Parks unique museum By: Gerald Rillstone

With visitor numbers to Wainuiomata reserve increasing there is an added attraction to the area, a museum telling the story of the water catchment area.

Ricky Clarkson, Park Ranger for Greater Wellington’s Wainuiomata and Orongorongo Regional Parks has been managing the area for the past six years and was instrumental in setting up the museum.

He says recent figures show an increase in people visiting the area more than previous years and he is keen for people to know what a gem of a place it is if they venture a little further into the valley.

“This area is a bit of an undiscovered gem. Lots of people don’t really know about it, they know about the swimming holes out the front of the park but because the road is one way it puts a lot of people off,” Ricky says.

He says the museum is one of the things put in place to encourage people to venture a bit further into the park.

In a room attached to his office there are several historic displays showing the area’s history as a water supply for the Wellington region.

Ricky has gathered together old instruments used for measuring stream flow and river levels and there is an old fashioned telephone which

when you pick up the receiver you can hear one of the park’s past caretakers talking about life back in the day.

There are large panorama photos showing the area and information on predator control and the various dams and a tunnel built over the last 140 years.

Many people may also be unaware of the importance of the area in supplying water to greater Wellington with water taken directly from weirs in both the Wainuiomata and Orongorongo catchments. A nearby treatment plant produces up to 60 million litres of high-quality water per day supplying around 15 percent of the water used.

There is a new loop track in the planning and the Regional Council is calling for input into the draft plan of the area.

They are also waiting on feedback

from the public to turn the area into an international dark sky park.

There is an event this weekend free to the public to come and view the stars and planets and can be booked on eventfinder.

Every kereru counts This year marks the 17th year that Greater Wellington Regional Council has monitored Kererū in Kaitoke Regional Park to track their health, which is essential to our native bush regeneration and wider biodiversity.

With the results in, a soaring number of kerer were recorded at an average of 107 birds, compared to an average of 71 birds last year.

Kererū are considered a ‘keystone’ species as they are one of the few native species left that can eat larger fruits, making them

essential dispersers for some native trees, says Faline Drummond, Greater Wellington environmental monitoring officer.

“They are also excellent species that provide an indicator of biodiversity health, which is primarily achieved through ongoing pest control on council managed lands,” adds Faline.

Greater Wellington’s kerer count is a month-long task that involves an understanding of Kererū to routinely monitor the park.

This monitoring is separate from

the Great Kererū Count which is a nationwide citizen science project run by Urban Wildlife Trust & Kererū Discovery, however their data is included in Greater Wellington’s results.

“Since we started the counts in 2003, we’ve noticed a significant increase in the number of Kererū which is due to the increased efforts to control pests through official programmes and the community.”

Despite increasing numbers of Kererū they are still under threat by mustelid and rodents – especially

now that it is breeding season.

Greater Wellington councillor, Prue Lamason says, “These numbers are really important for us to understand Kererū movements, breeding patterns and to measure the benefits of the ongoing pest control in park’s in the area.”

“We’re calling on the community to keep up the good work, we can all play our part by trapping in our backyards and planting native trees such as kowhai, hinau, tawa, miro and manatu lowland ribbon wood,” adds Cr Lamason.

Enliven positive ageing services has launched a new online social enterprise aimed at New Zealand retirees and their families.

ShopEnliven.org.nz will quickly become a one-stop shop for elders, says Enliven General Manager – External Relations, Alisha Kennedy.

“We have started small, but the website is growing each week with new products.”

Products include daily living aids, gifts, books and entertainment, specialty products for people with conditions like dementia, low-vision and incontinence, and specifically modified food and beverages.

“We’d been getting feedback from our teams and residents at our homes and villages that they often couldn’t find the simple daily living aids they needed, like a long-handled shoe-horn,” Alisha explains.

“Many people might not even know these things are available to make life a bit easier.

Now they can visit a single website to find all they need.”

