Earlier this year we celebrated members of the Canada office as they marked 10+ years with the organization. I believe that to be a huge testament to the work we’ve done together and a true belief and pride in our vision to create a world where animals live free from suffering.
As an important member of the World Animal Protection community, I hope that you share in a feeling of pride in the work you help us make a success.
Plus tôt cette année, nous avons célébré des membres du bureau canadien qui font partie de l’organisme depuis plus de 10 ans. That’s why I love From the Field. It gives us the opportunity to share with you the many ways in which you change the lives of animals. In this issue, we remember Kiska the world’s loneliest Orca, and touch on how together we are changing the lives of wild animals used for entertainment. There’s an update from Brazil – spotlighting animals released back into the wild following their rescue and rehabilitation. And so much more for you to read and enjoy.

Voici pourquoi j’aime le bulletin Nouvelles sur le terrain. Il permet de partager avec vous nos nombreuses façons de changer ensemble la vie des animaux. Dans cette édition, nous honorons la mémoire de Kiska, l’orque la plus esseulée du monde, et nous abordons notre façon de changer ensemble la vie des animaux exploités pour le divertissement. Nous avons une mise à jour du Brésil mettant en vedette des animaux remis en liberté dans la nature après leur sauvetage et leur réadaptation. Et bien plus encore à lire et à découvrir..

Canada’s last captive orca, Kiska, passed away on March 9th at Marineland. Her story is a tragic example of systemic issues within the entertainment industry.
Together we can continue to push for change to prevent many more animals from suffering the way Kiska did and put an end to this industry.
• By passing stronger federal laws like Bill S-241 to phase out the use of wild animal entertainment in Canada.
• By urging Ontario, to end wildlife entertainment and roadside zoos through a mandatory province-wide zoo licensing system.
• By supporting and developing responsible tourism alternatives like the first Wildlife Heritage area.
• By ending consumer demand for wildlife entertainment. We do this through tourist education strategies and pressuring travel companies to stop selling tickets to places that exploit wild animals.
We hope that Kiska’s legacy will inspire others to work towards a world where all animals can live free and wild lives.

Kiska, la dernière orque vivant en captivité au Canada, est morte le 9 mars à Marineland. Son histoire est un exemple tragique des problèmes systémiques dans l’industrie du divertissement.
Ensemble, nous pouvons continuer à exiger des changements pour éviter à beaucoup d’autres animaux de souffrir comme Kiska et pour mettre fin à cette industrie.
• En adoptant des lois fédérales plus strictes comme le projet de loi S-241 visant à mettre progressivement fin à l’utilisation d’animaux sauvages à des fins de divertissement au Canada.
• En exhortant l’Ontario, à mettre un terme au divertissement utilisant des espèces sauvages et aux zoos amateurs au moyen d’un système provincial de délivrance de permis pour les zoos.
• En soutenant et en mettant en place des solutions de rechange axées sur le tourisme responsable comme le premier site du patrimoine faunique.
• En mettant un terme à la demande en matière de divertissement exploitant des espèces sauvages. Nous le faisons avec des stratégies d’éducation des touristes et en faisant pression sur les entreprises de voyage afin qu’elles cessent de vendre des billets pour des lieux qui exploitent les animaux sauvages.
Nous espérons que l’héritage de Kiska inspirera d’autres gens à œuvrer pour un monde où tous les animaux peuvent vivre en liberté et en nature.

