From the start of the pandemic the local iwi have been a huge support for all in the community and made a tough sacrifice to close the Marae for general use and open it as a vaccination centre.

Along with this they have fed and supported the wider community through the toughest of times, and when word came of a possible influx of anti vax protesters wanting to target the Marae they put the call out for help and the community responded in big numbers.

Tina Olsen-Ratana who was part of the team protecting the Marae says they have had local support day and night with people coming and spending time at the gates to supplies of food.

“The community has been amazing and it has brought solidarity among the community, the Marae has always been there for everybody,” Tina says.

“It has been difficult because some of them are locals but the majority are saying enough is enough.”

Iwi, Marae, and Wainuiomata community leaders have a simple message for protestors across the Wellington region - “show some respect and let us be.”

Collectively, we have a role to protect our people, our whenua, our Marae and our communities.

After the hate and violence I saw at Parliament it was so reassuring to be a part of a community wrapped tightly in aroha, and genuine care for each other. I reckon kaumatua summed it up pretty well when they said “It’s their right to be not vaccinated but it’s our right to be vaccinated as well. So why should they stop us from being able to do that?”

Wainuiomata Marae was targeted because it has been operating as a vaccination centre. It was one of the very first in the Hutt Valley to open up and make sure that as many people as possible were vaccinated before this Omicron outbreak arrived. They have done an outstanding job at putting others before themselves. Many times, when there has been a tangi or an important community event it has been hard not having the use of the marae. This sacrifice has helped the Hutt Valley rank so highly in national vaccination rates, particularly for Maori, and we know it has saved lives.

The fact protestors served kaumatua with a notice to leave Wainuiomata Marae is insulting. The unified community response to this threat was just massive. During the time I was at

the marae car after car came to provide food - there was so much provided that it went to support those families who are currently self-isolating. The local Principal brought the extra school lunches, community Police stopped in and gave cold drinks, some people just wanted to provide koha to the marae.

And heaps and heaps of people beeped and waved out in support.

The scenes of anger, fire and violence at the front of Parliament will stay with us for a long time. But I hope that the strength, aroha and unity this community has shown will last even longer.

Wainuiomata Cleanfill step nearer to permanent closure

Hutt City Council is progressing the closure of the Wainuiomata Cleanfill site by June 2022.

This is part of a phased approach to close the Wainuiomata Cleanfill, which needs to be completed

by June 2022 due to consent conditions.

Council agreed not to extend the Cleanfill’s consent further.

On 28 February 2022 the site

stopped receiving most materials, with the exception of topsoil, which is required to remediate the site prior to the area being planted with trees.

“We’re pleased to announce that we are taking appropriate steps towards the closure of the Wainuiomata Cleanfill, as required by resource consent conditions,” Hutt City Council Environment & Sustainability Director Helen Oram says.

“The site has enabled local builders and developers to access an appropriate area for their cleanfill waste, however, it is now time for it to shut. We are looking forward to the establishment of trees on this site, in line with a site remediation plan that has been developed with the input from the Cleanfill Community Liaison Group, which in time will contribute in a small way to our climate change response.”

An alternative cleanfill site at Kiwipoint remains open and accessible, and a further site is being developed in Fergusson Drive, Upper Hutt.

An audit of the site last week allowed members of the Cleanfill Community Liason group to have a look at the entire site.

The intention is for the site to be fully planted out so far 8,000 plants have been planted and then it will be closed to the public.

Metlink monitoring impact of omicron on services Metlink is closely monitoring the impact of omicron on its front line staff and its knock-on effects on service delivery in the face of rapidly rising rates of community transmission.

“As of today, we are now seeing slightly more than 100 front-line staff affected by omicron-related matters, and we expect many more as the pandemic reaches its peak for us in the Greater Wellington

region,” says Metlink General Manager Scott Gallacher.

“We are absolutely focused on continuing to provide an essential service to our communities, but the reality is that our resources are likely to be stretched to the limit as frontline and support staff become unable to report for work.

will be difficult, but we will reconfigure the network as needed, particularly on our key routes. We may have to use a combination of cancellations and timetable changes, but we’ll keep as many people travelling on the network as possible.

information to passengers should our current level of operations change.”

Metlink also urges travellers to “know before they go” and check the Metlink app or website in advance.

More than 1500 responses from women who participated in Te Ara Ahunga Ora Retirement Commission’s New Zealand Financial Capability Survey have been further analysed to better understand the drivers for why many women are ending up worse off than their male counterparts.