Alisha says in time the aim is to develop a good selection of gifts for older people.

“We often hear families saying they struggle to find gifts for their older relatives, including those living at rest homes, and that got us thinking about how we could help. We’re working on a great range of gifts.

“We’d also love to stock more New Zealandmade products and we encourage people to get in touch if they have a product that would be of interest to older people across the country.”

Enliven, part of the not-for-profit organisation Presbyterian Support Central, offers a range of services and support for older people across New Zealand.

Services vary between regions depending on the needs of the community. In the lower North Island, Enliven is well-known for its boutique retirement villages and elder-directed rest home, hospital and dementia care.

inbrief news Call for Bikers in Blue Prostate Cancer Foundation NZ and Indian Motorcycle are calling on bikers across the country to once again ride in solidarity, in the annual Bikers in Blue, Sunday 22 November, a show of support for the thousands of Kiwis affected by prostate cancer.

“If you haven’t been personally affected by prostate cancer, you’re bound to know someone who has,” says Indian Motorcycle’s Country Manager, Glenn Veal, “and as such it is important that we all do our part to help raise awareness for this disease and help break the stigma around regular testing.”

Registrations are now open for the rides in Auckland, Hamilton, Wairarapa, Wellington, Christchurch and Invercargill.

Bikers in Blue is a great opportunity for fellow bikers to come together en masse in what is always a great day, for a good cause - people from all walks of life, on all sorts of bikes with a common goal, raising awareness in the fight against prostate cancer.

Carpentry graduate inspires

WelTec carpentry graduate, Sarah Clark, wants to start a company that champions female tradies.

Sarah is currently employed

by Tonks Residential, a local construction company, as an apprentice builder.

Sarah was introduced to the company while she was completing her Level 3 carpentry programme at WelTec in Lower Hutt, as part of her Maori and Pasifika Trades Training (MPTTS) scholarship. The scholarship supports students from entry into study, right through to employment, and an important part of this journey is to get work experience - which

in Sarah’s case led directly to her first apprenticeship.

Loving her new job at Tonks, and succeeding at it as a young, petite female - has inspired Sarah to want to create an environment that supports and encourages women into the trades.

Carpentry is often considered a man’s job, but Sarah believes that seeing other women succeed in the trades could make it a more accessible career path for young women.

“My aunt is an electrician so the idea of being a woman in the trades was not unusual for me when I was growing up. I definitely believe that the more young girls see females in

the trades, the more common it will become,” Sarah says.

Sarah grew up in Lower Hutt, living with her grandparents and attending Sacred Heart Col lege. She complet e d year 13 but knew that she didn’t want to spend more time ‘sitting in a classroom’.

Sa ra h was suppor ted through her course by the Tamaiti Whangai team at WelTec as part of her Maori and Pasifika Trades Training (MPTTS) scholarship.

“The scholarship is as much about covering the costs of study as it is about supporting students to be the best they can be,” says Hinemoa

“The team helps our learners with all manner of things - from getting a driver’s licence, sourcing equipment for their hands-on learning, and importantly providing wrap around pastoral, cultural, and wellbeing support.

“Having my course fees covered by the MPTTS made a huge difference because it meant that I could concentrate on my studies without having to worry about how to cover my costs,” she says.

Wearable Arts While Covid-19 may have scuppered the official Wearable Arts show from happening in Wellington this year, it’s full steam ahead for Enliven’s Woburn Home in Lower Hutt.

Staff and residents from a number of Enliven’s homes across the Lower North Island have been working away on outfits for this year’s show, which is now a highlight in the positive ageing service provider’s calendar.

The theme this year is ‘Reuse, Repurpose and Recycle’ and features a special ‘Decorated Facemasks’ category.

There are two shows this year at Woburn Home, located at 57 Wai-Iti Crescent, Woburn, Lower Hutt.

Do you think you might be suffering from pollen allergies? Seasonal hay fever is one of the most common types of allergic condition in New Zealand.

