Welcome
to DanceXchange’s Autumn 2013 brochure, and another busy season of dance! //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
We’re excited to be working alongside some of the city’s best arts venues and companies to celebrate the opening of the new Library of Birmingham in September – and we’re proud to be the Official Partner of the 2013 Sony Xperia B-Boy Championships World Finals, one of the most eagerly anticipated competitions in the international hip-hop calendar, which will be held here for the first time in its eighteen-year history. For those of you who want to dance and stay fit, we will be running our usual extensive programme of dance classes – look out for our new lunchtime sessions and extra classes in popular styles. And of course there’s our Autumn performance season in our theatre The Patrick Centre, featuring some of the world’s most engaging dance companies and presenting performances as part of Fierce Festival for the first time. Read Paul Burns’ introduction on page 6 for more details. We’re also busy working towards International Dance Festival Birmingham (IDFB) 2014 with our producing partner Birmingham Hippodrome. There will be some unique ways to get involved in this 2014 edition of the festival and, as ever,
dance will be springing up in all sorts of unusual places and spaces. During 4 Squares Weekender in September you can catch a preview of one of the IDFB projects ‘Birmingham Dancing’ where we’ll be choreographing ordinary Brummies in their workplaces. If you’d like to get involved in this project with your business please get in touch. And finally don’t forget to visit westmidlandsdance.com which we launched earlier this year – the go-to site for all things dance. We’d love you to join in – create your own profile, upload events and share your dancing experiences. So there’s lot of dance to get involved with this Autumn and beyond – we look forward to seeing you at dx soon!

Performance // Autumn 2013 Welcome to another Autumn season at DanceXchange. Whatever the weather, there’s plenty to keep you in a sunny disposition in this season. Before I get into the season proper, we’ve got a very busy September to tell you about.
unexpected moments which stick in the mind for years afterwards.
The first weekend of the month sees the opening of the new Library of Birmingham and, as part of the celebrations, DanceXchange is supporting two projects – BE Festival’s BE Next project, featuring 100 young people from across the city – and Shangaan Electro, an amazing dance sensation from South Africa.
This same weekend we present two very different works in partnership with Fierce, Birmingham’s festival of performance and live art. Atlanta Eke’s Monster Body (presented at Birmingham Ormiston Academy) is a challenging exploration and demystification of the body. An extraordinary performer, Eke plays with ideas of objectification, disgust and the dramatic.
That weekend is also the 4 Squares Weekender – a free celebration weekend of outdoor arts. DanceXchange’s contribution to this celebration includes Birmingham Dancing – a unique new participatory dance concept which choreographs individuals in their workplaces. Also in September one of the world’s biggest dance events arrives in Birmingham for the first time. After 17 years in London, the Sony Xperia B-Boy Championships World Finals come to Birmingham’s O2 Academy, in partnership with DanceXchange. We think that the event will further cement Birmingham’s growing reputation as a world centre for all dance forms. October sees the start of the DanceXchange season, and a busy first weekend. First up we have Swedish choreographer Gunilla Heilborn, with the UK premiere of her work This is not a love story. Like a dance version of an art-house road movie, this unique work is a delicate search for connections between two people. Subtle, funny and utterly charming this is a show full of

Iona Kewney has become known across the European performance scene for her unique approach to movement, combining contortion, exertion and endurance to dramatic effect. At times disconcerting and unsettling, yet always compelling, Iona and her collaborator, musician Joseph Quimby, create a performance space like no other. Next up we have one of the biggest names in the UK dance scene – Russell Maliphant. Most recently seen in Birmingham performing with Sylvie Guillem at International Dance Festival Birmingham 2012, Russell has created and toured work across the globe for many years. For Still Current he brings together a group of extraordinary dancers to perform some of his most seminal duets and solos, along with a number of new works. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see the work of one of the UK’s dance luminaries at close quarters.

Company Chameleon are becoming well known to DanceXchange audiences and this season sees them performing their most recent work Pictures We Make. A powerful and poetic pair of pieces, this is a beautifully crafted work full of exquisite movement. This is closely followed by more stunning dancing in Laïla Diallo’s Hold Everything Dear, a beautiful show expressing the search for a moment of certainty, permanence or place. Filled with potent images, the show includes an exceptional cast of dancers, including Diallo herself, who brings her work to DanceXchange for the first time. Our final show in this tightly packed season is the new work from acclaimed dance theatre company Probe. Led by the wonderful Antonia Grove, and with the support of a great group of collaborators, Running on Empty promises to be a great end to the season. And that’s the lot. Have a lovely autumn, wrap up warm, put some food out for the birds and hopefully see you at DanceXchange very soon.