Croquet tournament first in years

After getting the grounds up to scratch the Wainuiomata Croquet Club has held its first tournament in years attracting players from around the region.

Tournament manager Bruce Manuge says 26 players from as far away as Blenheim and Paraparaumu took part in the Golf Croquet tournament.

“There are two forms of croquet, association croquet which is the traditional form and golf croquet which is a much shorter game. It is 45 minutes against three hours and all the people are on the lawn at the same time and it is more social and probably more popular than association croquet,” Bruce says.

In golf croquet, a hoop is won by the first ball to go through each hoop. Unlike association croquet,

there are no additional turns for hitting other balls. Each player takes a stroke in turn, each trying to hit a ball through the same hoop.

The sequence of play is blue, red, black, yellow.

The tournament was sponsored

by Ray and Linda Wallace.

The club now in its 29th year is also on the lookout for new members. Bruce says it is a game that is competitive whatever age you are.

“Nationally the sport is growing and we are starting to attract young people and are looking to touch base with schools again to show young kids what it’s about,” he says.

“Some of the current New Zealand champions are school kids.”

The club plays on Saturday’s and Wednesday’s Bruce says but they are flexible if new members want to take part on other days.

Walking with dinosaurs

Bringing prehistoric times alive again in Queen Street Wainuiomata provided the chance for kids to walk among life size dinosaurs.

Modelled on dinosaurs that have been excavated in North

America and China the display also features a fossil pit, an exact replica of a pit in Northern China.

One copy was allowed to be taken from the area and shared around the world.

The show is open this weekend Saturday and Sunday.

GARDENING THIS WEEK Grow your own seeds : By Wally Richards Raising plants from seeds is a great sense of achievement for most gardeners and when the seeds are the ones you collected for free it is even better.

All plants that you have growing in your gardens seed at sometime, with some plants that maybe years away but with annual plants it is at maturity each year.

Annual plants that are left to seed and die back will have produced fertile seeds if pollination has occurred successfully.

If these seeds are left to fall naturally to the soil then at some ideal time for them, they will germinate and produce seedlings.

Two things prevent this happening WKH ¿ UVW EHLQJ \RX UHPRYLQJ WKH G\LQJ plants before they can distribute seed or in the case of many vegetables you have harvested before the crop JRHV WR VHHG DQG UHPRYHG À RZHULQJ vegetables before they set seed.

When you have left something to À RZHU DQG GURS IHUWLOH VHHGV WKHQ later on if you don’t recognize those seedlings as preferred plants, you may kill them thinking they are weeds.

It is a learning curve to know what is a wanted plant and a unwanted plant but with a little close observation you can score a lot of free plants by allowing mature plants to seed.

When plants produce seed pods that are drying out, then more than likely there are fertilised seeds in the pods which you can harvest for sowing sometime.

This apply to a wide range of plants from roses with rose hips, natives, RUQDPHQWDOV À RZHUV YHJHWDEOHV DQG fruit.

How many of us have eaten a ripe SOXP R൵ WKHLU WUHH DQG VSDW RXW WKH stone?

Months or maybe even years later up pops a plum seedling which will eventually grow into another plum WUHH VLPLODU RU HYHQ GL൵ HUHQW IURP your named plum tree.

There are a number of fruits that we buy that have seeds, which we can collect at no extra cost.

This includes tomatoes, capsicums, beans, peas, pumpkin, passion fruit, PHORQV DSSOHV FLWUXV VWRQH IUXLW ¿ JV even strawberries.

I have at sometime grown all in the list from purchase fruit.

If you come across a special fruit RU RQH WKDW LV PRUH GL൶ FXOW WR JHW WKH seed of from seed packets then you should certainly save the seed and plant them some time.

Whether it is successful or not it

really does not matter as its free and a bit of a challenge.

Recently we found two Asian foods one type of snake bean and two types of bitter melon.

I collected a few seeds from them and with the snake bean just sat the whole bean on a late afternoon windowsill to dry out and mature the seeds inside.

They are now all growing happily in one of my glasshouses and later ZH VKDOO ¿ QG RXW LI WKH\ KDYH FRPH true to form.

Collecting some seed from fruit you have grown or purchased is just the matter of removing them from the fruit, laying on a bit of paper towel to allow to dry.

Once they are dry you can either plant them or store them.

The best way to store is to write on the paper towel what they are then place inside a sealed glass jar and then into the fridge where they can wait till you are ready to plant.