Those who are allergic to pollen usually start to display symptoms in their early teens.

The main culprit is introduced perennial ryegrass, which produces masses of wind-blown pollen from about September right through to February.

• Try to keep your windows closed at night to avoid pollen being blown inside your home.

Hub entertainment Having time to enjoy the school holidays was all about creating for youngsters at the Wainuiomata Library and Community Hub. These school holidays have provided a range of opportunities to keep children of all ages busy with Dreamy Nail Art where children were encouraged to dare to be different and create their own dreamy nail designs. Also to the

opportunity to design a mask, give it their own style and then come along and have it sewn together by Wainuiomata Children’s and Teens Librarian Alexia Herrera.

The fun continues this week with All things Poi on Friday and a Scavenger Hunt around Queen Street on Saturday the 10th of October put together with Love Wainuiomata and Hub staff.

Breast Cancer Foundation NZ is urgently looking for local volunteers to help out with its Pink Ribbon Street Appeal on 30 and 31 October.

Around 340 collectors will be at sites across the region, but area coordinators are still needed in Wellington Central , Island Bay, Karori, Miramar, Newtown, Kilbirnie, Porirua, Queensgate, Tawa and Wainuiomata to manage a small team of volunteers at local collection sites.

Area coordinators will be supplied with a detailed briefing, a roster of volunteer collectors, street permits, and all the materials necessary to run a successful appeal. Anyone interested in being either a volunteer coordinator or collector is encouraged to email pinkribbon@bcf.org. nz or phone 0508 105 105 for more information.

The Pink Ribbon Street Appeal raises vital funds to support women going through breast cancer, search for ground-breaking scientific discov-

eries and spread the message about the importance of early detection and going for regular mammograms.

Across Aotearoa 10,000 volunteers will raise money at 1,400 collection points.

Each year, around 335 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in Greater Wellington, and sadly every year we still lose around 65 women there to breast cancer.

“We couldn’t run the Pink Ribbon Street Appeal without the support of our amazing volunteers. By giving a little time, people in Wellington can make a huge difference. The money raised will help us to make zero deaths from breast cancer a reality, funding breast cancer research, education and patient support,” Evangelia Henderson, chief executive of Breast Cancer Foundation NZ says.

“It’s been a tough year for everyone and we never imagined we’d be launching this year’s appeal in the middle of a global pandemic. But this

year has shown how great New Zealanders are at banding together, and we hope Wellington will show some love for Kiwis affected by breast cancer by supporting our appeal.”

Kidz Hub fun As far as school holidays programmes go kidz Hub is proving pretty popular.

Coordinator Rita Taheo says the programme has been operating for the last three years and is based at Pukeatua Primary School.

“This is our smallest group because

of Covid parents are still working from home but on a normal day we would have around 70 kids,” Rita says.

“We like to take the kids local and we do take them over the hill to places like Staglands and all our workers are family and we encourage the kids to do sports activities,”

Wainuiomata author Dahlia Malaeulu will be launching her latest work, a collection of stories from contributing authors (8 are from Wainuiomata) on October 10.

Titled, “Teine Samoa” the book contains 14 stories from real life Samoan women.

Dahlia says she is very excited about her latest book which she wrote during lockdown earlier in the year.

“I am so excited to share our book with the world and to encourage others to share their stories in order for us collectively as Pasifika to be seen, heard and valued,” Malaeulu said.

The story follows the journey of discovery of four junior high school students, their families, their teachers and, most importantly,

anyone who has ever faced the challenges of being a Samoan girl.

Dahlia says the best feedback has been from educators who said that they wished that there were books like ‘Teine Samoa’ when they were growing up.

She approached the women to be included in ‘Teine Samoa’ between July and August of 2020.

“Seven students and seven educators contributed to the Teine Samoa Project which is the final section of the book,” she says.

