Late last year local students involved in an environmental science monitoring programme in the Wainuiomata Recreational Area gathered hundreds of samples and the millipede match was among those analysed by Wilderlab in Wellington who were part of the programme.

Wilderlab founder and principal scientist Shaun Wilkinson says the DNA (Edna) sequence from the sample is very close but not a one hundred percent match.

“It is a 99 percent match to it and we probably need to follow it up as it is a very, very close hit,” he says.

“If it has made its way to New Zealand it is really bad news because it has caused problems in Australia. It is in plague proportions over there, but, it could be a species endemic to New Zealand that is closely related.”

“I wouldn’t bank my first born child on it but possibly my second born and it was in a sample taken by Konini school,” Shaun says.

To further investigate the match a team will need to be put together to go up to the site and hunt around and see if they can find them.

The black Portuguese millipede, Ommatoiulus moreletii, is an herbivorous millipede native to Portugal.

“It has made its way across Australia but I don’t believe it is in New Zealand yet.”

From the samples taken Shaun says there were 241different species identified and 4,500 different barcode sequences found that are yet to be matched.

“Not all of those are different species but you get to know the idea of the known diversity compared to the unknown diversity so of the 4,500 we were able to identify about 250 known species,” he says.

Some of the key highlights was they found a Goldfish from a sample at Karaka Park, which are becoming a bit of a problem in waterways and Lamprey appear to be abundant in one particular area.

The most abundant sequence found in the samples was Homo sapiens.

inbrief news Restricted fire season Wellington is now in a restricted fire season.

The change in season came into effect 9am Monday 1 March and includes Kapiti Coast, Porirua, Wellington City and the Hutt Valley.

Principal Rural Fire Officer Craig Cottrill says this means anyone wanting to light an outdoor fire will need to apply for a permit and follow the conditions listed on their permit.

“The ground is getting drier and fire danger has increased,” he says.

“The dry vegetation acts as fuel for a wildfire, meaning if a wildfire did start it could spread very quickly,” Apply for your fire permit if you’re planning an outdoor fire - it’s easy, just go to www.checkitsalright.nz and follow the instructions.”

In a restricted fire season it is okay to use a gas or charcoal barbecue and have a hangi or umu, but follow the safety tips on www.checkitsright.nz.

Families and communities are being encouraged to take part in the 10th Road Safety Week (17 – 23 May 2021) and join hundreds of communities, schools and organisations running activities to help raise awareness of road safety issues.

This year the week will coincide with the UN Global Road Safety Week, and will focus on the topic of speed.

Speeding, or driving too fast for the conditions, is still a major road safety issue.

In 2019, 87 people died and 496 people were seriously injured in crashes where speeding or driving too fast for the conditions was a factor.

Road safety charity Brake, which coordinates the week, is encouraging families and community leaders to go to www.roadsafetyweek.org.nz/ communities for activity ideas and to register for a free online action pack of resources.

People can choose to run their initiative on this theme or any other road safety topic, according to their priorities.

New playing surface for all

A newly upgraded playing surface at Wainuiomata Intermediate School provides enjoyment not only for students but the community as a whole.

Paid for as part of the Ministry of Educations enhancement programme principal Craig Sharp says it was a one off amount of funds made available at the end of 2020.

Part of the reason to have the area spruced up with new basketball hoops was to draw students to the area Craig says.

“The back court didn’t get used at all but now it draws about 30 kids down there which gives more room for everyone.”

Next we will upgrading the signage around the school.

“We want the kids to be really proud of coming here and being here so we have to go that extra mile to make sure the school looks like the sort of school they want to come to and have a sense of pride,” he says.

The new surface has transformed the area and attracted more students to spend time using it and it is also a win for the community who are welcome to use the area so long as they look after it Craig says.

Board members voted unanimously on Monday evening to approve the naming of the newly developed lane off Queen Street Te Ara Raukura Lane.

At the previous heated meeting the name of Wainuiomata’s first and only mayor Harry Martin was in favour but a second vote was held as not all members of the community board were available at the first meeting.