Several types of seeds can be stored in the same jar. The fridge storage means they will keep very well for a long period of time.

I have tomato seed over 30 years old that will still give me about 20 to 50 per cent strike rate.

The fridge also gives the seeds a false winter so when they come out they will think its spring and germinate better as a result.

Spring is normally the best time to bring out seeds you wish to sprout as the day light hours are extending and many seeds relate to that.

Self sown seeds lay dormant until the conditions are ideal for them to sprout, that means light hours, temperature and moisture levels.

When they germinate they send down (in most cases) a long tap root just as the trunk sprouts upwards.

This long tap root has secondary URRWV IRUPHG R൵ LW PDNLQJ WKH SODQW

sturdy and deep rooting.

This enables the plant to gather food and moisture better than transplants.

So where possible sow your seeds where the plant is going to grow to maturity.

Seeds germinated in cell packs dont have the advantage of deep rooting but they do have the advantage of less root disturbance when transplanting.

3XQQHW JURZQ VHHGOLQJV ZLOO VX൵ HU the most root damage when you separate the seedlings, but another aspect comes into play, the damaged roots will be quicker to produce side roots and also generate a bigger root system.

Normally this time of the year germinating seeds is not a problem as the soil temperatures are supposed to be over 10 degrees.

In a glasshouse where the air temperature is warm seeds in containers will germinate better as long as adequate moisture is applied to the medium.

Before you cover your seeds spray them with a solution of Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) at 20ml per litre of water. This natural product stimulates the germination to kick in.

When germinating in trays or cell packs use a good compost such as Daltons or Oderings as the base then with a sieve you sieve some of the same mix to make a nice layer of friable smaller particles.

It’s onto this your spread your seeds, spray with MBL and cover by sieving more compost.

In the garden sieve the soil for a seed raising bed. Forget the seed raising mixes they are a waste of time as well as being too expensive when compared to the herbicide free two brands I have mentioned.

Keeping seeds of your favourite vegetables is very important because seed strains disappear overnight as seed companies replace varieties.

Who’s responsible when pets misbehave?

Imagine you’ve taken your dog out for fun at the dog park, and while off-lead he gets a little over-excited, races away and nips another dog.

Unfortunately, the bitten dog develops an infection and becomes seriously unwell, resulting in thousands of dollars in vet bills.

New Zealand Blood Service (NZBS) has reduced the deferral period for blood and plasma donors who have had COVID-19, are considered a close contact of a confirmed or suspected case or travelled overseas from a COVID-19 risk area.

If someone is a confirmed or suspected COVID-19 case, they will be deferred from donating for 14 days from the date of recovery (or from the date of a positive test result if

they have no symptoms).

Did we forget to tell them?

Which brings me to these conclusions: That if children are overprotected, From the dangers in the real world, They will come to expect that same protection, As adults.

SPORTS TALK With Jacob Page

Say it isn’t so, Warnie I started last week by convincing Mum to buy me a signed cricket ball of Richard Hadlee and Shane Warne.

I figured, Sir Richard was getting on in years and while my birthday wasn’t until June, I’m notoriously difficult to buy for apparently so this would give Mum a year of relative comfort on the present-front.

Never did I think we would lose Warne to a suspected heart attack on Saturday at just the age of 52.

My partner and I are both cricket

tragics and we just laid in bed stunned after waking up to the news.

Both of us are in our early 30s so Warne’s career played out throughout our childhood and we both felt like we lost part of it over the weekend.

Warne was a charismatic enigma both on and off the field, he was appointment viewing when he was chucked the ball.

He revived the art of leg spin, him and him alone and while he

is considered by more respected lovers of the game as a top five player of all time, he achieved great heights while maintaining a level of humility and relatability to the average punter.

Warne played in a Christchurch Earthquake fundraiser at the Basin Reserve in 2011 when he didn’t have to do it.

He also did plenty to help tsunami victims in Sri Lanka in 2005.

He loved a pie and a dart, was never

in Greek God shape physically and always spoke his mind.

He was a relatable radical who shook the game to its core and changed cricket forever.

Perhaps his biggest achievement was his ability to be a likeable Aussie cricketer on this side of the Tasman.

His death is a shockingly sad end to a life which should have had many years left.

Only Warne could bowl a delivery

dubbed “the ball of the century” and have that title hold up.

The Gatting ball in 1993 would have been enough for us mere mortals to dine out on for years had we bowled it, but not Warne, for him, it was only the beginning.

