New era in Karori

Karori will have a new facility by early 2023 - Te Korǀria which means ‘The Glory’.

The building has been in the planning and development stage since 2012 when earthquakes first made their existing hall space unusable.

Te Korǀria will provide counselling services from purpose-designed rooms in partnership with Mind Health.

Community focus for new space in Karori Continued from page 1.

There will be a soft play area inside the building for kids aged under 11, it will be selfcontained and offer multiple levels of play while caregivers can watch from a cafe space.

This project will address the earthquake risk of the Old Parish Hall.

Karori Anglican Church project manager, Kate HarveyGreen says she hoped the facility would serve Karori for at least the next 100 years and solidify the church as part of the community for generations to come.

“The whole idea is for a community space for all ages and for people to enjoy, we have a long history of serving whƗnau and want to further meet their needs.”

“They’ll be a soft space for kids to play but also a chance for parents and caregivers to connect over a coffee while they watch.

“We also see mental health as an ongoing issue and we want to dedicate some space to supporting that, we’ll have two purpose-built counselling rooms” Kate says.

Stu’s career celebrated

Long serving local community policeman Stu Rowe was celebrated by the community for his 30 years service in the region with a presentation of an engraved key and a gathering of locals.

Originally from Hawarden in Canterbury Stu, on leaving school trained as a builder with his first introduction to policing was through his late policeman brother Greg who took him out on the beat in Wellington.

Sadly Greg died in an accident on the Lady Elizabeth on the first of April in 1978. That same year Stu was made redundant from the building firm and the year he graduated from the police college in Trentham and hit the beat at 22 years old and the adventure of 42 years began.

Stu was posted to Wellington city on section and worked in

surveillance in various squads until he transferred to the intel team.

In November 1994 he transferred to Johnsonville community police centre later taking on the role as community constable a job he stayed in for the next 22 years.

Stu also took on other assignments during his time in Johnsonville and traveled to East Timor with a UN team and later to Bougainvillea as an advisor.

Stu says he had his doubts about moving into the role of community policing, living and working in the same area.

“There is a plus and minus equation in that stream as to how well your career will go and how well your life will go,” he says.

“I took the gamble and that was the best decision I made because with my family growing up I grew up with the community and

After more than three years of construction at Churton Park School with new buildings being built and refurbished the playground is also completed and ready for the students to enjoy.

Principal Matt Stanley says the old playground was over 30 years old and had come to the end of its useful life and was no longer safe.

“The poor kids have been putting up with this construction work and for some of them this is the first year in their time at school we haven’t had a construction crew,” Matt says.

The school was given a special grant from the government and it was used to build the

new playground.

“The community has been waiting a long time and the students and the student council in 2020 helped design it,” he says.

“It is pretty cool to have a new playground since we haven’t had one for a very long time,” student Zoe Pye says.

Student Florence Watson – Black is also pleased with the finished and says the previous student council did a great job of helping with the design.

Internationally renowned New Zealander appointed NZSO Artistic Advisor and Principal Conductor Former Samuel Marsden Collegiate student Gemma New, in demand by orchestras around the world, has been appointed Artistic Advisor and Principal Conductor of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra Te Tira P oro o Aotearoa.

Her title takes immediate effect with the start of the 2022 season and lasts for three years, through the 2024 season.

Gemma, 35, hailed as a rising star in North America and Europe, is Music Director of Canada’s Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra.

Last year she was profiled in The New York Times as one of a select group of conductors to watch.

She made her NZSO debut in 2020 to critical acclaim. The New Zealand Herald said the audience were on the edge of their seats, captivated by her “exquisitely finessed” conducting.

When New returned in 2021 for several NZSO concerts, including Matariki, The Dominion Post declared: “New’s conducting was again magnificent, her dynamic and rhythmic control immaculate and even the warmest, most indulgent moments shaped with absolute clarity.”

