In a World Animal Protection first, the Canadian and US offices are joining forces to expand our capacity to help animals. We’re launching the Power of Animals campaign in both countries with a mutual goal to increase our impact for animals by 2030.

Continuing our fight to f ree Baloo

Baloo has been locked in a cage at a Romanian ski resort for 23 years, endlessly being tormented by tourists. We delivered over 178,000 signatures to the Romanian government petitioning for his release to a sanctuary. We are now building a solid legal case to rescue Baloo and move him to sanctuary. Together with your support, we will continue our fight to free Baloo.

Mapping wildlife incidents

We developed a one-of-a-kind map so you can explore Canada’s challenges with the trade and captivity of wildlife and the patchwork of regulations that makes this possible. Learn about incidents involving wild animals, government response and advocacy initiatives. Momentum is building

Municipalities across the province are adopting our roadside-zoo resolution including St. Catharines, Niagara Falls, Ajax, and more. With each municipality that joins us, the pressure on the Government of Ontario mounts, which will make it extremely difficult for them to continue to ignore the plight of thousands of captive wild animals.

La suite de notre combat pour libérer Baloo

Baloo a passé les 23 dernières années enfermé dans une cage dans une station de ski en Roumanie, sans cesse tourmenté par les touristes. Nous avons remis au gouvernement roumain une pétition de plus de 178 000 signatures demandant à ce qu’il soit libéré et placé dans un sanctuaire. Nous constituons maintenant un dossier juridique solide pour sauver Baloo et l’installer dans un refuge. Grâce à votre soutien, nous poursuivons notre combat pour sa libération.

To protect animals from the dangerous wildlife trade and people from future zoonotic disease outbreaks, we testified at the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health about Bill C-293, urging MPs to pass this critical legislation.

As factory farms and monocropping expand across Brazil, we are there to protect vulnerable species like maned wolves with radio collars, drones and cameras to alert rescuers. Our data will also help push the government to act.

After our tireless work and your support, South Africa’s Minister of the Environment approved a mandatory phase-out of captive lion breeding. We also exposed an international criminal trade network of lion bones, so this win protects lions and the safety of communities. Communautés plus sûres Donnant suite à notre travail acharné et à votre soutien, le ministère de l’Environnement de l’Afrique du Sud a approuvé l’élimination progressive obligatoire de l’élevage de lions en captivité. Nous avons aussi braqué les projecteurs sur un réseau criminel international de trafic d’os de lions, une victoire qui protège les lions et renforce la sûreté des communautés.

Showing the future of farming

We have partnered with Open Philanthropy to provide support to improve farm animal welfare, like at Kid Dee Organic Farm. The project will be a model for others and show that healthy animals lead to healthy people and environments.

Incredible bear rescue in Vietnam L’incroyable mission de secours d’un ours au Vietnam

After living alone on a bear bile farm in Vietnam for more than 20 years, Chinh, an Asiatic black bear, has been rescued and released.

Chinh was rescued by FOUR PAWS, supported by World Animal Protection and the Vietnam Forest Protection Department (FPD). His new home is at a FOUR PAWS Sanctuary in Ninh Binh, where he delighted in experiencing grass for the first time in his life. He is now free from exploitation and can live peacefully among other rescued bears.

Thanks to such collaborative efforts, there are now more bears in sanctuaries run by non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and government rescue centres than on farms in Vietnam.

Après avoir vécu seul dans un élevage d’ours pour la bile du Vietnam durant plus de 20 ans, Chinh, un ours noir d’Asie, a été secouru et libéré.

Chinh a été secouru par FOUR PAWS avec l’aide de Protection mondiale des animaux et du ministère vietnamien responsable de la protection des forêts (FPD). Son nouveau foyer se trouve au refuge de FOUR PAWS à Ninh Binh, où il est ravi de découvrir la sensation de l’herbe pour la première fois de sa vie. Il est maintenant libéré de l’exploitation et peut vivre une vie paisible aux côtés d’autres ours secourus.

Grâce à des efforts collaboratifs comme celui-ci, il y a maintenant plus d’ours dans les sanctuaires dirigés par des organismes à but non lucratif (ONG) et les centres de secours gouvernementaux que dans les élevages du Vietnam.

Depuis presque 20 ans, nous travaillons avec d’autres ONG pour mettre fin à la pratique cruelle de l’élevage d’ours pour la bile et pour protéger la petite population d’ours sauvages. Nos efforts collectifs ont permis de réduire de 95 % le nombre d’ours exploités pour leur bile au Vietnam.

L’année dernière, la générosité de nos donateurs et donatrices a soutenu nos efforts constants pour mettre fin au commerce des ours pour la bile. Grâce à ce soutien inébranlable, nous continuerons d’aider des ours comme Chinh et de veiller à ce que chaque ours dans le besoin ait une seconde chance et une vie meilleure.

Chinh was the 15th and final bear on the farm.

Did you know?

Empathy (the ability to understand and share the feelings of another), is known to be expressed by some animals we share this planet with.

While the study of sentience in wild animals is still a growing field, there are behaviours animals exhibit that give scientists clues on their capacity to feel emotions. This capacity, known as sentience, is why their welfare matters so much.

Quelques-uns des animaux avec qui nous partageons cette planète sont reconnus pour exprimer de l’empathie (la capacité de comprendre et de partager les émotions des autres).

Bien que l’étude de la sensibilité chez les animaux sauvages soit encore un domaine en pleine croissance, certains comportements des animaux donnent aux scientifiques des indices sur leur capacité à ressentir des émotions. Cette capacité, connue sous le nom de sensibilité, est la raison pour laquelle leur bien-être est si important.

Sun bears can precisely mimic the facial expressions of other bears when playing together. This skill, known as facial mimicry, is linked to empathy, and this level of precision has only been seen in humans and gorillas until now.

Elephants find yawning contagious, and most will yawn in response to seeing another elephant yawn, and even when they see a familiar human yawn.1

A lion’s yawn is also contagious. If a lion sees another lion yawning, they are likely to yawn too.2

This is known as the yawn contagion. Contagious yawning has only been observed in a handful of species and is associated with empathy.3

Les ours malais peuvent imiter les expressions faciales des autres individus avec précision lorsqu’ils jouent ensemble. Cette habileté appelée mimétisme facial est liée à l’empathie, et ce niveau de précision n’avait été observé que chez les humains et les gorilles jusqu’à maintenant.

Le bâillement est contagieux chez les éléphants et la plupart d’entre eux bâillent non seulement en voyant un autre éléphant le faire, mais aussi en voyant un humain familier bâiller.

Le bâillement d’un lion est aussi contagieux. Si un lion en voit un autre bâiller, il bâillera probablement à son tour.

Ce phénomène s’appelle la contagion du bâillement. Associée à l’empathie, la contagion du bâillement n’a été observée que chez un petit nombre d’espèces.