“I had previously heard all fourteen contributing authors’ stories as ex-students or colleagues or educational leaders within our Pasifika educator community so I already knew how powerful

their stories were and that they reflected many of our people’s experiences.”

Belonging, accepta nce and cultural understanding underpin all their stories, Dahlia says and schools are contacting her from around New Zealand asking for the book.

“I’ve had high schools contact me from around New Zealand asking if there will be more coming and when the paperback will be launched.”

“A non-Pasifika teacher even emailed me explaining how a student shared the e-book with her and it gave her an insight to the cultural world of her Samoan students and the dual realities so many of us live in,” she says.

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

Grease a 9x13-inch pan.

2. Combine the melted butter, sugar, cocoa powder, vanilla, eggs, flour, baking powder, and salt. Spread the batter into the prepared pan. Decorate with walnut halves, if desired.

3. Bake in preheated oven for 20 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with crumbs, not wet. Cool on wire rack.

Wainuiomata artist shares his talent By: Gerald Rillstone Gary Gerard’s love of art started way back as a young lad working away on colouring in books and over the decades he has developed his talent and tutors a mix of art styles with mental health participants (tangata whaiora people seeking wellness).

Born in Gisborne, a Ngati Porou descendant, Gary’s passion for art started from shopping trips with his aunty when she would buy him colouring in books.

From there his talent was recognised by intermediate school teachers where he was selected to be in a special art class with other gifted students.

“By the time I got to high school sport had become my main passion, in particular

rugby union, although I did pass School C art and after leaving high school I moved south to Wainuiomata.” he says.

Gary has been a long time resident of Wainuiomata and has represented both Wainuiomata and Petone in rugby league winning 4 grand finals.

He works with many medias such as oil, acrylics, collage using items found while beach combing.

“I taught myself to bone carve and have also tried my hand at wood and stone carving and I have painted everything from portraits to animals, landscape to kowhaiwhai. I will take on the masters from time to time and try my hand at Goldie or Lindauer or as I would say, to challenge myself,” he says.

Dahlia Malaeulu Teacher, mum and writer.  What food do you crave most often?

Chocolate.  When you have had a bad day, what do you do to feel better?

Exercise, probably because I need to do more of it, otherwise chocolate.  What’s one thing on your bucket list?

I really want to return home and live in Samoa for at least a few months to a year to develop literacy programmes, resources, support teachers and schools. Or be a back-up dancer for Beyonce when she goes on tour. But I think I have better chances with the first one.  Who has been the biggest inspiration in your life?

My mother, aunts and grandmother. I was raised by very strong women and is probably why I am admire strong female figues within my own Samoan history like Nafanua or the women of the Mau and modern day thought leaders like Brene Brown  What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever been?

Sinalei Reef & Resort in Siumu, Samoa, because it’s where my husband and I got married and this year we will be celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary. Time really does fly!

 What was the last photo you took?

It was of my upcoming MG/YA Book, Teine Samoa, being delivered to my house. I took pictures and videos of opening the

boxes, of the books themselves, the books in different parts of my house and with my family members.

Just a little bit excited and obsessed with this new book launching 10th October.  What thing do you really wish you could buy right now?

A new house by the beach. On a private island.

Far, far away from Covid!

 What is the best or worst purchase you’ve ever made?

I’m not a big shopper and very resourceful #cheap but when I was in my 20s, I remember buying shoes that looked nice but didn’t really fit me and I still wore them.

Now that I’m older the worst purchases are meals at restaurants that are not worth the money you paid.  Favourite programme currently watching?

I’ve been watching Origins with Scotty Morrison lately and I love watching Pasifika programmes online, like anything from Coconet TV and Oriana TV.  If you had to flee the country, where would you choose to live?

Definitely Samoa or the Cook Islands.

I remember years ago reading a garden book which explained how to build and operate a compost bin.

It was in the 60’s to 70’s describing the standard way of composting on a quarter acre section.

I have built a few compost bins myself at different places that I lived. In fact one of the first jobs on moving to a new home was to construct a two bin compost unit.