As a senior member of the NZSO’s artistic team, New will conduct a wide range of programmes with the Orchestra, perform in several New Zealand centres, advise closely on the direction of programming, projects, collaborations and contribute to other artistic matters for the Orchestra.

She joins NZSO Principal Conductor-in-Residence Hamish McKeich, Honorary Conduc-

tor Pietari Inkinen and Music Director Emeritus James Judd in furthering the NZSO’s artistic excellence and reaching new audiences.

“It has been a joy to collaborate with the NZSO these past few seasons, and I am thrilled to be joining this exceptional team that so valuably contributes to the vibrant music scene in Aotearoa, New Zealand,” Gemma says.

“During each and every programme we have performed together, I have been deeply impressed and inspired by the excellence, passion, dedication and inventiveness of the musicians and staff, and uplifted by the audience’s enthusiastic reception of our performances.

“I look forward to working with the NZSO in this new role and celebrating new heights together.”

NZSO Chief Executive Peter Biggs says New’s appointment is a coup for both the Orchestra, which celebrates its 75th anniversary in 2022, and Aotearoa New Zealand.

“As a conductor Gemma New is astonishing, which is why she is in such demand around the world. We’re delighted that, even with her many international commitments, Gemma is determined to take up this exciting new role with the NZSO. Her knowledge and experience with some of the world’s best orchestras, along with her close ties with New Zealand orchestras, makes her invaluable in her new role with the NZSO. “Gemma will mesmerise audiences in concert with the Orchestra and make a significant contribution to what we play and do over the next three years.

Over 2020 and 2021 New conducted seven programmes with the NZSO, which included some of the greatest works of the classical canon: Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, Shostakovich’s Leningrad Symphony and Handel’s Messiah. She also conducted works by New Zealand composers Gareth Farr, Maria Grenfell, Ihlara McIndoe, Anthony Ritchie and Robin Toan, and also recorded with the NZSO performances of Ravel’s La mère I’Oye and Elgar’s Serenade for Strings.

In 2022 New conducts in Wellington and Auckland three backto-back concerts with multiGrammy Award-winning American violinist Hilary Hahn as part of the NZSO’s winter festival in August, followed in November by Mozart’s monumental Requiem in a programme also featuring New Zealand composer John Psathas’ Seikilos.

In 2023 she will lead the NZSO in Auckland, Wellington and other centres, including Christchurch, Napier and Tauranga.

Gemma is sought-after by many

leading orchestras around the world. This season she guest conducts WDR Symphonie-Orchestra Köln and the Orchestra National de l’Île de Paris.

Recent guest engagements have included Montreal Symphony and Toronto Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic and Hallé Orchestra, among others.

She is a former Conducting Fellow under the mentorship of Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Music Director Gustavo Dudamel.

This past year New was granted America’s prestigious Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award.

A proud Kiwi, New grew up in Wellington and it was as a member of the NZSO National Youth Orchestra where she had one of her first experiences conducting. “No!” says Sue Brown, Ngaio Union Church’s Minister “The Church has definitely not closed, far from it.

“We’re just out and about, while builders make our building good for the future, with a new kitchen and plenty of toilets.

“We need to do this because our church building is in such high demand since our hall was demolished last year. Nearly every day of the week, the church is buzzing with people coming and going for exercise classes, coffee groups, indoor bowls, lunches, learning groups, mediation, singing groups, recycling collection station and all the rest.

“Speaking of the recycling collection station that we host together with the Ngaio Crofton Downs Residents Association on

the first Saturday of each month,” Sue says.

“The next one will take place this Saturday, outside the Church. Provided the weather’s not too bad.

So what’s next for Ngaio Union Church?

“We expect to be back in the church by Easter Day,” says Sue. “Until then, we’re meeting on Sunday mornings at the Ngaio Band Hall (beside the Ngaio railway station) and at Johnsonville Uniting Church. Then we’ll be back home and looking for more exciting ways to connect our community –talk like TED? cardboard box weddings? Celtic dances? and more. And of course, a service every Sunday at 10am.”