Our new report sheds light on the often-overlooked animal welfare issues faced by cull dairy cows in Canada, from painful health conditions to longdistance transport and neglect. It offers key recommendations to improve their welfare and calls for a multi-stakeholder approach to address the systemic failures that perpetuate animal suffering.
We’re thrilled to see the House of Commons pass the Pandemic Prevention and Preparedness Act (Bill C-293) to committee. Bill C-293 was narrowly passed by Members of Parliament (MPs), showing our efforts are still critical in Canada to push for legislation that can help end the commercial wildlife trade and wildlife markets. We want to thank everyone who took action to help get this bill passed to Committee.
We were pleased to have representatives invited to join Canada’s delegation. We met with several country delegations urging them to support stronger language in targets that would directly impact animals exploited in the commercial wildlife trade which is driving species extinction, biodiversity loss, animal cruelty, and pandemic risk.
Des problèmes de santé douloureux au transport sur de longues distances en passant par le manque de soins, notre nouveau rapport met en lumière les questions, souvent ignorées, liées au bien-être des vaches laitières de réforme au Canada. Il propose des recommandations clés pour améliorer le bien-être de ces vaches et prône une approche multipartite pour remédier aux échecs systémiques qui perpétuent la souffrance animale.
Nous sommes ravi·e·s de constater que la Chambre des communes a envoyé la Loi sur la prévention et la préparation en matière de pandémie au Canada (projet de loi C-293) au comité. Le projet de loi C-293 a été adopté de justesse par les membres du Parlement; nous devons continuer nos efforts pour instaurer une loi qui vise à mettre fin au commerce d’espèces sauvages et aux marchés d’animaux vivants. Nous tenons à remercier toutes les personnes qui ont contribué à faire en sorte que ce projet de loi soit à l’examen en comité.
Nous étions ravi·e·s que des représentant·e·s de notre organisation soient invité·e·s à se joindre à la délégation canadienne. Nous avons rencontré les délégations de nombreux pays. Nous les avons encouragées à soutenir un langage plus fort dans les cibles qui auraient une incidence directe sur les animaux exploités dans le commerce des espèces sauvages, qui est à l’origine de l’extinction des espèces, de la perte de biodiversité, de la cruauté envers les animaux et du risque de pandémie.

In a timespan of three months, we have contributed to two major wins, preventing a commercial reptile zoo from opening in St. Catharines and London, Ontario, preventing further exploitation of these animals.

The winter season at AMP Libearty sanctuary is always a challenging time. Due to the extent of the snow this year, the access road has been badly damaged with mud. Together we were able to fund much needed emergency repairs.

You helped support the Sappraiwan Elephant Resort and Sanctuary in Thailand develop a sustainable food source for their elephants. They set up a solarpowered irrigation system and cultivated land to create the banana plantation.
Leading pharmaceutical company, Zhejiang Wuchan Zhongda Pharmacectical Co. LTD (ZWZP), has pledged not to produce or sell products containing wild animal ingredients. They committed to educating their staff and consumers to support alternatives.

After over a year in rehabilitation, Cecilia and Darlan, the anteaters that were rescued from the fires in Brazil, were successfully released earlier this year, back to their home in the wild. The release was performed using the soft release technique, which consists of opening the door of the immersion enclosure and waiting for the moment when the animal feels comfortable to leave.
Darlan, who was often fearful during his rehabilitation process, was the first to run off and disappear into the vegetation.
Cecilia on the other hand, who had always shown to be very curious and explorative in rehabilitation, left the enclosure for a while but then reappeared again. She did take a bit longer to leave but eventually, like Darlan, set off into the wild.
Après plus d’un an de réadaptation, Cecilia et Darlan, les fourmiliers secourus lors des incendies du Brésil, ont été remis en liberté avec succès plus tôt cette année et ils sont maintenant de retour dans leur milieu naturel. La technique utilisée est celle de la remise en liberté progressive, qui consiste à ouvrir la porte de l’enclos d’immersion et attendre que l’animal se sente à l’aise de partir.
Darlan, qui était souvent craintif lors du processus de réadaptation, a été le premier à s’échapper et à disparaître dans la végétation.
De son côté, Cecilia, qui s’est toujours montrée très curieuse et exploratrice en réadaptation, a quitté l’enclos un certain temps, mais elle est ensuite réapparue. Son départ a demandé un peu plus de temps que celui de Darlan, mais éventuellement, elle s’est échappée en nature comme lui.
Although both had stayed together in a shared enclosure, once released they did not interact with one another and ventured off on their separate ways. This is normal behaviour for giant anteaters, who are solitary animals in the wild.
Cecilia and Darlan were released in an area that is protected from fires, and each was fitted with a radio collar to monitor their location and movement. In case anything unusual is detected the team is ready to search for them and make sure they are okay.
Bien que les deux fourmiliers aient partagé un enclos commun, ils n’ont pas interagi une fois remis en liberté et ils sont partis chacun de leur côté. Ce comportement est normal pour les fourmiliers géants, qui sont des animaux solitaires en nature.
Cecilia et Darlan ont été remis en liberté dans une zone protégée des feux et chacun d’eux a reçu un collier émetteur afin de suivre leurs emplacements et leurs déplacements. L’équipe est prête à partir à leur recherche pour s’assurer qu’ils vont bien si quelque chose d’inhabituel est détecté.