At the conclusion of the first meeting Wainuiomata’s, Aroha Puketapu, Te Ati Awa, laid down a challenge to the Hutt City Council

to honour their partnership with Tangata Whenua.

Aroha says if New Zealand is going to grow up as a country the community in Wainuiomata needs to keep in step with what is going on across the entire country.

“Making sure that the principle of the partnership that the Hutt City Council have with Tangata Whenua is live and enacted in all the decision making that the wards are in charge of,” Aroha says.

“The challenge is to our board here in Wainuiomata to come into line with that.”

After that first meeting Aroha says it was evident that there was

no background knowledge or induction training given to the new board members.

“They didn’t show any awareness of a current and relative partnership, the growth of a nation, the recent legislation that’s been passed in government about how councils are to behave with Maori,” she says.

In principle Aroha says the name shouldn’t have been voted on because then it becomes a token partnership.

“The signal they are sending to this community of Wainuiomata is Tangata Whenua is just a token notion in our mind.”

inbrief news Metlink alert level 2 Following the Government’s alert level 2 announcement Metlink has confirmed that face coverings will remain mandatory on all bus, train and ferry services.

General Manager of Metlink Scott Gallacher says there will be no timetable changes under alert level 2 but passengers will be expected to continue to practice personal hygiene and wear face coverings.

Fares will remain in place, including cash, but Metlink says that contactless methods of payment are preferred to help limit the interactions of staff and passengers. Snapper will be available on buses, while EFTPOS will be available at train ticket offices and on ferries.

New trial layout for Knights Road Creating safer and more enjoyable journeys along Knights Road for all modes of transport is the goal of a five week trial of a new road layout.

The trial aims to test the temporary layout and includes two temporary lanes for cycling, scooting and other active transport modes, speed cushions and signage to encourage slower speeds around the Waterloo intersection and changes to parking and median strip.

And it is not only at schools he shares the culture but an array of places all year round.

“I also coach at the Anglican Chinese Mission in Wellington and we have been performing with different members over the last thirty odd years.”

Air Fryer BBQ Pork Ribs Ingredients:

Method:

• Pork ribs • 1 tablespoon brown sugar • 1 tablespoon white sugar • 1 teaspoon sweet paprika • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika • 1 teaspoon granulated garlic • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper • ½ teaspoon ground cumin • ½ teaspoon granulated onion • ¼ teaspoon Greek seasoning (Optional) • Barbeque sauce

1. Preheat the air fryer to 180 degrees 2. Strip the membrane from the back of the ribs, cut the ribs into 4 equal portions.

3. Combine brown sugar, white sugar, sweet paprika, smoked paprika, granulated garlic, pepper, cumin, onion, and Greek seasoning in a small bowl. Rub spice mixture all over the ribs and place in the air fryer basket.

4. Cook ribs in the air fryer for 30 minutes, turning

after 15 minutes. Brush with barbeque sauce and air fry for 5 more minutes.

Twelve students from low-decile Wellington secondary schools are on the road to realising their potential at Te Herenga Waka— Victoria University of Wellington with the awarding of the 2021 Ng Hoe a Kupe Pathfinder Scholarships.

Nicole Odeyemi formerly from Wainuiomata High School is one of 12 to have been awarded a scholarship.

T h e s c h ol a r s h ip s — backed jointly by the University and its donations arm, the Victoria University of Wellington Foundation—are unique for their provision of wrap-around support, and because they are given to young people who have demonstrated resilience, rather than being based solely on academic ability.

“We are delighted to welcome these 12 extraordinary young people into the Victoria University

of Wellington community,” Vice-Provost (Research) Professor Margaret Hyland says.

“These scholarships, and the wrap-around support we will give the students, will enable them to pursue their passion and excel in their chosen area, thereby helping to open the future for them. We believe in the power of a high-quality tertiary education and are dedicated to the success of each of these scholarship recipients.”

Each recipient was educated at a low-decile secondary school in the wider Wellington region, and they will receive $50,000 over three years to pursue their studies, including their first year in managed hall accommodation. Most of the students have a Maori, Pasifika, or refugee background.