Pizza donation for worthy cause Domino’s Johnsonville recently donated pizzas to Take 10 Arvo’s – a programme part of the Vulnerable Support Charitable Trust, which is a charity organisation committed to supporting tamariki in need by providing food in schools, and a safe and fun space for them to come after class.

Domino’s Johnsonville franchisee Lucky Singh says he was proud to support the community based charity, and to have provided a hot meal for the tamariki to enjoy while at the afternoon youth zone.

“Giving back to the local community is very important to the entire Domino’s Johnsonville team. We sincerely appreciate the work the dedicated volunteers at Take 10 Arvo’s have been doing to provide a safe space for tamariki.

Council prepared for impact of Omicron With the Omicron variant of COVID-19 transmissions increasing around the country, Wellington City Council is prepared for the different ways it may affect its staff, facilities, and services to the city.

Wellingtonians can expect reduced hours, potentially closed facilities, and affected services as staff and contractors may be required to self-isolate, are unwell and recuperating, are redeployed to essential services, or facilities are required to do a deep clean after being identified as a location of interest.

Critical services like waste collections, funeral and crematoria services, and water maintenance will continue to operate but may be reduced in some areas, and most online services and payments will still be available.

The theme was macro photography and Peter’s image is of a Stable fly, he believes. The image is razor sharp and clearly differentiated from the simple uncluttered background. A great image!

It was taken over Christmas while Peter was on holiday at a farm in Johnsonville Camera Club’s Peter Allen captured the Rangitikei District. It was shot this shot of a Stable fly. on a Nikon D7200 with an 18-140 mm lens.

Peter has been a member of the Johnsonville Camera Club since around 2009. His photographic interests are broad, but he particularly enjoys capturing action of all types:sports, birds, animals, boats and planes. The thrill of photographing action is that you are trying to capture an instant that can never be repeated again.

Peter says any camera will do the job and in his view, it is all about opening one’s eyes to seeing more of the world around us.

The Johnsonville Camera Club is a small club that cultivates a friendly family atmosphere and welcomes new members. It meets on the last Wednesday of each month bar December at 7 pm at the Collective Community Hub, 33 Johnsonville Peter Allen.

Statement by Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL) Regarding Russia and Ukraine Russia’s current attack on Ukraine stirs disturbance and tension globally and threatens a peaceful future, which all of humanity must build for future generations.

Military aggression against a sovereign state cannot be a solution to any problem, and the perils of such war and violent conflict hit innocent citizens the hardest, including women, the youth, and children.

Nothing can repay the lost lives, and the direness of being made refugees overnight cannot be consoled with anything but the cessation of hostilities and peace.

As an international peace NGO listed in UN ECOSOC and UN DGC, HWPL joins the UN and the international community in voicing condemnation against actions that cause a global crisis and violate human rights through the act of aggression.

Russia must withdraw its forces back to its country and ensure the safety of the people of Ukraine. Russia must clearly express the will to join talks and efforts to resolve the

current crisis peacefully. At the same time, it must come forward with respect for the principles of international law and manner apt to rectification, with a bearing of peace.

Such a decision will gain the support of the entire global community and become a milestone in the journey of building lasting peace.

HWPL calls on the youth around the world to join the voices calling for peace and the cessation of war. It is for the fellow youth citizens who share the same era with us and are made victims in the violence of war, and it is for the future of the global community.

Furthermore, for the peaceful resolution of the current crisis of Russia and Ukraine, we support and urge swift action of the UN and request all nations to demonstrate their love for humanity by offering help to refugees.

New suburb-to-city routes to get Wellington fit for the future Wellington’s daily low-carbon commute experience is about to get an upgrade, starting with two critical suburb-to-city connections, as the Wellington City Council takes action to prepare for the future.