This was done by constructing a double bin out of wood, the easy way to explain this is the construction of one bin.

Four square posts, 100 x 100 mm would be placed about a metre apart to form a square.

These would either be dug into the soil or left free standing, with wooden slats, 100 to 150mm nailed to the outsides of the posts leaving a little gap of about 10mm between each slat.

These would cover three sides of the square leaving the front open at this stage.

The second bin would use one side of the first bin and be constructed likewise alongside the original using another two posts. We now

have a rectangle structure with two open sides in the front.

The front posts would have two 20mm wide strips of wood nailed to the length of the posts which would be the guides so that loose slats of wood could be slid down the posts and later removed by sliding upwards.

As the wood used needs to be Macrocarpa otherwise if using tantalized timber then after cutting to size paint, it all over with acrylic paint to prevent chemicals leeching into the compost.

A couple of these slats would be slid down the first bin and then one would start to fill the bin with green material such as grass clippings, weeds, leaves, animal manures, sweepings of the floor, kitchen scraps and the family potty.

More slats would be slid down the front till the first bin was full. Then slats would be progressively removed as one forked the contents into the second bin.

The moving of the material in this manner allowed air through the composting material, thus re-heating the pile and breaking it down faster.

This procedure could be repeated, backwards and forwards a few times until one was happy with the compost which then was applied to the garden.

Another method was also used back then in which one would dig a trench the width of the vegetable garden about two spade deep and 2-3 spades wide.

Into this trench at one end, would go all the kitchen scraps, family potty and other organic waste.

When the bit at the end reached soil level it would be covered with earth and more waste would be placed in front of this till the trench was full of waste and covered in soil.

Another trench would then be dug alongside, a couple of feet apart and progressively filled in the same manner. Over time the whole of the vegetable plot would have received a good dosing of material.

O nce a t rench wa s covered, a crop such as silverbeet or leeks would

be planted on top (Heavy feeders that use up the cream of this method followed by plants that are not heavy feeders).

Little ground was left bare except for the trench area as one had to produce sufficient vegetables all year round to keep the family fed. Thus we have looked at two ways of composting organic waste the latter is much more beneficial to the soil and garden.

But let us now look at what actually happens in nature. The best place to observe this is to walk through a forest or bushed area and note all the litter that is on the forest floor.

If we scratch down under the litter of leaves and things we find an abundance of worms and creatures along with a good layer of humus that has been created by the action of the soil life from past litter.

Composting creates greenhouse gasses where mulching traps carbon dioxide in the soil to the benefit of our plants and planet.

The key is to work with Nature not against it.

Get us close with a crowd After six months of Covid-life, there is starting to be positives to watching sport in this environment.

The lack of true crowds and fans is odd, and bad news for the bean counters, plus if you dislike the piped-in crowd noise, then that can be distracting as well.

As a huge New York Yankees fan, I’ve been glued to the start of the Major League Baseball playoffs and while the stadiums are empty, it’s

been fun to hear the players more.

It’s given an added dimension to the coverage.

You can hear the clapping, chat and jeering from the dugout, you can hear the batter, catcher and home plate umpire interact in a way that would be impossible in a normal playoff atmosphere with 50,000-plus fans in the stand.

The same can be said for the NBA playoffs in Orlando.

The contact and aggravation at times is clearly audible and it has made me wonder, when fans return, how will television take one of the bright outcomes of this global pandemic and keep the same level of interaction viable with the atmosphere of crowds.

There is no doubt sport is better with fans in the stands, that will never change but television is the main revenue generator.

Sky, who produces a consistently good product and new kids on the block, Spark Sport, who better get the Black Caps cricket right in their debut season, both must take the positives from the past six months and implement them into their broadcasts.

It’s a tough market but viewers have always wanted to feel like they are in the middle of the action.

There just has to be a way to do it while there is a sellout crowd in the stands as well.