Current Aussie captain Pat Cummins described Warne as “a once in a century player” - I don’t think a century is enough time between drinks for one as marvellous as Shane Keith Warne.

The ANZ Next XI academy will show New Zealand’s young female cricketing talent a pathway into elite level cricket and future world cups, as the WHITE FERNS get ready to take on the world at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022 (4 Mar - 3 Apr).

Hannah will get to meet her heroes, while attending an exclusive WHITE FERNS junior training academy later this year, where they will meet the players, train with the team, attend expert-led master classes, and learn valuable skills to inspire them to become the very best cricketer they can be.

Hannah was buzzing to be named one of the ANZ Next XI saying, “I was pretty excited, but I dialled it down a little bit because I was in class when I found out. Knowing there were hundreds that applied, I was quite chuffed.”

Hannah, who plays for the PetoneRiverside Premier Women’s team and the Wellington A representative team was presented with an

ANZ Next XI training kit including a uniform, bat, helmet and pads to ensure that she has everything she needs to be WHITE FERNS ready.

Hannah’s entry to cricket began with her dad signing her up to his old club at age five. She played with boys’ teams until she joined the adult grade Petone Women’s team at 13. She said, “It was different.

The boys were a lot more competitive than we were at that age!”

“For a while I didn’t really care about cricket until I realised that if I tried my hardest, I really enjoyed it.

I used to bowl big loopy grenades.

As I tried harder, I found out I’m actually quite good and I wanted to improve on that and get better and better.”

Hannah felt confident in her transition from playing junior cricket with the boys to going up against adult women in the premier team saying, “the boys bowled a bit faster than the girls so I felt confident going to the premier girls team. I know I’ve faced better so I can go and smash this.”

Hannah’s Premier Women’s team is made up of girls from all around the North Wellington region and after playing together for the past few years they’re all good friends.

She said, “For our first two seasons

we were the youngest team by far and we didn’t win any games.

“This season, we won our second game and ended up making it to the 40 over finals. We didn’t win but it was amazing to make the finals. We’re a force to be reckoned with now.”

Hannah’s proudest moment was opening batting and scoring her first century to win the game that would qualify her team for the 40 over final. “We needed to win to get into the final. My friend and I put on a 149 run partnership, I was 101 not out. We’re a bit of a duo together.”

Hannah was selected to play for the Wellington A team based on her top scores and has played competitions at the Basin alongside Wellington Blaze players. She has her sights set on a spot with the Blaze and the WHITE FERNS after that.

“I’m trying to prove myself, work harder, and prove I can play for the Blaze. I really like watching them play - especially in the Super Smash. We have a lot of WHITE FERNS so the standard is quite high. I’m thinking they’re not too much older than me, that could be me in a few years.”

Watson says it’s important to support women in pursuit of their goals.

She said ANZ has been a strong supporter of women in sport for over

10 years from grassroots to elite level athletes.

“That’s why we’re proud to be putting our full support behind the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup. It’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase our athletes to the world and provide important opportunities to grow the next generation of cricketers.”

Ulalei commends total touch attitude Ulalei’s Mens touch team ended its season last Friday at Hutt Park in a truncated competition, a format likely to be a blueprint for competitions in the near future as COVID-19 remains in the community. Competition organisers, Total Touch showed some out of the box thinking in ensuring its many competitions across Wellington were able to proceed safely this summer.

Says Total Touch’s head operating officer Bronwyn Jahnke, “With most sports competitions and events being cancelled left

right and centre, we wanted to do all we could so our competitions could go ahead safely. We are very proud that our competitions have continued to run under AL2, orange and red light restrictions.

For the children’s grades in particular, it is especially rewarding to be able to make it happen and bring back some sense of normality and positive experiences for them.”

The revised formats saw the draw for the massive junior competition (over 80 teams) being split into two with teams

playing double headers every fortnight. The much smaller seniors competition had the teams play three consecutive weeks of double headers. The competitions required the co-operation from whanau and supporters in order to reduce numbers at the grounds and making sure no spectators attended. Squad numbers were also restricted and My Vaccine Passports mandatory.

Ulalei manager Karina Sagaga commended Total Touch’s efforts, “To be able to play this season in a safe environment in this

uncertain climate is testament to the organisers’ positive attitude.

They have left no stone unturned in protecting the players and officials. And this is the way sports competitions will be run in the near future which we all need to get used to. Total Touch is ahead of the game in that regard.”
