Three waters 46% opposed Hutt City Council has shared key findings from the recent community engagement survey on the Government’s proposed three waters reforms.

In April residents were asked to share their thoughts on three areas: impact of reforms on water infrastructure, support for the reforms, and priorities for water services.

Our survey received 774 individual responses.

The key findings are: 46% of respondents opposed the reforms, 38% were in support, and 16% were neutral towards reform.

Council is continuing to analyse the results of the survey, including detailed analysis of the comments.

Big boost to keep our kids in class and learning One of the side effects of COVID has been a decline in school attendance rates that effects students, families and school communities here in Wainuiomata. There is no silver bullet to fix school attendance rates but the $88 million funding package as part of Budget 2022 provides a range of targeted measures to make sure there is support in place for students and communities where it is needed the most.

It’s clear that young people need to be at school, and yet attendance rates haven’t been good for a long time. There are many reasons why students disengage from learning and this has worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic, so we are putting measures in place to help turn that around.

Funding through Budget 2022 will help to make schools a place where all young people want to be, where they can access the support they need and where there are clear ways back into learning for those who have disengaged.

A regional response fund of $40 million over four years is being established to meet local education needs. This will have a strong focus on ensuring students are going to school and are engaged in their learning.

Konini Primary School is just one of the many local schools that has used the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L) programme to successfully strengthen connections within the school community. Budget 2022 sees $18.9 million to fund a refresh of PB4L delivery to ensure the programme is updated and is tailored for our community. This extra funding will deliver 14 new School-Wide practitioners so each school using this service receives high quality support tailored to their needs. There is also funding to expand Check & Connect: Te Hononga and Te Mana Tikitiki, which provides

targeted and intensive supports for Maori and Pacific learners at risk of disengaging We’re committed making schools a safe and inclusive place to be. This helps young people to be focused and able to enjoy learning. We also want to support teachers to meet the challenges that come with teaching in diverse communities, particularly for those with additional learning needs. Young people thrive when strong relationships exist between schools, parents, wh nau and communities - and this improves education outcomes for our kids.

This funding boost will help to strengthen our community ties. It’s aimed at improving attendance and engagement with learning, including funding to address cost pressures for support caregivers, whanau and our schools.

It’s about putting our tamariki first.

The flu. Don’t get it.

There’s a nip in the air for sure lately. Which means now is the time to think about getting a flu shot.

Clive reckons that almost everyone can benefit from the protection of an annual flu shot. Getting the flu is a major threat as it can spread quickly through the community.

Not matter how fit, healthy, or tough you are, you’re not immune to the flu. It can strike at any time and will leave you unable to do just about anything. The flu can make you seriously ill and keep you in bed for at least a week.

This is particularly true if you are elderly or have an ongoing medical condition.

However, even if you don’t feel sick, you could still have the virus and pass it on to others.

A common misunderstanding is that the flu vaccine can give you the flu. This is not true. The flu shot is made up of dead flu viruses, so you can’t catch the flu from them. What happens is that after your shot, your body learns

Controlling some pests : By Wally Richards I am often asked about how to control populations of slugs and earwigs in gardens without using the usual chemicals.

You may not realise it but both earwigs and slugs do provide benefit to your gardens as they prefer decomposing plant material to living plants so if you are clean and tidy and there are no rotting plants available then they will do damage to your growing plants.

When you are weeding if you leave some weeds on the soil to break down naturally then the two pests will become assets.

Sprinkling lawn mowing clippings onto gardens is another way of using what many consider a waste product to benefit.

One precaution with that is if the lawn grasses are seeding as you would then be putting a lot of new grass weeds into your gardens to germinate later.

If the slugs and earwigs (You can include with them slaters or as some call them wood lice) are a real problem then you could try the following.

I learnt about this method a long time ago and have often suggested to gardeners to use it.

What you need is some strips of 3plywood or similar about 250-300mm long and about 150mm wide.

These are laid down on the soil in areas where you are having problems with the pests.

Now you take a trigger sprayer and mix two parts bleach to one part water.

During the day you fold back the slats of ply onto their far edge and see what is hiding under them.

If you have some of the pests you wish to control simply give them a spray of your bleach and lay the ply back down on top of them.

Repeat the same process regularly until you have the pest population under control.

Slugs and snails cannot tolerate copper as it makes them dehydrate and die.

If either pest comes into contact with copper they will not pass over the barrier it creates.

So this can be used to protect seedings from being their evening meal.

I suggest placing untreated sawdust around the seedlings you wish to protect then spraying the sawdust and seedlings with Wallys Liquid Copper

and Raingard added.

Much safer than using toxic poisons to kill them and better for the safety of your pets and wild life.

There is another slug like pest which is commonly called the Cherry Slug or Pear Slug as it feeds on these trees during the summer period when they are active.

They start about November to December in most areas and can be seen as a small black slimy slug on the foliage which they are eating.

If you do not treat this first generation then in January to February there will be a second large wave of them and damage will correspondingly increase.

The best solution is to spray the foliage with Wallys Liquid Copper with Raingard added as they can not handle copper either.

Another one that can be used for snails and slugs is the mineral iron.

There is a slug and snail bait on the market that uses chelate iron as the killing component which means it fairly save for pets and wild life.

You can make a slug and snail bait yourself by soaking bran in a solution of sulphate of iron and water or if you have available use chelate iron.

Add to this yeast which is what attracts the pests and they will eat the bran which now contains iron and die as a result.