The 12 young women are enrolled in a range of fac-

ulties across the University, and aim to study everything from software engineering to law, finance, and population health, policy, and service delivery.

As well as financial support, the students will have one-on-one academic mentoring, be supported by a student adviser from a similar background as theirs and be part of service and leadership development programme Wellington Plus.

Wellington Plus connects students with other students, employers, and people in the not-for-profit sector across Wellington, and encourages the development of leadership, social responsibility, and employability skills. It includes guest workshops and seminars, and students work towards the Wellington Plus Award, which goes on their academic transcript.

Athletics with a twist By: Gerald Rillstone With a level 2 lock-down looming Konini Primary School managed to hold its athletics day with perfect weather and loads of competitive opportunities for all.

Aside from a 400 metre run around the track all of the traditional style of athletics have been adapted to teach the correct way of throwing or jumping using gumboots in place of discs and a foam pole in place of javelin.

There was no sandy pit for long jump but a padded mat all in aid of teaching technique and competing well.

Assistant principal Matt Pegg says what they are trying to do is the fundamentals of athletics.

“Its all athletic fundamental movement

but done in a way that everyone can do it so much so that even our students that do struggle are full involved.”

“With the gumboot throwing we are aiming for the fundamental movement of rotating the body side on and what we see is a lot of kids that wouldn’t be able to access discus being taught how to do it,” Matt says.

It is important also not to drag the event out all day and by midday it is all over and everyone is ready for an Olympic style medal ceremony.

“We do a full Olympic podium and we do it so that everyone wins something.”

“There are a lot of kids who struggle in the classroom and this is their day and you put all the effort in for those kids and this is the day they remember of performing,” Matt says.

As a fruiting plant the Feijoa has to be at the top of my favourite list for several reasons; it requires minimal attention to produce good quantities of fruit every year, free of most pests and diseases, and it requires little spraying if ever.

Supply ample food and water and it will perform. They are hungry plants and for the biggest and best fruit apply plenty of natural manures and Fruit and Flower Power.

There are a number of types of Feijoa and some will perform better than others in regards to the cropping.

The original is Feijoa sellowiana which grows about 3 to 4 metres tall with a similar spread. These make excellent shelter, screens or hedges and will produce a crop of small fruit. They don’t mind been trimmed and as a hedge makes them for a great sight when in flower.

As for their fruiting side of things, they are not much chop other than for making jams or chutneys.

The more modern cultivars are the ones to go for if you love to eat fresh feijoa fruit.

The fruit when ripe or near ripe fall from the tree and are best collected from the ground rather than picked.

The downside is the fruit once ripe will not hold for long and will soon decay.

Chilling will extend the holding time and you need a lot of fridge space for storing most crops.

One advantage is the fruit does not ripen all at once, so you can have a period

over a few weeks of fruit each season.

They are a medium vigorous tree, moderately compact and easy to manage. Plants are trained up on a single stem to 40 or 50cm in the nursery for ease of harvest once the tree matures.

Flowers in time for Christmas and fruits April - May onwards depending on variety and climate.

Flowers have fleshy petals that attract birds for pollination but the petals from well-watered trees are fleshy enough to pick and add to salads or desserts. They have a spicy sweet flavour.

Feijoas will grow on most soils providing good drainage is present.

Plants have drought tolerance characteristics but require moisture during fruiting season.

The feijoa is a heavy feeder. Feed with high nitrogen NPK slow release fertiliser in late winter (Wallys Secret Tomato Food is ideal) and well-rotted animal manure in autumn.

When training young plants it is important to build a good framework quickly and this will encourage the plant to start fruiting sooner. Some varieties branch naturally while others tend to be leggier in their habit and need to be trimmed lightly in mid-summer. Flowers form from new growth at the tips of last year’s growth, so the bushier the plant the sooner it will fruit.

Bushiness has to be balanced with air and light penetration to help with pollination and disease prevention.

Older established trees are better with a few bigger branches removed each year and this will encourage new canopy growth and flowering within the tree. Hardy to -10°C. Feijoas will grow in almost all soils, however ideal conditions are well drained and a pH 6-6.5 (slightly acid). Alkaline soil causes yellowing and poor shoot growth. Heavier soils produce better quality fruit.