Improvements to our bus and bike routes will be rolled out over the coming months to make it easier and safer for people to get into the city from Newtown via Adelaide Road and Kent and Cambridge Terraces, and from the Wellington Botanic Garden ki Paek k via Bowen and Whitmore streets.

Wellingtonians have been asking for better transport options for years, they’ve also asked for action on climate change and housing.

In response to this, Wellington City Council has updated Paneke P neke – the city’s bike network plan – and is now preparing to deliver two transitional bike and bus routes that will make it safer and easier to get around the city in low-carbon ways.

These street changes will support the growing neighbourhoods and new ways of living in and moving around our city. Following in the footsteps of many other cities around the world, they will also make our transport system more resilient in the face of major events.

Paneke P neke is integrally connected with the Let’s Get Wellington Moving programme (LGWM), a partnership between central and local government with support from mana whenua partners, which is working to align transport and urban development in the central city, move more people with fewer vehicles and help address the climate crisis.

Consultation shows over 90 percent of Wellingtonians want action on climate change, and the transport network is the most important

place to start because 34 percent of the city’s emissions come from road transport.

Councillor Iona Pannett, Chair of P roro mua, the Council’s Planning and Environment Committee says feedback received on Paneke P neke showed 87 percent support or strongly support the plan.

“The Committee will consider and make final decisions on the network plan in March,” she says.

“Council acknowledges that some of these changes will be challenging for businesses.

We are working intensively with a number of business owners to understand their specific needs and will be doing everything possible to respond to their feedback.”

Councillor Tamatha Paul agrees, and says our first few transitional routes will enable greater transport choices, which is especially important from a transport equity perspective.

“Students, workers, and low-income wh nau living along these routes will have more options to get around safely whether that’s by bus, bike or on foot. These are examples of the groups of people we want feeling safe to take up low carbon methods of moving about our city.

“The changes are part of preparing for development planned and already happening, which will provide more houses while keeping our city compact. We will have a lot more people living close to town, many apartments won’t have car parking, and with limited street space, we need a good a mix of ways for people to get around,” she adds.

The designs have been developed by technical experts and had input from a wide range of organisations and businesses. The project team will be working through final operational issues over the next few months and then engaging more broadly with the community once the interim routes are in place.

The Council is furthering this work with an adaptive approach, as seen with the Brooklyn Hill Cycleway, which received a positive response on how efficiently it was put in place.

People will be able to experience the routes first, then provide feedback.

“These street changes are being implemented using adaptable materials so we can test the designs in real-life and get feedback on how they’re working. Given the impacts of the protests, we’ll be delivering the Botanic Garden ki Paek k later in the year, but we want to let everyone see the plans now,” says Councillor Paul.

The interim bike and bus lane improvements will provide an opportunity to collect data and see how things work, which will help inform decisions about permanent upgrades in the future. This approach to adapting city streets has been a success in other cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Barcelona and Paris, and has helped get connected bike networks in place faster.

Work on the Newtown to city route is scheduled to happen from April to July this year. Work on the Botanic Garden ki Paek k route will follow in July to September. There will also be some preparatory work happening on both routes from early March.

“We’re putting these routes in quickly and then modifying them based on data and feedback because there is no time to waste. We must take action to provide safer ways for people of all ages and abilities to get around, and reduce emissions,” says Councillor Pannett.

Councillor Paul adds: “Through our consultation on Paneke P neke, the bike network plan, people told us that we just needed to get on with it. We’re already receiving a ton of positive feedback and encouragement from locals about this change. It’s been a long time coming.”

The Council agreed last year in the 20212031 Long-Term Plan to accelerate the development of a safe, connected bike network. In September, they voted to get on with delivering these two routes as soon as possible.

Baseline survey results for the first two routes indicate that 44 percent and 55 percent of respondents had experienced a near miss or been involved with a crash on the Botanic Garden and Newtown routes respectively.

Capital Coast District Health Board Chief Financial Officer Matthew Parr says the hospital is delighted to hear safer biking facilities between Newtown and the city are being prioritised and will be in place quickly.