Interesting times as fans become more of the norm once again.

There is an opportunity there if either of these companies can capitalise.

Huge three days of racing coming up at Taupo

All roads lead to the Bay of Plenty this coming Labour Weekend as the reshuffled 2020-21 New Zealand motocross season kicks into life with the traditional annual MX Fest in Taupo.

The popular Huka Honda-sponsored MX Fest event has again attracted all the nation’s major riders and race teams and this year will be an extra special event, now set to run over three days, from October 23-25.

Now in its 35th year, this year’s expanded MX Fest will kick off with the Battle of the Clubs event on Friday, the racing here a traditional fundraiser for Team New Zealand’s annual assault on the Motocross of Nations (MXoN) in Europe.

Although the 2020 edition of this international “Olympic Games of Motocross” is not going ahead in France this season, it simply means funds raised over Labour Weekend will help the Kiwis get

a head-start on building for their 2021 campaign.

The club-versus-club format used for this event – which is similar to the nation-versus-nation configuration of the MXoN – is immensely popular with the New Zealand motocross community.

The Battle of the Clubs is an event that had originally been scheduled to run earlier this year, before it was postponed due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic.

Wrapping up Friday’s programme will be the Bell helmets-sponsored Dirt Sprint – a knock-out format series of short races – and this is scheduled for late afternoon.

As usual, the weekend will feature the mini riders, junior and women racers in action on Saturday, with the popular Alpinestars-sponsored Speedcross again planned for the man-made “stadium” section of the park on Saturday evening.

The following day is reserved for senior motocross racing and this will be “shake off the cobwebs” time for all of the leading

race teams as they build towards the start of the 2021 motocross nationals.

There will no doubt be some exciting match-ups, with drawcard riders such as Mount Maunganui’s Cody Cooper, Taupo’s Brad Groombridge, Tauranga’s Josiah Natzke, Oparau’s James Scott, Mangakino pair Maximus Purvis and Kayne Lamont, West Auckland’s Hamish Harwood, Tauranga’s Brodie Connolly and Waitakere’s Ethan Martens, for example, all keen to start the season with a bang.

“This will be a huge weekend of motorcycling activities,” said Taupo Motorcycle Club president Bevan Weal.

“It will be a huge release for many after COVID restrictions and we can’t thank our sponsors enough for still being there for us.

For months over 200 tennis clubs across NZ have been busily preparing for this weekend, all with one goal in mind – to showcase tennis as the perfect sport for Kiwi’s young and old and the Wainuiomata Tennis Club will be doing their bit.

Over 20,000 people from across the country are expected to attend Love Tennis open days, being held from 1-4pm on Saturday and Sunday in nearly every corner of NZ. “The Love Tennis weekend is all about showcasing tennis clubs to their community. Nearly everyone has a tennis club just up the road from them and this weekend they’re united in opening their doors and showing everyone what a great place their local tennis club is. Clubs will be offering lots of fun activities on and off the court and there are loads of giveaways.

Best of all it’s 100% free to attend! Whether you’re a former player or have never been to a club before, you will see how easy it is to pick up a racquet and play.” said Tennis NZ CEO Julie Paterson.

Love Tennis 2019 saw 120 clubs taking part and over 14,000 attendees took part. This year promises to be even bigger with 208 venues from Kaitaia to Invercargill.

The 2019 event was a finalist in the Event Excellence category in the NZ Sport & Recreation Awards.

“The secret to the success of Love Tennis is our people,” Love Tennis National Coordinator Mel Jansen says. “We provide all the marketing support and resources to clubs and then they go and connect with the people in their local community.

There are thousands of volunteers involved in planning and organising the event and it’s so amazing to see the buzz at the courts and the great atmosphere they create,” Mel says.

Love Tennis 2020 takes place 10 and 11 October from 1-4pm each day at Wainuiomata Tennis Club and it is free to take part, all equipment is provided and no experience is necessary.