There is one pest that you will never gain complete control of if they are in your area and that is ants.

Many of the ant baits on the market are only effective for a little while as the ants become bait shy to them

realising that the bait is what is killing them.

Many years ago I found a very old formula that ants never seem to wake up to the fact it is killing them.

We call it Granny Mins Ant Bait and the container has a combination of Borax and Boric Acid with the recipe on how to make it up.

The product is very inexpensive selling for about $7.00 and you just dissolve the jars contents in hot water and add the required amount of sugar and honey. It makes just about a litre of bait.

Stir well and place the mixture in small jar lids wherever you see ants.

Top up the lids as they empty till there is no more ant activity.

The bait should only be used outdoors and if you have any concern for pets then put a small amount of liquid ant bait into small jars and lay then on their sides on the ground.

The small amount of ant bait used is not likely to be harmful to pets but better safe than sorry.

If ants are inside your home then the easy most effective way is to set up one or more of those insect cans that release pyrethrum spray every few minutes.

As long as that can is operating and even for a few weeks after it has emptied no ants will come into that area.

They detect that there is pyrethrum around and know it is not good for them.

Cockroaches inside your kitchen are a curse for some people and the easy way to control them safely is to sprinkle Borax powder behind the fridge and stove.

Chocolate on the menu for runners on Saturday The Wainuiomata Harrier Club are holding their annual Robyn Small Chocolate run and walk from their clubrooms at Richard Prouse Park, Hine Road this Saturday.

People can meet at the clubrooms at 1.45pm for a 2pm start.

The event has four distances to choose from, 1.5km, 3km, 4.5km or 6km.

The idea is to choose your distance, guess what time you might be able to do, leave watches and phones behind, run or walk your distance and try to get as close to your time as possible.

The closest wins chocolate.

The course will be mostly offroad, on the grass, and reasonably flat, so suitable for everyone.

All abilities are welcome, and no experience necessary.

People are asked to bring a

$2 coin to cover the cost of the chocolate as there will be a lot.

If you need a bit of cobweb dusting before Saturday then please join us on the ‘Couch to 4km’, meeting every Wednesday at 5pm at “The Rock” by the roundabout on the corner of Fitzherbert Street and Parkway Extension.

No experience is necessary, and you can go as fast or as slow as you like and it’s free.

HOBM grind out win over Wainui A spirited first half was not enough to see Wainuiomata unseat Hutt Old Boys Marist in their Swindale Shield rugby match, on Saturday.

Despite the 33-6 defeat, team manager Gail Ah Hi says the first half effort was promising.

“We really stuck to our task well and pushed them,” she says.

“It was really only the last 10 minutes that things got away from us.”

Wainuiomata first five Justin Wilson replied almost straightaway with a penalty and the next 30 minutes went scoreless in an armwrestle. Wainuiomata also lost No. 8 and captain Teru Time in the middle stages of the half.

Wilson kicked his second penalty early in the second half to narrow the gap to 7-6. They lost a second player to the sin-bin, wing Jason Love, but the match remained in the balance for a further 15 minutes.

Gail says it was an improvement from the inexperienced Wainuiomata team as they get set to welcome Tawa on Saturday.

In other games the Wainuiomata women’s team lost 43-17 to Avalon, the colts beat Johnsonville 29-19 and the presidents grade beat Stokes Valley 32-23.

Wainuiomata extend unbeaten premier run In a game that saw both teams down to 10 men, Wainuiomata Capital Premier side backed up their win against Upper Hutt with another win by beating North Wellington 2-1. North Wellington took the lead in the 20th minute which they held until the break thanks to a big defensive effort from Wainui.

Already behind, things got harder for the lads as Ethan Hakaraia saw red for a challenge on the edge of the box which forced head coach Mark Foster to make some changes.

He bought on Paikea Bai and was rewarded almost instantly as Paikea pulled things back to 1-1 within two minutes of being on the field. With Wainui on the backfoot, Mark made a defensive change hoping not to concede another goal. In the 90th minute of the game, Wainui got a corner and Isaac Harper latched onto a goalkeeper error scrambling the ball over the line with his face to give Wainui a 2-1 lead with minutes remaining. North Wellington had a man sent off due to some protests from the goal, making for an intense

final few minutes but the lads hung on to the 2-1 lead and climb to fourth on the table.

In other games, the Reserves bounced back from their defeat the week before with a comfortable 5-2 win away to Karori. The Thirds were unable to continue their momentum and suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat away to Petone. Despite a late goal to Brendan Whyman, Halfbaked walked away from their game empty handed as they lost 3-1 to North Wellington and their search for the first win of the season continues. The Horns finally got their first ever win in the green and black as they were able to hold on against Miramar to win 3-2.

After a week off, our three Masters sides returned to action. The Undertakers, who had lost their opening two games, travelled to a Seatoun side who had won their opening two games. A solid defensive and team effort saw the game end in a nil all draw and give the Undertakers their first point of the season.

Wainuiomata badminton returns home The Wainuiomata Badminton Club are having an opening night on Monday as the new season begins.

This will be the club’s first night back in the Wainuiomata War Memorial Hall for almost two years due to the Covid restrictions and the recent strengthening of the hall.

Club spokesperson Annette Williamson says the club is keen to grow its membership as they get back to their familiar facilities.

“Opening night will be free and thereafter only $5 a night,” she says.

“Racquets and shuttles are also provided.

“This is a social club so all abilities are welcome.”

The open night will start at 7:15pm.