“For our staff, and people who live in this area who ride or would like to, the sooner we can get a safer route the better. Walking and biking offer great health and well-being benefits and changes like this are a great way to make Wellington an even more appealing place to live.”

The designs can be found at transportprojects.org.nz. Feedback on how people are finding the routes and what needs to be adjusted will be welcome once they are in place.

Dhriti a future leader Story courtesy of College Sport Media via College Sport Wellington The name Dhriti means determination, patience and firmness, attributes that Johnsonville Cricket Club player Dhriti Girish has in abundance.

In addition to captaining her rapidly improving First XI cricket team, Dhriti is also responsible for an initiative that’s increasing numbers and quality of experience for players in the Wellington region.

“I created a Young Leaders Programme, which focuses on supporting young women to get involved in cricket through coaching, umpiring and scoring,” Dhriti explained.

“We’re generally able to field a team, but there simply isn’t the same culture of support systems including coaching and umpiring.

In Year 10 at Queen Margaret College every student is involved in a Community Project to serve others in need so I decided to apply it to cricket. I’m really proud of what we’ve achieved so far” In 2020 15 girls were nominated by their club and college coaches for their leadership potential in the inaugural program.

Participants took part in an online coaching qualification course and were then guided by former White Fern Justine Dunce in a series of practicals. Participants backed this up with two self-development and leadership workshops with ex-Olympian Rower and coach mentor Tina Manker.

Dhriti’s industry saw her included in a promotional video for the 2022 World Cup starting in New Zealand next month. The film included New Zealand cricket legend Sir Richard Hadlee, former Black Fern Honey Hireme-Smiler and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. She is a part of a team of 1000 Champions from all over Aotearoa helping “make this the best Cricket World

Cup ever.”

“I can’t wait for the World Cup. It’s unfortunate many events have been called off because of COVID, but I hope the World Cup can inspire many girls to play cricket.

New Zealand has a really good team.”

Dhriti was born in Bangalore, India and shifted to New Zealand with her family in 2017 after her father got a promotion within the IT company he works for. Ironically she didn’t play cricket in India where passion for the sport is fervent.

“I found it really hard when I arrived in New Zealand. Bangalore is such a busy city and Wellington was so quiet. My older brother started playing cricket so I followed him into it.”

“I remember my first game at Onslow College, the coach asked ‘who can bowl?’ I was the only girl who didn’t put their hand up. I got clapped when I rolled my arm over.

“At Johnsonville I actually played in Year 5, two years down. Luckily I was coached by my Dad and the parents and coaches were so supportive. I actually got a hat-trick in one game which was my favourite moment in cricket.”

The right-handed batter and medium pace bowler has quickly matured to become regular representative selection. She is in the Wellington Development squad and well-known to Blaze selectors.

At QMC she is skipper of the First XI who are in the top of Pool 2 in the Premier I competition in 2022. At the intermediate level QMC won the 2021 Junior Shields Cup which is the Wellington Nationals qualifying tournament.

“Captaincy is tricky, but we’ve boosted our numbers in the whole school. I’m still learning and trying to build knowledge all the time.”

RTS impressive in Blues debut Roger Tuivasa-Sheck could have been forgiven for thinking he still played for the Warriors after his new team the Blues choked away their Super Rugby match 33-32 under the roof in Dunedin.

New Zealand rugby’s latest million dollar man, Tuivasa-Sheck, made a promising start to his 15-man career all the same on Saturday night.

The cynic in me believes RTS is

all but assured an All Blacks jersey this season but he looked promising playing at second five-eighth in the encounter where the Blues snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

The 28-year-old had five offloads in the opening 12 minutes and did not shirk his defensive duties in a display that must have made the New Zealand Rugby Union big wigs smile.

RTS will have more stern chal-

lenges at the Super Rugby level in the coming weeks.

