that.

We were only five seconds apart at one point, but I finished the race a minute in front.

“This bike has a bigger tank than my motocross bike, but I could

still only do two laps today before I needed to refuel. Thankfully, it was the same for my rivals too,” Scott explained.

“The bike is stock standard, with no modifications, so I was pretty pleased with how it all worked out really. I might just stiffen up the suspension settings before the

next round though. It was a bit too soft today.

The next two rounds follow closely together, with round two set for farmland near Pahiatua on Saturday, April 16, and round three near Dannevirke just two days later, on Easter Monday, April

Supplements containing prohibited substances Six sports supplements containing illegal drugs were recently discovered for sale in a number of supplement stores in Aotearoa New Zealand thanks to an investigation by Consumer NZ. The contaminated supplements were found to contain drugs, including amphetamine-like stimulants to Parkinsons and ADHD medications. In addition to being illegal, three of the substances are prohibited in sport.

“Although it seems unthinkable that illegal drugs could make their way into supplements for general sale, we’re unsurprised at the findings of this investigation and commend Consumer NZ for their work,” Drug Free Sport New Zealand (DFSNZ) Chief Executive Nick Paterson says.

“Our message is clear, sup-

plements are a threat to clean athletes. We advise anyone who plays sport at any level to think carefully before taking supplements. You’re bound by your sport’s anti-doping rules, and one dodgy supplement could leave you with a ban from all sport.”

Mr Paterson was also concerned about the target market for some of these problems, which reflects the growing popularity of supplements among our rangatahi.

“It’s deeply concerning that some of these supplements look like something a well-meaning parent could buy to support their teen during exam season.”

“Our advice to anyone supporting a young athlete is to avoid supplements. A food first approach to nutrition can give

rangatahi everything they need to train hard and recover safely.”

This investigation also gives credence to a 2016 Australian study, which found that 1 in 5 supplements contained substances that are prohibited in sport and unlisted on the label.

Poor manufacturing practices and inadequate labelling and regulation mean that you can never be 100% sure what’s inside a supplement. Now there’s proof that the situation here in Aotearoa New Zealand is no different.

Athletes take supplements at their own risk and are 100% responsible for what they put in their body. Any athletes considering supplements should first check out DFSNZ’s Supplement Decision Making Guide at drugfreesport.org.nz/good-decisions.