Gunilla Heilborn //
This is not a love story
UK Premiere
Thursday 3 – Friday 4 October // 8pm /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Vera: If two persons walk next to each other long enough, they will eventually merge together in one single point. Kowalski: That’s where you disappear, in the horizon… Vera: All stories must end in some way. This is not a love story is a story of two reluctant heroes, Kowalski and Vera. Or maybe their names are really Emma and Folke? With a disarming simplicity they switch between dance and scattered questioning: Who did what? When? Where? And why? In a delicate search for context and continuity our heroes end up on a journey that is definitely not about the destination, but the reflection along the way. A true road movie dance. Gunilla Heilborn’s works are characterized by cinematic timing and humour. She works from and with the motto that all material is valid, it’s just how you organise it that matters. With an existential flair, Heilborn has brought both laughter and reflection to audiences with such works as The Five Year Plan, Potato Country and This is Alaska. Age guidance: 12yrs+

Iona Kewney & Joseph Quimby //
Knights of the Invisible Saturday 5 October // 4pm ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Iona Kewney is a Scottish dance-theatre artist whose frenetic, viceral movement evokes images of hysteria, fits and contortionism. This extreme physicality jousts with a live sound score heavy with distortion and electronic noise, created by Joseph Quimby. Iona Kewney memorably performed Self-Interrupted Exhibition at Ikon Eastside, Birmingham in British Dance Edition 2010. She studied dance in the Netherlands and later Cirkuspiloterna Circus school in Sweden. Throughout 15 years of performing her own work internationally, she has also toured the world for years with major Belgian directors Alain Platel (Les Ballets C de La B) and Wim Vandekeybus (Ultima Vez). Joseph Quimby’s bands have included; ‘Take a Worm for a Walk Week’, ‘Remember Remember’, ‘Loss Leader’, and his own drone outfit ‘HIVVER’. Joseph has toured the UK extensively with his bands and as support for major groups such as Mogwai. Iona and Joseph have worked as a duo company since 2010. Supported by Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe/Circus Next, Les Migrateurs, National Pole Arts du Cirque. Strasbourg (FR) La Breche, National Pole Arts Cirque. Cherbourgh (FR). Circus Centrum (B). Subtopia (SE) Creative Scotland/Creative Futures (UK) British Dance Edition (UK) Crying Out Loud (UK) Les Ballets C de la B (B). Age guidance: 11yrs+

Atlanta Eke //
Monster Body Saturday 5 October // 5.30pm Please note this performance will take place at Birmingham Ormiston Academy ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
A graphically direct and intense dance-theatre piece, Monster Body is a saturation of textures, tones, noises, rhythm and shapes created through a number of imaginative situations drawing from strong and haunting connections between local and global images that shape the female identity in contemporary culture. Through this raw and exposed work, Atlanta Eke subverts the conventional images of the female body and through deeply affecting, and often darkly funny, choreography, plans to broaden this representation in society. Atlanta Eke proposes the mystery, energy and physicality of a dancing body can be a resource to ultimately expose the ‘monster’ that hides in the space between the audience and the performer. This work is presented as part of an ongoing collaboration between Fierce Festival and Next Wave Festival in Melbourne Australia. www.atlantamaryeke.wordpress.com Monster Body was originally presented at the Next Wave Festival in May 2012 in partnership with Dancehouse and has been developed and supported through Next Wave Kickstart Program, Dancehouse, Arts Victoria and the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body. Age guidance: 16yrs+ Please note: this performance contains full frontal nudity and scenes which may offend some viewers.

A new evening of work by internationally acclaimed choreographer Russell Maliphant and masterful lighting designer Michael Hulls. The evening features newly created duets, trios and solos danced by Maliphant’s remarkable company of dancers including Dickson Mbi, who recently stunned audiences with his strength and incredible popping style in The Rodin Project, the dance film Erebus and the Lucozade Revive commercial. There is a diverse physical language across the pieces, integrating qualities and vocabulary from ballet, martial arts and contemporary dance. Pictures We Make Thursday 17 – Friday 18 October // 8pm ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
This double bill by Company Chameleon features a newly commissioned work by acclaimed choreographic duo Goddard Nixon (2012 Place Prize nominees). Eden is a powerful and poetic exploration of an internal world, featuring an original score by John Matthias. For the second part of this double bill, company founders Anthony Missen and Kevin Edward Turner present a new creation, Pictures We Make. Sourced from stories and experiences from the long shared history of the performers, the piece questions our relationships with ourselves and with other people. As we plunge from I to we, how do we navigate the space between our experience and expectations? In this captivating piece the company brings together four exceptional performers with an original score by Spanish musician and composer Miguel Marin. A Lowry commission supported by Z-arts. Welcome back to a new term of classes! ///////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Summer holidays, ice creams and sun block all seem a distant memory to us at DanceXchange; we’ve been busy confirming our autumn season, delivering workshops and building a brand new registration system for our classes, which we’ll be using when we return. With this in mind we’d like to remind all of our participants to try to arrive early wherever possible, and bear with us while we test our new system. Your patience is very much appreciated. Our classes are growing in popularity every term, so we’ve made some changes to the timetable to include more of your favourites and we’ve even managed to add a few new things to our timetable, like lunchtime Yoga and Pilates classes (a perfect way to de-stress in the middle of your work day) and a daytime Parents & Tots class.
If you’re a regular at dx, please take a few minutes to read through the at-a-glance pages and information in the brochure before you come back to class to make sure your favourite classes haven’t changed. If you’ve never been to class with us before, I’m sure you’ll be able to find something to whet your appetite; our classes are a fun way to get fit and make friends, and with no joining fee or monthly contract, they’re a great alternative to the gym. As always, if you have any questions about any of our classes, or haven’t danced before and want some advice, we’re on hand 6 days a week to help; just give us a call or pop in to see us. We look forward to seeing you in class soon!