With coaches like Leon MacDonald and Joe Schmidt, I’m sure the former Warriors captain will learn quickly.

He also has a chance to bolster the depth of the All Blacks midfield which is an area that looks a little thin at present.

RTS had shades of Sonny Bill Williams but perhaps has the

chance to be more polished but less physically destructive.

RTS has the finesse in his game to be an attacking weapon with the ball in hand as well as a distributor.

His defence was always excellent while playing fullback in rugby league and that should serve him well in the high-traffic area of the midfield.

He is far from a finished product but the early signs were promising

for a smooth transition.

I’d also be remiss not to mention the passing of Inga the Winger who was before my time and Joeli Vidiri.

I saw plenty of Vidiri growing up as he was instrumental in that lethal Blues backline in the opening three seasons of Super Rugby from 1996 to 1998.

A shame when two great players die so young.

Johnsonville outlast Eastern Suburbs for crucial win

Johnsonville took a major step towards their second consecutive Pearce Cup two-day cricket final with a first innings win over arch rivals Eastern Suburbs over the weekend.

A strong foundation from the top-order and then a cavalier century from Wellington Firebird Nathan Smith ensured the crucial outcome as Johnsonville extended their lead in the competition with two rounds to go.

Nathan’s 102 off 69 balls included four fours and eight sixes.

He batted with a failing middle to lower order and helped the visitors to 353 for nine declared.

The top-order laid a strong platform with openers Devan Vishvaka (87) and Scott Mudgway (78) and Gareth Severin

(46) all making meaningful contributions though Scott injured his calf muscle which could force Severin to take the wicket keeping gloves going forward.

It was Nathan’s century which held together the latter part of the innings and it afforded Johnsonville six overs at Eastern Suburbs late on day one which produced two wickets.

Not even another Lauchie Johns ton could get the hosts the points on day two.

Johnsonville were missing three frontline seamers in Zac Ringrose Dom McAlister and Max Petrie, all of whom are expected back this week.

Stand-in seamers David Hudson, Scott Edgecombe and the debuting Avinash Shastri chipped away at a batting lineup which included Firebirds captain Michael Bracewell.

took three wickets each while Avinash added two which helped make Johns’ 100 futile as Eastern Suburbs were dismissed for 292.

Johnsonville captain Raki Weerasundara says Nathan’s pure ball striking was to be admired.

“He probably doesn’t get the plaudits he deserves as an all rounder but he hits the ball so cleanly and then bowled 20 overs on a demanding length,” he says.

“He was a workhorse for us.”

Raki also praised Avinash.

“For a guy on debut, I thought he was fantastic and took it too some really experienced Firebirds players and wasn’t intimidated by the situation.”

Johnsonville now control their own destiny in the Pearce Cup. They will play Karori at Alex Moore Park starting this Saturday.

Wellington turned on a stunning day for our Lychgate Over 60’s Bowls Mixed Triples event played at the Johnsonville Bowling Club on Friday.

This year more bowlers from around the greater Wellington region participated in the one day competition and the quality of the field was outstanding. One of Auckland’s most prolific title winning Women’s player, Linda Ralph, attended as did numerous Wellington Centre title holders, all vying to win the event.

Bowlers competed in four rounds of play and such was the tightness of the competition, three teams finished with four wins each and a count back was needed to split the unbeaten teams.

Rob Ashton, Linda Ralph and Mike Andrews prevailed with Wayne Coleman, Paula Meredith and Gill Oliver second and Ken Brown, Adrian Cronin and Alison Colgate third.

This was the second year Lychgate has sponsored the Mixed Triples event and the Johnsonville Bowling Club and the bowling community are most grateful for their commitment to our sport.

Many thanks to Mr Gaurav Biswas from Lychgate, who was on hand to help with the BBQ and to present the prizes to the winning bowlers.

The Mixed Triples is proving to be a very popular event on the local bowling scene and we look forward to welcoming and hosting even more bowlers next year.