Sandy soils cause excess vegetative growth. They will tolerate moderate salt spray.

I grow a Unique Feijoa in a 100 litre drum and it performs well as long as given ample animal manure, water plus Fruit and Flower Power.

A trimming in summer of the foliage will help bush up the plant and it can become a great looking container plant that is very fruitful.

If you have guava moth problems then a two weekly spray of the fruit (not the tree) with Wallys Super Neem Oil and Raingard added.

Do this once the fruit has formed and are a bit smaller than a ping pong ball. Repeat two weekly till harvest.

Tough times for Tiger The highs have been high and the lows have been just as low for Tiger Woods.

Golf, at this point, is irrelevant for Tiger after he suffered serious leg injuries in a car crash on Wednesday NZ time.

Woods was already on the backnine of his career anyway and after five back surgeries, his days playing golf at a high level were already limited prior to this incident.

Tiger is a global Star.

Despite the off-field dramas, no one has had a bigger impact on their sport than Tiger Woods.

He is the reason golf has been so popular for the past 25 years and I’d argue he’s been more influential in getting young people to play his sport than any other sportsperson on the planet.

Without him, the television coverage of golf would not be as relevant

as it is, the prize money would not be as plentiful and the amount of Sunday hackers who play the sport for fun would be a lot less.

He has also broken down racial barriers in golf.

Like many of us, away from the greens and fairways, he can be a flawed human.

People who fly this close to the sun in terms of popularity often have issues in their personal lives.

Mike Tyson, Kobe Bryant, John Daly etc have all had major battles in life.

Woods made golf mainstream, he made those who played it at the highest level athletes.

If Woods never swings a club again, and doctors have been quoted as saying that is extremely unlikely, then he has nothing left to prove.

Sure, he will have left a few records on the table and probably one or two

majors as well, but Tiger’s impact on the game of golf and sport in general goes well beyond what he did with a club in his hand.

He made wearing red on Sunday fashionable.

He made golf a more inclusive sport.

He allowed kids to dream of a future in golf.

He made the gigantic fist pump cool.

He made golf cool.

Ulalei’s Catholic connection

Take a glimpse at Ulalei Wainuiomata’s touch football and flag football junior team lists and you will find they are dominated by those attending the suburb’s only Catholic school, St Claudine Thevenet Primary School.

Together with the recently formed junior sports club Tamaiti o le

Mauga, the “St Claudine’s” students outnumbered those from any other school playing in the recently concluded E Tu Whanau flag football competition.

This involvement comes as no surprise as the school’s sports programme has a strong netball history (which boasts Northern

Mystics’ star Saviour Tui as one of its alumni); the school is always well represented in interschool athletics squads; and over 90 pupils are playing in the lower Hutt Valley junior touch rugby competition which started last week at Hutt Park.

Says Ulalei grandparent and

founder Fauono Ken Laban, “It’s important that our children remain active no matter what school they attend or club they play for. It just so happens that most of our Ulalei kids attend St Claudine’s. The benefit of the relationships built as school teammates is evident when they come together and play for Ulalei.”

Ulalei’s junior team plays in the Wainuiomata Rugby Club’s touch competition played at Wainuiomata High School. Ulalei acknowledges the great support from many local businesses this season including Ninox Construction, Ashton Panel & Paint, Tom & Luke and Wainui Dental.

Bowls club fundraiser Wainuiomata Bowling Club is hosting a community event on Sunday 7 March at 11am.

This fundraising event is open to everyone including non-bowlers.

The cost is $20 per person which includes an evening meal and four games of bowls of five ends.

They will also be giving out spot prizes, holding raff les and an auction which will include two Hurricane Jerseys, one of which is a 2021 signed jersey the other is from the 2018 Brisbane Global Super 10.

There will also be a signed Silver Ferns netball and a childs bike valued at $400.

All proceeds will be going to the Wainuiomata Lions Non-Profit Club, specifically to provide petrol to volunteer drivers who provide transport for Wainuiomata Cancer patients to and from Wellington hospital.