A-Z of dance

If something’s caught your eye in our timetable, but you’re unsure what that particular class is about or what level might suit you best, here’s a handy A-Z explanation of all our classes: /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Argentine Tango Adult Beginners Far away from ballroom tango and its preset sequence, Argentine tango is a purely improvised dance, based on a connection between a couple and the music. Our tutors will guide you through a warm up and basics of this dance style. There’s no need to bring a partner for this class. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Ballet Kids/Teens/Adults Levels Our adult ballet classes are mostly taught by current or former members of Birmingham Royal Ballet; visit our website for a full schedule of tutors. Beginners: An introduction to the basics of classical ballet, the concepts of core stability, turn-out, flexibility, posture and placement. Improvers: Introducing more complex techniques, to further develop strength and stamina. Advanced: Ideal for dance students and professional dancers looking to maintain a high standard of technique, these classes provide challenging barre and centre work. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Capoeira Kids and Adult Open Level An Afro-Brazilian art form combining elements of dance with martial art, music, acrobatics and trickery. Learn the basic principles of Capoeira before forming a roda (or circle) to take turns in singing, playing instruments and playing the Capoeira ‘game’ in pairs in the centre. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Contemporary Teens and Adults Levels Beginners: Learn the basics of contemporary dance, exploring the principles of coordination, strength, body alignment and flexibility. Improvers: Develop your technique with more challenging movements and techniques, including floor work and more difficult travelling and jumping sequences. Advanced: Aimed at 2nd/3rd year dance vocational students and professional dancers, this is a fast paced and challenging class for participants with strong technique and experience in the style. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Creative Dance Kids (pictured left) In this class children will develop their balance and body coordination through games and play. They’ll also be able to make new friends and learn important social skills. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Modern Jazz Dance Kids/Teens/Adults Levels Beginners: An introduction to the principles of jazz, and an aerobic and fun workout. Improvers: Longer sequences that will challenge your stamina and strength, and help expand your movement vocabulary. Advanced: Ideal for dance students and professional dancers looking to maintain a high standard of technique, this class demands a high level of fitness and stamina. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Musical Dance Adult Open Level Each week the tutor will guide you through a warm up to prepare your body to learn a sequence from a popular musical. A fun and energetic class, this will help to build your strength and stamina, as well as allowing you to have fun! You won’t be expected to sing in this class (although we wouldn’t mind if you wanted to!). /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

General information /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
15 minute rule To prevent injury, participants more than 15 minutes late are not allowed into class, as the warm up section will have been missed.
What to wear Anything comfortable that allows you to move freely. Tracksuit bottoms or leggings and a t-shirt are suitable for most classes. Please remove all jewellery before taking part to avoid injuries. Please note that for all classes we do not allow black-soled trainers or outdoor shoes in our studios because they can damage our floors.
Access We strive to make our classes as accessible as possible to participants with disabilities. Please call us to discuss any support you might need.
New to classes? If you’re not sure what to expect and are worried about your first visit, we can pair you up with a regular class-going ‘buddy’. Just call us to arrange.
Choosing the right skill level To ensure we’re providing everyone involved with a quality experience, and to minimise the risk of injury, we ask that you only attend classes advertised for your age and taught at a level equivalent to your own experience.
The following guide can be used to help you decide the level that’s right for you. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Beginners: Fun classes learning the basics, no previous experience required. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Improvers: A faster pace class aimed at those with a basic understanding of the dance style and knowledge of technique wanting to develop their skill. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Advanced: Technically demanding classes suited to those with a high level of fitness and stamina that have significant dance experience or training. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Open Level: Classes without a specific level, such as Pilates or Musical Dance are open to all levels of experience. //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
If you’re still unsure which level is right for you, you’ll be able to attend two classes at first to make your decision.
